Pong might be the most important arcade video game in history thanks to its widespread acceptance from the public. Early versions will have a cut away on the bottom front (which can make the machine somewhat easy to tip over towards the players) variations in the knobs used, and slight differences in the control panel. Monitor is a standard black and white commercial television of the era that was modified internally to accept the video and audio signal from the PCB. It is estimated somewhere between 6,000 and 10,000 Pong machines were manufactured by Atari but most not survive intact past the 1980’s. A Pong sold at the Banning auction in 2021 for over $20,000. The game was heavily copied by countless manufacturers only months after its release. Pong Clones & Copies (Not made or licensed by Atari), 1973-1977 Upright and Cocktail Versions Perhaps no game in video game history has been copied more than Atari’s Pong (Taito’s Space Invaders could also be a contender for this honor). Pong was designed around off the shelf components, making duplication very easy. In addition, since Atari was a new company in 1972, they lacked the ability to ramp up production to meet the needs of overwhelming demand. Distribution loyalties of the vending industry in the 70’s and lax copyright enforcement of early electronic games also helped create a market for countless clones. Pong copies exist in endless variations of cabinets, styles, and quality. Often they are found in a cocktail cabinets, using a PCB of similar design and functionality to the original. Pong clones can be interesting but have little value when compared to the Atari original.
