Discover the Mekong River Route
from Loei to Mukdahan

The Mekong is a trans-boundary river in Southeast
Asia. Originated in the Himalayas from the Tibetan Plateau
in Qinghai province, China. The river runs through China's
Yunnan Province, Myanmar, Laos, Thailand, Cambodia,
and entering into the South China Sea in Vietnam. Its
estimated length is 4,900 kilometers. A length of 2,130
km in China. The Mekong River flows through China called
“Láncāng River” or “Láncāng Jiāng” means "the raging
river" . Moreover, when it flows into Burma and Laos is
called “ Mae Nam Kong” . In Thailand, it is called " Mae
Nam Kong".

The distinctive feature of the Mekong River is a
very steep bluff on both sides, water route which line
curving along the mountain brae. The current flows from
North to South throughout the year. The water level in
the rainy season and dry season are very different. The

speed of the water flow depends on the season. The soil
is sandy in the Mekong River. There are numerous small
and large islands spread throughout the river. In addition,
the Mekong River is one of the three lines that have been
registered as UNESCO World Heritage Site together with
the Yangtze River, and the Salween River in Yunnan
province under the name of " Three Parallel Rivers of
Yunnan Protected Areas" . The area is the one place on
the world with the abundance and biodiversity.

In addition, The Mekong Delta which flows into
the South China Sea, Vietnam has a large triangle delta
and it has been admired by international that has the
extremely and various biodiversity and geology. Besides,
all along the entire route of Mekong River, it also has
thousands species of fish. Especially the Mekong Giant
Catfish, which is found in this river only. Therefore, the
Mekong River is noteworthy river for the world.

For Thailand, the first point of The Mekong River
flows into Thailand is at the Golden Triangle in Amphoe
Chiang Saen. Chiang Rai. This area is known as the point
where the borders of three countries, which are Thailand,
Myanmar, and Laos, meet.

In the Northeastern of Thailand (ISAN) found that
the first district that the Mekong River flowing through is
Chiang Khan District. At the Hueang River estuary flows
converge the Mekong River at Ban Tha Dee Mee,
Phukokngew, Tambon Pak Chom Amphoe Chiang Khan,
Loei Province. The Mekong River has become the
boundaries line between Thailand and Laos in the
Northeastern of Thailand. At present, Chiang Khan is the
greatly popular district for tourism and vacation because

components.

From Chiang Khan, Loei Province, the Mekong

community. Therefore, at present, along Mekong River

stunning of nature. Including arts, cultural, and the way
of life on both sides of the Mekong River that shows the
relationship between the Lao Kingdom of Lan Xang to
Thailand that coexistence in this region as well.

Mekong Riverside provinces are the attraction to
the tourists, which make the cities along the Mekong have
developed into important tourist attractions in the region
and national level as well such as Chiang Khan, Mueang
Nong Khai, Phon Phisai, Mueang Nakhon Phanom, Mueang

Phu Bor Bid

Location: Kud Pong Sub-district, Muang Loei District, Loei Province

Its high and slop mountain, travelers can take the
stairs as the journey up to the mountain peak. From the top
of the mountain, you can view the beautiful scenery from
all direction especially the town in Loei. Tourists can admire
the sunrise and sunset or watch the mist in the rainy
season or winter here. Moreover, at night you can see the
lights from the houses in town. It was very beautiful.

Loei Cultural Centre

Location: within the compound of the Loei Rajabhat University,
Muang Loei District, Loei Province

In the Cultural Center Exhibition building, collecting
and publicizing various aspects of information on Loei such
as religion, traditions and ways of living in the past. ancient
Buddha images made of wood, sandstone, terra- cotta
and silver, as well as, various Phi Ta Khon masks, ancient
utensils and equipment. Besides, there is an exhibition,
displays every aspect of Loei covering its geology, geography,
history, traditions and ethnology.

Huai Nam Man

Location: Kokthong Sub-district, Muang Loei District, Loei Province

Huai Nam Man is a famous morning rafting tourist
attraction to watch the dazzling scenery around the
reservoir at sunrise. Especially during the winter, which
will be able to enjoy the beauty of the mist- covered
across the water surface and eating a delicious fresh fish

Phu Pha Lom Forest Park

Location: Nam Suai Sub-district, Muang Loei District, Loei Province

The villagers are also called Guan Pha Lom; it is
comprised of steep limestone mountains with various
pointed summits similar to a wall surrounding the virgin
forest in the middle. There are various kinds of plants, herbs,
sightseeing points, and caves, as well as, Bo Nam Sap or
Nam Phut, which is a sacred seepage pond located in the
middle of the forest. It is believed to be a Naga hole, a
water passage of Naga leading to the Mekong River.

Ban Na-O Culture Village

Location: Na-O Sub-district, Muang Loei District, Loei Province

Ban Na- o regarded as the cultural village with a
history of more than 450- year- old. Former Na- o people
have blood of Lao ethic descent " Tai Lü" , immigrated
from Luang Prabang and Vientiane and settled in Thailand
in B.E.2236. Na-O people' characteristics are diligent, patient,
loving their family, recognized to clear the jungle to
create solidarity in the family and love to gather together.

Wijarn Sangkhagit Folk Museum, Wat Sri Chan

Location: Na-O Sub-district, Muang Loei District, Loei Province

The museum is the former cloister of Phra Khru Wijarn
Sangkhagit as an exhibition building, which is a single story
high uplifting wooden building. Inside the exhibition building,
enshrined the statuary of Phra Khru Wijarn Sangkhagit,
eight necessities of a Buddhist monk, ancient Buddha
statues and Palm- leaf scripture. The front area displays
scripture cabinet and watering trough in Naga shape and in
the middle of the trough is carved in Hastilinga shape.
Another part is the central hall, displays local appliances,
ancient money, animals capturing tools, loom and weaving
tools, traditional woven fabric products, and Thai - Loei
Northeastern style music instruments.

Thai Dam Cultural Village

Location: Ban Na Pa Nat, Khao Kaeo Sub-district, Chiang Khan
District, Loei Province

Thai Dam Cultural Village is built for the
dissemination of the interesting cultural heritage of the
Thai Dam community who settled at Ban Na Pa Nat has
been carefully preserved and handed down through
many generations, including culture, tradition and their
traditional lifestyle. Moreover, Ban Na Pa Nat village is the
only village in Loei province where the population of Thai
Dam descent. Thus, this village has become
culturaltourist attraction for more than 100 years.

Phee Kon Nam Cultural Center, Ban Na Sao

Location: Ban Na Sao School, Na Sao Sub-district, Chiang Khan
District, Loei Province

Phee Kon Nam recreation regarded as a unique
cultural tradition of Na Sao people. It is believed that
regularly playing Phee Kon Nam recreation at the 6th
lunar month in which it is believed that will help the
raindrop following the season. Therefore, local people
established Ban Na Sao cultural center to conserve Phee
Kon Nam recreation by located at Ban Na Sao School.

Wat Phu Chang Noi

Location: Ban Chiang Khan, Chiang Khan District, Loei Province

Wat Phu Chang Noi enshrined the large Buddha
at the top of Chang Noi mountain peak, namely “ Phra
Puttasakkayamunee Sri Chiang Khan” which from the point
where the Buddha is enshrined, tourists can see the
scenery of Chiang Khan City and Mekong River clearly.
This scenic point provides travelers to appreciate the
sunrise and sunset and also considered to be another
stunning scenic spot in Chiang Khan District.

opportunity for the community to conveniently interact

traditional lifestyle. In addition, during approximately

Phra Yai Phu Khok Ngio

Location: Ban Tha Di Mi, Pak Tom Sub-district, Chiang Khan
District, Loei Province

Phra Yai Phu Khok Ngio is also called Phra Phuttha
Nawaminthara Mongkhon Lila Thawinakharaphirak. It is a
walking Buddha image in the blessing posture, cast of fiber
and golden resin combined.It is 19 meters high and 7.2 meters
wide at its base. Visitors can admire the beautiful scenery of
the Mekong River together with Hueang River at this place.

Wat Si Khun Muang

Location: Chiang Khan Sub-district, Chiang Khan District, Loei
Province

Wat Si Khun Muang or Wat Yai is dubbed as an
illustrated venue of Lanna and Lan Chang architecture.
The principle Buddha image in the temple is over 300
years old of Buddha Sheltered by Naga Hood (The Buddha
is sitting in the meditation mudra on the intertwined coil
of a Naga used as a throne). There are also many objects
of art such as a carved Buddha image gilded with gold
leaf on black lacquer in the forgiving posture of the Lan
Chang style, a carved wooden sermon pulpit gilded with
gold leaf on black lacquer with a backrest, a scripture
cabinet and palm- leaf scripture, and watering trough
similar to Supannahong boat.

Wat Mahathat

Location: Chiang Khan Sub-district, Chiang Khan District, Loei
Province

Wat Mahathat or Wat Luang Por Yai has been the
office of Chiang Khan Governor for many periods. There are
the throne of the governor and Gong Chai inside, after that,
the governor was relocation the government office and
changed into temple. The temple houses Luang Por Yai, a
large seated wooden attitude of subduing Mara Buddha
image of Lan Chang style along with 9 Blessings Bestowed
Buddha images that is considered to be the town’s most
sacred and to be the spiritual anchor for Chiang Khan people.

Kaeng Khut Khu

Location: Chiang Khan Sub-district, Chiang Khan District, Loei
Province

In the summer, when the water in the Mekong River

Wat Tha Khaek

Wat Tha Khaek is ancient temple, located on the
bank of Mekong River. This temple is opposite “Sanakham”,
Laos. This temple took the architectural design from Wat
Xieng Thong, Luang Prabang, Lao PDR as a prototype. The
highlights of this temple are three old granite stones
Buddha images, and has the Venerable Luangpoo Chob
Tanasamo be the President of Patronage.

Phu Tok

Location: Chiang Khan Sub-district, Chiang Khan District, Loei
Province

Phu Tok is an exclusive viewpoint to see a
beautiful sea of fog covering the mountains at the time

Wat Phra Buddhabat Pooh Kwai Ngen

Location: Ban Pha Baen, Buhom Sub- district, Chiang Khan
District, Loei Province

The attractions in this temple is the Buddha’ s
footprint located on a broken whetstone. The shape is
similar to the real Buddha’s footprint. There is also Phra
Jao Yai Buddha Chaphan Rangse, the giant white Buddha
statue decorated with small pieces of mirrors. The other
attractive landmark in this temple is the statue of Kwai
Ngen at the parking area of the temple.

Siwa Leung Ban Kok Loa Nuea

Location: Buhom Sub-district, Chiang Khan District, Loei
Province

Siwa Leung Ban Kok Loa Nuea is two- stones
resemble to Shivalinga. Local people believed that it is a holy
item, dwelled in this area for a long time. Later, a shrine
was built as a place of worship for Chiang Khan people.

Phu Huay Isan

Location: Ban Muang Sub-district, Sangkhom District, Nong Khai
Province

Phu Huay Isan is a superb place to see sunrise and
the sea of fog with Mekong river panorama view in Nong
Khai Province. It has two spots to see viewpoint, both
viewpoint of Ban Muang and Krua Mai Nam have
difference beautiful. The first one is in the area of Ban
Muang, which is highest viewpoint, and the other is in area
of Krua Mai Nam.

Pan Khod San Krai

Location: Ban Muang Sub-district, Sangkhom District, Nong Khai
Province

Pan Khod San Krai was noted that " the Grand
Canyon in the middle of Mekong River" . In the summer,
when the water in the Mekong River reduces, visitors will
see the more than 1,000 pieces of small and large rocky
lines stretch as a barrier for more than 5 kilometers long
running along with the Mekong River. In each hillock will
have thousands of " lemongrass" , thus, the villagers
named after their character as “Pan Khod San Krai”

Namtok Than Thong

Location: Pha Tang Sub-district, Sangkhom District, Nong Khai
Province

The Than Thong waterfall is caused by upstream
flowing through several different layers of rock for more
than 30 meters high and falls down to the Mekong. This
make the stunning cascade with a large pool below for
swimming. This place is an outstanding natural tourist
attraction in Nong Khai Province.

Wat Pha Tak Suea Skywalk

Location: Pha Tang Sub-district, Sangkhom District, Nong Khai
Province

The skywalk is 550 meters high above sea level,
located on the grounds of Wat Pha Tak Suea. Moreover,
there is also dubbed the most stunning Mekong River
viewpoint in the province, especially when the water
down. We will see through the water and it looks clearly
like the Serpent movement which is a miracle of nature.

Tham Din Piang

Location: Pha Tang Sub-district, Sangkhom District, Nong Khai
Province

Tham Din Piang is in Wat Tum Sri Mongkol area.
Some people also called this temple “ Payanak Cave”
from the belief of the Payanak city under the Mekong
River. Inside the cave, it is humid with water flowing pass
all year. There is a big rock intentionally placing in the
middle and many other rocks inside the cave. There is a
section of sandstone curves inside the beautiful cave.

Naga Fireballs Aung Pla Buek Viewpoints

Location: Pha Tang Sub-district, Sangkhom District, Nong Khai
Province

Naga Fireballs Aung Pla Buek Viewpoints is a
natural tourist attraction which consists of island, rocks
and surrounded by mountains. And it is also one of the
point of view of the supreme view of Naga Fireballs.

Wat Hin Mak Peng

Location: Phra Phutthabat Sub-district, Si Chiang Mai District,
Nong Khai Province

Originally, this place was a Dharma practice place
of Luangpu Thet Thetrangsi, a famous meditation master
of Isan, who initiated it as a Dharma practice centre for
Buddhist monks, nuns and pilgrims. After his death, a
Chedi was built to enshrine his remains. The Mekong river
view can also be appreciate from here as one side of the
temple locate on the Thai-Laos border. There is "Hin Mak
Peng" , which represent the three pieces of rocks that
lined up along the river in front of the temple, which is
like an old-fashioned pendulum weighing gold.

Wat Aranya Banphot

Location: Ban Mo Sub-district, Si Chiang Mai District, Nong Khai
Province

Wat Aranya Banphot has Relics of Buddha are
enshrined in this chedi which also serves as a museum.
The chedi was constructed by the Electricity Generating
Authority of Thailand as a tribute to Luangpu Rian
Woralapho, a famous meditation master. The temple is
tranquil and surrounded by the unique architecture

Wang Nam Mok Cultural Village

Phra Phutthabat Woen Kum

The Woen Kum Buddha’s footprint located at Wat
Phra Phutthabat Woen Kum. The temple has a belief
about the Nagas (mythical water serpents) who is guarding
Buddha's footprint on both sides of the river and all over

Si Chiang Mai District is located opposite of the
Vientiane city, Lao PDR only separated by the Mekong

Luang Pho Phra Chao Ong Tue, Wat Si Chomphu

Location: Nam Mong Sub-district, Tha Bo District, Nong Khai
Province

Luang Pho Phra Chao Ong Tue was installed in the
area of Wat Si Chomphu, This Buddha image was made
from bronze by the royal artist of the old Lan Chang
Empire in the north with a graceful features; 4 meter-high
image is sitting cross- legged in the attitude of subduing
Mara with a lap width of 3. 29 meter. The holy image is
widely respected from villagers on both side of Mekong
River.

Phrathat Bang Phun is located at Wat Phrathat
Bang Phun, is ancient pagoda which inside there is the

Luangpho Phra Sai, Wat Pho Chai

Location: Wat Pho Chai, Muang Nong Khai District, Nong Khai
Province

Wat Pho Chai is where Luangpho Phra Sai, a sacred
Buddha image of the town which is respected by the people
of Nong Khai, is situated. This Buddha image sits cross-
legged, which was cast from bright yellow gold in the
posture of subduing Mara, has graceful features. Every year
on the full moon day in the seventh lunar month, the
people of Nong Khai always will hold a rocket merit-making
fair or Bun Bang Fai to worship Phra Sai at Wat Pho Chai.

Phra That Nong Khai - the sunken pagoda

Location: Muang Nong Khai District, Nong Khai Province

Phra That Nong Khai ( or Phra That Klang Nam) is
subsequent erosion left the stupa now in the middle of
the river 180 meters from the shore of Thailand. It is only
visible during the dry season and low water levels of the
Mekong River. The reconstruction of Phra That Klang Nam,
Phra That Nong Khai, sits in the riverbank close to its
original location and fill some parts of the original
element inside.

Tha Sadet Market

Location: nearby the Mekong River, Muang Nong Khai District,
Nong Khai Province

The Taa Sadej (or Tha Sadet) Market is where an
extraordinary range of items from ( Indochina and East
Europe) Laos, Vietnam, Thailand, China and even Russia
can be found, located in the town of Nong Khai, nearby
the Mekong River. There are many local products shops
selling electronics, watches, jewelry, silver ornaments,
ceramics, hand- woven cotton and herbs which make
wonderful souvenirs. Furthermore, this is a checkpoint for
local people to cross the border into Laos, while visitors
in general have to go through the Thai - Lao Friendship
Bridge checkpoint.

San Chaomae Song Nang, Wat Hai Sok

Location: Wat Hai Sok, Muang Nong Khai District, Nong Khai
Province

Mekong River Basin people pay respect to the
Gods of water which are “Chaomae Song Nang” or 'Two
Princesses” refer to two Nagas (mythical water serpents).
Every year Nong Khai people performed a ritual to pay
respect to Chaomae Song Nang for water safety, their
successful in business and a safe journey, especially via
boat.

Thai-Lao Friendship Bridge

Location: Muang Nong Khai District, Nong Khai Province

Thai-Lao Friendship Bridge is the first international
bridge spanning the Mekong and it link between Mueang
District, Nong Khai and Tha Duea of the Lao People’ s
Democratic Republic. The bridge was built jointly by the
three governments of Australia, Thailand and Laos. It is
the bridge that strengthens the Thai – Lao relationship on
cultural, economic and social aspects. There is also one
of the most fabulous Mekong River viewpoint.

Prap Ho Monument
Location: Muang Nong Khai District, Nong Khai Province

Prap Ho Monument located in front of the old city
hall. It was built to contain the cremated bones of those
who lost their lives in the suppression of the Ho in 1886
by an order of Luang Prachaksinlapakhom, the suppression
commander, to honor the good deeds of those who
sacrificed their own lives for the nation. There are
inscriptions in Chinese, English, Laotian and Thai on all
four directions of the monument.

Sala Kaew Ku

Location: Wat That Sub- district, Muang Nong Khai District,
Nong Khai Province

Sala Kaew Ku was serves as an open museum of
religious statues was created with an inspiration of
Luangpu Bunluea Surirat who built it around 1978, out of
his own belief that the teachings of all regions could be
mixed together. Therefore, there are various forms of
Buddha images include Hindu gods, Christian religious
icons, as well as character figures from the Ramayana epic
and folk tales.

Wat Luang Pisai Chetiyaram

Location: Wat That Sub-district, Phon Phisai District, Nong Khai
Province

Wat Luang Pisai Chetiyaram has a magnificent
architectural, mural paintings about the Buddha's life. This
temple houses Luang Por Suk and various gorgeous
Buddha images. Moreover, inside the temple provides
museum as a learning resources.

Naga Fireballs Viewpoint at Wat Thai

Location: Wat Thai, Chumphon Sub-district, Phon Phisai District,
Nong Khai Province

Naga Fireballs viewpoint at Wat Thai is the most
fabulous Naga fireballs viewpoint and is not distant from
city. Naga fireballs, also known as bung fai paya nak or
Mekong lights. This viewpoint is opposite Ban Don, Vientiane
city, Lao PDR. Moreover, Wat Thai also has triangular
pillars of underground city and simulated Naga cave.

Phon Phisai Chalerm Raja Cultural Center

Location: Chumphon Sub-district, Phon Phisai District, Nong Khai
Province

The building was located on the old Phon Phisai
District Office, with ancient Colonial construction
architecture which is the combination between Vietnam
and France. And later changed to Phon Phisai Chalerm
Raja Cultural Center in order to provide history, intangible
cultural and local heritage sources for the society.

Peng Jarn Shrine

Location: Ban Peng Jarn, Phon Pang Sub-district, Rattanawapee
District, Nong Khai Province

Inside the Peng Jarn shrine, There is a huge
Buddhist boundary markers ( sema) which is Phon Phisai
people pay respect to and called it “Chao Pho Peng Jarn”.
It is regarded as the one of the oldest Buddhist boundary
markers in Nong Khai Province.

Wat Sawang Arom (Wat Tham Sri Thon)

Location: Pak Khat Sub- district, Pak Khat District, Bueng Kan
Province

Wat Sawang Arom is located on the rock yard at
the foothill, the temple is surrounded by enigmatic
scenery of trees and a small stream nearby. The bell-
shaped main hall stands on the great rock which serves
as a viewpoint for Mekong River and also holds the
Reclining Buddha, the image of the attitude of Nirvana,
underneath. Inside the temple, there is a folklore telling
about Prince Sithon, the son of King Athittayawong of
Panchanakhon, who took a journey in search of Manora
his own wife.

Navel of the Mekong Viewpoint ( Wat Ahong Silawat)

Location: Kaisee Sub- district, Muang Bueng Kan District,
Bueng Kan Province

This viewpoint is situated in front of Wat Ahong
Silawat, is believed to be the deepest part of the river or
the Navel of the Mekong. Beside to the tourist attractions
of Bueng Kan district is also a natural phenomenon occurs
which is the Naga fireballs at the end of the Buddhist
Lent.

Chaomae Song Nang Shrine
Location: Muang Bueng Kan District, Bueng Kan Province

Chaomae Song Nang Shrine is located at Bueng
Kan Hospital. The locals believe that the water deity was
responsible for the annual death cases of the people
living on the banks of the Mekong River. Therefore, they
perform a ritual to pay respect to Chaomae Song Nang
for water safety and it is where local people come to pray
for their success in business and a safe journey, especially
via boat.

Wat Luangpho Phra Yai (Wat Photharam)

Location: Ban Tha Khrai, Muang Bueng Kan District, Bueng Kan
Province

This temple enshrines Luangpho Phra Yai, a
Buddha image in a subduing Mara posture, the lap sitting
on a rectangular platform. People come to pay homage
for their prosperity, career success, wealth, and safety.
The Bueng Kan people organize the celebration of
Luangpho Phra Yai twice a year, which are the third lunar
month merit tradition, called Bun Khao Chi and traditions
of offering Prasat Phueng ( wax castle) and bathing
Luangpho Phra Yai, which will be held in the Songkran
Festival.

Nong Kut Thing

Location: Muang Bueng Kan District, Bueng Kan Province

Nong Kut Thing is a tourist attraction with the area
connected to the Mekong River. It has a various biodiversity
and ranks Thailand’ s 11th wetland of international
importance or Ramsar site. These include more than 250
species of aquatic animals and 20 species of indigenous fish
that cannot be found anywhere else in the world, and
over 40 species of bird. It is a suitable place for relaxing
and appreciating natural atmosphere.

Phu Sing (Hin Sam Wan)
Location: Muang Bueng Kan District, Bueng Kan Province

Hin Sam Wan is another attractive tourist
destination of Phu Sing. Hin Sam Wan cliff which is one of
the most unbelievable series of rock outcroppings,
separated into 3 pieces. When looking from a distance, it
resembles a whale family, consists of a father, a mother
and baby whale which is called by the size of each stone.
