I am happy to learn that Sainik School, Kodagu is bringing out the annual issue of its magazine
for the year 2015 - 16.

The school magazine is considered to be one of the most reliable reflections of cadet’s
achievements- academic, sports and co-curricular activities. It is an able platform to provide an
opportunity for self-expression and it is a rewarding glimpse of the creativity as well as talent
they possess.

It is a great sense of elation for me to know that Sainik School Kodagu has been striving hard
and leaving no stone unturned for the achievement of its prime objective of making as many
cadets as possible to clear the NDA exam. It is heartening to know that the staff and cadets are
doing a commendable job.

I wish the Principal, Staff and Cadets all the very best for their future endeavours and many
laurels in days ahead.

I extend my warm greetings to Sainik School Kodagu for bringing out the eighth edition of

Principal Speak ....

Dear Readers,

Greetings. In this edition of our journal we have focused on the theme “Love for Learning”.
Learning is a life long process; it begins in the cradle and continues till the grave.

Learning can be fun and instilling a love for learning in children will cause them to enjoy
learning. In the past year, we have made an effort to cause cadets to love learning. Cadets
have enjoyed the process of learning by actively engaging in hands-on activities, investigation,
contemplation and tailor-made programmes by which they imbibed cognitive, psychomotor and
life skills with a view to become officers and gentlemen. Social responsibility, nature preservation,
civic initiatives were some areas where their love for learning was kindled. You will read and see
evidences of some of these in these pages.

A few articles from luminaries in the field are also included for your reading pleasure.

Happy reading.

EV“ ENING EATSEducation is not the filling of a pail, but the lighting of a fire. - W B Yeats Photo : Mrs SVS

Rules and regulations….discipline… were echoing
in my ears…will I enjoy the seven long years ahead….
far away from my home.. What will happen to me? I
am just a lad! These haunting thoughts were chasing
me as I walked with heavy footsteps towards the tea
point. I was badly in need of some amusement. Till now
my whole life had meant enjoyment; whenever I got a
chance to enjoy, I’d make others laugh, I would not let
it go. I saw cadets were now rushing to the snack spot.
The spot was the most visited by all cadets whether he
is sick or upset or unwell. They were ready to conquer
the world of snacks. The house warden was there to supervise. Huge mugs and…small cups filled to
overflowing. Trays laden with snacks were in attendance on the scene. Yes, I do believe in ‘a lot can happen
over a cup of tea’. Some faces were curious, some even resolute. All eyes were set hungrily on the tray..
waiting for their turn! And when the signal was given by the warden, they all hurtled towards the table in
a clockwork precision, claimed their piece of cake and retreated to a far away corner to enjoy the snack at
leisure. Thank you Tea-Point, for giving me such a sight, amusement without tickets.

Dear Abhishek,

Sorry, I never had time after joining
Sainik School to write to you as I am busy
with various activities. However, I couldn’t
stop myself from writing to you about
the enjoyable night out with my parents.
I had a gala time with my parents.

The outpass was issued at 0930 am on
Saturday and we went out for a picnic.
First I visited the nearby Nisargadhama
park and rode on an elephant. I enjoyed
the flowing water, fed the deers with juicy
cucumbers purchased from a nearby
shop. Then we went boating in the fresh
cool water.

We ate some snacks and refreshments from the nearby Ice Cream Parlour. Returning to the town, it
was time to watch Yash’s Movie Titled “Master Piece” . The movie began at 0730 pm and it went on till 11
pm. We had our supper at Kanika International Restaurant. I had a fine sleep, full of dreams in the lodge.

The next morning, I went to a shopping mall and purchased things required for my daily use. I visited
to a cyber cafe and browsed some information on the solar system for FA-4 submission.

Returning to the lodge I packed my bags and with a heavy heart, returned to school.

I saw off my parents saying , “Good bye mama, good bye papa”, I saw tears roll down from my mama’s
eyes.

How about you? I hope you are enjoying your life at the Navodaya School. Are you busy like me? Do
write to me about your good experience in your boarding school Study well and be happy. Awaiting your
reply.

India is rich in biodiversity. Its flora and
fauna is rich, diverse and full of variety.
But as soon as modern equipments were
used nature was affected….. in fact even
tampered brutally by man.

We were fortunate to get an
opportunity to visit the Nagarhole
National Park, a beautiful and rich national
park in Karnataka, still untouched by the
ravages of technology. On the day of our
journey we started in the morning at 5am.
We were very excited to trek for the first
time in our life. The adventure camp was
full of learning when the forest guide, the
revered Ranga Chingappa explained us about the importance of biodiversity and its significance for the
future. He was well versed with the variety of trees and their nomenclature. We were amazed to find
medicinal plants deep in the forest. The guide explained how each aspect of the forest helps in building
the biodiversity of the forest and magnifies its beauty. He enlightened us how the forest preserve the
water table and keep the rivers flowing. The footprints of tiger, deer and leopard struck terror in our
hearts ! Later we came across one of the oldest trees in the jungle. Ranga Chingappa told us to join
hands and hug the tree and take a pledge to save it. Soon we came across the jungle treat i.e., the jungle
safari bus. All were excited to get into the bus. We were able to see wild elephants, tigers, variety of
birds, deer etc., Truly it was all amazing! The adventurous tour was one of the most memorable tours of
my life. It was enriching, full of novel experiences and full of enjoyment.

Orientation Programme Conducted For Teachers at Sainik School Kodagu Courtesy : Internet

A group of 30 teachers of Sainik School participated in the orientation
programme followed by a question and answer session.

Teaching is a social act and learning is an individual act. Learning
should become an enjoyable activity, said Dr NN Prahallada,
Consultant, National Early Literacy Programme of NCERT for Southern
States, Regional Institute of Education, Mysuru. He was speaking while
conducing one-day orientation programme for the teachers of Sainik
School Kodagu at their school campus here recently.

Dr Prahallada said that children who display intellectual and creative
prowess at an early age must be provided with the right support
system to foster them ahead and this is possible only when teachers
are innovative and creative. Students learn in a variety of ways through experience, hands-on activities,
experimentation, reading and reflecting and so on. Learning takes place not only in the classroom alone but
also outside the classroom. So, the blend of both can enrich our learning.

“Teachers can make children reciprocate with their amazing abilities. Teachers being flexible and willing
to think differently can create a win-win situation for children. The prime responsibility of teachers is to learn.
Co-curricular activities need to be given top priority in order to promote leadership qualities in children”.

Dr Prahallada also enlightened teachers to develop a probing mindset among students. “Constructivist
approach to teaching is need of the hour and must be practiced by all teachers. Quality of teaching should
be improved. Democratic atmosphere in classrooms should be provided in order to create a platform for
them to pose questions and interact with the teachers better.”

An excerpt from Sunday Magazine ( The Star of Mysore) dated 14 February 2016.

My Visit to the Lok Sabha

I was jumping for joy all around my house when
I heard the news that my parents had planned to
tour North India. We had planned to visit Raj Ghat,
Taj Mahal, Lotus Temple, Wagha Border in Punjab,
Golden Temple and many other places. We flew
from Mysore on 02 October 2014 and reached Delhi on
the same day. The next day, we got permission to visit
the Lok Sabha. My father had a friend in Delhi who was
a minister, he helped us to get permission.

We entered in after a security check. There were a
few people inside and a guide was also there to help us to explore the place. They would not allow us to carry
our camera. We learnt that there are two sessions held in the parliament every year. There are designated
places reserved for elected members. It was an exhilarating sight to watch the discussion held between
members of Parliment over matters of the country and taking decisions aimed at improving the cause of the
common man. It was indeed a wonderful experience to visit Parliament House at Delhi. If you have any plans
to visit Delhi, do plan to visit the Parliament.

Many like me were entrusted to his hands at the tender age of nine, to

were conceived during the dawn of our nation with a view to marshalling
the immense talent that lay untapped in the rural areas of our
vast country, towards filling up the vacuum that resulted from the
withdrawal of British Officers from the Indian Armed Forces, on gaining
independence. When many an alumni of our school were commissioned
as officers of the Indian Armed Forces, that vision became a reality.
Many a teacher had his role in the fulfilment of this vision, but of all,
Late Mr. Cherian stands out, as he had the greatest role in converting

“ Education is not the filling of a pail, but the lighting of a fire. - W B Yeats

UTILISATION OF TECHNOLOGY IN SCHOOL MANAGEMENT
The functioning of a Sainik School necessitates coordination between various departments, involves
frequent revisits to available data and also exchange of data between various sections. In the absence of
a centralized campus management system / data maintenance-exchange mechanism, the process would
see duplication of efforts causing wastage of quality man hours which could have otherwise been utilised
in productive work. The functions of various departments in a Sainik School can broadly be summarized as
follows:-

Academics Training Management Administration
Syllabus - content / coverage Training Programme Establishment
Question Banks / QP generation Scheduling of activities Record keeping - cadets and
Examinations Results / Feedback Analysis staff
Feedback mechanism Correspondence
Corrective measures Quartermaster Section Admissions of cadets
Procurement Affiliation – CBSE
Accounts Stores Management
Budget preparation Issue of items - cdts and depts Hostel Management
Fee statements Maintenance of Vehicles Maintenance
Collection of Fees Maintenance - buildings / stores Scheduling of activities
Scholarships Services - Barber, Tailor,
Payments and recoveries Laundry
Kitting up of cadets

The activities of various sections are mostly interrelated and require frequent coordination, mostly
necessitating exchange of data. It can be seen that the functioning of almost all the sections involves handling
of certain common data viz the cadets basic particulars such as roll no, name, class, house etc and parents
details in addition to other information that may be shared in procurement, budgeting, administration
etc. However, more often than not, each section maintains a separate database independent from other
sections resulting in duplication of effort. Many times, resources are focused on creation / collection of
certain informatio n without realizing that the data is resident in some file or computer elsewhere in the
organisation. It is also possible that an important update is inadvertently missed out from sharing due to a
plethora of activities.

A well structured network with tailor-made management software to suit specific needs of the organisation
can resolve the resultant duplication of efforts, wastage of resources and ensure effective update/ sharing of
the database. Simply put, the campus management software would deposit any information into a central
database which can be accessed by the stakeholders (academic staff, administrative staff, parents, cadets)
depending on their role.

The factors to be considered in the selection of suitable campus management software are budget (the
features may be compromised based on fund availability), identification of a suitable product / vendor who
can provide sustained services (maintenance of the campus management software is an important area)
and customization to meet the needs of the school.

In today’s world, where technology is advancing at a much faster pace, it is criminal for the stakeholders of
the school to claim ignorance of technology and stay behind. Even in the absence of a campus management
software (considering the cost implication, identification of a suitable product and the time required to
customize the application to suit the needs of the individual school), readily available features in the popular
applications such as Microsoft Office Word, Excel, Access etc (or the equivalent open source applications like
Open Office) can be utilised by staff to make their functioning smoother.

THE KODAGIAN | 27 ANNUAL MAGAZINE 2015-16

A simple option like ‘mail merge’ in MS Word can help in quick generation of bulk reports / correspondence.
MS Excel can be gainfully utilised in manipulation, comparison and analysis of data by the administrative
sections in respect of office records and by academic staff for results analysis.
Maintenance of Question Banks in MS Word and regular updates of by teachers can aid in conduct of
periodic assessments.
A little bit of appreciation of the underlying need for maintenance of databases for longevity, usage by
all stakeholders and sharing it at appropriate levels by effective coordination can reduce the wastage of
resources and quality man hours.

DEEP WATER Photo : Mr Sushanth T Y

I joined Sainik School Kodagu in 2011,
its here that my dreams came true. I had
a dream to swim but didn’t know how to.
I learnt to swim at sainik School and now I love
swimming.

I still recall the first day at the pool. It was
on 18th January 2016. APTC Praveen Kumar,
the swimming instructor asked the cadets who
knew swimming well to fall out. I had a basic
idea but had no practice in deep pools. I was in
a dilemma whether to fall out or not. My mind
tolled me. “You may drown” but my heart said,
“Go forward, you can do it.” I stepped out.

I was given a test whether I could swim in
shallow water or not. To my surprise, I could
do it with just the basics I had learnt earlier.
Nevertheless, my swimming test continued with
a challenge to swim in deep water. I left behind
the fear of drowning and said, ‘ I can do it’. Soon
it was my turn. I tried to swim but was not able to reach other end of the pool, I felt that I was sinking and barely
made it to the other side. Yet I felt proud of my attempt. This was one of the happiest moments in my life. The
determination to swim and fear of sinking taught me how to swim. This experience has given me happiness and
assures me that I can turn all my dreams into reality.

“ Anyone who stops learning is old, whether at twenty or eighty. Anyone who keeps learning stays young. - Photo : Mr Sushanth T Y

Dear Parents......

Just as all the flowers of tomorrow are in
the seeds of today, the foundation for good
personal relationships in life is laid when we are
children. As children grow, they imitate adults.
Therefore, adults have to be role models in
their behaviour. The words that grownups use
in communication are important as they shape
the vocabulary of their growing child.

Encourage politeness of speech and
manners and sow the seeds of courtesy so that
children can reap the harvests of friendships in
life. There are parents who make their children
lie particularly on the phone. For instance a
child may be asked to tell a lie that the parents
are not at home. The parents may see it as a
harmless strategy but children inadvertently
pick up the habit of lying. It is easy to tell a lie but hard to prevent it from becoming a habit. Later the
children may start lying to their own parents.

Adults should inculcate good discipline in their children, once it is instilled, children will learn to resolve
differences in their own way without the intervention of adults. When a child is at fault, however obscure and
silly the reason may be, a word of reassurance from the parents will go a long way in cementing the bond
with trust. The best security blanket a child can have is, parents who respect each other. A loving family is the
primary source of inspiration from where a child draws his/her emotional nourishment.

Some parents make unfavorable comparisons between their children. Constant criticism and ridicule
could make the child lose self confidence. Over cuddling indulgence and pampering by some parents are
considered to be a sign of extreme love to the child. Such children turn out to be highly self centered and
selfish adults. Let no child say to his parents,” You are to be blamed for what I am today. Had you corrected
and guided me when I was young, my life would have been better”. Let every child say with pride,” I am what
I am today because of my parents and teachers”. Let all the parents give their child the warmth of love and
security and they emerge as priceless gem of education imbibing right values.

‘different’ kind of make up.

“All the world’s a stage….” It started with these lines which
depict the seven different stages of our life. I was a bit hesitant
to perform the role but rigorous practice for three weeks bore
fruit. It had started with my previous performance in the play
“This is a Test” in comic role which was well received by all
my friends and teachers. This role too was well acknowledged
with a huge round of applause! I had dressed up differently and Mrs Sreelekha had painted my face

Glass Etching is the process of producing a pattern or design by using acid to eat through the surface of
glass. An ordinary glass canister, tumbler, vase or a plate can be transformed into a beautiful decorative piece
resulting in a frosty elegant texture.

The process is simple but it needs a few precautions. Before we start working, it is better to don rubber
gloves and choose a ventilated area to work in. If you can draw well its a bonus. The following materials are
required for glass etching.
Tools and Materials Required:

Menon House Report

“No one reaches a high position without daring. We gain strength, courage and confidence
through every experience in which you really stop to look at fear in the face”, and that is how we
began another year on our journey to claim the Cock House Trophy. However it is not all about
winning every time; failures only strengthened the bond of unity among all cadets of Menon
House. This lesson of unity proved fruitful in winning many prizes this year.

We began with a strong desire to achieve all the set goals and work towards it with complete
determination. The determination and desire to achieve feats of success bore fruit when Cadet
Akash Nalatwad, Cadet Sujeet, Cadet Zoe Berson, Cadet Prithviraj, Cadet Mahesh and Cadet
Sachin Gumchi secured first positions in the Inter House English Elocution, Hindi Elocution,
Debate, Hindi, Kannada and Kannada Essay Writing Competitions respectively. Coming first
in the Inter House Football and Badminton, we proved our unity and worth on the ground.
Apart from this, our House also secured the second position in the Inter House Cultural, Cross
Country, Kannada Elocution, Hindi Elocution, Basket Ball and Table Tennis Competitions. Our
House won maximum prizes in almost all competitions. The year 2015-16 was a successful one
for us. With determination, courage and will to give our best and face challenges, we are set to
repeat history in the years to come too.

To conclude, I applaud all the cadets of our House for their support and confidence and
working with them was an honour and a great pleasure.

Cadet Sandeep Kumar studying in class XII A is the house captain of Menon House. A keen Sports
man, he actively participates in Hindi Literary activities.

As the curtains come down on yet another academic year, we look back on a year that had
its ups and downs for the cadets of Cariappa House. A whole year, full of activities, gave us
a taste of victory and defeat. Our House cadets have always put our heart and soul into the
competitions and have displayed vigour and sportsmanship. We savoured each victory and
learned lessons from our defeats.

As always the Cock House Trophy adorned the ramparts of Cariappa House as an inspiring
and guiding force to the House cadets. Cadet Adityakumar, Cdt Prajwal, Cdt Yashwanth Gouda
participated in the Sainik School South Zone Quiz Competition and bagged the first prize.
Our house cadets were also the champions of the maiden Badminton Championship. Cadet

the Inter House Volleyball and football Championships. We were Runners-up in the Inter House
Badminton Competition. Cadet Krishna N was adjudged third in the Inter House Cross Country

were instrumental in the realization of our goals and dreams and look forward to a fulfilled and
rewarding new academic year.
