The importance of fairy tales for children

Fairy tales are the stories that adults, especially parents, tell young children. In view of their name,
it is surprising that hardly any of them are actually about fairies. (28) ______ most fairy tales have
happy endings, the stories usually deal with very (29) ______situations – children abandoned in the
forest, terrifying giants, cruel stepmothers. However, despite being scared when they are told the
stories, children will often ask (30) ______ them over and over again.
Many psychologists believe that what fairy tales do, in addition to stimulating children’
imagination, is to show that there are problems in the world and that they can be overcome. Just like
adults, children have fears and worries; there are of things such abandonment, loss, injuries, witches.
Fairy tales present real problems in a fantasy form (31) ______ children are able to understand. This,
it is claimed, allows them to (32) ______ their fears and to realize, if ever in their unconscious mind,

The costs and benefits of global warming will vary greatly from area to area. For moderate climate
change, the balance can be difficult to assess. But the larger the change in climate, the more negative
the consequences will become. Global warming will probably make life harder, not easier, for most
people. This is mainly because we have already built enormous infrastructure based on the climate we
now have.
People in some temperate zones may benefit from milder winters, more abundant rainfall, and
expanding crop production zones. But people in other areas will suffer from increased heat waves,
Coastal erosion, rising sea level, more erratic rainfall, and droughts.
The crops, natural vegetation, and domesticated and wild animals (including seafood) that sustain
people in a given area may be unable to adapt to local ơr regional changes in climate. The ranges of
diseases and insect pests that are limited by temperature may expand, if other environmental conditions
are also favourable.
In its summary report on the impacts of climate change, the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate
Change stated, ‘Taken as a whole, the range of published evidence indicates that the net damage costs
of climate change are likely to be significant and to increase over time.”

CULTURE SHOCK
Culture shock is the way our brain and our personality react to the strange new things we encounter
when we move from one culture to another. Psychologists tell us that there are four basic stages that
human beings pass through when they enter and live in a new culture.
Culture begins with the "honeymoon stage". This is the period of time when we first arrive in which
everything about the new culture is strange and exciting. We may be suffering from "jet lag" but we
are thrilled to be in the new environment, seeing new sights, hearing new sounds and language, eating
new kinds of food.
Unfortunately, the second stage of culture shock can be more difficult. After we have settled down
into our new life, we can become very tired and begin to miss our homeland. This "rejection stage"
can be quite dangerous because the visitor may develop unhealthy habits such as smoking and drinking
too much. This can lead to the person getting sick or developing skin infections or rashes which then
makes the person feel even more scared and confused and helpless. This stage is considered a crisis in
the process of cultural adjustment and many people choose to go back to their homeland or spend all
their time with people from their own culture speaking their native language.
The third stage of culture shock is called the "adjustment stage". This is when you begin to realize
that things are not so bad in the host culture. Your sense of humour usually becomes stronger and you
realize that you are becoming stronger by learning to take care of yourself in the new place. Things are
still difficult, but you are now a survivor!
The fourth stage can be called "at ease at last". Now you feel quite comfortable in your new
surroundings. You can cope with most problems that occur. You may still have problems with the
language, but you know you are strong enough to deal with them. If you meet someone from your
country who has just arrived, you can be the expert on life in the new culture and help them to deal
with their culture shock.
There is a fifth stage of culture shock which many people don't know about. This is called "reverse
culture shock". Surprisingly, this occurs when you go back to your native culture and find that you
have changed and that things there have changed while you have been away. Now you feel a little
uncomfortable back home. Life is a struggle!

ACID DUST
“Calcite-containing dust particles blow into the air and combine with nitric acid in polluted air from
factories to form an entirely new particle-calcium nitrate,” said Alexander Laskin, a senior research
scientist at the Department of Energy’s Pacific Northwest National Laboratory in Richland,
Washington. These nitrates have optical and chemical properties that are completely different from
those of the originally dry dust particles. Due to this, climate models need to be updated to reflect this
chemistry. Calcite dust is common in areas such as Israel, where scientists collected particles for
analysis.

Working from a mountaintop, the team collected dust that had blown in from the northern shores
of Egypt, Sinai, and southern Israel. The particles had combined with air containing pollutants that
came from Cairo. They analyzed nearly 2,000 individual particles and observed the physical and
chemical changes at the W.R Wiley Environmental Molecular Sciences Laboratory.
A key change in the properties of the newly formed nitrate particles is that they begin to absorb
water and retain the moisture. These wet particles can scatter and absorb sunlight - presenting climate
modelers, who need to know where energy is going, a new wild card to deal with. Companion studies
of dust samples from the Sahara and the Saudi coast and loess from China show that the higher the
calcium in the mineral, the more reactive they are in with nitric acid. And once the particle is changed,
it stays that way.
“When dust storms kick up these particles and they enter polluted areas, the particles change,”
Laskin said. “To what extent this is happening globally, as more of the world becomes industrialized,
we don't know. But now we have the laboratory and field evidence that shows it is definitely
happening. The story is much more complicated than anybody thought.”

A. No, but they continue to absorb the sun's energy.
B. Yes, but the changes are temporary.
C. No, and the particles do not change.
D. Yes, and the changes are permanent.
Question 36: Which of the following may be a result of these particles?
A. We may see an increase in carbon dioxide.
B. We may see more rainbows.

correct answer to each of the following questions
Children all around the world love to read comic books. Maybe they like to read the kind of comic
books that come out once a month, like Spiderman or Batman, or maybe they like manga style comic
books. That means that publishers who make comic books need to keep in touch with the things young
people like to do. One thing that many young people today are interested in is technology, so of course
kids want to read digital comic books on electronic devices.
Let's take Japanese manga as an example. There are lots of people around the world who enjoy reading
manga. However, in the past, it was difficult to find translated versions of manga in comic bookstores.
But that did not stop manga fans. Some fans who could translate Japanese into their own language
started translating manga themselves. Then they scanned the pages of manga books and uploaded the
scanned pages to the Internet with their translation. This practice has become so popular. People in the
comic book industry made up a name for it. By combining the words scan and translation, they call it
"scanlation", and it is a big problem today. The people who do scanlation usually share their manga
for free, so readers do not buy manga books. Writers, artists, and publishers all end up losing money
because of scanlation. Another problem is piracy in the comic book industry. Illegal copies of old and
brand-new comics alike have been hurting comic book sales. Despite the progress made in converting
comics to digital formats, hardcopy comic books are still by far the most popular format among fans.
In the meantime, comic book publishers and stores will just have to keep an eye on their buyers' habits.
As the popularity of digital books for e- readers and tablets grows, the popularity of digital comic
books will grow as well.

A striking feature of Vietnam’s remarkable progress over the last few decades is the rapid pace
of urbanization. In 1986, there were fewer than 13 million urban residents. Today there are 30 million.
Cities have become strong growth forces, with urban areas growing twice as fast as the national
average rate, and contributing over half of the country’s gross domestic product.
Vietnam needs to reshape its urbanization process to create more efficient cities – cities that
have sufficient population densities are well - connected internally and regionally, and well- managed.
In addition, in line with Vietnam’s strong preference for social equity, cities will need to ensure
inclusion of all residents, with no groups or area “left behind.”
Meanwhile, rural residents increasingly lag behind their urban counterparts in income and
access to services, leading many to migrate to cities. Migration presents challenges for urban
management but also opportunities to enhance labor mobility. Fortunately, these trends can be
reserved.
For example, four years ago, Alley 76 in Binh Thanh district, Ho Chi Minh City was only
narrow enough for one motorbike to get through. Store owner Bui Thi Mai knows firsthand how a
clean and efficient city can make or break a business. When it rained, the alley was often flooded with
floating garbage and mosquitoes. Crime was increasing. Today, after undergoing major upgrading
under an urban renewal project, the street is cleaner, safer and trucks carry goods to her door. Her
family income has soared and her life has been completely changed.

correct answer to each of the questions from 43 to 50.
Herman Melville, an American author best known today for his novel Moby Dick, was actually
more popular during his lifetime for some of his other works. He traveled extensively and used the
knowledge gamed during his travels as the basis for his early novels. In 1837, at the age of eighteen,
Melville slimed as a cabin boy on a merchant ship that was to sail from his Massachusetts home to
Liverpool, England. His experiences on this trip served as a basis for the novel Redburn (1849). In
1841 Melville set out on a whaling ship headed for the South Seas. After jumping ship in Tahiti, he
wandered around the islands of Tahiti and Moorea. This South Sea island sojourn was a backdrop to
the novel Omoo (1847). After three years away from home, Melville joined up with a U.S. naval frigate
that was returning to the eastern United States around Cape Horn. The novel White-Jacket (1850)
describes this lengthy voyage as a navy seaman. With the publication of these early adventure novels,
Melville developed a strong and loyal following among readers eager for his tales of exotic places and
situations. However, in 1851, with the publication of Moby Dick, Melville's popularity started to
diminish. Moby Dick, on one level the saga of the hunt for the great white whale, was also a heavily
symbolic allegory of the heroic struggle of humanity against the universe. The public was not ready
for Melville's literary metamorphosis from romantic adventure to philosophical symbolism. It is
ironic that the novel that served to diminish Melville's popularity during his lifetime is the one for
which he is best known today.

In 1989, the oil tanker Exxon-Valdez ran aground on a reef in Prince William Sound in Alaska spilling
11 million gallons of oil. The spill fouled up about 1300 miles of shoreline and caused the death of
some 300,000 birds. One of the most vibrant ecosystems on planet Earth was gravely affected by this
horrendous disaster.
Now, about thirty years later, journalists and television news reporters have returned to the scene to
look for signs of lingering damage or alternatively of positive healing. It comes as no surprise that they
report they have found both, although the balance still tips heavily in favor of damage.
On the damage side, oily residues still continue to mar the beaches while traces of oil are still staining
the waters off the coast. The once bountiful herring population is now drastically reduced, thus
affecting the entire food web. Earlier, 2600 sea otters had perished and there are no signs that the sea
otter will ever recover from this initial blow. Many bird species have also similarly not quite recovered
and this includes species such as the cormorant, the guillemot, and the marbled murelet.
Equally serious, if not more so, reporters have discovered the presence of polycyclic aromatic
hydrocarbons in stream beds at concentration levels exceeding the maximum allowed by state. If
prompt action is not taken, these hydrocarbons will continue to harm and possibly kill young salmon
of years to come.
Human destinies have also been affected. The livelihood of fisherman has been seriously threatened
and although in the days following the spill, they have successfully sued Exxon Company for damages,
they have yet to see a penny of the award. This is because Exxon is appealing against the award of
US$5 billion. While waiting for the appeal to come through, bitterness continues to be rife among the
fishermen.
On the healing side, reporters have noted that the bald eagle has made complete recovery. The outlook
also seems good for inter-tidal and sub-tidal communities.

The green building movement, started in the 1970s as a way to reduce environmental destruction,
is changing the way buildings are constructed. In the early years, green builders were a small minority,
and their goals of reducing the environmental impact of buildings were considered unrealistic. Now,
however, the movement is growing, as builders have been able to take advantage of new technology.
Green builders try to make use of recycled materials, which means less waste in dump. Also, they
reduced environmental impact by reducing the energy requirement of a buildings. One way is to
provide an alternative, non-polluting source of energy. First, with solar panels, it is possible to produce
electricity from the rays of the sun. Once installed, they provide energy at no cost and with no
pollution.
Another solution is to reduce the amount of energy required in a building. It is possible to cut
electricity use noticeable by improving natural lighting and installing low-energy light bulbs. To
reduce the amount of fuel needed for heating or cooling, builders also add insulations to the walls so
that the building stays warmers in winter and cooler in summer.
One example of this advanced design is the Genzyme Center of Cambridge, the most
environmentally responsible office building in America. Every aspect of the design and building had
to consider two things: the need to lessen the negative environment impact. 75 percent of the building
materials were recycled materials, and the energy use has been reduced by 43 percent and water use
by 32 percent, compared with other buildings of the same size.
In other parts of the world, several large-scale projects have recently been developed according to
green building principles. One of these in Vauban, Germany, in an area that was once the site of army
housing. The site has been completely rebuilt with houses, heated by special non-polluting systems,
are also equipped with solar panels.
A larger project is under way in China. The first phase of this project will include houses for 400
families built with solar power, non-polluting bricks, and recycled wall insulation. In a second phase,
entire neighborhoods in six cities will be built. If all goes well, the Chinese government plans to copy
these ideas in new neighborhood across China.
Green building ideas, on a small or large scale, are spreading. Individuals, companies, and
governments are beginning to see their benefits. Not only are they environmentally friendly, green
buildings improve living and working conditions and also save money in the long run.

Until recently, hunting for treasure from shipwrecks was mostly fantasy; with recent
technological advances, however, the search for sunken treasure has become more popular as a
legitimate endeavor. This has caused a debate between those wanting to salvage the wrecks and those
wanting to preserve them.
Treasure hunters are spurred on by the thought of finding caches of gold coins or other valuable
objects on a sunken ship. One team of salvagers, for instance, searched the wreck of the RMS Republic,
which sank outside the Boston harbor in 1900. The search party, using side-scan sonar, a device that
projects sound waves across the ocean bottom and produces a profile of the sea floor, located the wreck
in just two and a half days. Before the use of this new technology, such searches could take months or
years. The team of divers searched the wreck for two months, finding silver tea services, crystal
dinnerware, and thousands of bottles of wine, but they did not find the five and a half tons of American
Gold Eagle coins they were searching for.
Preservationists focus on the historic value of a ship. They say that even if a shipwreck's
treasure does not have a high monetary value, it can be an invaluable source of historic artifacts that
are preserved in nearly mint condition. But once a salvage team has scoured a site, much of the
archaeological value is lost. Maritime archaeologists who are preservationists worry that the success
of salvagers will attract more treasure-hunting expeditions and thus threaten remaining undiscovered
wrecks. Preservationists are lobbying their state lawmakers to legally restrict underwater searches and
unregulated salvages. To counter their efforts, treasure hunters argue that without the lure of gold and
million-dollar treasures, the wrecks and their historical artifacts would never be recovered at all.

Most forms of property are concrete and tangible, such as houses, cars, furniture or anything else
that is included in one’s possessions. Other forms of property can be intangible, and copyright deals
with intangible forms of property. Copyright is a legal protection extended to authors of creative works,
for example books magazine articles, maps, films, plays, television shows, software, paintings,
photographs, music, choreography in dance and all other forms of intellectual or artistic property.
Although the purpose of artistic property is usually public use and enjoyment, copyright
establishes the ownership of the creator. When a person buys a copyrighted magazine, it belongs to
this individual as a tangible object. However, the authors of the magazine articles own the research
and the writing that went into creating the articles. The right to make and sell or give away copies of
books or articles belongs to the authors, publishers, or other individuals or organizations that hold the
copyright. To copy an entire book or a part of it, permission must be received from the copyright
owner, who will most likely expect to be paid.
Copyright law distinguishes between different types of intellectual property. Music may be
played by anyone after it is published. However, if it is performed for profit, the performers need to
pay a fee called a royalty. A similar principle applies to performances of songs and plays. On the other
hand, names, ideas and book titles are excepted. Ideas do not become copyrighted property until they
are published in a book a painting or a musical work. Almost all artistic work created before the 20th
century is not copyrighted because it was created before the copyright law was passed.
The two common ways of infringing upon the copyright are plagiarism and piracy. Plagiarizing
the work of another person means passing it off as one’s own. The word plagiarism is derived from
the Latin plaglarus, which means “abductor”. Piracy may be an act of one person, but, in many cases,
it is a joint effort of several people who reproduce copyrighted material and sell it for profit without
paying royalties to the creator. Technological innovations have made piracy easy and anyone can
duplicate a motion picture on videotape a computer program, or a book. Video cassette recorders can
be used by practically anyone to copy movies and television programs, and copying software has
become almost as easy as copying a book. Large companies zealously monitor their copyrights for
slogans, advertisements, and brand names, protected by a trademark.

The day after Thanksgiving has become America’s biggest shopping day. Closed all day on
Thursday, shopping centers all across the nation open early on Friday. Some of them open at 12:01
Friday morning, while others open at 4 a.m. Some “sleepyhead” shopping centers, like Target this
year, don’t open their doors on Friday until 6 a.m. From Friday to the day before Christmas, this is the

season when businesses make nearly 25 percent of what they earn in a year. This season puts many
businesses “in the black”, that is, they make the money they need for the year.
Reporters from local TV stations interview people who sleep in tents in front of the shops a day or
two before the doors open on Friday. These people patiently wait in queue to get products that 50
percent cheaper or more.
“Oh, we have fun,” said one of the persons queuing. “We sometimes bring games to play, we watch
TV and order lots of pizza, and we often meet interesting people. And, most important of all, we save
a lot!” The problem, of course, is that only a very small number of products have big reductions in
their prices. Apart from a few big discounts, each shop has other things that are reduced from 10 to 50
percent, saving shoppers from $10 to $400 per item, and so Americans want to go shopping.
Not all Americans enjoy shopping. Reverend William Graham wants to change Black Friday’s
name. “We want to call it Remember Jesus Friday. People should start the season with the right
attitude. Christmas has become a Season of Shopping. We want to make it a Season of Giving. And
we don’t mean giving material things. We mean giving your back, your mind, and your hands. Help
an old lady clean up her house. Teach a kid how to read. Visit sick people in the hospital or in nursing
homes…”

Read the following passage and mark the letter A, B, C, or D on your answer sheet to indicate the
correct answer to each of the following questions
The increasing use of Internet search function, primarily through the largest search engine of
Google, has changed the habits of readers.
Critics of newspapers as a medium also argue that while today’s newspapers may appear visually
different from their copies a century ago, in many respects they have change little, but have failed to
keep pace with changes in society. The technology revolution has meant that readers who were
accustomed to waiting for a daily newspaper can now receive up-to-the-minute updates from websites,
bloggers and social media such as Facebook or Twitter. Social media sites have been overtaking
television as a source for news for young people.
Where once the ability to circulate information was restricted to those with printing news or
broadcast television and radios, the Internet has enabled thousands of commentators to communicate
directly with others through blogs or instant message services. Instead of searching for the publication
of their interest in newspapers, readers are more likely to seek particular writers or personal blogs
online. When they go online, each of them is their own journalist as well as their own editor.
The gloomy outlook of newspapers is not universal. In some countries, such as India, the newspaper
remains more popular than Internet and broadcast media. Even where the problems are felt most
keenly, in North America and Europe, there have been recent success stories, such as the dramatic rise
of free daily newspapers, such as Sweden’s Metro International, local weekly shoppers, and so-called
local news.
Overall, average operating profits for newspapers remain very low and is falling rapidly. Some
newspaper companies are likely in debt because they have been unable to find buyers and concerned
with increasing competition.

Pollution emitted in industrial areas represents a threat to human health and the surrounding
natural resources. We have a tendency to believe that the production processes are the only source of
environmental damage, and often forget about the possible long–term effects of harmful production
practices. We may think that the closure of these huge industrial areas would improve the quality of
the environment. Unfortunately, this ignores the threat of the remaining waste, which is abandoned

and poorly stored. It represents an even bigger danger because it stands neglected as it degrades and
leaks into the earth without any control at all.
Changes in the water chemistry due to surface water contamination can affect all levels of an
ecosystem. It can affect the health of lower food chain organisms and, consequently, the availability
of food up through the food chain. It can damage the health of wetlands and damage their ability to
support healthy ecosystems, control flooding, and filter pollutants from storm water runoff. The health
of animals and humans are affected when they drink or bathe in contaminated water. In addition, water-
based organisms, like fish and shellfish, can pile up and concentrate contaminants in their bodies.
When other animals or humans eat these organisms, they receive a much higher dose of contaminant
than they would have if they had been directly exposed to the original contamination.
Contaminated groundwater can badly affect animals, plants and humans if it is removed from
the ground by manmade or natural processes. Depending on the study of rocks of the area, groundwater
may rise to the surface through springs or seeps, flow sideways into nearby rivers, streams, or ponds,
or sink deeper into the earth. In many parts of the world, groundwater is pumped out of the ground to
be used for drinking, bathing, other household uses, agriculture, and industry.
Contaminants in the soil can harm plants when they take up the contamination through their
roots. Eating, breathing in, or touching contaminated soil, as well as eating plants or animals that have
piled up soil contaminants can badly affect the health of humans and animals.
Air pollution can cause breathing-related problems and other bad health effects as contaminants
are absorbed from the lungs into other parts of the body. Certain air contaminants can also harm
animals and humans when they contact the skin. Plants rely on breathing for their growth and can also
be affected by exposure to contaminants moved in the air.

How to protect children Web fans from unsuitable material online while encouraging them to
use the Internet has long been discussed in the US.
For some parents, the Internet can seem like a jungle, filled with danger for their children. But
jungles contain wonders as well as hazard and with good guides, some education, and a few
precautions, the wilds of the Internet can be safely navigated. “Kids have to be online. If we tell our
kids they can’t be allowed to surf the Internet, we’re cutting them off from their future,” said an expert.
Most kids have started to use search engines. Many of them are great for finding tons of interesting
Internet sites, and they can also locate places where you might not want your kids to go. There are
search engines designed just for kids. A certain software contains only sites that have been selected as
safe. The most popular way would be to use what is known as a “content screener”. But this can’t be
wholly reliable, and the best thing parents can do is to talk to their kids and let them know what is OK
or not OK to see or do on the Internet. Another way is that mum or dad is nearby when the child is
surfing the Internet. A few other tips as follows:
Don’t put the PC in a child’s room but keep it in an area where mum or dad can keep an eye
on things. That also makes the Internet more of a family activity.
Ask your child what he or she has been doing and about any friends they make online.
Tell your child not to give online strangers personal information, especially like address and
phone number.
And tell your children never to talk to anyone they meet on line over the phone, send them anything,
accept anything from them or agree to meet with them unless you go along.
