ii Show Dogs Ireland
C A Reynolds, B.Sc, B.Agr Welcome
Managing Editor It’s the start of another show year? Already? Where does the time go?
Crufts is almost upon us and soon after we start the Irish show season with the back
[email protected] to back International St. Patricks Day and Celtic Winners shows. There has been
a lot of discussion on social media about the cost to enter these, titles available,
74 Sand Road, trying to justify it all. Between the team we would normally have 8-9 dogs entered
Galgorm, at a show. Like everyone else though, we have had to think hard with head and not
Co. Antrim heart as we face into an even busier show year. We have made a decision to leave
BT42 1DL the not-quite-readies or already made up International Champions at home. Total
entered = 2. Sadly the IKC has remained tight-lipped about how or why they insist
+44 28 25651537 on charging the full amount for a Veteran when they can’t compete for a CACIB or
a Veteran Celtic Winner title, or why each day has the same entry fee’s when the
www.showdogsireland.com second day offers Celtic title’s and Crufts qualifications? Perhaps others will have
had similar thinking to us and the lower entries might force a re-think for 2018.
Back to Crufts. It is such a special show. To all those exhibiting we wish you an
enjoyable day in the limelight of the spectators that flood the ringside, and wish you
every success. With the continued success in the UK and Europe of the Irish dogs
we know they are good enough to stand and challenge for top awards. We will of
course be there again ourselves and look forward to hearing of your wins.
The new IKC Judges requirements came into effect on the first of January 2017.
Many of us have attended the various module seminars laid on by the club and
judges committee last year, but there is still a little confusion over who needs to do
what. We are indebted to Eddie Patterson who has clarified this for us in this issues
Advice Corner.
We celebrated our 10th year in Print with a wee party at the stand in November.
Thanks to everyone that came by and thank you for the constructive feedback we
have received. We have a new feature this issue - “What’s in a Name?” giving a little
insight in the Kennel Names we hear and see. But by far the biggest suggestion
from you all was that we should go digital and make our audience global. So we
have listened and made that bold decision to take SDI online with a digital edition
which also means the magazine will now be offered free at all shows. We have
always been about trying to offer exception quality without extortionate prices, so
the good news is that our advertising prices have not changed giving you even
more value for your money, reaching a global audience through our FB page and
Website.
We are offering our magazine free, but we are no throw away publication, so you
will not find us littered around on the off-chance someone will pick it up. It will be
freely available from our stand at all shows.
We are looking forward to getting back out there again with a busy schedule of
shows in the pipeline for the next few months. We look forward to working with you
all again in 2017 and we wish you every success in the coming months.
See you there

Catherine O’Connor
We were very sad to learn of the passing on Sunday 13th November 2016 of
Catherine O’Connor. A much loved friend & exhibitor at the open shows in the
Munster area, Catherine sadly lost her battle with cancer.
Just a week prior she had seen her much-adored Cairn Terrier Baxter win Group
3 at Killarney show, handled by Caroline O’Reilly.
A woman with an amazingly positive outlook on life, she will be missed by those
who knew her.
Her parents made it to Fermoy Open show a couple of weeks later with Baxter,
where Stephen Hourihan said some lovely words of remembrance and a minutes
silence was held as a mark of respect.
Joan Kilpatrick
Joan Kilpatrick sadly passed away quietly on Thursday 15th December 2016.
Together with her husband Billy, under the Sonsirae affix, Joan was a Papillon
exhibitor with experience covering over 60 years. Always open and honest with
her opinions and advice, Joan was a mentor to many new exhibitors in the breed
over the years. She graciously shared her many years of knowledge with anyone
open to it, quite often over a cup of tea at the side of the ring. The door was
always open and the kettle at the ready at their home in Tipperary.
She will be greatly missed by her family and the many, many friends she made
over the years.
Joans passing was marked with a minutes silence at the recent Sullivans Quay
open show, where Donal Neally spoke with fond rememberance of her.

The Curious History of Irish Dogs is the first comprehensive guide to the history
of Irish Dog Breeds. Both authoritative and entertaining, David Blake Knox’s new
book tells the story of the nine native Irish breed of dogs, their interesting and
eclectic origins, and the often unlikely factors that lead to their breeding and ultimate
popularity. This handsome hardback with numerous illustrations is sure to be of great
appeal to dog lovers in Ireland and abroad, but also is fascinating in how it reveals the
social, economic and class concerns that influenced the development and popularity
of particular breeds.
Irish people are huge dog-lovers, we have the highest proportion of dog ownership in
Europe. We treasure them all, from pedigree pooch to mongrel mutt. What is not so
widely known is that we are home to nine native breeds. There are two Irish Hounds
– Irish Wolfhound and Kerry Beagle; three Gundogs – Irish Red and White Setter,
Irish Water Spaniel, Irish Red Setter; and four terriers – Kerry Blue Terrier, Irish
Terrier, Irish Glen of Imaal Terrier and Irish Soft Coated Wheaten Terrier. All nine
are covered in depth in David Blake Knox’s informative and accessible new book.
Alarmingly some of the nine breeds are in jeopardy of disappearing, just like the
Irish Wolfhound which was deemed to have become extinct in the 19th century. It is
down to a wealthy Englishman, who spent decades breeding the modern Wolfhound,
that we have today the animal that is considered to be the quintessential Irish dog.
Another breed with huge international recognition and appeal is the Kerry Blue
Terrier, which is under real threat of extinction. It was a particular favourite of
Michael Collins, who planned to legislate to make it the National Dog of Ireland. He went as far as organising a special
dog-show, entering his dog under the name of Convict 224 – Eamon de Valera’s prison number. The Irish Red Setter,
considered to be the most glamorous of all Ireland’s native breeds, was actually bred out of the Red and White dog. But by
the end of the nineteenth century, it had become much more popular than its relative. Its famous owners have included Tsar
Alexander II, Clark Gable, and Charles Stewart Parnell. Kitty O’Shea claimed she knew Parnell really loved her when he
trusted his dog to her overnight.
The Curious History of Irish Dogs is a treasury of facts, stories and interesting tidbits about all nine breeds, which
comprehensively covers in one book the history and development of Ireland’s native dogs. (Available in all bookshops,
online and from www.newisland.ie RRP €20/£17.99).

Juniors Journal
Hey guys,
Hope you all had a great Christmas and a happy new year. Wishing you all the best
this year.
The Annual Junior Handling Team Event was held at the first of the IKC International
shows, on the 12th of November 2016. There was two judge who were Ms Marie Hamill
and Mr Colm Beattie. There were five teams of three handlers that competed, making
15 handlers in total. In every team, each member was placed into either group 1, group
2 or group 3. Once the Team Event commenced each group was judged by each judge
separately, one group at a time. Each Judge awarded points to every handler and the
teams with the most points won. Once every group was judged, all the teams entered
the best in show ring for the results to be announced. They announced the results in
reverse order starting with 3rd place, then 2nd and lastly the overall winners. Then
each judge picked one handler to compete for the best individual handler. Kellie O
Donoghue and Page Spencer were the chosen two. They both were giving a swapped
dog of a Golden Retriever and were asked to moved and set up their
swapped dogs. They were then given back their own dogs where they did a lap around
the best in show ring, where Kellie O Donoghue was crowned Best Individual Handler
and Page Spencer was Runner Up. It was a great day overall with fantastic
atmosphere with everyone!

As most of you are aware that the Irish Junior Handling Finals was held on Sunday
the 4th of December 2016 in conjunction with the Combined Canine Open Show.
There was 14 qualifiers for the finals. These qualifiers had to have a minimum
of 17 points from championship shows throughout the year.

The 14 qualifiers were:
Anna Briscoe Leah Casey Emma Glynn Kellie O Donoghue
Meabh Briscoe Rebecca Clarke Oisin Mc Donald Orna Mahony
Catherine Broaders Sarah Cushley Ronan McLoughlin
Scarlett Burnside Rebecca Drysdale
Graham McLoughlin
The judge on the day was the respected Mr Michael
Coad. On the morning of the finals we entered the ring
on by one in alphabetical order to be presented with our
qualifying rosette
and picture with the
judge, as we left the
ring we had to choose
our number which was
in a envelope.
Then we were divided into three different groups to
be judged. Each group was then judged separately.
Once all the three group were individually judged,
we entered the ring altogether and the judge then
swapped all the competitors dogs. Once that task
had been completed each handler had twenty
minutes to bond and practice with their swapped
dog. After the twenty minutes had passed each
group then entered the ring once again to be
judged with their swap dog. When everyone had
been examined, all the handlers entered once more
together and set up their swapped dogs and then we
got our own dogs back.
After that, all the handlers entered the best in show
ring where Mr. Coad made his shortlist to the final
four. The final four were Rebecca Clarke, Sarah
Cushley, Oisin McDonald and Scarlett Burnside.
He then placed Rebecca Clarke as Fourth and Oisin
McDonald as Third place. Once they left the ring
the two remaining handlers got another swapped

breed which were dachshunds. Sarah and
Scarlett moved their new dogs for the
judge before getting their own ones back
again. They did one last lap around the
ring where the judge announced Scarlett
as the winner and Sarah as the runner up.
Scarlett will now go forward to represent
Ireland at the International Handling
Finals at Crufts 2017.
Due to be presented at the Celtic Winners
Show, the points trophies go to the handlers who have won the most points in their age
group for that year.
Points are awarded to placings in junior handling at both championship and open
shows.
The number of points awarded at championship shows are as follows:
1st place - 4 points
2nd place - 3 points
3rd place - 2 points
Dublin Dog Show 4th place - 1 point
Judge - Miss Katie Kelly
The points awarded at open shows are:
10-12: Ellen Clarke 1st place - 2 points
13-14: Sarah Cushley 2nd place - 1 point
15-17: Catherine Broaders
Big Congrats to all the Juniors on their wins!
Keep up the great work!

CHAMPION 2016of
Report & Photos
CHAMPIONSC Reynolds
January 7th saw the creme de la creme of Irish Champion
dogs assemble at the Green Isle Hotel, Naas, for the annual
Champion of Champions event hosted by the Dublin
Dog Show Society and generously sponsored by Fosse
Data Ireland, Happy Dog and Show Dogs Ireland. The
Champions taking part had all qualified as winners of a
Champion stakes class at shows throughout the year.
Judge for the evening was international all rounder and
Best in Show judge Mrs Ricky Lochs-Roman from Holland.
A slight change in format meant 2 dogs at time entered the
ring for the prejudging. Once the guests for the evening had
arrived, presentations were made to all the qualifiers by
Chairman Barry Keely and vice-Chairman Chris Hancock.
Ricky was then introduced and went about selecting twelve
finalists before dinner was served. From the 12 finalists a
shortlist of six was made and after another run around for
each she reduced these to just 2.
A final run around and Ricky awarded the top spot to the
Toy Poodle CH GRAYCO POETIC IMAGE handled on
the night by Sally Burns who co-owes Madge with Mary
Coghlan and Lesley Howard. Madge was sent through to
the finals from All Ireland Bulls Breeds show at the end of
October as the Champion Stakes winner under judge Chris
Laverty.
Handing over his crown as last years winners was the
Afghan Hound CH & INT CH DAVASHEY TO TELL THE
TRUTH handled by Mary Mulvaney and co-owned with
Jayne Edwards, Lyn Appleby and John Minchin. Taking
the runner up position this year, Kayto had qualified at The
Celtic Winners show in March under Sean Delmar.
The event was generously sponsored by Fosse Data
Ireland, Happy Dog and Show Dogs Ireland. Happy dog was
represented on the night by Jackie Stubbs and representing
Show Dogs Ireland in the official photo was Sandra Currie
who most of you will know from the stand at all shows.
With the winners announced and offical photos done it
was time to party and it was great to see our the Judge for
the night Ricky enjoying the celebrations and chating with
to exhibitors into the wee small hours.
