Like, 35 seats/not sure how we saved this place from a wrecking ball/you can hear the person in the front row chew their popcorn tiny. Butit wasthe perfect place to see Barbie with my bestie Jen and 33 other lucky pinkclad women who managed to score spotsto see the summer’ssecond most hyped event (the first being any Taylor Swiftshow, justin case you spentsunny szn on a deserted island in which case, one, welcome back, and two, take me with you next time). Being in the magazine business usually means living with constant spoilers (we’re given early access to just about everything entertainment-wise), but Barbie was cloaked in secrecy. Even when I got the chance to hang with Ariana Greenblatt (who plays sulky daughter Sasha) in the spring, her lips were completely zipped. So, for once, I got to sit back and be surprised by what was on the screen just like everyone else. There were certain things about Barbie I was expecting (the amazing visuals, the fun dance numbers, the witty script, the fabulous performances), but there was something I wasn’t: the sobbing. I am assuming I’m not ruining anything (at this point, you would’ve had to have been on a deserted island *and* under a rock to not know what I’m referencing), but there’s a scene where Barbie-creator Ruth says to Barbie, “Take my hands. Close your eyes. Now feel” as Billie Eilish’s “What Was I Made For?” rolls over a montage of girls at various stages of life just being, well, authentically themselves. Cue the waterworks (and a million TikToks). Reactions to this scene have ranged from “this healed my inner child” to meditations on the spiritual connection among all women through our shared experiences. But mostly they’ve centered on the mythology of girlhood: that seemingly magical time when you can run through a sprinkler with abandon, bond at sleepovers with friends, dance like no one is watching and laugh loudly at whatever you find funny. In short, it’s a time when you can just be you, free from all that future worry of (as Barbie’s Gloria sums up in another epically memorable scene) “be thin/not too thin… be pretty/not too pretty…be a boss/don’t be mean…lead/don’t squash other people’s ideas…never show off…never be rude…never fail…never get out of line.” Between Barbie and Taylor, the nostalgic reverence for early years got a real workout thissummer. And while I am all here for girlhood not only being valued but celebrated, for anyone actually currently experiencing thistime (or deep diving it on a bi-monthly basis as we do in these pages), boiling it all down to good vibes and friendship bracelets dismisses the factthatthere is a twisty duality to *every*time in women’slives—including this one. I could make a list of girlhood gripes aslong as Gloria’s but, frankly, if you’re living it, you know the contradictions(aka the very reason this magazine still exists). Not to be overly dramatic, but there is also a bit of danger in the subtle “it’s all downhill from here”-ness of it all. That the best life has to offer women is this reverse bell curve of being yourself/being someone for everyone else/being yourself again (when you are finally old enough to once again not give a crap). While there’s certainly some truth to that (countless studies have shown the drops in confidence that happen as girls enter their teen years, only to spike back decades later), I don’t think we should be packaging girlhood as our own version of Barbie’s doll world—a blissful land we revisit whenever we need to tap into our true selves. Thinking back now to that montage scene and the flowing tears that filled the theater, maybe the real takeaway of this Taylor/Barbie summer shouldn’t be weeping for what we think we’ve lost, but reminding ourselves that we deserve to be celebrated and validated for being authentically who we are at *all* stages of our lives. Because, just like Barbie found out in that final scene, that doesn’t just make us women, that makes us human.

After her first single “Fictional” went viral on TikTok, the singer-songwriter is finding her truth on her debut EP, The In Between. 10 GL OCTOBER | NOVEMBER 2023 PHOTO: ACACIA EVANS. BY KAYLEIGH ROBERTS ENTERTAINMENT MUSIC Khloe Rose’s life seems almost fictional* *but we swear, it isn’t We need to talk about a painting of Khloe Rose feeding a horse. The artwork in question is hanging in Khloe’s bedroom, which is basically a life-size collage of everything that has shaped her over the years. But nothing—not the glossy Taylor Swift posters or even the ginormous elephant Squishmallow—stands out more than the horse painting. Except maybe the story behind it. “It’s a portrait that was painted by my great-grandmother, and it used to be a portrait of my grandmother. And then she re-painted it to be a portrait of me feeding a horse,” Khloe, 19, explains with a mix of pride and nostalgia. Following the August release of her debut EP The In Between, Khloe’s whole life is having a horse painting kind of moment as she navigates adding a new layer to her own portrait. The Best of Boba Worlds Leading a double life as a musician and also working a low-key job behind the counter at a small boba shop may sound like a Hannah Montana reboot, but it’s Khloe’s everyday. “It’s definitely becoming a little overwhelming,”she says. We can believe it: The demanding schedule of a music career plus another job seems like a feat you’d literally need a Time Turner to pull off. And Khloe’s journey from “normal girl” to “TikTok famous” to “full-fledged popstar” has happened at lightning speed. The In Between, which wasn’t even supposed to exist this summer, came together quickly (and kind of chaotically). “The plan was just to record two songs. Then after ‘Fictional’ came out, everything changed,” Khloe says. She switched directionsto write and record an EP in nine days. Sick and stressing about her vocals, the experience brought Khloe plenty of anxiety and self-doubt, which she eventually learned to overcome. “I wasscared people would think I wasn’t cut outforit.ButIrealized being stressed and crying in frustration over [making music] doesn’t mean I love it any less,” she says. “That’s just part of existing. You can be overwhelmed about something that you’re excited for and that you love.” Starting Over Khloe’s brought that wisdom about confronting tough feelings to her music. For this EP, she pushed herselfto write songs aboutthingsthat made her feel embarrassed or ashamed—especially in “Starting Over,” her favorite song on The In Between, inspired by the insecurity she felt when her friends moved away for college. “I felt ashamed for not being excited all the time about whatthey were doing, because sometimes I just wanted them to be home,” she admits. Khloe lobbied hard to add the track at the last minute because she wanted an “acoustic, autobiographical, lyrically charged moment” to bridge the gap between her current music and what’s coming next. As for exactly what that future entails, Khloe hopes to go on tour but insists there are no solid plans yet. But much like that horse painting, she knows one thing is here to stay: “The only thing I can definitively say, because I know literally nothing else, is that there will be more music.”

30 GL OCTOBER | NOVEMBER 2023 BEAUTY NEWBIE’S GUIDE TO… T H E P E R F E C T V E L C R O LOOK OUT MATILDA DJERF, WE’RE COMING FOR YOUR LOOK. BY ERIN SARGENT Seasons change, skinny jeans come and go, but voluminous locks never go out of style. And if you want a bold, blown-out look that lasts (without dropping big bucks at the salon or using hot tools every day), velcro rollers are your new BFF. “Velcro rollers are great for setting your style,” explains hairstylist Harry Josh. “Since you’re allowing your hair to cool while wrapped around a roller, it’s going to last much longer.” Rollers have been a secret weapon in celeb hairstylists’ kits for years—and now it’s time for your own induction to the Big Hair Club. Bonus? It’s all surprisingly easy. PREP AND PRIME The biggest key to bouncy hair? Start with slightly dirty locks. Your hair’s natural oils plus day two or three grit will help with hold. Want to start fresh after washing? The right products make all the difference, emphasizes hairstylist Phillip Nathaniel: “I love prepping with a volumizing mousse on damp hair for big, fluffy blowouts. Mousse gives your hair that extra oomph it needs to lock in curls, while heat protectant keeps your strands happy.” And when it comes to choosing your rollers, size matters. Basically, the smaller the roller, the tighter the curl, explains Nathaniel. Your pick will depend on your hair length, but for most people, 1 ½- to 2 ½-inch rollers are the sweet spot for voluminous curls.
GL OCTOBER | NOVEMBER 2023 31 WAVE WONDERS CHOOSE YOUR CURL WAVY BABY CURLY GIRLIE worthy of a ’90s supermodel. Different rollers give your hair different looks: These are your best bets for max bounce. GET ROLLING If you’re looking for the bouncy blowout that Djerf is known for, you’ll want to heat up your hair in preparation for your velcro roller. Take a blowout brush (we heart the Drybar The Double Shot Oval Blow-Dryer Brush, $155, drybar. com) or a curling iron and work with 1-inch sections, says Nathaniel. Run the hot barrel brush or iron through each section of hair, starting on the sides as you work your way back and leaving the face-framing pieces on the top of your head for last. Then, follow up immediately with your roller while the section is still hot by pulling the strands taut and placing the roller underneath the hair an inch or two from the bottom. Wrap the ends under and around the roller and roll the rest of the hair around it until you reach your scalp. “Use a setting clip with a flat design to hold the roller without damaging the curl,” advises Josh. When you get to those pieces at the top, roll your hair up and away from your forehead (instead of down and under). This frames your face and gives the top of your hairstyle extra volume. Once you’ve covered your head in rollers, a light coat of hairspray sets the style. Then, as sections cool, your curls will set in that perfect round shape. THE BIG, BOUNCY REVEAL The rollers are ready to come out when all of your hair has cooled— and the longer you wait, the better your curl, says Josh. (Think: 45 minutes to an hour tops as you finish your makeup, pick out your outfit and text your besties.) To remove the rollers, go in the same order you applied them. “Slowly unfurl the roller at the root, then once you are midway through, turn the roller down and gently pull it out,” Josh explains. Don’t be afraid to pull it—the velcro acts as a holder for the curl but also does the work of a brush as you take it down. Once you’ve removed all your rollers, use a wide-tooth comb or your fingers to gently brush out the curls, then finish with one last coat of hairspray. Bouncy, babe! Any girl who’s walked the aisles of Sephora can attest: The options are…overwhelming. So to take out all the guesswork, we’ve rounded up the best new glossy bullets, nourishing oils and nondrying mattes. Your pout game = powered up. Enter: the “lip blush,” a formula with just enough color to enhance your natural lip shade in only one swipe (buh-bye dabbing with a tissue to get that just-bitten vibe). And while lip blushes might not deliver a hefty dose of pigment, they do leave lips feeling as soft and supple as a traditional balm would. Glosses are timeless (and beloved) for many reasons, one being that they make even the driest lips look hydrated and smooth. The downside? How sticky and heavy they can feel. These next-gen glosses don’t have those problems—their featherweight formulas (some even come in sticks!) impart all of the glassy shine sans stickiness. This one’s for the girls who want to make a statement. The reflective finish is great for adding some dimension, making your lips appear bigger. And if you really want to take it to the next level, choose a bold color like a vibrant red or even black (very Wednesday Addams). Crave sheerer color with even more shine? There are so many two-in-ones available now—and with good reason. Not only will you save some dough by buying a product that does double duty on your cheeks and lips, but using the same color for both gives you a trendy monochromatic look. Psst: Euphoria makeup artist and co-founder of Half Magic Beauty Doniella Davy is forecasting brown as fall’s buzziest color. The gummy vitamins of lip looks, tinted lip oils give you something healthy disguised as a treat. These babies pack more moisturizing properties than a gloss and come in a range of pigments from sheer to high impact. That means each time you swipe to re-up your color, you’re giving your lips some muchneeded TLC. What’s not to love? Let’s get real: The mattes of the past were drying and uncomfortable to wear. But trust, these new versions are somehow both comfy *and* surprisingly hydrating. “The creamy consistency allows you to customize your look from sheer to high pigment,” shares Davy. And because of their smoother texture, you can easily layer on another coat later in the day instead of having to scrub off the first one. Sure, liner is nothing new—the trick is how you use it. Line (or overline) your lips, then use the liner to completely fill in your pucker. Want to enhance your shape? Contour with your liner: Pick a shade similar to one you’d use to chisel your cheeks. 34 GL OCTOBER | NOVEMBER 2023 BEAUTY SKIN SKINCARE THE T O O L THE GUA SHA “Gua Sha” is both a technique and a tool derived from traditional Chinese medicine. Gua Sha “promotes lymphatic drainage, which helps to eliminate extra fluid in our skin,” explains medical esthetician Jessica Berto. Translation: Gua Sha boosts circulation and nixes puffiness. Does that lead to a permanently contoured face? Nope, even influencers need a filter for that. But day-to-day depuffing? Count us in. HOW TO USE IT: After cleansing, apply a facial oil or moisturizer. Hold your skin taut and glide the Gua Sha— using upward strokes—across your skin. Start with your forehead and temples, then move to cheekbones and finish along your jaw. Dermatologist Dr. Rina Allawh recommends using two to three times a week. KEEP IN MIND: Avoid massaging too close to your eyes, as “the skin is thinner—and you’re more likely to cause bruising,” cautions Dr. Allawh. Dealing with a bad breakout? Skip the Gua Sha so you don’t spread bacteria and make your acne worse. THE T O O L THE ICE ROLLER Think about every time you’ve soothed swelling with an ice pack. Ice rollers work the same way—with the added circulation-boosting benefits of a traditional facial roller. These reduce redness and inflammation (yes, that includes breakouts) by constricting blood vessels in the skin, explains dermatologist Dr. Hyemin Pomerantz. HOW TO USE IT: Gently roll across your face to wake up your skin. Use upward motions and focus on your cheeks, brow bone and jaw. You can also combat puffy eyes, adds Dr. Allawh. YOUR one are the days of the simple sheet mask (may it hold a special place in our hearts). Instead, thanks to #SkinTok (that’s skincare TikTok, obvi) and viral trends like “glass skin” and the “clean girl aesthetic,” we’re officially obsessed with how we get our glow. Face-sculpting Gua Shas? Cooling ice rollers? Futuristic red lights? Check, check and check. But do these tools actually help…or are they just passing fads that will end up in the back of your bathroom drawer in a few months? Even worse, could these products cause more problems than they claim to solve? We tested them all so you don’t have to. Let’s level up your DIY spa sesh *and* do right by your skin. Mount Lai Amethyst Gua Sha Facial Lifting Tool, $40, mountlai.com Glow Cube Ice Roller, $16, amazon.com BY ERIN SARGENT
GL OCTOBER | NOVEMBER 2023 35 TOOLKIT, KEEP IN MIND: “It’s important to avoid leaving the ice roller on just one area. Cooling the skin too much can cause mild tissue damage,” says Dr. Pomerantz. THE T O O L THE JADE ROLLER Similar to the Gua Sha, this handheld roller helps depuff skin and increase circulation. Plus, it boosts your skin’s ability to absorb serums and moisturizers. Snag a classic in green or change it up with rose quartz or another crystal. We love a double-ended roller (aka one with a smaller roller side) to treat the area around your eyes. HOW TO USE IT: Roll back and forth across your face, focusing on your cheekbones and jaw, explains Berto. Pro tip: Try rolling over a sheet mask for better absorption—and a spa-worthy massage. KEEP IN MIND: Clean your jade roller regularly, like you do your makeup brushes. (You don’t want to wash your face only to use your dirty roller right afterward.) THE T O O L THE FACIAL COOLING WANDS Think of them as the ice roller’s chill cousin. Working on more sensitive parts of your face (like orbital bones and eyelids), facial cooling wands ease red, inflamed skin and tighten pores, explains Dr. Pomerantz. HOW TO USE IT: Berto suggests using these wands toward the end of the day: “They speed up our lymphatic systems the way a cold-water facial cleanse wakes up our skin.” KEEP IN MIND: Since you’ll store most cooling wands in the fridge, not the freezer, you can use them on the thinner skin of your face without stressing about damage. THE T O O L THE RED LIGHT THERAPY WAND/MASK This tool uses the power of light to bust blemish scars and redness. “Red light has the ability to penetrate deeper into the skin than other types of light, which is beneficial for deeper, cystic acne,” reveals Dr. Allawh. HOW TO USE IT: After cleansing and drying, apply a supplemental serum (try The Ordinary Niacinamide 10% + Zinc 1% Oil Control Serum, $6, sephora.com), then glide the wand across every part of your face for three to five minutes. KEEP IN MIND: Though the wand works best for targeting specific areas, if you want to treat your whole face (and multi-task while you do it) a red light mask is just as effective. TOOLKIT, E.l.f. BY L ISA D ESANTIS BEAUTY HAIR We know bangs get a bad rap, but hear us out: The right fringe can be super flattering and offer a fun style shakeup. But before you run to the salon (pls don’t DIY!), you’ll want to pick the right option for your hair texture and face shape. We talked to top hairstylists to find the most fab fringes for fall. Happy snipping! Find your fringe FEATHERED FRINGE WHO THEY’RE FOR: Light, feathered fringe is “great for heart and square face shapes,” says hairstylist MariLynne Cosmillo. The curtain bangs’ cute cousin, these are def a go-to for fine, thin hair but also flatter, wavier hair textures, as the spread-out pieces look surprisingly chic with some bends. HOW TO STYLE ’EM: This is a lived-in look, so you can get away with letting feathered bangs air-dry instead of blowing them out to perfection (use a round brush if you want more polish). Choose an air-dry cream for your texture, then either scrunch or brush it through strands depending on how wavy you want them. SIDE BANGS WHO THEY’RE FOR: Side bangs are the gateway to a more drastic snip, making them a good place to start if you’ve never had fringe before. They’re super versatile and work for pretty much every face shape and hair texture. Plus, they don’t require a ton of maintenance. Win, win, win! HOW TO STYLE ’EM: If you’re growing out any bang type, you can easily part hair to one side and create the look of side bangs like Jenna’s. Most of the time, they’ll look best when hair is straight so that you get a sharp, angled appearance. Use a pintail comb to set them to the side then a frizz-fighting cream or spray to keep them sleek and chic. GL OCTOBER | NOVEMBER 2023 37 BABY BANGS BLUNT BANGS WHO THEY’RE FOR: Perfect for gals with straight or thick hair, “heavy or more blunt bangs look best on oval or more round faces,” says Cosmillo. “They can also help minimize a high forehead.” Just note that blunt bangs are a bit more of a commitment, as they require cutting more hair to achieve that strong, straight line. HOW TO STYLE ’EM: Blow-dry your bangs with a round brush for extra lift and volume. Fringe falling flat from sweat or grease? Do a bang wash: Secure the rest of your hair with a shower cap and just wash your front pieces the same way you normally do your whole head, then dry and style. When done, refresh the rest of your hair with a few spritzes of dry shampoo. WHO THEY’RE FOR: These blunt-cut micro bangs fall above your brows. They’re great for those with curlier hair because coils shrink up when they’re dry, giving you the look of tinier bangs, naturally. HOW TO STYLE ’EM: “Baby bangs grow really fast,” notes hairstylist Fabian Lliguin. They require frequent trims (like, every three to four weeks) to keep them looking sharp, and, well, short. If you have curly strands, encourage your pattern with some curl cream that’ll nix frizz. For a sleeker look, a mini straightener is perfect for ironing out your fun-sized fringe. Not Your Mother’s Curl Talk Defining & Frizz Taming Hair Cream, $9, ulta.com Batiste Original Dry Shampoo, $10, amazon.com Mane by Mane Addicts BRB Ceramic Round Brush, $25, maneaddicts.com CURTAIN BANGS WHO THEY’RE FOR: Curtain bangs are ideal for someone with a round face and just about any hair texture, explains Lliguin. By sweeping the bangs to the sides, away from the face, they create the illusion of a more elongated shape. Plus, as Aveda Institute Dallas educator Todd Faulk notes, “The long layers mean you can still wear your hair back in a ponytail.” HOW TO STYLE ’EM: The best part about curtain bangs? They’re easy to style with some root-lifting mousse and a round brush (grab a curling iron for extra volume). You can also use hot rollers to set your fringe for more of a swoopy style, like Shay’s. 38 GL OCTOBER | NOVEMBER 2023 BEAUTY SPECIAL How Gross IS YOUR BEAUTY ROUTINE? BY E R IN R EI M EL We’re all guilty of at least one or two of these…but we can fix that.
GL OCTOBER | NOVEMBER 2023 39 TONY ANDERSON/GETTY IMAGES. et us let you in on a secret: We all have a little bit of Gross Girl in us, whether we’re popping pimples or sleeping in makeup. While there’s no shame in slip-ups, making a habit of these beauty blunders can lead to breakouts, spreading bacteria or just general ick. We asked experts to rate the mistakes we all make…and help us clean up our act. SKIPPING YOUR POST-WORKOUT SHAMPOO You’ve only got 15 minutes between soccer practice and meeting up with your friends, so a quick rinse-off it is. No time to lather and repeat? Reach for the dry shampoo instead. “Spray sections of hair at the root, then massage it in,” suggests Leo Izquierdo, stylist and co-founder of IGK Hair Care. Just don’t overdo it: Dry shampoo can clog the pores on your scalp, leading to dull locks, so wash your hair with a detoxifying shampoo once a week, says stylist Olya Iudina. SWAPPING BEAUTY PRODUCTS WITH YOUR BESTIE Your lip gloss, shadow palette and fave highlighter all regularly make the rounds because sharing is caring, right? Passing around makeup can spread bacteria and even lead to infections—especially anything that gets close to your eyes, says Maren Jensen, co-founder of Stila and Glow Beauty Fuel. If you need to borrow lipstick or lip balm, swipe away the top layer with a tissue before applying, then wipe again after use. What’s safest to share? “Any product that comes out of a pump or dropper since it hasn’t been touched,” explains makeup artist Pauline Zilch. POPPING YOUR PIMPLES When you see one sprout, your first instinct is to start squeezing. It’s Just. So. Tempting… Bursting blemishes spreads bacteria and causes infections, but it can also do permanent damage (we’re talking scars), warns esthetician Rianna Loving. Can’t resist the urge to purge? “Clean skin before and after, then apply an anti-acne spot treatment to the area with a cotton swab,” says dermatologist Dr. Vivian Chin. If your pimple gets worse, apply a spot treatment and leave it alone. If it doesn’t clear up after a few days, see your dermatologist. NEVER CLEANING YOUR HAIRBRUSH Odds are you haven’t washed your brush, yet you run it through your hair every single day. That residue you see on your hairbrush? It’s made up of styling products, dead skin, dust and more, says Raven Hurtado, stylist at Maxine Salon in Chicago. Yuck. Every few weeks, fill a bowl with warm water and mild soap. Let your brush soak for 10 to 20 minutes, then remove all the debris. JUST USING A WIPE ON YOUR FACE You typically use a makeup wipe before bed or rinse your face with warm water. Only swiping with a wipe? “Makeup, sunscreen, dirt, oil and more can stick to your skin,” says Dr. Chin. Double cleanse for a real clean: First, massage an oil-based cleanser into dry skin to remove makeup and dirt from the day. Rinse that off then, while your face is still wet, follow up with a face wash. Finish with moisturizer. LETTING YOUR PRODUCTS EXPIRE You’ve been using the same palettes and masks for years, and they seem totally fine… Beauty products have expiration dates, just like food. And makeup that’s past its prime doesn’t just dry out and separate—it can also harbor nasty bacteria. “Look for an open jar symbol on the back or bottom of the packaging with the letter M and a number inside” to determine how many months the product is good for after your first use, says Zilch. Not sure when you cracked the container? Ditch the product if you notice a change in the smell or color. SHOWERING EVERY OTHER DAY You are on team “you don’t need to shower every day” but your friends say it’s gross. Who is right? Depends! Did you go for a run? Hop in. Read a book on the couch all day? You’re probably good to go without, advises Dr. Chin. And if you have conditions like atopic dermatitis or eczema, you actually shouldn’t shower every day since it can dry out your skin. So use your judgment. SLEEPING ON THE SAME PILLOWCASE FOR WEEKS (OR EVEN MONTHS) You just lay your head on your pillow all night…how dirty could it possibly get? “Pillowcases get covered in oil, sweat, hair and skin products plus dead skin cells, which cause greasy hair and acne,” warns Hurtado. Wash your pillowcases, washcloths and towels once a week, using hot water and fragrancefree detergent to kill dust mites and avoid potential allergic reactions. APPLYING MAKEUP WITH DIRTY BRUSHES Who has time to wash everything and let it dry before you have to get ready again? Dirty tools can cause dull skin, rashes and acne, says Zilch. So do a deep clean every other week: Swish the head of each one over a bar of brush soap, massaging it before rinsing. “Gently squeeze the water out, then lay them flat to complete drying,” recommends Jensen. You can do the same thing for sponges. DOING DIY MANIS/PEDIS WITH THE SAME CLIPPERS AND FILES YOU’VE HAD IN YOUR BAG FOR YEARS The “my nails are fake but the sarcasm is real” emery board your bestie gave you still cracks you up three years later. A lot of germs live on your hands, especially around your nails, so keep tools clean. “Wipe nail clippers with rubbing alcohol and allow them to air-dry,” says celebrity manicurist Julie Kandalec. As for files? Replace them frequently (you’ll notice the grit wearing away) and never share. FALLING ASLEEP BEFORE BRUSHING Sometimes you’re just so tired that brushing your teeth just feels truly impossible. If dinner leftovers are still hiding between your teeth overnight, bacteria can convert that food into acid, making teeth weaker and more cavity-prone. So do your best to get in a quick brush before bed.

BY KATHE R INE HA M M E R You finally getting up the nerve to tell your crush you’re into them is basically like that moment in a horror movie when you first see the guy with the chainsaw. Terrifying, right? Navigating your first real relationship is full of heart-pounding sitches… like wondering how things are going to be now that you’re a couple, trying to impress their friends and family (and are you even supposed to?!) or figuring out if you’re on the verge of a breakup. If your first romance starts to feel more fright than fab, don’t head for the exit just yet. Turn those jump scares back into happy butterflies when you handle *these* tricky crush sitches with confidence. THE JUMP SCARE: Your crush will get to know you better in a relationship…then won’t like you anymore. Truth: Once you start dating, you open yourself up to the possibility that they could lose feelings for you—or that you’ll lose feelings for them. “Don’t change who you are to keep a person interested,” advises therapist Courtney Conley. “Odds are, they will lose interest again, and you will be forever trying to gain their attention—so let go and find someone who likes you for you.” Thank you, next. THE JUMP SCARE: Now that you’re coupled up, your friends will feel like you’re not there for them as much. You found your dream bae, but could your own nerves be getting in the way? Take back your love story with zero fear. LET’S OVERCOM THESE FIRST RELATIONSHIP JUMP SCARES, SHALL WE? 42 GL OCTOBER | NOVEMBER 2023
C RUSHES E You can’t do everything at once and, tbh, it’s normal to make space in your schedule for your S.O. “It’s easy to get caught up in a new relationship, but you don’t want to drop everything else,” adds Conley. Her recommendation: Instead of overhauling your schedule, try to incorporate your crush into it (maybe you two can study together during lunch so you don’t have to bail on taco night with your bestie again). THE JUMP SCARE: You’re going to get out of the talking stage and have nothing to say to each other. “Even in great relationships, there are going to be boring times,” says therapist Mallory Grimste. “Many people confuse stability and security in a relationship with a lack of chemistry—but it’s usually the opposite.” Your next move? Focus on exciting ways to show up and appreciate each other. Take the leap to resist a routine rut (swap your go-to Netflix night for a pumpkin carving date) or open up about some deeper topics to get their support. THE JUMP SCARE: You have to meet their family, and it’ll be super weird. Despite what you may see on TV or social media, there’s no perfect rule or timeline for how to bring bae into your world. But, to prepare (especially if you’re nervous around new people), talk to your S.O. about what an intro will look like before you actually meet the family. And when you’re ready? Try a lowkey hangout first (grabbing matcha with their big sis is preferable to that 35-person post-Thanksgiving brunch) to ease into it. “Keep in mind that their family members are probably nervous to meet you, too,” says Grimste. Ask questions, be polite and a nice compliment never hurts—but otherwise, know that your bae’s endorsement is probably all their fam needs to heart you, too. THE JUMP SCARE: You’ll be pressured to move too fast into something, like your first kiss or saying “I love you.” When it comes to that kiss: “Being emotionally connected to someone does not require you to be physical with them,” says Conley. Let your S.O. know how you’re feeling and what you’re comfortable with ahead of time. (BTW: It’s totally normal for that to change in either direction as the relationship progresses.) Anyone who cares about you is going to respect your boundaries, simple as that. Take things one step at a time and don’t feel pressured to say or do anything at a certain point. “Have honest discussions about how you’re feeling—it may take some time to get there, but it’s an opportunity to be vulnerable and build trust together,” advises Grimste. And if you’re a bit farther ahead in your feelings than your bae? Be patient. What matters most is that you know you can be genuine about what’s on your mind—and that you’re still there for each other. THE JUMP SCARE: You’re going to have mixed feelings and not be sure whether you should break up. There are a million reasons to get into a relationship…and just as many to end it (besides the obvious—if they make bad decisions or you feel uneasy). If catching up with your S.O. feels more like a to-do than something you *want* to do, you are easily irritated around them or if you’re just feeling like a meh version of yourself, listen to that. Your worries could actually be signs that something’s not totally right, so trust yourself to act. Sometimes ending the ’ship is the bravest move you can make. THE JUMP SCARE: A relationship seems like a lot of work and may not be worth pursuing in the first place. It’s perfectly OK to decide that you’d ratherput your friends/hobbies/schoolwork/self first for the next few years… but there’s also nothing wrong with making space for romance. After all, simply daydreaming about your crush is just a distraction, while being a real couple is an opportunity to grow as a person, develop important communication skills and have fun. It may not last forever, but the lessons learned will. GL OCTOBER | NOVEMBER 2023 43

GL OCTOBER | NOVEMBER 2023 45 C RUSHES RANT RESPONSIBLY After I got ghosted, my besties were there for me as I drafted text after text, complained about my confusion and wondered aloud why I wasn’t worthy. But as time went by, I could tell they were exhausted by the drama and missed the old me. It took me a minute, but I finally realized that I owed it to myself *and* my squad to slow down the venting and get back to my supportive, positive self. What got me there? Writing in my journal and talking to my mom. (If you’re still struggling, a counselor or therapist can also give you a safe space to process.) DISCOVER NEW HOBBIES The constant back-and-forth texting of the “talking stage” usually means you end up neglecting things in the hopes of chatting with your crush. So ask yourself this: If you’d never started talking to that person, what would you have done with that extra time? For me, it was joining the rugby team, something I probably wouldn’t have thought of when I was so focused on checking my phone. Trying something new allowed me to have fun, make new connections and remember there’s a whole lot more to life than some guy who ditched me. START LOOKING FOR YOUR NEXT CRUSH As time passes and you rejoin the land of the living (and crushing), let yourself feel hopeful about your dating future. Just because this connection didn’t work out doesn’t mean the next one won’t. This whole experience was a huge lesson for me on how I deserve to be treated. So hey—maybe this ghost story has a happy ending after all. T They mostly communicate over text or DM. T They never express interest or make plans to hang out in person. T You almost always have to text first (and sometimes double text) to hear from them. T They don’t share a lot about their life and don’t ask you a lot of questions about yours. You talk a lot, but it all feels pretty casual. T They don’t act as close to you in person as they do over text. In fact, your friends would barely guess you two talk daily if you hadn’t mentioned it. T You have a feeling that if you never texted them again, that could end the relationship (or, um, whatever it is). They may be invisible, but look closely: If your latest crush checks two or more of these boxes, you’re in the disappearing danger zone… Boo! You got ghosted. Maybe you had no clue it was happening. Maybe you saw the signs. Or maybe you’re still not even sure if you’ve been ditched and dumped (hi, every girl staring at her phone while left on read). I’ve been there. A couple years ago, I met a guy during the first week of school. He was smart, funny and sweet. Even though we never went on an official date, we would text for hours, which turned into days, which turned into weeks. I got so used to hearing from him that in the little time I wasn’t texting him (or thinking about what clever thing I’d reply next), I’d be daydreaming about the moment he’d ask me to be his girlfriend. Needless to say, I was head over heels for this crush. A month or two passed before it all changed. Slowly, it felt like he was texting less often. I was pretty much always the one to reach out first—and his responses became shorter and shorter. I tried to tell myself that he was just busy with school or friends or sports, but I couldn’t deny that the energy was off. And then, as quickly as he’d appeared in my life, he was gone. He basically stopped replying to any of my messages. And when I saw him in person (we didn’t have many mutual friends or shared classes), he wouldn’t really acknowledge me beyond the occasional one-word answer or nod. A few weeks later, he asked out another girl. It was crystal clear our flirtationship had come to an end. But, despite the fact we never actually dated, the communication cutoff hurt. Being ghosted is awful. And if it happens to you, you’re allowed to feel upset/confused/angry (I sure did). But here’s the thing: While you might feel like doing your own disappearing act from the dating scene, it *is* possible to heal your heart and move on. Time to make that ghost go poof for good… CUT OFF CONTACT You need to make the leap from “maybe they’re busy” to “I’ve been ghosted”—and you can’t do that if you’re still feeling hopeful every time your phone buzzes. The best way to do this? Stop texting. This means no final message to call them out. It might feel good to write out your feels in the moment, but actually pressing send will land you with another unanswered text (ugh) or a reply that will kick-start the ghosting cycle once more. Can’t stop thinking about what you want to say to them? Type it out…then file it away in your Notes app. Sometimes, just getting the words out of your head and onto the screen can help you move past the bad vibes without opening you up to more heartbreak. GIVE YOURSELF CLOSURE The problem with ghosting is that, unlike a breakup, it isn’t a two-way conversation. If you get dumped IRL, you’re usually able to react: You get the chance to ask what went wrong or the opportunity to correct a misunderstanding. But with a ghost, there’s no closure. In my case, I was left wondering where things went wrong…and wishing I could fix it (or just say to his face how I felt). But I knew if I asked for a closure convo, my crush was never going to give it to me. After all, he literally stopped talking to me with zero warning. But here’s the thing: Being left on read is actually all the closure you need. Your crush just made it totally clear that they can’t communicate their feelings—and that’s probably not the kind of person you want to date. CAN YOU SPOT A GHOST?
