From the President SHEFALI , President 2022-23 The second edition of our annual magazine सद्भा वना is here. It will always have a special place in my heart just like this society. From contributing to the first edition as the editor to contributing to the second edition as the president of this prestigious society, it has been a roller coaster ride. The lessons, memories, friends and experiences during the previous three years will stay with me and endure the test of time as I prepare to turn over a new leaf in the coming months. It would be ideal if I use Gurudev Rabindranath Tagore's words to summarize my voyage and I quote “I slept and dreamt that life was joy. I awoke and saw that life was service. I acted and behold, service was joy.” This publication is our earnest attempt to illustrate what the NSS unit of the Dyal Singh College means when we proudly cheer ‘NOT ME BUT YOU’. The theme for this year is Mission LiFE, which translates to "sustainable lifestyle for the environment," The effort that our Indian government initiated served as inspiration for this year’s theme. We had already been working on the same objective at our unit since July 2022, when we launched our first project – Mitra. The very next month, we launched another initiative called Project Shakti pursuing Empowerment. Thus, as one would guess after reading this magazine, our unit's activities include a wide range of arenas. The difference we make in the lives of the people is the real reason to continue noble deeds. It is imperative to mention that the achievements of the unit throughout the year have been laudable, with many more to come. These successes are only a stop along the way, and they are intended to motivate future teams as we continue to change the world together. Additionally, I'd want to thank our principal Dr. VK Paliwal and our programme officer Dr. Jyoti Paul for their unwavering support, inspiration, and encouragement. I also want to congratulate and thank the editors, the design team, and the contributors for their tenacious efforts in bringing out this brilliant piece of work. I hope the readers like it as much as we enjoyed creating it. Happy reading. 5.
From the Vice-President VISHWAS , Vice-President 2022-23 Working with the National Service Scheme (NSS) in college for three years was an extremely contented experience for me. I was reluctant to join at first because I didn't know what to expect, but as soon as I got involved, I realized how much it meant to me and how much it was changing me for the better. It was difficult at times to balance academics and NSS duties, but the satisfaction of helping the community outweighed all of the stress. Seeing the effect of our efforts on the community brought me great joy and fulfillment. Every day was a chance to make a difference in someone's life and contribute to the betterment of society. I grew close to the other NSS members because we all had a similar enthusiasm for giving back to the community and supporting others. It was a warm and inclusive environment, and I experienced mutual support and motivation. Through these connections, I was able to develop personally and learned a great deal about leadership, collaboration, and communication. My tenure with NSS is coming to an end, and I have a sense of nostalgic melancholy. While I will miss the work we accomplished and the people we were able to assist, I am confident that the relationships I made and the lessons I learned will remain with me for the remainder of my life. I am appreciative of the emotional experience NSS has provided me with and for how it has helped me develop into a more compassionate and sympathetic person. 6.
Treasurer Joining NSS was among the top most priority in the beginning of my college journey. I still remember how excited I was for the recruitment process. I am heartily thankful to serve as a treasure for this tenure and secretary for the last tenure. I always endeavour to contribute with the best of my efforts and potential through the opportunities provided by my society. A sense of energy and enthusiasm has always been with me while serving as one of the members of this unit and with the same zeal I am looking forward to all the events which will come in the future. Abhilasha Joint Secretary 'Sukoon' is what NSS means to me. If I would be summing up my college life altogether, most of it would be only about NSS. There was one thing I was sure about after joining college, and that was to be a part of the NSS. And I will be forever grateful for this decision. NSS has turned me into a more dedicated, responsible and confident person. It made me understand the true meaning of kindness, empathy and social service. That feeling, that smile, that satisfaction always motivates me to work even more enthusiastically every single time. Varnika Tyagi Secretary It is a pleasure to serve as Secretary of the NSS, a voluntary program under which many young students work towards creating a campus-community linkage. It led me towards gaining skills in mobilising community participation. This platform helped me in growing individually as well as a team. I have done volunteering for various tasks under NSS activities which allowed me to become confident, develop leadership skills, and learn about different people from different walks of life. OUR PROJECTS PROJECT MITRA PROJECT SHAKTI Logo 9.
PROJECT MITRA The NSS Dyal Singh College, University of Delhi launched its Project Mitra in 2022 which aims at contributing in an all inclusive development of the society. The project is named "Mitra" to display the tender relationship between "friends" i.e. animals, environment and humans, which being a part of the same planet have coexisted for centuries. The emerging crisis calls for evoking this relationship again. The objective of the project is to create a better and safer living scenario for all the existing living forms. 10.
PROJECT SHAKTI Shakti delves deep down in human existence. However in the present scenario, one needs to empower, sensitize and spark that light again in all sexes and genders, especially women and LGBTQ++. Hence, the NSS Unit launched its "Project Shakti". The major aim of the project is the overall empowerment of society, giving special reference to the unprivileged sections. 11.

Talking about menstrual health is not something one should be ashamed, rather it is a subject about which every individual should not only be aware of, but also understand the nature of the process. During the process of menstruation a female body is not the only one which has to go through changes but the environment also has to face the consequences because of the menstrual waste generated. Nature and humans are strongly intertwined to each other in many aspects and the impacts of one’s actions are unavoidable. Menstruation is a sensitive topic in India, and many people avoid discussing it because they believe it will cause others to judge them. It is explained to the girls that it is a normal occurrence and that discussing it in public is frowned upon. But people don't realize that someone has to speak up about it so that everyone can learn about the effects it has on female health and the environment. India has around millions of females who are menstruating every month. Most of the women use sanitary napkins, tampons during their periods as they are the most easily accessible, affordable and most advertised menstrual products. But the fact that they have adverse outcomes on environment and the female body is overlooked. And one of the main reason for this is the lack of awareness regarding this issue. E S S Y A SUSTAINABLE MENSTRUAL HYGIENE By Kritika Pant 24.
The topic periods is stigmatized, making it difficult for females to discuss their problems. Terms like “female problem’, “that time of the month” etc. are given to periods to avoid the term itself. The country faces the problem of dumping such large amounts of menstrual waste as it is non-biodegradable, which has negative effects on the environment. These solid wastes have a higher percentage of plastic in them. Due to the accumulation of such plastics, they get piled up at the dumpsites and most of the waste is left behind by the waste pickers which gets scattered on the streets exposing people to different kinds of disease. The toxins released from the pads and tampons can cause soil pollution leading to infertility of the soil. The severe effects on the female body due to the usage of such hazardous products like rashes, vaginal allergies, ovarian cancer, infertility, hormonal misbalance etc. happen due to the products like pesticides, artificial perfumes and chemicals to bleach pads called dioxin. Such adverse impacts can be minimalized if some sustainable alternatives are taken into practice. These alternatives would be beneficial for the health of female individuals as well as the environment. Instead of pads and tampons, menstrual cups are nowadays coming into light. Made of silicone, these are reusable and can be used for 10 to 12 years. Reusable pads which are thin and flexible and can last up to 3 years are also a good alternative. Period underwear, reusable cloth pads, menstrual discs are some other options that deserve more attention. These eco-friendly alternatives would aid in reducing the waste generated by menstrual products as well as in protecting females from potential health issues. 25.
Such alternatives can be pursued only when people would understand that it is necessary to emerge from the cocoon of “shame” and be vocal about this issue as the effects can be severe for all due to the impact it shows on the environment. Thus, it is critical to implement long-term menstrual hygiene measures, as well as raising awareness about the issue. Along with the assistance of the government, and NGOs each individual can come forward for this purpose which would be helpful for the society. 26.
PEN DRIVE NARRATES ITS TALE “Here sir, this is the best model for you with 512GB storage, 440MB/s data transferring speed , Avenger body design with 5 years of warranty.” “Did you hear that Avenger, there’s someone looking for you!” “Of course I did little bunny. Isn’t that customary everywhere for you and your boys who just stand deserted inside your packets in the seminar of my lauding, doing nothing, ha-ha-ha..........hmm.....Seems this guy has loads of tasks for me. It’ll be such a sport! Well I’ll miss you oldies but I’m sure you’ll get into business pretty soon, ha-ha-ha” “Okay sir............... Chotu, dust off the 2GB bunny pen drives and pack 10 of them and also bring those white ear pods to oblige the customer.” “wo-ho, Well thank you Mr. young and popular Avenger for your assurance . Your wish gets heard too soon, you really are something. I’ll miss you too, keep assuring my brothers, b-byee. This is exactly how I got into business 7 years ago when a lush new chapter of my life began, a 2GBbunny design USB drive with average speed but a very long life. Having rough and tough body and zero maintenance cost I placidly fit in the budget of my master, who was an Ad Hoc research vlogger. The early months were hectic for him to acquaint himself with my mechanism and he was really pokey to grasp. Often he forgot to save his data and I had to auto save for him, he misplaced me, mishandled me, and left me open to viruses. Eh.. Initially I wished that Mr. avenger were bought instead. This man would have surely dismantled him within a month. As the time passed he got advance in technicality and dealt better with me. But a lot yet undiscovered about my repairing and updating he went on to load me. I’m known for a life span upto 15 years if used wisely and professionally but may fate in untrained hands worned me out within 6 years and along with the regular waste I was thrown into my master’s dustbin, further handed over to the collection man who then brought me to my new home. Its been an year since I’m lying here dumped in a heap of perpetual heterogeneous garbage. I’m alive! I shout, still capable of labouring but my master has appointed another one whom he burdens until burst. By Astha John E S Y S A 27.
There are lots of smart devices here with me who are very knowledgeable as well! “You have gold... and silver. And this is Mr. television, Mr. toaster, Miss battery, Mr. computers, Mr. fridge, Miss CD, Mr. radio and their relatives. He-he.” We’re all dying. Don’t you know your personality; you, me and all others here are e-waste. We do not belong here. We are supposed to be segregated, dismantled, and recycled. And many gadgets like you can be easily repaired and reused. The metals never die! But animals, people, soil, do get poisoned, genetic disorders and suffering. The entire ecosystem gets affected when we’re left unattended for years under direct sunlight, rain, and wind, or when thrown into water or buried in soil due to release of our chemicals and metals which do not befriend the environment.” Here in the crowd I find lots like me who were done away with when they got corrupt because their masters did not bother to repair them. “What’s your name? Let me guess bunny pen drive” When I asked her that how she knew so much, I was amazed at her reply! She said that she had been recycled twice and was lucky enough to play multiple roles. Now another one she looks forward to play, above all mine she prefers which fascinates her a lot. But the wait is unprecedent and endless for someone to segregate right from the owners for the journey of recycling. She told me how her friends were eaten up or blasted while waiting for someone causing deaths, diseases and pain which they never intended to. This all rings a bell inside me, once my master fed me with a file over cleaner greener healthier planet through some Rs as one of his research papers. I wish my brilliant master (consumers) were sensitive too, to reuse me or dispose me off as required. Here, again I stand deserted but alive, hoping for someone (companies and state) to assure me again that I’ll get into business pretty soon. 28.
S An economy is a mechanism through which the scarce resources are prioritized and organized for the production of good and services for consumption i.e., careful management of available resources. For the production, various natural resources like wood, coal, oil, etc., are used which is inevitable. But, humans are currently exploiting the environment in such a way that it is becoming irreversible for replenishing the required safe quantity of natural resources used. They are continuously exploiting natural resources at enormous amount and failing to replenish even 1/4th of the amount used. This is resulting to be a serious concern for our planet that our current economic system is undermining our prosperity as it is irrationally destroying the natural foundation of our commercial activity for its sole benefits. This is costing climate change and loss of biodiversity. All of this requires an urgent call for transforming our current economy to “environmental or green economy” for sustainable development so that the current system which is eroding the prosperity of future generations can be tackled ina a rational way. E S A Y Environment and Economy By : Harshita 29.
It aims to make economic development that is harmonious to the mother nature. New era of sustainability, low carbon economy and global energy transformation are considered to be three key factors to produce green economic development. According to Karl Burkart, working on six main sectors which includes sustainable transport, green buildings, renewable energy, water management, land management and waste management can prove to be a wonder in the process of transformation. Transitioning to an inclusive green economy will create huge opportunities for investment and job creation, reduce carbon emissions and pollution, enhance energy and resources efficiency, control climate change and will prevent loss of the biodiversity. To conclude, it is necessary to put light on the fact that our planet does have abundance of natural resources through which millions of coming generations can livetheir life satisfactorily, but what currently is required is vigilant use to those resources and replenishment of the resources which are being used for the upcoming generation. As said by father of Indian nation Mahatma Gandhi - “The world has enough for everyone’s needs, but not everyone’s greed.”. Green economy is the new model of economic development which is structured to replace current exploitative model. This model develops a positive connection between ecology and economics that increases the well being of the planet. 30.
S In 2021, 650 000 [510 000–860 000] people died from HIV-related causes and 1.5 million people acquired HIV. For many of us, getting HIV would be the worst nightmare. Right from checking, being diagnosed and post test results there are many phases of emotional conflicts that one goes through. It is difficult to maintain emotional balance in family as well as at professional places. The first and the foremost fear is of getting abandoned by family and friends. Of late, there has been many misconceptions about HIV. The stigma and discrimination associated with HIV is still heard of. Having HIV doesn't mean having AIDS. With correct medications and healthy lifestyle, one can live with HIV for years without HIV being progressed into AIDS. Casual contact with HIV patient will cause HIV is another misconception. Another prominent belief is that all HIV infected people have very short life span, whereas the fact is that the life time depends upon the immune system. So if an HIV infected person is able to maintain a good and immunity, one can live longer. E S A Y According to WHO,HIV is a major global public health issue, having claimed 40.1 million [33.6–48.6 million] lives so far. HIV- MYTHS, STIGMA, AND COUNSELING 31.
However, HIV is a serious concern and there are some casual beliefs and approaches towards the same. Many still belief that HIV can be cured. The fact, however is that HIV cannot be cured. It needs to be treated. Children can also ber infected with HIV. In all the stages, proper counselling is required. Preventive, pre test counseling, post test counselling, post test negative result counselling and post test positive result counselling are needed to be done.Preventive counselling involves spreading of knowledge about HIV before it has been contracted by an individual so that they become aware of what behavioral changes should to be made in order to prevent contracting HIV. Pre test counselling, Pre test clinic involves a person's consent to get tested for HIV.Testing should be done as per the rules and regulations taking care of not disclosing the test results and avoid any kind of discrimination. Post test counselling is very crucial. While a post test negative counselling gives a feeling of relief, but the possible risks are needed to be told and behavioral changes should be made if required. Post test positive counselling should be started as soon as possible after the results. The patient should be thoroughly explained about HIV and treatment should be started as soon as possible. "Treat All " i.e. all people living with HIV should be given with ART has been advised by WHO. "All" includes all those infected with HIV whether they are children, adolescents, adults and pregnant and breastfeeding women. Every year,1st December is celebrated as Worlds AIDS day to unite and combat HIV. This day reminds us that HIV hasn't gone and there is a need to get united to fight against all the prejudice and educate everyone. At last we must all remember that the lifespan of butterfly is very short, yet it joyfully flies around and makes other happy. It is the happiness that everyone seeks .After all, a short life with happiness joy and satisfaction is far better than a long life span without good deeds joy and satisfaction. 32.
S Y Waste is an unwanted or unusable material. Waste is defined as anything that is discarded after its initial use or that is useless, broken, or ineffective. A by-product, on the other hand, is a joint output with little or no economic value. An invention that increases the value of a waste product above zero can transform it into a byproduct, joint product, or resource.Radioactive waste, hazardous waste, wastewater (including sewage, which contains bodily wastes and surface runoff), and municipal solid waste (home trash/refuse) are all examples. Humans produce more than 2 billion tonnes of trash each year, and this figure is rising. This garbage may take hundreds of years to decompose as it is not biodegradable, and present in enormous quantities. This jeopardises humanity's survival even more WASTE AND CONSUMPTION E S A Consumption is the act of using resources to meet one's immediate needs and desires. Our consumption habits are the primary source of massive amounts of waste. Human consumption habits have shifted dramatically in the last few years because of technological advancements. Nowadays, we require luxury items such as Jacuzzis, planes, yachts, cars, and mansions. But none of us questions whether we really need all these things. Is there anything a man requires that he cannot consume? To be honest, the simple answer is no. 33.
For example, many fashion labels have millions of dollars' worth of clothing stored in their warehouses because no one wants to buy it because it is no longer in style. This is just one example, but there are many more. For instance, does a family of four require more than one or two cars, or why do people live in houses larger than some schools? These are the kinds of questions one should ask when purchasing something. As a result of the demonstration effect, we are currently witnessing a shift in people's consumption patterns. This has primarily impacted the middle classes, who are now attempting to imitate the rich's consumption patterns, which eventually leads to a preference for luxury goods over essential goods. This habit must change or else our resources will be wasted on useless materials that will be discarded in a year or two, adding to the waste on the planet. Consumption habits are viewed as a measure of human and national prosperity. However, this measures has also resulted in an excessive spending habit among us. Rich now wastes billions of dollars on frivolous items. 34.
ENVIRONMENT: CONFLICT AMONG STATES Today, we find ourselves in the midst of an era where humans have reached to a point of technological advancements where we can reach the moons and stars, create food from waste and fight deadly diseases such as COVID 19, yet it is the same era in which World hunger and poverty are still social norms. We have resources, we have knowledge and some great minds at workto make the world a better, more livable place and yet we suffer with regulating balance among world nations. The sword of Damocles that hangs over our heads is climate change. We as species are in danger from catastrophic climate change as a result of the decisions we have made and are still making. Nations have, in the last few decades, acknowledged and made collective efforts to deal with the issues of Environmental degradation, climate change, water conservation, etc. But any crucial goal such as this, does not come easy. The plans to achieve a Sustainable World Economy, has had its own highs and lows, and hasn’t been free from conflicts. Security may be compromised by environmental degradation, conflict, or the destruction of the environment's resources and services as a result of a conflict. By: Divya Ahuja E S A S Y 35.
Conflict has an impact on the environment by causing direct harm, disrupting productive processes, and abusing resources and the environment. On the other hand, ineffective resource management and environmental practices can raise conflict risk and susceptibility. The most severe kind of conflict in either scenario is war. Despite international bans, modern wars have employed defoliant spraying, poison gas, drones, carpet bombing, and firebombing, to name just a few tactics. Their usage and expansion, immediately as well as in the long run, pose a threat to civilian populations. Experts often perceive climate change as a "threat multiplier," a phenomenon that can increase or exacerbate existing drivers of instability and conflict, such as competition for natural resources and ethnic conflicts, rather than as a direct cause of instability and conflict. Organizations such as United Nations Framework Convention for Climate Change are meant to prevent such conflicts and ensure efficiency in the Environmental Action reforms. 36.
S Y Recent years have really been tilted the focus of effective governance towards the domain of Environment as an utmost priority for a country for its development. As Claudine Schneider has stated in The Green Lifestyle Handbook- "A healthy ecology is the basis for a healthy economy" , and for this an effective environmental governance is imperative. Environmental governance in particular is to manage individual behaviour or collective action in pursuance of public environmental goods and related societal outcomes. E S A Environmental guidance By: Asneha Kumari The history of environmental governance initiative at national level in post-independent India started 25 years after, no consideration was given to the environment before the 1970s. The efforts for legislating different environmental laws were made after the historic international convention held in Stockholm 1972, the United Nations (UN) Conference on Human, Environment and Development and this led to the start of environmental governance in the country. The first legislative effort to protect the environment was made by legislating the Water Act to prevent and control water pollution in 1974. The Act provided for the establishment of institutional setup known as Pollution Control Boards both at the Central level and in the states. 37.
Human environment interaction is defined as an interaction between social system and rest of the ecosystem. The type of society strongly influences people attitude towards the nature and therefore its impact on ecosystem. Hence, the kind of society decides that how greener society will be. If we will see the current initiatives taken by the ruling government- From the Namami Gange Programme to arrest pollution and revive river Ganga to the wachh Bharat Abhiyan, the national cleanliness drive- Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi is ensuring that growth and environment go hand in hand. But its execution will never attains its end until and unless every member of society i.e. we people don't take initiative for its fulfilment. As Mohith Agadi had once stated- "Environment is no one’s property to destroy; it’s everyone’s responsibility to protect". Talking about the current and challenging scenario of India – It has been ranked 180th among 180 countries in the Environmental Performance Index (EPI) 2022. The shrinking position is really a major matter of concern for the country's overall development. This shows that the country is lacking in various spheres of effective policies making. But the question is " Is it thegovernment only whom we have to put all the blame of inefficiency? Of course not. Lastly, it must be noted that working alone of the government can never bring environmental governance fruitful. Individuals should know their moral duties towards the environment. For instance under Mission LiFE it is mentioned that almost 75 activities are there which an individual can do at micro level for the environment that can impact the society at macro level. As after all we know that, "Small changes in our attitude can impact the society in big way". 38.
