Despite its widespread influence on gaming, and current historic appreciation, it didn’t sell as well as Sega had hoped in the USA upon release. Unsold cabinets were factory converted into copies of the title Enduro Racer. The plastic and wood seat found on the non-motorized sit-down version is often damaged or missing. Interest in this game has risen dramatically in the last decade, along with a rise in value. Space Invaders copies and clones exist in endless variations of cabinets, styles, and quality of build. Often these games are found in a cocktail style cabinet, using a PCB of very similar design and functionality to the original. Graphics and sounds can be slightly different, and some may use a color monitor. Space Race was a vastly different gaming concept compared to Pong or the countless Pong clones that had taken over the coin-op industry by 1973. A few early cabinets are housed in an elaborate fiberglass cabinet. The title was not successful for Atari and almost bankrupted the company. Licensed to Midway and released as Asteroid. The PCB does not use a ROM, the onscreen spacecraft sprite was created by a physical arrangement of diodes on the PCB, the first (and maybe only) instance of this technique.

They targeted investors with little or no experience in vending through high interest loans. Leisure Time promised huge profits but produced only overpriced and unpopular game titles for people signing up for their services. Most of the games sold were outdated reissues of Taito space themed shooters, and often they didn’t deliver games at all to investors. Cabinets for these games were made by Centuri (Allied Leisure), although they are not labeled as such. Centuri was owned by the same company that owned Leisure Time Electronics. Both companies would end up suing each other in an apparent ruse to push the blame for the scam on each other. Those who bought into these games were stuck with mounds of debt and unprofitable games.
