Elaine was amazed with the change in her brother. She was thankful that Alex did not resent Carl anymore. Carl was a nice person and she had hoped that Alex would take him as his friend. She knew Carl needed all the friends he could get, especially in his condition. On a hot afternoon about a week later, Alex was half asleep in the living room when his sister arived home. She was very upset. She said that Carl had not been himself lately and was acting very strange. Alex could tell that Elaine was worried. He was worried himself. " Let's go to his apartment, " Alex suggested. Elaine thought that it was a good idea. She knew where Carl lived. They left the house almost immediately. When they got off the bus, there was a small crowd in front of Carl's apartment building. Alex was horrifed when he looked up and saw Carl on the ledge of his window on the ninth floor, a step away from taking his life. Elaine yelled at Carl who saw them on the sidewalk. Carl moved away from the window on the narrow ledge. He had been there for the past half an hour. "Has anyone called the police?" Aiex asked the crowd. Nobody answered. No one really cared much if Carl were to jump: In fact, they would love to see someone jump and have his hrains splattered all across the sidewalk. They were ready for entertainment. Frustrated, AIex turned to his sister. "Go call the police. I'll see if I can talk him out of jumping. " As Elaine disappeared into the street, Alex rushed up the building. He found Carl's apartment unlocked. His parents were not at home. He rushed to the window and saw Carl about three metres away, standing on a narrow ledge. Carl saw him. " Go away, Alex, " he said. " Don't come any closer, " " What are you doing, Carl ? " Alex said. " You'll get yourself killed I " " That's what I intend to do. " "But Why?" Carl threw him a questioning look. "Don't you see, Alex," he whined, "I'm an AIDS victim. " "But you have a lot to live for, Carl," Alex reasoned with him. "Maybe tomorrow, they'll find a cure for you. Maybe it'll be next week. " " Maybe it'll never happen, " Carl cut him short. " You don't understhnd, do you Alex ? There's just some things that you don't understand about me. I have nothing to live for. " " Want can he so awful ? " he asked, slowly climbing up onto the ledge. " You really want to know ? " Carl cried. The wind was starting to blow. Carl could not keep his halance very long, Alex thought. " How do you feel if you walk out of your school to see a mob'of angry parents trying to kick you out of the school for fear of their children's safety ? Would you like to be pelted with eggs every time you walk by a grocery ? Would you like to be chased by men with dogs every time you jog through the park ? " Carl cried. " Would you ?! " There were no answers for Carl's questions. Alex had to act fast. " Carl, Iisten to me, " he pleaded. " There are people who care for you. Elaine cares for you." LL2 " There's " But I'm ie you. Elaine staled blankly at her brother. "A wanior died," he said as he closed the door Hazrin bin Hashim 5 Tegas ( i989 ) PI."AYING WITH FIRE AND DEATH ( SHORT STORY WRITING COMPETITION - SECOND PRIZE ) Betty began her endless daily chores by scrubbing the marble floor of the gigantic mansion. She would not rest until later in the evening, after dinner. She was a prisoner in her own home, a modern day Cinderella. As her numb fingers scrubbed the marble floor, Patricia rushed through the corridor without noticing that the floor was wet and slippery. She fell with a loud thud. "You imbecile l" she cried. Her back ached. "What a lovely time for you to scrub the floor l" Her hand landed neatly on Betty's cheek. Betty kept her silence. She knew it was useless to try to argue with Patricia. She would only hit her again and it was enough that Betty's cheek was stung by Patricia's slap. " Patricia, dear ! " a voice came from the front door. " Look who's home ! " Patricia ran to her father, Ieaving a thankful Betty who was glad she had gone. Patricia gave a slight squeal when she saw a man in the living-room. It was her half-brother Paul. Paul had spent five years in Europe and had never been home since he was eighteen when he entered active seruice in the army. Now, a handsome, young officer in the army, Paul had finally returned home. He was surprised to find Betty, and was more surprised to see his father and halfsister treating her as if she were a slave. Finally, he learned from Patricia that Betty had came into the family four years ago, when she was sixteen. Bettina Sabre, her real name, was a daughter of their father's friend. The wealthy man apparently died and left Betty without a family. He named Clark Hydes, their father, as Betty's guardian in his will. Mr. Hydes was to look after Betty's welfare until her twenty-first birthday when she would take over controi of her father's immense wealth. Mr. Hydes apparently took iittle notice of the will and treated Betty's property as his own. He moved into her mansion with Patricia and treated her as a slave, putting on occasional acts when her father's Iawyers came to visit to make sure everything was all right. Paul made no comment over the matter. He observed her every movement and soon, his family saw him treating Betty the same way they treated her. Previously Betty had to serve two masters. Now she had three. The summer vacation had only begun. A few weeks later, in July, Mr. Hydes summoned his son into his room. The two men sat facing each other beside the fire place. None of them spoke, until Mr. Hydes broke the ice. 114 "We mi "whv? Paul carried her out of the cabin. Patricia and his father followed him. They stood at the door as Paul dragged her for about ten metres and put her down under a tree, half hidden from where Mr. Hydes stood. He iooked at his father. " Kill her, " he said. " I don't want her alive. " Hearing the words of his father, Paul shot Betty. While Patricia and her father celebrated in the cabin, Paul was out disposing Betty's body in the woods. He said that a bear might find the body and make it its dinner, producing the perfect explanation for Betty's death. Patricia was sipping champange when she felt warm, very warm. " Why is it warm, dad ? " she asked. Mr. Hydes felt the change, too. He looked around the house and listened carefully. The walls were making a strange noise, as if................. Mr. Hydes jumped up and grabbed her daughter. "The house's on fire !" he yelled as he rushed to the door. He tried to open it but it was locked from the outside. He tried every exit available but they were all sealed. " The axe is missing, Dad, " Patricia yelled as the fire began to engulf them. " There's no way we can get out ! " Mr. Hydes screamed. Paul sat silently in the car, fidling with his revolver. Betty entered the car and sat next to him. " Thanks for not shooting live bullets, " she said. Paul kept his silence. " Why did you help me kill your father ? " she asked. Paul drew a long breath. "It all happened about twenty years ago," he began. "My father was still married to my mother. They had a rocky marriage, and only my presence helped to avoid a divorce. It did not help my father from having affairs with other women though. " "My father had an affair with Prudence, who later gave birth to Patricia after they got married. My mother found out about it one night. They had a terrible fight. I was five then, and I saw it all happen. I saw her take the pills after the fight. She went into a coma for three weeks before she died. " I only understood the situation when I was seventeen. I found Mom's diary in attic. That's why I left to join the army. " Betty looked into Paul's eyes. There were things she did not know about that man. " Why kill Patricia ? " "She was a brat," he said. "I couldn't get along with her when we were kids and I saw no reason to let her live. " , Betty looked at the burning house behind her. The fire was at its peak. Suddenly, the caliin feli to the ground. " That's the end of them, " she quipped. Paul threw a glance at his watch. It was midnight. " Happy birthday, Betty, " he whisppered. Paul started the car and drove to the big city to ceiebrate. They had three reasons to celebrate. First, they had their revenge on Mr. Hydes and his daughter. Another reason rvas that they were to be married the next morning. lastly, they were millionaires. Azlimmi Himzal Ibrahim 4 Cekal ( 1989 ) A TRIP TO THE OTHER DIMENSION (sHoRT STORY WRITING COMPETTTTON - CONSOLATTON PRrZE ) The rain fell heavily as I twisted the throttle of my motorcycle. Zooming past a sign boarcl I could see the words "Kampung Lubuk Antu" clearly indicated on it. I peered through my visor curiously at a big hole about twenty metres in front of me. The folks of Kampung Lubuk Antu believed that anyone who entered the hole never came out again. My hair stood on end as I thought of the mysterious happenings at this hole. I released the throttle a little to slow down my motorcycie. Suddenly my motorcycle started to wobhle. I had run into a stone or something, I thought. But then it began to move towards the hole as if something invisible was puliing it. In aiarm, I tried to control the vehicle but it had gone out of hand. Then the whole world seemed to hlack out. I opened my eyes slowly. My vision became clearer and clearer. I stood up and looked around. Everything was the same as it was before, only I was a few metres in front of the mysterious hole. Rubbing off the dirt from my body I walked towards my motorcyle. The vehicle activated as I pressed the switch on its handle. Just before going to bed, Alex sang to himself. "You'd better watch out, you'd better watch out, you'd better watch out,'cause I'm tellirg you why, Santa Claus is coming to town. Thank you Santa." Far up in the North Pole, Santa smiled. He had brought another happy smile into the world. " And a very merry Christmas to you too."

KILLING ON AN ISI.AND OF BAHAMAS (SHORT STORY WRITING COMPETITION . CONSOLATION PRIZE ) Gary felt exhausted after spending about half an hour swimming in the sea. He was on vacation. He had been working with Supervision Company Ltd. for about 25 years and had never taken a vacation even on Christmas. So, here he was on one of the islands of Bahamas to spend his vacation. He walked to his chalet, about 300 metres from the beach. He sat in front of it and admired the view as the sun set on the horizon. He got up and went to the bathroom to wash and then lay on the bed. Suddenly there was a strong gust of wind. He woke up with a start and realised that he had fallen asleep. He had no idea how long he had slept as his watch was showing 9 o'clock and had stopped. He got up and found that the window was open. He could have sworn that he had locked the window earlier. He peered out only to find darkness surrounding the chalet. Flickers of light on his right momentarily caught his attention. He put on some clothes and opened the door slowly as if there was someone waiting for him in the darkness. He walked slowly and carefully, treading on the soft ground towards the flickers of lifth. It took him to the woods. As he was getting nearer, he could hear voices, chanting in a Ianguage he could not understand. He got nearer and stopped, about 10 metres away. He knelt behind some rocks and looked at the " voices " and what he saw made his hair stand on end. Several figures stood around a fire and in front of them were two bodies. The bodies were without heads. Blood was gushing out of the open wounds. He felt shaky and suddenly, they stopped chanting and walked towards him. He looked around to see if there was any other place to hide but it was too late. A hand grasped his shoulders and he felt another hand press his neck before he passed out. When he regained consciousness, he found himself on an altar made of rock. Near him was one of the figures and he was holding a sword. Terror filled his mind, a blood curling scream filled his throat. The police later found three bodies with their heads cut. A few months later, a couple moved into the same chalet and"........" THAT EXTRA MILE (BEST SPEAKER AWARD FOR PUBLIC SPEAKING DURING SCHOOL ASSEMBLY As the face of the world is changing, more and more people are advancing the gates of success. These glorious achievements we see today are done by normal beings Iike you and I who face the challenging times with a positive outlook and hold to their dreams and goals. Indeed, life without dreams and goais is empty. Therefore, should have a goal in life and this path will lead us to our destination - success However in pursuing our dreams, we may have to overcome a lot of barriers and foremost - our ownselves. Optimism, determination, will-power, patience, diligence just to mention a few are what we want, not pessimism, Iaziness, conceit, esteem, self-condemnation, etc. It is very important for us to change ourselves first before we change others and it is equally important for us to value our standard of ability like what people say :- Have the serenity to change the things we can, Courage to accept what we cannot change, And wisdom to know the difference. In short, whatever we do, put in our best but at the same time, do not gear for unreachable goals. Putting in our best means, for example, " If I am a teacher, I will be the best teacher I can be." Please take note here, I may not be the best teacher in the world but I am the best I can be ! So likewise if you are a student who always gets credits and not A's, get the best credits you can ! There is no need to feel guilty, unworthy or depressed if we have tried our best. Even in this school, we don't have to enter into the 'rat-race'and suffer from selfish competition with each other. When we slack in our studies, do not say - " I'm useless, I'll die. " or whatever, to condemn ourselves. Just remember, all of us have 28 bones, 19 muscles, 135 joints and 100 ligaments in each foot. Our ancestors survived. So, why can't we? Keep on moving, friends, go that extra mile. A little cornpetition is healthy to challenge us to maximise our potentials. If we can all overcome this self-condemnation and pessimism, we will be a step ahead. The next hinderance to our goal is laziness. Yes, laziness ! I think I will like to pose a question here - " How can we overcome laziness ?" AIl right, now let us imagine. AIl of us are going into a dark room. A dark room without any spark of light. What is the first thing that we should do ? Do we say to the darkness - "Darkness, darkness, go away, go away, shoo !"? It will definiteiy be as dark as ever. The wise thing to do is of course, to switch on the light. This is just a'comparision but many times we react in the same way. When we are lazy, we often would scold ourselves " Why are you so lazy, you shouldn't be so lazy, okay, don't be lazy anymore ! " And tlien, we go on nagging ! Will this solve our problem ? Instead, we should (like how we switched on the light ) switch on diligence I Be hard working from now I Putiing it in a nutshell, we have to know ourselves, change ourselves and gear ourselves towards our goal. Lastly, I will like to share with you something. Do put on your thinking caps I To the loser : Roses are beautiful but they have thorns. To the winner : Roses have thorns but they are beautiful ! , sadly put or , journey hor - irivang for a t:iinued our , pped there. '.:'emaban Bur . .'. of us mana Nooran and Hafiz went to the preparation room after this. Their arrival was 'greeted' by hard work and determination from the other debaters. In the end their time and energy spent in preparation paid off when they won 'comfortably ' over SM Sultan Abdul Halim. After this win, the English Debating team was to meet the Royal Military Coliege. Everyone was eager to win and avenge the defeat of our team to the same party last year. When we woke up the next day, the dorm was empty. At first we thought the team had abandoned us, so we sat there blinking. Only a few minutes later did we realize that all the basketball players had gone out early as they had a match that morning. After our breadfast, we headed for the preparation room. The English debaters were already practising when we reached there. Today we were debating against the Royal Military College. We were the proposition for the debate and the motion was " Competitive sports tend to promote aggressive behaviour rather than sportsmanship ". The debate started at 3 p.m. Unfortunately, luck was not on our side this time, we lost. Last year we had lost to them in the second round of the competition. Thus, our hope of winning the championship was demolished. Anywasy we were quite contented with ourselves as we had put up a very good fight. Nevertheless, the feeling of sadness, though not shown by all of us, was there. That night, at about 8.30 p.m., we put on our batik once again as there was a state dinner for all the participants. The food that they served was very delicious but as no seats were provided for the famished participants, we had to look for a decent place to sit and enjoy our food. Some of us even sat on the edge of the drains to eat our dinner. After dinner, we went to the preparation room and received the balance of our aliowance which was $ 16.50 for each person. Everyone was smiling when they were handed their money. We were told by En. Shamsuri that as there were no more basketball matches and dehates for us, we would be going sightseeing he next day. We all woke up very early the next morning as we were all very excited about the trip. At last we had a chance to go sightseeing. For us, the English Debating team, who had been left hehind a few times by the others who went exploring Ipoh it was long over due. We started our journey at 8.30a,m. We headed for Tasik S.M" Nor, a small amusement park but we had to cancel our plans as there was an overturned lomy blocking the road. This made it impassable to any vehicle. So we had to turn back and head for Teluk Batik which was about 90km from Ipoh. We finally reached there at about 11o'clock. Apart from nice blue water and the sandy beach, there was not really very much to see. We were quite bored actually as there was nothing much to do. We had a quick lunch in Lumut before proceeding to Tasik S.M. Nor. We finally reached there at 4p.m.All of us were excited when we saw a house of horror as we entered the park. At first we thought that it was very scary, so most of us, especially the girls, clutched each other's arms as we entered it. We entered it full of curiousity and not knowing what to expect. It was pitch dark inside. The SMS contingent was led by the brave Mr. Andrew Lee. But to our dismay, the house of homor did not turn out to be a frightful experience, it was more of a hilarious one. Then we broke up into smaller groups and explored the rest of the park. We stayed there until about 6 p.m. hefore we headed back to lpoh. Again, there was a buffet style dinner for all the participants at 8 o'clock. After dinner the SBP night was held. Quite a few SBP bands performed that night. There were a few sketches too. But the act which really captured the hearts of the audience was the " Wayang Kulit Hidup ' which was performed by SMS Machang. The show ended at 12.30a.m. At the prize giving ceremony held prior to the concert, our school won five awards for academic excellence based on the SRP and SPM exams. of 1988. Friday 24th November: We didn't do anything today as there weren't any basketball matches to play or any debates to attend. At 5.00p.m. there was the ciosing ceremony and 124 " Intelligence brand accord " The greatne kind."
