HOLGER KNAACK
RI PRESIDENT 2020-21

JULY 2020
This does not seem like a time for great optimism, but it has to be. Long before Rotary was founded, the world dealt
with great crises that tested humankind's ability to progress and endure. In the age of Rotary, the world has faced
many more catastrophes; however, we have survived, and every step of the way, Rotary has helped the world heal.
Every great challenge is an opportunity for renewal and growth. I revealed the theme of Rotary Opens Opportuni-
ties at the International Assembly in San Diego just as the COVID-19 crisis was beginning, but these are words that
I have believed for many years.
Rotary is not just a club that you join; it is an invitation to endless opportunities. We believe in creating opportuni-
ties for others and for ourselves. We believe that our acts of service, large and small, generate opportunities for
people who need our help, and that Rotary opens opportunities for us to live a richer, more meaningful life, with
friends around the world, based on our core values.
Governments and institutions are gaining a greater appreciation for the types of public health partnerships that are
critical to our work. People stuck at home, eager for greater connections and hungry to help their communities, are
now embracing the values we have promoted since our beginning.
All of this is positive news, but just because there are greater opportunities than ever for Rotary to thrive does not
guarantee that we will succeed. The world is changing rapidly — and was doing so even before this crisis. People
were starting to move away from regular lunch meetings and toward online gatherings. Friendships were being
cultivated and revived in social media relationships even before most of our
meetings moved to Zoom and Skype.
Younger generations have a strong desire to serve — but have questioned whether they could play a meaningful
role in organizations like Rotary or whether they might make a bigger impact forming different types of connec-
tions. Now is the time to put everything on the table, test new approaches, and prepare Rotary for the future.
The COVID-19 crisis has forced all of us to adapt. This is good, and our new Action Plan specifically calls on us to
improve our ability to adapt. But adaptation is not enough. We need to change, and change
dramatically, if we are to face the challenges of this new age and provide the Rotary the world so desperately needs.
This is our great challenge, not just in the next year but into the foreseeable future. It is up to us to remake Rotary
for these new times — to wholeheartedly embrace the ideas, energy, and commitment of young people eager to
find an outlet for idealism. We must become an organization fully enmeshed in the digital age, not one that simply
looks for online ways to keep doing what we have always done.
The world needs Rotary now more than ever.
It is up to us to make sure that Rotary Opens Opportunities for generations to come.

1 (AND THE JOURNEY STARTS..)

Sunday, 28th June 2020 was a red-letter day in the history of
Rotary District 3141 when Rtn. Sunnil Mehra was installed as the
Visionary District Governor 2020-21 on a virtual platform,
witnessed live by over 1000 participants on Zoom and Facebook.
The event commenced with Smart District Governor 2019-20, Rtn.
Harjit Singh Talwar calling the meeting to order and playing of
national anthems of India and Sri Lanka (in honour of the Chief
Guest Past Rotary International President and Incoming Trustee of
The Rotary Foundation, Rtn.K.R.Ravindran.
This was followed by pre-recorded bhajan by incoming District
First Lady Rtn.Shilpi Mehra and lighting of the lamp by Sunnil and
Shilpi with ‘Yeh hausla kaise ruke’ playing in the background and
visuals of the core team members flashing past on the screen.
It truly was a very creative way to begin the auspicious occasion.
DG Harjit Talwar then began with his glimpses of Smart Year – 4750
projects, 86 lakh beneficiaries, 50+ Global Grants, and COVID-19
projects – all together worth over Rs.177.50 crores.
Extremely impactful and making a huge difference to the people
whom we served.
The District added 356 members, taking the total membership to
5841. The highlight of the performance was the TRF contribution
from Dist. 3141 – USD 3.45 mn. – Highest ever by our Dist. 3141
and probably highest by any District in India.
In his inimitable style, Harjit gave full credit to his team and all the
clubs with this shayari…

He then wished incoming DG Sunnil and his team thus.
I am confident that with your meticulous planning, insightful innovative project ideas grit and
determination coupled with your jest for excellence you will surpass all expectations and make this
another special year to cherish, etching another golden chapter in the history of dist 3141.

Incoming DG Sunnil Mehra’s was introduced with a well-made video giving his family background,
education, his profession and very importantly, his innumerous achievements in Rotary. This was
followed by heart-touching messages from Sunnil’s family members, friends and batch-mates, making
him visibly a bit emotional. The ceremony of exchange of collars between the incoming and outgo-
ing Governors was done skillfully with the help of First Ladies Romi and Shilpi.
DG Sunnil thanked everyone for having entrusted the responsibility to lead District 3141 which had a
huge legacy built by so many of his predecessors. He congratulated DG Harjit Singh Talwar for the
excellent work during Smart Rotary Year 2019-20 and requested him to rub a bit of his charm on him.
To express his sense of gratitude towards Harjit and Romi and their great bonding during the year,
Sunnil quoted thus;

Sunnil then reminisced about his journey so far after his nomination as DG 2020-21.. right from the first
meeting where team name was declared as Vision 2020-21 Beyond the Ordinary, his entire team’s enthusi-
asm and energy made him confident, as he felt the richness of their commitments and their zest to execute
the plans.
According to him, Struggle, Strive and Success are the three fundamental realities of life. According to him,
these are not fearful times, but opportunistic times. We need to have faith in ourselves and keep in mind the
larger objective of making a difference in the lives of the communities around us. Try and fail, rather than fail
to try – fear was not real, the only place it exists is in our thoughts. Only those who can risk going far can
know how far they can go. He urged his teams to look beyond the storm as we shall all come out smarter
and truly visionary leaders.
Chief Guest PRIP Rtn.K.R.Ravindran did the honour of releasing July 2020 digital issue of Unicorn GML, Rotary
Dist. 3141 App and the Givers Gain App – unique initiatives launched first-time ever.
RI President Holger Knaack in his pre-recorded message said that Rotary has been through many difficult
times in the past. Each time we have overcome those difficulties. Challenges we face open opportunities for
us to change the way Rotary functions thereby providing a greater impact for those we serve.

By asking you to promote and support our core values viz.
provide service to others, promote business and personal
integrity, promote diversity, develop leadership and promote
fellowship – If you follow the core values the result will be
advancement in world understanding and goodwill.
He emphasized now was the time to change – a time to be
revolutionary. Let’s take this opportunity now to make Rotary
ready for the future. Looking forward to a great year 2020-21.
Messages of best wishes received from RI Director Dr. Bharat
Pandya, RI Director Kamal Sanghavi, TRF Trustee Gulam Vahan-
vaty, DGE Dr.Rajendra Agarwal, DGN Sandip Agarwala, PRID
Ashok Mahajan and several other dignitaries were shared with
the participants.
Chief Guest PRIP K.R.Ravindran was then invited to address the
gathering that began by praising the excellent work done by
outgoing DG Harjit Singh Talwar, defining new bench-marks for
the future leaders of District 3141.
He was very impressed with the range of projects and events
lined up by incoming DG Sunnil Mehra for 2020-21 and com-
mented that his expectations from him have gone up several
notches. He was particularly excited about the Givers Gain
program, which if a success, can be replicated in other Districts
and neighboring countries as well.
Referring to the current pandemic, PRIP Ravindran mentioned
that the world will bounce back to where it was as we humans
have the ability to get over the crisis. Even during these times,
we can continue to be in our business of reaching out to people
– if we make right adjustments to suit the prevailing situation.
Our methodology needs to change – the projects, the process,
the marketing and the communication – all needs to change.
Talking about TRF, he urged each and every Rotarian to
contribute some amount to TRF every year if we have to meet
the ever-increasing demands for Global Grants which enables us
to do good in the world and change lives.
At the end of the excellent Installation Event, a formal Vote of
Thanks was proposed by Dr. Manish Motwani, Chief Coordinator
for Vision Rotary Year 2020-21.

The First Ever Virtual Installation of the District Governor of 3141 is no easy feat.
Normally there is a committee in place which works in tandem with the governors home club, to host this
momentous occasion.
But this time it was to be virtual.
So, everything was to be prerecorded.
The National Anthems.
The introduction of the Core Team.
The introduction of the District Governor.
The introduction by the family and friends.
The Video of the team with the team song.
I had seriously thought that my work had finished with the launch of the District Directory, but I realized that it had
just begun.
So, mom and I sat down to plan the way forward with the help of Meenakshi Khosla aunty.
A group of the core team ladies was made, and they were given instructions for what they were to do.
The Indian National Anthem everyone heard was sung by Lalit Vashishtha (Mumbai Green City), Manoj Kshirsagar
(Mumbai Mahim), Jagruti Parekh and Meenakshi Khosla from (Mumbai Mulund South), with all of them singing
individually and then joined together.
Mom had already planned her surprise video that she was wanting to do.
Then we sent messages to the core teams. They were to make two videos, one sending messages for the year and
in the other they were to just wave their hands
The presidents to were asked to send some action videos. We had to collate all the data under each District
Secretary, the Assistant Governors, Assistant Trainers and the Presidents …a colossal task. 103 Presidents… 36 Core
team…. 27 Assistant Governors… 18 Assistant Trainers.
While all this was going on back end … internet of our building went down.
Though we have two internet connections ones connectivity is there till the hall and the other for all our other
rooms , netflix and automated lights etc… The exercise of making the whole house on two parallel wifi was
undertaken.

We were also contemplating what banner to make as zoom only shows very small surface area and if
one uses the virtual screen, many times portions of the body can get lost in the screen.
During this time the Deonar Installation happened and the thought that was lingering in my mind
surfaced. The correct solution was the Green Sreen. The fabric was procured from President Prabodh …
however to our dismay it wasn’t enough …. Shops were shut… but I remembered mom had a saree the
same colour… so that made up the balance of the screen.
In times of COVID… improvising is the name of the game.
The screen was set, the backdrop made graphically … the planning done…. The videos assembled and
the dry runs done …. everything already…
The plan was that the main laptop would show both mom and dad and then the same laptop would be
moved ahead during the time of dad’s speech .
So, then what can go wrong…… believe me many things can… . Just at the time of the introduction of
dad being played …. The main computer goes dead… why the battery charger pulled out by no other
than dumpling, our little Lhasa Apso … So the same to be restarted and dad to be re-added back to the
group….
All his pages reopened…
Then we realized that in 900 people dad was logged in two computers and they couldn’t locate him to
spotlight him on zoom …. So …. Again, the exercise of logging out and relogging had to be executed …
just moments before his speech ...
However, all is well that ends well… the internet behaved … and all the videos ran perfectly… there was
hardly any lag … the effort payed off in the end ….for the 900 on the zoom and the 1500 on facebook
this was an installation without any glitch and a day to remember

The brand of home radios was founded in 1929 in England by Frank Murphy and E.J. Power. The original
radio company played a crucial role during World War II, making radio sets for British Armed Forces .
“Your wireless set should not be a gadget on which only father can work. It should be something which
can be used and enjoyed by everybody in the family. That is why I make it my business to see that all
Murphy sets are extremely simple to use, cheap to maintain and always reliable,” Frank Murphy said in an
advertisement for the 1931 edition of magazine Modern Home.
Murphy was the first British radio to be fitted with automatic tuning correction with station names on the
tuning scale. Frank Murphy left his own company in 1937 leaving E.J. Power in charge and found another
company called FM Radio – Frank Murphy Radio

Murphy in India
A wooden box, a short, straight antenna on the top left and a picture of a chubby toddler with her finger
placed near his lips with a quizzical smile – this is what Indian radio memories are made of. And the brand
was Murphy Radio, one of the earliest radio brands in Indian homes.
Murphy was known for the radio as much as for the child in India.
The brand entered India around 1948, and was synonymous with the healthy and bonny baby featured in
its ads. It is by far one of the most iconic product logos of the 20th century. One of the most popular
compliments given to beautiful, healthy children was calling them a “Murphy baby”. Calendars and
posters with the child’s face were frequently hung in gynaecologist clinics, maternity homes, and barber
shops.

Radio days
In the 1960s-70s, Indians who had radio sets in their homes often boasted about it. A Murphy Radio set
usually occupied pride of place in their homes, especially in their drawing rooms. It would be kept at a
higher plane away from children’s reach.
Murphy’s famous advertising tagline was sung by Mohammad Rafi: “Murphy ghar ghar ki rounak, tarah
tarah ke Murphy radio, la deten hain ghar mein jaan”.

Sunnil Murphy Baby
Sunil was born in the year 1956 . His parents were the owner of Harichand Compound in Vikroli.
This is where Murphy set up their first factory. They were tenants of sunils father Jagdish Chand Mehra
Sunil was a very cute child with red tomato cheeks and he used to frequently visit his father’s compound
being a precocious 2.5-year-old child.
During this time the owners of Murphy requested if they could have Sunil model for their radio as they
were looking for a child of around 2 years or so as their model.
A photograph of sunil was taken and picture that you see of the murphy baby was actually a sketch
of that picture.
We had a fire in the compound and the original picture was then destroyed but the memories lingered
forever.
Therefore for his special 60th birthday the children procured an antique but working condition Murphy
Radio.. which enjoys a special position among all his prized possessions.

Excerpts from a Chit-Chat, with famed
Philanthropist and Rotarian
Rajashreeji Birla of the Aditya Birla
Group. - Rtn Ashish Vaid.

Could you please let us know what inspires you
to make such huge Donations to TRF?
Let me begin by saying, how proud I am to be a
Rotarian. For nearly two decades now, I have been
and continue to be actively involved with the
Rotary Foundation. I have great faith in their
philosophy of unconditional service, of thinking
beyond themselves, and genuinely making a life
changing difference to tens of thousands of
people across the globe.
I am also struck by their sense of compassion, their
commitment, their dedication and their calling, to
do good for others. Robert Ingersoll, the famed
early 19th Century American writer, averred “We
rise by lifting others”. That is the spirit of the
Rotary Foundation. It is in sync with our way of
life, hence the alignment.

Was there any particular incident that moved you to take a vow to eradicate Polio from this earth?
I wouldn’t ascribe it to any single incident. Fundamentally, the sight of a child crippled by polio despaired me no end. To
my utter grief, I discovered that there were hundreds of children in our country who suffered this affliction. Polio eradi-
cation became a goal and for years was on my radar. Fortunately, Rotary Foundation was already on the polio eradica-
tion trajectory globally. The Government of India, the Ministry of Health, the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation were all
on this track. We are a part of this joint initiative.
Looking at the severity of the disruption caused by Corona virus, what initiatives have been taken by Birla
group to help the community?
COVID has had a devastating effect on mankind. We in the Aditya Birla Group have taken definitive measures with
nearly 3 million touch points.
We started with an Rs.400 crore contributions to PM-CARES fund followed by a 100 bed COVID facility at Seven Hills,
Mumbai in partnership with BMC, managed by Neerja, my daughter-in-law. Additionally 200 beds for COVID patients
across cities.

Rs.50 crore grant to FICCI-Aditya Birla CSR Centre, Rs.50 crore toward supply of 1 million N95 masks, 280,000 personal
protective equipment (PPE), as well as Ventilators. We also commenced production of 1 million triple layer surgical
masks and 1 lakh coverall garments with the support of the Textiles Ministry. Nearly 8 lakh masks were distributed
among the health workers, NGOs and the community.
Two quarantine centres of 30 beds in MP and 100 bedded in Rajasthan have been set up. In addition to this 10-bedded
isolation wards in Maharashtra and 78-bedded isolation wards in Jharkhand were also provisioned. Rural quarantine
centres now across 60 rural locations.
Awareness camps across 1100 villages with a door-to-door campaign to reinforce the COVID prevention message. Our
Group has supplied nearly 2 lakh of sanitizers, soaps and disinfectants across our manufacturing plants, distributed
over a million masks and more than a million meals across 90 manufacturing locations. There is a long road ahead
and our endeavours to stem the COVID tide continue.
What is the most interesting thing you’ve read or seen this week?
The Bhagavad Gita continues to be my ‘North Star’. I listen to inspirational talks on YouTube by various spiritual leaders.
What would you like to be remembered about you?
That is for you to say.
What is one message you would give to the fellow Rotarians?
The philosophy of life, to echo my son Kumar Mangalam should always be “Carpe Diem! Seize the day”.
Do all the good that you can. Have no regrets. Go with the flow.
What would you like to tell your younger self?
Honestly, I don’t think I would have done anything differently. I would have evolved as I have. So the one thought that
comes to the fore is that – it’s all God’s grace and the blessings of our elders, for what I was yesterday and what I am
today.
On a lighter note:
What ridiculous thing has someone tricked you into doing or believing?
Fortunately, I have never faced such a situation as the foundation of all my relationships rests on trust, caring and
mutual respect. So, I never had to accost any trickster.
What do you consider to be the highlight of your life?
To have had the opportunity to be with great personalities who inspired me.
Please tell us an axiom, to live by during this unprecedented time of COVID?
Be positive. This too shall pass. Have faith in God.

Ever heard of “grow old with me there’s a lot more to come yet”. People who are lonely tend to search for
love on every other corner. This is found true in the case of elderly citizens living in old age homes in the
city of Mumbai, who miss their loved ones and can’t be with them only to be resorted to their loneliness.
Bringing smiles to the elderly inmates of these old age homes across the Mumbai District was the sole
purpose of "Baghban, Care for elderly" program organized on 2nd July,2020 by RI District 3141 under the
leadership of District Governor Rtn. Sunnil Mehra.

* (HEART TOUCHING STORIES)

My sister and I had always wanted to
experience the joy of giving as dad
does say a lot of times and I quote,
“We make a living by what we get, but
we make a life by what we give.” So
our very first inspiration was of course
dad.

It had all begun with him and a major
part of what we did is all because of
what he taught to us. In order to give,
it was necessary to have those things
earned and practically we were not
earning. But the idea of donating was
never really out of thought. Little do
we know about the disadvantaged
and needy people’s problems that
they go through, we wish to help
them even more.

As they say, when you really desire something from the
heart and soul, all the universe conspires you to achieve it,
and that’s exactly what happened with us. When we heard
that our residential premises was organising a fun fair, we
took this as a good to earn some money. We were so sure
that the money that we would make, we would spend it on
a social cause, to help people in need, while also having
fun.

So, in the funfair, we decided to put stalls for games such as
Catch a match, Cuppa balloon, Odds and evens & Ring
game. Mom and Dad were throughout there, they made all
the arrangements prior, bought gifts and rewards to be
given. Our friends and visitors made it even more special.
By the end of the day, my sister and I had successfully
earned the handsome sum of money which was Rupees
5500.
It gave us immense pleasure to give this money for charity. We further gave this money to Rotary Club. They
donated this amount in a promising one year education for 5 children. This made us feel great and glorious while
having this undertaken, since it has an influence on social fairness in terms of education. We sincerely hope that
all the students study hard in the good times and grow into useful talents to society.

After doing this, my sister and I have learnt that it really is far better to give than to receive. It makes you feel
good like nothing else can. We think that the very idea comes from the home itself, and we shall totally credit this
to our adorable parents who have embedded those values in us. Thank you Mom & Dad.

At the outset on behalf of the District membership team wish you all a meaningful and productive Rotary year
2020-2021 and Membership month!
We are all in Rotary by choice, experiencing the magic of having a Rotary family, exciting fellowships, extraordi-
nary friendships and making a difference to the world by doing good. From Rotary we have imbibed so many
skills. We must let more of the world experience this unique Rotary life by introducing likeminded friends, neigh-
bours and colleagues into Rotary. This focussed and determined effort can improve quality and quantity of Rotary
membership.
More members will automatically translate into fresh thinking, out of the box ideas for service projects, lowered
average age and club diversity. This will keep Rotary a throbbing and vibrant organization of volunteers. With the
kind of populace that Mumbai offers the opportunity is there for us on a platter!
While internal growth within a club is crucial to keep the club diverse, alive and kicking, the importance of allow-
ing Rotary to permeate different geographical locations in the bustling city of Mumbai is equally vital.
We all know that after the pandemic gets diluted enough, good old days of physical Rotary will be back. Travelling
takes up a lot of energy in Mumbai. Rotary clubs in the sprawling housing complexes that have sprung up all over
the Mumbai forms a great opportunity for Rotary clubs to grow exponentially. New club formation is the way to
go forward and this external growth will help Rotary ramify into more communities to do good.
We have carefully chosen 18 senior new club advisors who are rearing to go and help out with new club
formations.
At the outset Dist. 3141 boasts of multiple, large senior mature clubs who can easily take up the initiative of
giving birth to a new club and nursing them into robust clubs that will make Dist. 3141 proud.
New concept clubs like passport, Satellite and Corporate clubs are new exciting Rotary verticals waiting to be
introduced.
We have an excellent, enthusiastic District membership team with Zonal chairs who are available for all assis-
tance you need for anything in membership. Of course the bottom line remains that we continue to retain
members and recruit quality members who add value rather than just adding numbers for a record!
With the year opening to the glorious tidings of the birth of a new club RC of Mumbai Bravehearts Dist. 3141 is
all set to go forth and multiply Rotary,

A well activated membership club committee with a focussed club membership chair in place can
get every Rotary club started on the journey to find new members

Step 1: Ask members to complete the Identifying Prospective Members Worksheet (given below).
Distribute the worksheet to club members and ask them to complete it. Compile the information
from the worksheets and maintain a master list of prospects.

Step 2: Make an action plan Compile the names that were circled on the worksheets and make a
plan to invite those people to a club meeting, service project, or social event. If you conducted
classification and diversity assessments, refer to the list of groups you found to be underrepresent-
ed in your club. Your plan should specify who you’ll invite, to what, who will invite them, and how
they’ll do so.

Step 3: Invite prospective members to a club event invite the people you identified as qualified
prospective members to attend an upcoming service project or meeting. Or host a special event
where they can meet club members and learn about the club in a casual atmosphere. Make them
feel welcome by having the club president or another leader greet them personally.

Think of your contacts, acquaintances, friends, and family members who might qualify for
membership in your club. It’s not necessary to know whether they are ready to join Rotary. Once
you’ve listed your contacts, circle the names of any you feel would be a good fit for your club.

Membership Growth is always a challenge in Rotary and it is this challenge that motivates me to associate with this
crucial Avenue. Team Zone West is all charged for producing some amazing results this year.
There are 26 Rotary Clubs in Zone West, a perfect blend of old and new clubs. Most of these clubs are very active
having a decent Membership Growth rate. Though our District Goal is 10% for Membership Growth this year, we
expect much better performance in this Zone.
Clubs in our zone are also focusing on forming Corporate Clubs, Satellite Clubs and Passport Clubs. These are new
types of club having some unique features in it.
You can imagine the enthusiasm and the dedication of the team, the year opened with the chartering of the very
first Passport Club of Dist. 3141, The Rotary Club of Mumbai Bravehearts”. Also the first Satellite Club of our District
“Rotary Satellite Club of Mumbai Divas" has been formed in the first week of this Rotary Year.
The success of any organisation largely depends on its membership, We at Team Zone West understands this
completely and will leave no stone unturned in achieving all our Goals for the Membership Growth in the Visionary
Year.
Let's celebrate the Membership month of August by increasing our strength as Rotary opens lots of new opportu-
nities.

Central Zone comprises 26 clubs and 899 Rotarians across Mulund to Mahim including Bandra Kurla complex,
Powai, Chembur and Sion. Clubs size ranges from less than 10 members to 84 members, with about 10 clubs
having more than 40 members.
There has been an anticipated reduction of 4% in membership (1st July 2020 - 899 members (1st July 2019 - 964
members)) primarily due to the consequential impacts of COVID-19 pandemic besides the normal annual churn.
11 clubs had a negative growth last year which offset the positive growth of other 11 clubs, whilst 4 clubs main-
tained status quo on membership.
An important aspect which we would like to highlight is of 2 new clubs which had started in RY 2019-20 with 50
members were reduced to only 20 members by the year end.
As we focus our efforts on our District Vision to have 20 new clubs and 20% membership growth for RY 2020-21,
our primary objective shall to ensure retention of all Rotarians across all existing and new clubs, by the end of
the year.
We urge every Directors Membership to motivate respective Club Rotarians to scout for potential new members
and potential locality within the Central Zone for introducing Rotary. Whilst the world is focusing on “Break the
Chain” of COVID-19, in our Rotary World lets strive to “Build the Chain” of Rotarians. Our endeavor shall be to
empower always on-the-go community with Satellite clubs, corporate clubs and Passport clubs.
Times are definitely testing, and as it is said “When the going gets tough, only the Tough gets going”. Every
challenge has an opportunity within. Truly living and abundance sharing of individual experiences of Rotary and
highlighting the visionary initiatives like Rotary Means Business (RMB), Mobile App with yellow pages, Opportu-
nity Cards whilst emphasizing on Time, Money and Business (TMB) Quotient shall definitely ensure the needed
thrust to our mission.

SoBo the acronym of South Bombay and some more, pretty much sums up the South zone of District 3141.
South zone comprising of Clubs between Colaba and Prabhadevi is one of the most active, vibrant and happen-
ing Zone. It has many first to its credit and many more interesting facts and it is my pleasure to share few of them
with you.
Rotary in Mumbai began 92 years ago in South Zone with the ‘Rotary Club of Bombay’ as the first Rotary club,
now with highest membership of 314.
The South zone has maximum number of AKS members. With this kind of background and great Corporate and
Industrial leaders as its members, it is quite natural that the zone has given maximum leaders to the District i.e. 9
PDGs, Our DG Sunil as also DGE Rajendra Agarwal and DGN Sandeep Agarwalla.
In last about 4 years, the zone has added 2 new clubs. The zone is now poised to add to its family by internal
growth within clubs and external growth by adding new clubs.
Less represented areas such as Lalbaug, Parel, Byculla, Mahalaxmi, Prabhadevi, Agripada and Cuff parade have
been identified for new clubs. Many SoBo clubs have shown active interest in starting new clubs. Six dynamic
“New Club Advisors (NCA)” and VISIONARY club leaders are all set to execute a club each, in the above regions of
SoBo.
In keeping with our prime minister who said “the current adversity should be seen as an opportunity” we adopt
the same principle to add new members. During the long lockdown isolation, many individuals have emerged as
local leaders and enabled support groups to help out the immediate neighbourhood. Rotary can step in to
identify such individuals and take them in its fold.
Additional members bring a range of personal and professional resources and knowledge that can greatly
strengthen club’s ability to serve throughout the community and the world. Membership is our primary resource
that builds and maintains strong and healthy clubs.

The Visionary projects Avenue “Able to Ability” has embarked with a vision to “Empower differently
abled adults and youth through employment opportunities to lead a life with pride and dignity. We
propose to address all the different types of disabilities and get the like-minded NGOs and institu-
tions into a common platform with Rotary District 3141 as the fulcrum and catalyst.
We will tie up with the NGOs who are providing skill development and vocational training for the
differently abled and create a database of people seeking employment. We plan to have a separate
website for this to link the skill sets of people who are looking for job opportunities and corporates
and Rotarians who can provide them employment. We would also be having job fairs and career
development programs.
We need the support of all the clubs and Rotarians to make this dream a reality which is sustainable
and scalable. Our humble request to all Club Presidents to nominate a chairperson for this avenue
and also connect us to the NGOs you are already working with. We also look forward to some finan-
cial support for existing NGOs to further enhance their contribution in this space.
You may get in touch with Project Director Rtn. A. V. Suresh (9821097310, [email protected] ) or
any of the team members of this avenue as per details in the District Directory. We will together live
up to the theme “Rotary Opens Opportunities”

Rotary International
PHroelsgiedreKnnt 2a0a2ck0-t2a1kes over:

Holger says, "Rotary is not just a
club that you join; it is an invitation
to endless opportunities".
He talks about the COVID-19 crisis
that has forced all of us to adapt and
Rotary's new Action Plan that
specifically calls on us to improve
our ability to adapt.

Our challenge, not just in the next year but into the future is up to us to remake Rotary for these new times — to
wholeheartedly embrace the ideas, energy, and commitment of young people eager to find an outlet for ideal-
ism and become an organization fully enmeshed in the digital age.
He says, "The world needs Rotary now more than ever. It is up to us to make sure that Rotary Opens Opportuni-

innovate and stay connected

Rotary’s first-ever virtual convention
attracted more than 60,000 registrants
and 175,000 viewers during its weeklong
program.
The robust participation showed Rotary
members are finding ways to experience
fellowship and fun, key parts of Rotary’s
annual international convention, despite
the COVID-19 pandemic that forced the
cancellation of the in-person convention
planned for Honolulu, Hawaii, USA,.

The first general session was 20 June 2020. Virtual attendees made nearly 19,000 chat comments during the
75-minute session, showing that members used the opportunity to engage and stay connected with each
other.
During the virtual meet, RI President Mark Maloney said, “We had hoped to hold the most environmentally
