De Gruchy’s story goes back to the Napoleonic wars when in 1810,

Since the war – and a devastating fire at de Gruchy in 1944 – the two
stores have continued to grow and thrive, bucking the decline of the
department store in much of the UK.
‘The department store plays a greater role in people’s lives here on the

stops planes landing and parcels addressed to Jersey even end up going via
Jersey, USA. So customers appreciate the fact that they can come here and
be sure of finding what they want.’
And whilst there is a noticeable spike in footfall during the tourist
season, it is the islanders that make up the core customer base, says
Moore. ‘Most people work in St Helier so we are only a five-minute walk
away for most of our customers. Even so, we have to keep things fresh
and exciting – by putting on fashion shows or beauty events, for
example.’
Both stores have recently undergone massive refurbishments, not least
to better showcase their exclusive concessions which are another factor in

Lovely Lavender
In the summer months, the Jersey Lavender
Farm has to be one of the most delightfully
fragrant and picturesque attractions on the
Island. From mid-May to late July the
lavender is in bloom and makes for a
spectacular sight. But while soaking up the
beauty of the glorious lavender it should not
be forgotten that it is also a crop that needs
to be harvested and processed at the right
time to obtain the lavender oil that is used in
the range of Jersey Lavender products.
During the harvest time there's the unique
opportunity to learn about the processing of the lavender and other herbs.
From 5th June to 26th August in 2018 there is a talk in the distillery every
day at 11.30am and 3pm explaining how the precious oil is steam distilled
from the lavender flowers and other herbs and how it is then transformed
into Jersey Lavender's range of home and body products.
The farm itself is perfect for a peaceful stroll – around the herb gardens,
through shady woods and a bamboo collection and amongst the nine acres
of lavender. There is even a 'Discovery Trail' to follow, which is great fun
for children and adults alike, and feeding the many chickens and doves is
not to be missed too! At Sprigs Café, the farm offers delicious homemade
breakfasts, lunches and afternoon teas. You can even sit out on the café
veranda and enjoy the view of the beautiful garden scenery. In Sprigs Shop
you can find that perfect gift of "Lavender Farm magic” to take away with
you. You can also top up from home as the products are available from the
website - www.jerseylavender.co.uk.

6,000 years ago. A medieval chapel sits on top of the prehistoric

jewellery manufacturing workshop and the Windmill Inn. Visitors are free
to wander the tranquil, manicured gardens and the Windmill Inn is open
daily for breakfast, brunch, lunch and evening meals – perfect for refuelling
when you have spent a fascinating hour or two watching the master
craftsmen at work as well as browsing Catherine’s latest pieces.
Indeed it is difficult to tear your eyes away from the workbench where,
behind a panel of glass, head jeweller Paul Tranter and his team work with
precious metals and unique gemstones every day. Visitors are able to look
directly onto their workbench and it is incredible to admire their skill as
they make Catherine’s designs come alive. It certainly makes a change from
the typical office desk and computer, as you see the jeweller’s bench filled
with intricate tools, flaming torches and innovative pieces of technology.
Their patience is breathtaking as it can take 40 to 60 hours, sometimes
longer, to create one unique piece. The designs they work from are, of
course, flat and it is these master craftsmen who sculpt and build up the
layers to give depth to their creations.

handmade in Jersey.
This year, Catherine Best is working with the Paraiba Tourmaline, the
incredibly rare gemstone which has inspired some of her latest collections.
First discovered in Brazil, it is as beautiful as it is unique with vivid colours
ranging from emerald green through to electric blues and turquoise. But it
is the incandescent glow, caused by a high concentration of copper, that
makes these stones appear to light up from within, making Paraiba
Tourmalines incomparable to any other gem.
Two stunning pieces that feature the Paraiba Tourmaline are the
Antiquity Ring and the Enchanted Pendant.
Antiquity sets Paraiba Tourmaline at the heart of contemporary design.
The curves of the precious metal make their way lovingly around the ring,
mirroring the romance of wrapping your arms around your loved one. A
stunning piece of beauty to be treasured forever, Antiquity has been entirely
handmade and set with gemstones and diamonds of exceptional quality,
including the Brazilian Paraiba Tourmaline weighing just over 1.5 carats.
Enchanted Pendant is a Paraiba Tourmaline and diamond pendant in
platinum and 18ct white gold. This design holds an enchanted feel throughout,
and beating at the centre is the ever rare and beautiful Paraiba Tourmaline.
This piece has been lovingly crafted by the master jewellers into both platinum
and 18ct gold and surrounded by diamonds of exceptional quality.
See these, and many other pieces, in Catherine’s showroom where there is
something to suit all price ranges, from silver jewellery starting at a very
reasonable £40, through to limited editions and wherever your desires may
take you with completely unique one-off pieces. Many of Catherine Best’s
collections can be personalised with your own choice of stones and
engraving. Her craftsmen can also repair broken jewellery, create totally
bespoke designs, or help you to redesign old and unwanted jewellery into
something new and fresh that you will enjoy wearing for many years to come.

Independent traders are lucky in that there are no vast out-of-town retail
centres drawing shoppers away from the high street which is where
independents survive. This means that Jersey has avoided the decline of the
High Street which has hit so many small retailers in the rest of the UK.
Nevertheless, it’s not all plain sailing for the independents, says Little Star’s
Lara Rogers. There are still rates and rents to pay as well as stiff online
competition and high delivery charges to Jersey. ‘You have to work really hard
to stay ahead,’ she says.
Rogers has always worked in children’s clothing and equipment but
wanted her own store – which she opened two years ago – so that she could
order what she knew her customers wanted without the decision having to go
up the line. ‘Having my own shop means I can listen to my customers,
understand their lifestyles and then provide the service I know they want.’
Running an independent shop is about a lot more than just standing in
your shop selling stuff, says Rogers. ‘It’s about investing in your customers
long-term, sharing your knowledge, advising them, letting them ask
questions and see and touch the products, chatting to them, gaining their
trust, allowing them to go home and have a think before they buy.’
All the experiences you can’t get from online shopping, in other words.
The staff at Jacks, many who have been there since the beginning, agree:
friendliness and a warm welcome are everything – and it’s precisely these
qualities that Jacks is known for and what keeps their customers coming back.
‘As long as we give that extra service and are fair with prices, people are
happy to support their local independent shops,’ says Rogers.
Despite the hard work, Jersey independents want to be where they are and
want to serve the community. ‘As soon as I got my own shop I saw the
opportunity to bring different brands to the island that weren’t here before,’
says Rogers. ‘It’s great that there are shops that are a bit different and we all
want to keep going and improve what’s available on the island.’
