the progressing Top 16 dogs, in random order, to return to the
ballroom. These comprised of Alaskan Malamute, Clumber
Spaniel, Staffordshire Terrier, Bouvier Des Flandres, Saluki,
Border Collie, Smooth Fox Terrier, Petit Basset Griffon
Vendeen, Afghan Hound, Lakeland Terrier, Papillon, Basset
Hound, Standard Poodle, Pekingese, Irish Setter and finally the
Pointer. These dogs would next progress to the finals under Mr
Geoff Corish from the UK, which would take place after the
buffet meal had been finished.
With dinner cleared away it was time for the final 16 judging to
begin. This time exhibits were called in in order of the groups
from which they progressed, and would be judged in groups
of 4. From Group A we had the Petit Basset Griffon Vendeen,
Standard Poodle, Saluki and Staffordshire Terrier. From Group
B we had the Pointer, Border Collie, Irish Setter and Afghan
Hound. From Group C were the Pekingese, Papillon, Alaskan
Malamute and Smooth Fox Terrier. While from Group D we
had the Bouvier Des Flandres, Clumber Spaniel, Lakeland
Terrier and Basset Hound. Mr Corish would then judge all 16
dogs before narrowing the field to a Great 8. Unlike the first
round, these 8 did not have to be chosen as a pair from each of
the 4 groups.
Mr Behan again took to the microphone to announce the 8
dogs that would continue in the competition. These were the
Petit Basset Griffon Vendeen, Pointer, Border Collie, Papillon,
Lakeland Terrier, Standard Poodle, Basset Hound and Irish
Setter. Each of the dogs were again asked to move for Mr
Corish so that he could narrow his selection further to a final 4.
The floor was cleared for a final time and the last 4 were called
back to finish proceedings. These were the Border Collie,
Papillon, Standard Poodle and Basset Hound.
Moving them one last time, and happy that he had made his
decision, Mr Corish began by placing in reverse order. In 4th
place was the Basset Hound CH/CIE/GB CH KNOCKOGUE
ARTHURS LEGACY, owned and handled by Barry O’Neill
who had started his day progressing from Group D under John
Walsh. In 3rd place Mr Corish chose the Standard Poodle CH
DINASTII THE LIBERTINE AFTERGLOW, co-owned by
Sean & Sally Burns and Val & Mary Coughlan, and handled on
the night by Sally, who had made his way through from Group
A under Michael Forte.
With only 2 dogs left Mr Corish asked them to move together
and the next rosette he would hand out would be to the winner.
As the Border Collie and Papillon made their way around
the floor Mr Corish extended his arm to a delighted David
Connolly who was handling the Border Collie CH NAHROF
BLURRED LINES AT HUNTLY. Jointly owned by David and
his wife Morag, Ms Roo had begun her day by progressing out
of Group B under Brian O’Hara. They will now go forward to
represent Ireland at the Eukanuba World Challenge which will
take place at the Crufts in2018.
Runner up on the night was the Papillon CH/GER CH
