In order to fulfil the demands of contemporary challenges, UNISSA has
currently introduced a new faculty; namely, Faculty of Islamic Development
Management. This faculty has been established together with another
four existing faculties. Meanwhile, another two centres are also recently
introduced as to enrich the presence of six more centres. The two centres are
known as Halalan Thayyiban Research Centre and Centre for Leadership
and Lifelong Learning respectively. The introduction of these new faculties
and centres are essential to nurture personalities who are not only experts
in their respective fields but at the same time become active and proactive
contributors. Besides, these faculties and centres are to prepare the
university to meet the international standard and eventually becoming the
leading International Islamic University in the near future, insha Allah.

Universiti Islam Sultan Sharif Ali (UNISSA) was established by the consent and
announcement made by His Majesty Kebawah Duli Yang Maha Mulia Paduka Seri
Baginda Sultan Haji Hassanal Bolkiah Mu‘izzaddin Waddaulah ibni al-Marhum Sultan
Haji Omar ‘Ali Saifuddien Sa‘adul Khairi Waddin, Sultan and Yang Di-Pertuan of
Negara Brunei Darussalam.

UNISSA was named after the third Sultan of Brunei, Sultan Sharif Ali who reigned from
1425M - 1432M. Sultan Sharif Ali was a very pious ruler and was therefore nicknamed
“Sultan Berkat” (Blessed Sultan). Sultan Sharif Ali was the direct descendant of
the Prophet Sallallahu ‘Alaihi Wasallam through his grandson Sayyidina Hassan
Radiallahu ‘anhu. Sultan Sharif Ali was the first ruler to build a mosque and fortified the
defense of Brunei by ordering his people to build a stone fortress. He governed Brunei
according to Islamic principles and his reign was popular and highly respected.

This four (4) year programme is designed to produce competent graduates who are well

(‘AQIDAH AND DA‘WAH)

This four (4) year programme is designed to produce competent graduates who are well
versed in the discipline of ‘Aqidah and Da‘wah. This programme includes the following
courses:

i. Studies in World Religions (Dirasat fi al-Adyan),
ii. Sufism (al-Tasawwuf),
iii. The Islamic World Today (Hadir al-‘Alam al-Islami),
iv. Islamic Philosophy (al-Falsafah al-Islamiyyah),
v. Contemporary Ideological Trends (Tayarat Fikriyyah Mu‘asirah) and
vi. Islamic Media (al-I‘lam al-Islami).

2018 / 2019 This four (4) year programme is designed to produce competent graduates who are well
versed in the discipline of Tafsir and Hadith. This programme includes the following
courses:

i. Al-Qira’at,
ii. Tarikh al-Mushaf,
iii. ‘Ilm al-Rasm al-Uthmani,
iv. ‘Ilm al-Fawasil,
v. Dabt al-Mushaf and
vi. Tawjih al-Qira’at.

Notes:
Students from each programmes are required to participate in Industrial Training course
arranged by the Faculty in their third year of study. The training usually commences after
Second Semester Final Examination period.

Third year students are also required to conduct a research project (Bahth al-Takharruj) in
their selected area of study and submit a written report, in Arabic, in the second semester.

MASTER OF USULUDDIN
(COURSEWORK AND DISSERTATION)

This two (2) year programme aims to enhance and strengthen students’ knowledge in
Islamic studies particularly in the major area of Usuluddin, namely The Holy Qur’an, the
sunnah, Islamic da‘wah and comparative religions.

A total of six (6) courses are offered which include three (3) mandatory courses:

i. Studies in Books of Religion (Dirasaat fi Kutub al-Adyan),
ii. Miraculous Knowledge in the Qur’an (al-I‘jaz al-‘Ilmy fi al-Qur’an al-Karim) and
Iii. Studies in the Hadith Books (Dirasaat fi Kutub al-Sunnah).

These courses are offered in the first year of study and students are required to pass the
mandatory courses before they are allowed to continue with their studies in the second
year.

Upon completion of the coursework, they are required to write a dissertation, in Arabic,
on an approved topic under the supervision of an academic staff member appointed by
the Faculty. The master degree will only be conferred after the student has successfully
fulfilled all the requirements as prescribed in the Postgraduate Regulations of UNISSA.

MASTER OF USULUDDIN (RESEARCH) 2018 / 2019

The Faculty also offers a master degree programme by research. This programme is only 21
offered to applicants who are exceptionally qualified to undertake research in Arabic,
English and Malay languages. Applicants are required to submit their research proposal prospectus
to be assessed by the Postgraduate Studies Committee.

In line with the University’s aim to produce qualified and competitive Muslim scholars,
the Faculty welcomes qualified applicants to apply to this programme in any selected area
of studies. Applicants are expected to have a good background in research methodology
and also fluent in the language selected for their research. As part of the evaluation
process, candidates may be required to sit and pass a special examination as prescribed by
Postgraduate Regulations as well as to engage with particular units of study or prescribed
readings at the Faculty’s discretion.

DOCTOR OF PHILOSOPHY IN USULUDDIN
(RESEARCH)

The Faculty offers a doctoral programme in the area of Usuluddin. This programme aims
to encourage qualified candidates in the field of Usuluddin to conduct research projects
in their area of interest. Applicants are required to submit their research proposal to be
assessed by the Faculty before any final decision can be made by the Postgraduate Studies
Committee.

Applicants are expected to have a good background in research methodology and fluent
in the language selected for their research. As part of the evaluation process, they may
be required to sit and pass a special examination together with oral examination to be
conducted by the Faculty and fulfil necessary requirements as prescribed by Postgraduate
Regulations of UNISSA. Successful applicants will be supervised by academic staff member
appointed by the Faculty.

JUSTICE SYSTEM

This programme is outlined in order to expose the understanding and skills towards
the practicality of Shariah law. It is open for registration to any related Shariah Law
enforcement officer and authority from various government agencies.

The main objective of this programme is to provide basic knowledge with regards to laws
of hudud, qisas, diyat and ta‘zir for the enrolled individuals. It is also intended to provide
anequipped exposure on the theoretical and practical skill towards achieving the optimum
implementation of the Shariah Penal Code Order, 2013.

HIGHER NATIONAL DIPLOMA IN SHARIAH
CRIMINAL JUSTICE SYSTEM

This programme offers a comprehensive knowledge of hudud, qisas, diyat and ta‘zir to
itspractitioners and to guide them to critical thinking and practical application. It also
coaches the applicants towards a professional approach in implementing the Shariah
Penal Code Order, 2013.

This programme aims at preparing students in studies of Islamic Jurisprudence and
its related fields of works, such as ifta, religious monitoring and supervision, religious
consultancy, teaching, mentoring and Imamah.

Students undertaking this programme will be equipped with wide and deep knowledge of
Islamic Fiqh and Usul. They will also be taught basic research skills in order to prepare
them for any postgraduate studies and/or research-oriented career.

BACHELOR OF SHARIAH (FIQH AND
JUDICIARY)

This programme aims at preparing students for a career in the Islamic Judiciary and
related professions, such as administrative officers in the Shariah courts, Shariah public
and private practice.

In addition to the general Shariah and Usul al-Fiqh courses, students of this programme
will also be taught practical courses including the study of Islamic Family Law, Islamic
Criminal Law, Law of Evidence in Shariah Courts, Civil Procedure in Shariah Courts and
Criminal Procedure in Shariah Courts.

Although this programme has a judicial orientation, it will also be relevant to Shariah
(Fiqh and Usul)-related careers.

UNISSA’s LL.B & BSL degree is a distinctive 5-year double-degree programme which
provides a practically oriented pathway to the prestigious profession of legal and prospectus
shariah practice. The degrees will equip graduates with the necessary knowledge and
understanding on a wide range of legal and Shariah courses, and the required intellectual,
application and transferable skills, to enable them to embark on a wide choice of legal and
Shariah career paths.

Students will be introduced to courses on the legal and Shariah concepts and principles
within the core and compulsory academic components of the programme that underpin
the legal dimensions of the Bruneian legal system, which is based on the Shariah and the
common law and the courses offered are as required under the professional and vocational
components of both the legal and Shariah studies. The curriculum is meticulously
structured to enable students to qualify on an equal standing with any graduates of similar
LL.B and Bachelor of Shariah programmes elsewhere, regionally and internationally.

DIPLOMA IN ISLAMIC LAW AND
LEGAL PRACTICE

This programme offer graduate candidates the opportunity to pursue and complete studies
leading to a Master degree, Ph.D degree, or a Postgraduate Diploma, in Shariah. The
programme will sharpen and enhance the skills of the candidates to undertake empirical
research and produce quality academic writing.

The possible career paths for Master and Ph.D graduates include advisory positions,
research personnel, and academic positions at colleges or universities. The Diploma in
Islamic Law and Legal Practice holders would be able to enrol as a Shariah practitioner in
the Shariah Court.

MASTER OF SHARIAH
(COURSEWORK AND DISSERTATION)

The aim of this programme is to strengthen and enhance the students’ knowledge in
Islamic Fiqh and its principles (Usul al-Fiqh) through the coursework and to enable them
to produce a genuine work of research in the form of a dissertation on one of a variety of
Shariah areas of specialisation.

The first component of this programme (coursework) consists of 6 courses (4 credit hours
each) which are spread over 2 regular semesters. Students have to pass the coursework
component in order to be permitted to register for the dissertation, which should normally
be completed in one year.

prospectus Since the medium of instruction of this programme is Arabic, admitted students are
required to sit for a placement test to determine the level of their Arabic proficiency.
2018 / 2019 Depending on the results of this placement test, a student may be required to have one or
two courses in Arabic or may be exempted from taking such courses if he/she scored high
marks in the test.

MASTER OF SHARIAH (RESEARCH)

The aim of this programme is to encourage research culture in the country, especially
in areas of practical or applied subjects such as Islamic banking, Islamic family law,
al-zakah, al-waqf, etc.

An applicant of this programme should submit a research proposal to be assessed by the

30 faculty before any final decision can be made by the Postgraduate Studies Committee.
Unlike the Masters programme by coursework and research, the applicant of this
programme has a choice to write his thesis in either Arabic, English or Malay.

MASTER OF LAWS (RESEARCH)

This programme aims at developing an advanced legal research environment in Brunei
and the region. The programme is suitable for law graduates and relevant qualified
professionals who wish to develop legal writing and research skills at an advanced level.
The programme can be undertaken on various research topics as approved by the Faculty
of Shariah and Law. The objectives of this programme are to produce graduates who
specialise in various areas of law.

The programme develops and produces graduates with an advanced level of comprehension,
research, and analytical legal skills, as well as graduates who are competent in research and
writing. The programme, wherever relevant, develops the graduates’ ability to undertake a
comparative study of law, especially in Shariah.

Upon completion of the programme, the graduates will show that they are acquainted
with various literatures relating to the topic of their thesis, and produce a high standard of
written work with satisfactory credits.

This four (4) year programme aims at providing students with knowledge of Arabic
linguistics and literature such as literature, rhetoric, literary criticism, linguistic, applied prospectus
linguistics, grammar, morphology and translation. Eventually this background of
knowledge will help them to understand the meaning of the The Holy Qur’an and the
Prophetic Hadith as well as to use the arabic sources, which are essential to understand
the knowledge as potential references. It also enables them to translate from and into
Arabic language. In addition, it will equip them with appropriate knowledge and
mechanism which will help them with their writing for academic exercises and to pursue
their postgraduate studies.

The ultimate outcome of all these aims is to produce capable graduates who are equipped
with knowledge, skills and moral values that qualify them to serve the country and the
Islamic ummah as well.

MASTER OF ARABIC LANGUAGE

This programme aims to:
w Prepare competent researchers in the field of Arabic linguistics and literature
w Promote the students' academic abilities in Arabic language and its literature;
w Qualify students to conduct their research and produce theses in present-day issues

in Arabic language and literature plus issues in classical Arabic linguistics and
literature;
w Help students to conduct their research and produce researches on issues relating to
Arabic language and literature in Brunei and the learners respective countries;
w Train learners who can critically read and understand linguistic / literature in their
fields; and
w Transmit in-depth knowledge of the structure and function of language and its use
and change from various theoretical perspectives.

This programme, which is tailored to produce scholars and experts in field of Arabic
linguistics and literature, aims to:

w Prepare scholars and experts in Arabic Literature who are committed to spiritual,
moral, intellectual and creative excellence;

The objective of this programme is to produce Muslim human capitals who have a broad prospectus
understanding and capability in various areas such as Islamic banking and finance and
conventional banking.

This programme provides a strong core curriculum providing students a strong foundation
of knowledge. BScIF is designed to provide students with a specialist knowledge set and
skills that arise out of combining the sciences of conventional and Islamic Finance and
Banking. It gives an in-depth study of Islamic Banking and Finance both locally and globally
including Takaful, Management, and issues related to Islamic Economic Management.

Career Prospects: To work as bankers and finance officers in Islamic finance and other
Islamic financial institutions in public or private sectors. Besides, they can also become
educators and researchers to uphold Islamic banking system in Brunei to develop the
economy of the country.
