The Boys’ Brigade Drill Manual 44 Distinction between No.1 and No.2 The Squad formed in No.1 has the taller Members on the right and the shorter Members on the left, as opposed to No.2, where the taller Members are on both flanks and the shorter Members are in the centre. B. OPEN ORDER and CLOSE ORDER 3. A Squad is always inspected in the Open Order formation. There is a distance of 180 inches between front and rear ranks. Command: “Buka barisan – GERAK” The front rank Members take 2 paces forward (30 inches per pace) and the rear rank Members similar paces back. This is done with the left foot taking 15 inches without bending the left knee and a full pace of 30 inches with the right and 15 inches on the left by lifting the left leg and stamp into place followed by right leg. The centre rank Members stand fast. Arms are not to swing throughout. “Tutup barisan – GERAK” The reverse of the above is done. All paces forward or back will be taken starting with the left foot. On completion, the distance between ranks is once more one arm length or 30 inches. Timing: KIRI KANAN KIRI KANAN Inches: 15” 30” 15” (Halt) Left Right Left – Stamp Right – Stamp (in one count) (in one count) NOTE: If a Squad is in 2 ranks, only the rear rank will act on the command for Open or Close Order. Common faults: a) Bending the left leg. b) Looking down or sideways. c) Swinging the arms.
The Boys’ Brigade Drill Manual 45 C. CHANGING DIRECTION when IN LINE (By forming) A Squad of more than six files, advancing or retiring in line, must do the “Form” in order to change direction and without changing formation. Some Drill terminology: i) Halt to the Halt – Sedia position followed by movement, to Sedia position ii) Halt to the Move – Sedia position followed by movement, to Hentak Kaki iii) Move to the Halt – on the march followed by movement, to Sedia position iv) Move to the Move – on the march followed by movement, to Hentak Kaki v) Pivot – The flank on which a unit wheels when changing direction or forming Squad. It can either be on the directing flank or (temporary directing) outer flank. 4. From the Halt to the Halt Command: “Tukar haluan ke kanan dan berhenti – TUKAR” The right-hand Member (Guide) of the front rank turns to the right. Remainders of the front rank incline to the right. The centre and rear ranks stand fast. The *pivot Members are the right-hand file Members. “Cepat – JALAN” *The three Members of the right-hand file. The *pivot file will act as follows : i) The front rank Member marches forward 3 paces and **halts. ii) The centre rank Member wheels 3 paces into position and **halts 1 pace behind the front rank Member in the new direction by doing 2 right inclines. iii) The rear rank Member wheels 3 paces into position and **halts 1 pace behind the centre rank Member in the same way. The remainder of the front rank will march, by wheeling and **halt into position in line with the Guide (Penanda) at correct intervals, taking the shortest route, i.e. 5 paces, 7 paces, 9 paces etc. **includes a check pace followed by stamping twice in quick time. Changing direction to the left is the same but done in opposite, the Guide being the lefthand Member of the leading rank, and dressing taken from the left once done. NOTE: When the movement is done in slow time, there will not be a check pace prior to Henti. Therefore, the right foot is brought next to the left foot and followed by two quick stamps to completion. The movement should first be taught in slow time.
The Boys’ Brigade Drill Manual 46 5. From the Halt to the Move Command: “Tukar haluan ke kanan – TUKAR” (“dan berhenti” is omitted) “Cepat – JALAN” The Squad acts as above, except that the Members, instead of halting, will first take the required number of paces follow by an instep, which is to bring the right foot next to the left foot and arms returned to the sides followed by mark time (Hentak Kaki). Heads will be turned to the right in dressing on the first stamp until the command “Maju ke hadapan – MAJU” or “Skuad – HENTI” is given, in which case the Members will turn their heads to the front on the first stamp (right or left foot, depending on the command given). NOTE: 1. When changing direction to the right, all except the right-hand file Members turn their heads to the right on the first stamp; when changing direction to the left, all except the left-hand file Members turn their heads turn to the left on the first stamp. 2. When the movement is done in slow time, the right foot will be brought next to the left upon completion of the final odd numbered pace, prior to Hentak Kaki. 6. From the Move to the Halt and Move to the Move To the Left: a) The command is given as the right foot reaches the ground followed by check pace and stamping on the turn, by all Members including the (temporary) Guide. b) The (temporary) Guide turns to the left as in “Ke kiri – PUSING” and marches 3 paces forward. c) The remainder in the front rank inclines to the left as in the “Separuh ke kiri – PUSING” and march into position, taking the shortest route, i.e. 5 paces, 7 paces, 9 paces etc. d) The rest of the Squad Members will act as in the “Ke kiri – PUSING”, i.e. take a check pace with the left feet, then lift the right legs until the thighs are horizontal and stamp to the ground, but without turning their bodies or facing the new direction. They will instead march, by the shortest route, into position as above. e) If the command “dan berhenti” (at the halt) is included, the Squad will halt on completion, taking a check pace with the right foot followed by 2 quick stamps (Refer to No.4 on page 45). If not, the Squad will mark time after bringing the right foot next to the left foot (Refer to No.5 above). To the Right: The command is given as the left foot reaches the ground. The Squad acts as above from a) to d) but in the opposite, and then carry on from e) below:
The Boys’ Brigade Drill Manual 47 e) If the command “dan berhenti” (at the halt) is included, the Squad will halt on completion with 2 quick stamps (LEFT, RIGHT) without the check pace. If not, the Squad will mark time without bringing the left foot next to the right foot. Example: “Tukar haluan ke kanan dan berhenti – TUKAR. Cepat – JALAN” Before During After NOTE: 1. In changing direction to the outer flank, the command “Dari kiri/kanan” will precede (come first) the preliminary command, hence the directing flank being temporarily changed. 2. When changing direction there should not be any missing Member in the leading rank. If there is a blank file without both centre and rear rank Members when retiring, the front rank Member will move two paces forward into the rear rank immediately after turning about, before the Commander gives further commands. 3. In changing direction to the right, dressing will be taken from the right; in changing direction to the left, dressing will be taken from the left. Dressing taken from the temporary directing flank should be done only once. Subsequent dressing should be taken from the original directing flank. 4. When the movement is done from the move to the halt, in slow time, there will not be a check pace prior to Henti. To the left: the right foot is brought next to the left foot and followed by 2 quick stamps to completion. To the right: the left foot is brought next to the right foot and followed by 2 quick stamps to completion. 5. When the movement is done from the move to the move, in slow time, there will not be a check pace prior to marking time. To the left: the right foot is brought next to the left foot and heads turned to the left for dressing on the first stamp. To the right: the left foot is brought next to the right foot and heads turned to the right for dressing on the first stamp.
The Boys’ Brigade Drill Manual 48 D. CHANGING DIRECTION when in COLUMN OF THREES (By wheeling) 7. Command: “Tukar haluan ke kiri / kanan, ke kiri / kanan – BELOK” The command can be given on any pace. Each file, or rank, will wheel successively round the same point. The inner Member (of the pivot rank) will wheel through 90 degrees on a quarter circle of radius 24 inches. He must shorten his pace (but not his rate of marching) and the outer Member lengthens his pace so that dressing is maintained throughout. Arms should be fully swung (except in slow and double march). NOTE: If the Squad has been ordered to halt before it has completed it’s wheeling, Members who have not wheeled will immediately cover those who have. For wheeling through more than 90 degrees, the command will be repeated. For wheeling through less than 90 degrees, the command “MAJU” will be given at the desired degree of direction after the command “ – BELOK”. When wheeling to the outer flank, the command “Dari kiri/kanan” will precede the preliminary command “Tukar haluan ke kanan/kiri”. Example: “Dari kanan, tukar haluan ke kanan, ke kanan – BELOK” 24” Pivot rank Common faults: a) Not wheeling at the same point as the leading file or rank. b) Inner flank not swinging arms fully. c) Turning the heads in order to maintain dressing.
The Boys’ Brigade Drill Manual 49 E. FORMING SQUAD This manoeuvre (movement) enables a Squad to change formation from Column of Threes to Squad in Line without changing direction. 8. From the Halt to the Halt Command: “Dan berhenti di sebelah kanan, jadikan – SKUAD” The right-hand Member of the *leading (pivot) file stands fast. He acts as the (temporary) Guide. The remainder inclines to the right. “Cepat – JALAN” Right-hand rank Members *The three Members of the leading file. The *pivot file will act as follows: i) The right-hand Member marches forward 3 paces and **halts. ii) The centre rank Member wheels 3 paces into position and **halts 1 pace behind the right-hand Member by doing a right incline. iii) The left-hand Member wheels 3 paces into position and **halts 1 pace behind the centre Member in the same way. The remainder of the right-hand rank will march, by wheeling and **halt into position in line with the Guide at correct intervals, taking the shortest route, i.e. 5 paces, 7 paces, 9 paces etc, forming the leading rank. **includes a check pace followed by stamping twice in quick time. Forming Squad on the left is done in the same way but in the opposite, the Guide being lefthand Member of the leading file, and dressing taken from the right once done. NOTE: When the movement is done in slow time, there will not be a check pace prior to Henti. Therefore, the right foot is brought next to the left foot and followed by 2 quick stamps to completion. The movement should first be taught in slow time. 9. From the Halt to the Move Command: “Di sebelah kanan, jadikan – SKUAD” (“dan berhenti” is omitted) “Cepat – JALAN” The Squad acts as above, except that the Members, instead of halting, will first take the required number of paces follow by an instep, which is to bring the right foot next to the left foot and arms returned to the sides followed by mark time (Hentak Kaki). Heads will be turned to the left in dressing on the first stamp until the command “Maju ke hadapan – MAJU” or “Skuad – HENTI” is given, in which case the Members will turn their heads to the front on the first stamp (right or left foot, depending on the command given).
The Boys’ Brigade Drill Manual 50 NOTE: 1. When forming Squad on the right, all except the left-hand file Members turn their heads to the left on the first stamp; when forming Squad on the left, all except the right-hand file Members turn their heads to the right on the first stamp. 2. When the movement is done in slow time, the right foot will be brought next to the left upon completion of the final odd numbered pace, prior to Hentak Kaki. 10. From the Move to the Halt and Move to the Move To the Left: a) The command is given as the right foot reaches the ground and followed by check pace and stamping on the turn by Members, including the (temporary) Guide. b) The (temporary) Guide takes a check pace with the left foot, then lifts the right leg until the thigh is horizontal and stamp to the ground, but without turning the body and march 3 paces forward. c) The rest of the Squad will incline to the left and march into position, taking the shortest route i.e. 5 paces, 7 paces, 9 paces etc. The inclining is done as in “Separuh Ke Kiri Pusing”, and dressing is taken from the right. d) If the command “Dan berhenti” (at the halt) is included, the Squad will halt on completion, taking a check pace with the right foot followed by 2 quick stamps (Refer to No.8 on page 49). If not, the Squad will mark time after bringing the right foot next to the left foot (Refer to No.9 on page 49). To the Right: The command is given as the left foot reaches the ground. The Squad acts as above from a) to c) but in the opposite, and then carry on from d) below: d) If the command “Dan berhenti” (at the halt) is included, the Squad will halt on completion with 2 quick stamps (LEFT, RIGHT) without the check pace. If not, the Squad will mark time without bringing the left foot next to the right foot. Example: “Dan berhenti di sebelah kiri, jadikan – SKUAD. Cepat – JALAN” Before During After
The Boys’ Brigade Drill Manual 51 NOTE: 1. When forming Squad on the left, dressing will be taken from the right; when forming Squad on the right, dressing will be taken from the left. Dressing taken from the temporary directing flank should be done only once. Subsequent dressing should be taken from the original directing flank. 2. 3. When the movement is done from the move to the move, in slow time, there will not be a check pace prior to marking time. To the left: the right foot is brought next to the left foot and heads turned to the right for dressing on the first stamp. To the right: the left foot is brought next to the right foot and heads turned to the left for dressing on the first stamp. F. MARCHING in SINGLE FILE A Squad, when required to pass through a narrow space, may be marched file by file. In order to do this, the Squad must first be in Column of Threes. 11. From the Halt Command: “Jadikan satu barisan, barisan depan, cepat – JALAN” This command is given for the three ranks. The front rank Members march off in single file. “Barisan tengah, cepat – JALAN” Given as the right feet of the front rank Members reach the ground, the centre rank Members will march off, in step with the front rank, and join the last Member in the front rank. “Barisan belakang, cepat – JALAN” Given as above. The rear rank Members act in the same way. 12. From the March Command: “Jadikan satu barisan, barisan tengah dan belakang, hentak – KAKI” The front rank keeps on marching. The centre and rear ranks mark time. “Barisan tengah – MAJU” The centre rank joins the last Member in the front rank. “Barisan belakang – MAJU” The rear rank joins the last Member of the centre rank.
The Boys’ Brigade Drill Manual 52 NOTE: The front rank should always lead when forming a single file 13. Reforming Command: “Jadikan tiga barisan kepada barisan *hadapan dan berhenti, barisan hadapan – HENTI” “Barisan tengah – HENTI” “Barisan belakang – HENTI” The front rank halts. The centre and rear ranks march towards and halt on their respective positions to form three ranks. *If the single file is led by the rear rank when reforming into Squad in Column of Threes, change “hadapan” to “belakang”. Subsequently, the order of the commands “Barisan hadapan – HENTI” and “Barisan belakang – HENTI” will swap. NOTE: Each command is given at the correct time so that the rank concerned is halted in its correct place. Example: Reforming when a rear rank led the single file If the Squad halts (with the command “Skuad – HENTI”) in single file (led by front rank) before reforming, the following method will be used: Command: “Jadikan tiga barisan kepada barisan hadapan, barisan tengah dan belakang, cepat – JALAN” “Barisan tengah – HENTI” “Barisan belakang – HENTI” The front rank stands fast. The centre and rear ranks march towards their respective positions. NOTE: Instead of halting on reforming, the Squad may be made to mark time, in which case “Hentak kaki – HENTAK” replaces the command “Henti”. For the first method, the command “dan berhenti” is omitted from the preliminary command.

The Boys’ Brigade Drill Manual 61 CHAPTER 7 COMPANY PARADE “The fundamentals of drill are established daily ... If these manoeuvres are all accurately observed and practiced every day then the army will remain virtually undefeatable and always awe inspiring...” – Frederick the Great: History of My Own Times The exact procedure for the opening ceremony of a Company Parade will obviously vary from Company to Company, but it is important that a high standard be set at the commencement of the Parade. The following procedure is followed in many Companies, and is given as a guide to be followed if Company arrangements and circumstances permit. Modifications are allowed to accommodate to the size of the Company. The Orderly Squad (Squad on duty) should prepare the Parade square at least half an hour before the stated time of Parade and also be responsible for making sure that the Parade square is cleared after the Parade. The standard of the Fall-In will, to a large extend, set the mood for the rest of the Parade program. It should therefore be carried out with utmost efficiency. The Company should remain steady when on Parade and movements should be executed smartly. FALL IN At the appointed time, the Company assembles in column formation on the left of the intended Parade, facing inwards, the Members standing Senang Diri approximately opposite where their Squads will ultimately stand. The preliminaries are usually carried out by an Officer, Primer, Staff Sergeant or NCO acting as Duty NCO / Orderly Sergeant, the term which will be used throughout the following details to mean the NCO-in-charge of the assembly. The Duty NCO (also a NCOIC) will take 13 paces from the Squad Commanders’ alignment, *halt and then give the following commands. *all halting includes a check pace followed by stamping twice in quick time. Command: “Penanda, BERATUR” The Squad Commanders, already in numerical order, come to Sedia, take 15 paces from their respective Squads and halt, form up in line, turn about, No.1 Squad Commander stands fast while the other Squad Commanders (No.2 to No.5) take up half-arm intervals dressing to the right without extending their arms, Pandang Depan in succession from the right and stand Senang Diri 2 paces from the front of the Duty NCO. There is a pause equal to 2 quick paces (Dua-Tiga) in between each movement.
The Boys’ Brigade Drill Manual 62 Commands: “Penanda – SEDIA” “*Berderet dalam tiga langkah dari kanan, keluar – PUSING” Squad Commanders stand Sedia. No.1 Squad Commander turns to the right to face the front of the Parade square, while the other Squad Commanders (No.2 to No.5) turn to the left, facing the back of the Parade square. NOTE: *As the Squad Commanders were at half-intervals, each will have at least a pace’s distance from one another once they have turned to their respective sides. After the command “Cepat – JALAN”, only then will this command be justified and make further sense. “Cepat – JALAN” 3 paces “Penanda – DIAM” All except No.1 steps off: No.2 takes 1 pace and halts; No. 3 takes 3 paces and halts; No.4 takes 5 paces and halts, and so on. Once the last Squad Commander halts, all will turn about together. The Duty NCO will march to their right to correct the distances of each Squad Commander by taking 3 paces forward (Refer to the diagram). Each Squad Commander will do Ke Kanan Lurus, by turning the head and without extending the arm, and correct his distance, standing at half-arm interval from the Duty NCO, then Pandang Depan as a sign for the Duty NCO to move on. When done with the last Squad Commander, the Duty NCO will turn about, march back and stand 4 paces in front of No.1 Squad Commander to check the covering and then give the next command. Squad Commanders stand fast. “Penanda, senang – DIRI” Immediately after the command, the Duty NCO will turn right and march to the middle, halt and turn left facing where the Company will be formed. After doing so, the Duty NCO will salute again, turn left and march to the position in line with the first Squad and at least 3 paces away from the longest Squad (not necessarily the Squad in front). After that, the Captain or the Duty Parade Officer should stand on the spot (or near) where the Duty NCO had stood to give commands. The other Officers and Staff Sergeants (SSgts) will take up position in line on whichever side is more convenient, facing inwards (towards the Company), and stand Senang Diri. Captain/Duty Officer: “Pegawai, masuk – BARIS” At the Captain’s or Duty Parade Officer’s command, Officers and SSgts come to Sedia, salute and march smartly to their respective posts, halting on arrival; Officers on the right of their respective Squads, covering off from the front and left dress at full-arm (or half-arm) intervals; SSgts on the left of the Company and right dress. The inspection* (Refer to page 67) then takes place and the rest of the program will follow after Falling Out. (See below) At the end of the program, the Company is again brought together for Closing Parade with the same procedures, after which the Dismissal takes place (See below). The Parade illustration given above is just a basic guideline on how the Company should Fall-in. Company with bigger or smaller Membership; modifications can be done in order to suit their needs. FALL OUT Captain/Duty Officer: “Pegawai, keluar – BARIS” SSgts stand fast. Officers Fall Out as in Basic Drill. “Kompeni, keluar – BARIS” The Members and SSgts Fall Out as in Basic Drill. Then the Captain Falls Out as well on his own. DISMISSAL Captain/Duty Officer: “Pegawai, keluar – BARIS” “Pegawai, BERSURAI” SSgts stand fast. The Officers march forward and wheel to the left forming a single file. After halting, they will turn right, standing 2 paces in front of the Captain, at one pace intervals. (Refer to Chapter 6 No.6 on page 56) After the Company has been dismissed, the Captain and the Officers will Fall Out as in Basic Drill together.
The Boys’ Brigade Drill Manual 66 IMPORTANT: It must be understood that Pre-Juniors should not “Parade”. The Junior Section can Fall-in the same way as the Senior Section or otherwise in a simpler formation. Examples of formations are given below as a guide – the Senior Section Fall-in first, followed by the Junior Section and finally the Pre-Juniors led into position by their own Officers. Formation 1 – for a small Company Formation 2 Formation 3
The Boys’ Brigade Drill Manual 67 *INSPECTION To ensure a high standard of personal cleanliness and upkeep and wearing of uniform, a thorough and strict inspection should be carried out each week. An inter-Squad competition may prove to be an incentive to the Members. The Captain may inspect the Parade each week, but in larger Companies it is suggested that the Officers should inspect the Squads in rotation, each taking a different Squad each month. When the Inspection Officers approaches the Squad, the Squad Commander will call the Squad to Sedia, take a pace forward and salute the Officer. After he has been inspected, he should fall out and escorts the Officer on the inspection of his Squad and, on completion, salutes the Officer and stands the Squad at Senang Diri. Notes for the Inspecting Officers The possible number of points a Squad may gain should be large enough to allow for deductions. The sample table of inspection and point system can be obtained from BBM HQ. The Inspecting Officer should see that the Members are clean and neat and that their uniforms have been properly washed and pressed, correctly worn and polished. General Inspection: The Officer will first look at the Squad: 1. The Squad should be standing correctly at attention and not moving. 2. The Squad should be correctly dressed, tallest on right and shortest on the left. He will then look at each Member in turn: 1. The Member should be clean and neat. 2. He should be standing properly and not slouching. 3. His uniform should be clean and pressed. It should fit him properly. Detail Inspection: The Members should be closely inspected in this order: 1. Head The cap should be worn properly and should fit him. It should be brushed and clean. The badge should be correctly positioned and his hair should be tidy. Both should be in accordance to the Uniform Regulation. 2. Body The uniform should be fitting and clean. The shirt should be properly tucked in. The pockets should not contain bulky objects. All buttons should be fastened. 3. Haversack The haversack should be clean and tight. All metal parts should be polished. 4. Belt The belt should be fairly tight and the buckle in the centre of the body. The metal buckle and leather should be polished.
The Boys’ Brigade Drill Manual 68 5. Footwear The boots should be well polished and not worn out. They should be tightly laced. The stockings should be worn with the fold just below the kneecap. NOTE: 1. No watches are allowed when in full uniform. 2. NCOs’ lanyards must be attached with a whistle. 3. BB awards (badges) should not be polished but wiped with a clean cloth. 4. The chevron worn on the right arm should cover the folded sleeve [Figure 7.1]. Figure 7.1 Chevron over folded sleeve Figure 7.2 A possible solution for the chevron
The Boys’ Brigade Drill Manual 69 CHAPTER 8 CEREMONIAL From the earliest times, warriors used a banner or other symbol to identify specific units and to serve as a rallying point for troops. In medieval days, the standard or banner was used to signal a general assault, which was generated by a cry of “Advance your banners!” All companies are involved from time to time in certain items of ceremonial. Some of these are dealt with in separate leaflets, but the more common are included here. A. POSITIONS of the COLOUR BEARER 1. The Order The pike and Colour is held with the right hand where the lowest corner of the Colour reaches. The pike is perpendicular (upright), the bottom of the pike resting on the ground in line with and against the right toe cap [Figure 8.1]. The carrier is always worn on the left shoulder as though a sash. Figure 8.1 The Order Figure 8.2 Senang Diri and Rehatkan Diri 2. Stand at Ease and Stand Easy The normal movements are carried out, but the left hand remains at the side, the Colour kept vertically at the right side [Figure 8.2].
The Boys’ Brigade Drill Manual 70 3. The Slope The pike is placed on the right shoulder and held with the right hand, the elbow close into the side, and the right fore arm parallel with the ground. The Colour hangs over and covers the right shoulder and arm [Figure 8.3]. On a long march, the pike may be changed to the left shoulder. Cased Colours are to be held this way whenever on the move. Figure 8.3 The Slope 4. The Carry The pike is carried vertically in the socket of the carrier [Figure 8.4]. The corner of the Colour is held in the right hand, which also grasps the pike in front of the mouth, with the back of the hand to the front, wrist and fore arm horizontal. Cased Colours are never to be held this way. Figure 8.4 The Carry (Side and Front view)
The Boys’ Brigade Drill Manual 71 5. The Dip The Colour is lowered to render a salute to the Guest of Honour or Inspecting Officer during the General Salute. Immediately after the command “Hormat Panglima – HORMAT”, Let Fly (the corner of the Colour held in the right hand is released), remove the Colour from the carrier, the left hand grasping the socket to steady the carrier, and place the pike under the right armpit. Carry the pike at a 45 degree-angle to the ground, with the BB Brass Insignia upwards [Figure 8.5a], well out to the right (about 45 degrees from the front) with the right hand and lower the left hand to the side. Figure 8.5a Pike carried at 45-degree angle upwards and to the right. (Front and Side view) Lower the Colour with a sweeping motion to a position in front of the right foot. Thus the Colour shall be spread on the ground to the right of the pike [Figure 8.5b] with the back of the right hand towards the ground and the BB Brass Insignia just above (not touching) the ground. Figure 8.5b Colour lowered to the ground with sweeping motion. (Inclined and Front view)
The Boys’ Brigade Drill Manual 72 IMPORTANT: If the ground is wet or muddy, the Colour shall be held in the left hand to prevent it from being soiled, by holding on to the lower end of the Colour immediately after removing it from the carrier and lower it until the BB insignia is just above the ground [Figure 8.5c]. Figure 8.5c Lower end of Colour held with left hand when ground is wet (Front and Close-up view) The various positions are used as follows: a) The Order : i. When halted, except in c). ii. Stand at Ease, or Stand Easy. iii. The Benediction. b) The Slope : i. On the march, except in c). c) The Carry : i. Marching on and off Parade. ii. General Salute. iii. Inspection. iv. March past. v. Going into or coming out of church. vi. The National Anthem. d) Let Fly and the Dip : i. General Salute
The Boys’ Brigade Drill Manual 73 Significance of a Colour: life, spirit, pride, honour, strength. A Colour must be treated with HONOUR and RESPECT. It should be donated to a Company. A complete Colour consists of the following: 1) Colour Case (cloth or leather) 2) Pike 3) The BB Brass Insignia (crest) 4) Colour Cord 5) Colour Carrier (cloth or leather) 6) Flag with side fringes Figure 8.6 Parts of a complete Colour B. THE COLOUR PARTY 6. Colour Bearers Colours may be carried by Officers, Primers, Staff Sergeants or NCOs. The Colour Bearer (of the superior Colour if two Colours are carried) is the most senior member of the Colour Party and he alone gives commands. 7. Positions of the Colour Party Colour Parties consist of either one Colour or two Colours. When two Colours are carried, the superior Colour will always be on the right of the other. The most superior Colour is the National Brigade Colour followed by the State Colour and the lesser Company Colour.
The Boys’ Brigade Drill Manual 74 Ruling: a) Only State Colour will be mounted in the State organized events. b) Only Brigade Colour will be mounted in the Brigade organized events. c) In the event of BB and GB joint events (Company or State or Brigade level), two Colours can be mounted with the senior (BB or GB) Company’s Colour would be positioned on the right side of the Colour Party. d) In the event of join event between two Companies or more, the host Company Colour would have the privileged to be mounted as the senior Colour during the ceremonial event. e) If three Colours were to be mounted, the superior Colour (i.e. the State’s) will take post in the middle, with the second Colour (i.e. the District’s) on its right, and the lesser (i.e. the Company’s) Colour on its left. The Colour Sergeant Major (CSM) shall stand 4 paces behind the Colour Bearer. A CSM should be the most senior NCO available, lower ranking than the Colour Bearer. Other NCOs or Seniors may take the role of Colour Sergeants (CSgts), whom will flank the Colour Bearer (for one Colour) at full-arm intervals or stand 2 paces behind the Colour Bearers (for two Colours). One Colour Two Colours CSgt CSgt superior Colour 4 paces 4 paces CSgts CSM CSM The Colour Bearer will command “Kumpulan panji-panji, masuk – BARIS” for the members of the Colour Party to march into their positions respectively. 8. Colour in the Guard of Honour The Colour Party is the highest order in a ceremony. Only the superior Colour should be given the prominence in the Guard of Honour (GOH). Therefore only one Colour will take position in the GOH (Kawalan Kehormatan). For any other event, two Colours are allowed, where the lesser Colour joins the Colour Party, i.e. marching of Colours into a church after the Guard of Honour.
The Boys’ Brigade Drill Manual 75 9. Movements of the Colour Party 9.1 One Colour The Colour Party may turn about or temporarily turn into single file, e.g. when moving in a narrow aisle in Church. Otherwise, the Colour Party should always remain in Line, and changes of direction should therefore be carried out by means of wheeling, as follows: Colour Bearer: “Kumpulan panji-panji, tukar haluan ke kiri / kanan, ke kiri / kanan – BELOK” The Colour Party will wheel to the new direction. 9.2 Two Colours The Colour Party should always remain in Line, and changes of direction are carried out as indicated above, the CSgts in the rear maintaining their correct position behind the Colour Bearers. In a church ceremony, the superior Colour shall be the last to be handed over to the minister and the first to be received by the Colour Party. NOTE: 1. When carrying out movements in confined spaces, e.g. in Church, or when turning about, variations can be made to suit local circumstances, but the aim should be for members of the Colour Party to move in a smart manner to their new positions. 2. Inside a church, no stamping or marking time is allowed. The foot should slide in silently when halting or turning. Changes of position should be carried out smartly in the simplest manner, without loss of bearing, the left hand being used to assist if necessary. 3. Kneeling should only be done when receiving a new Colour, and after it has been consecrated by the minister (or Chaplain, Pastor, Reverend, etc.). C. DRESS CODE 10. The Cane is used by the Parade Commander (PC), Assistant Parade Commander (APC) and CSM during Ceremonial Drill Function e.g. Guard of Honour and Colour Party. (See G. CANE DRILL on page 93) 11. The Red Sash is worn only by the CSM, CSgts and Side Sergeants (SideSgts). Members with the ranks of Corporal and below, if appointed, will also put on the sash but they must remove them once the ceremony is done and not wear it throughout the day. However, the CSM should at least be an NCO. Staff Sergeants (SSgts) shall retain the blue sash and Primers will not put on any sash if appointed to the above. 12. Pen and watch or any bulky items should not be visibly seen on the uniform.
The Boys’ Brigade Drill Manual 76 D. COMPANY INSPECTION and DISPLAY The Company is drawn up in Line, with the Colour Party and Band, if on Parade, in convenient positions depending on the size and shape of the hall/field. In the Guard of Honour (GOH), the Parade Commander (PC) should always be the highest in rank, followed by the APC, the Colour Bearer, the CSM, SideSgt1, SideSgt2, the Colour Sergeants, and the rest of the other Members. 13. Sizing All movements are the same as in Basic Squad Drill. It is usually done by the SideSgt1 (senior Primer/SSgt/NCO). The SideSgt2 (Primer/SSgt/NCO) will march to his post at the left of the front rank automatically during “Lurus ke kanan – LURUS”, halting on arrival, turn about facing the front, right dress and wait for the next command. 13.1 Guard of Honour without Colour Party After giving the command “Pandang – DEPAN”, SideSgt1 will report to the PC and march to his post at the right of the front rank, halting on arrival, turn about facing the front, left dress, and then Pandang Depan. Once the SideSgt1 has taken his position, the PC will give the command “Pegawai, masuk – BARIS”, at which both the PC and APC will march to their positions, halting on arrival and take the appropriate turnings to face the front. The PC and APC shall stand 3 paces in front of the third file from the right and left respectively. They must correct this distance at each time the command to dress is given. SideSgt1 SideSgt2 Guide 3 paces PC APC Parade Commander: “Buka barisan – GERAK” (PC and APC stand fast) “Lurus ke kanan – LURUS” (Guide stand fast) The front rank takes 2 paces forward, and rear rank takes 2 paces to the rear. (Refer to Chapter 5 No.3 on page 44) Both PC and APC will turn about to face GOH to correct their 3–pace distances and position from their respective files, leaving enough space for the inspection. At the same time, SideSgt1 will turn right, take 1 pace forward and *halt, then turn about to face the front rank. Dressing will be taken in close formation – shoulder to shoulder. *all halting includes a check pace followed by stamping twice in quick time.
The Boys’ Brigade Drill Manual 77 Side Sergeant 1: “Diam. Diam – barisan depan” “Diam. Diam – barisan tengah” “Diam. Diam – barisan belakang” “Diam kawalan kehormatan, pandang – DEPAN” Once dressing is corrected, SideSgt1 will check the front rank’s dressing and commands “Diam. Diam – barisan depan”. He will then turn left, march 3 paces and halt, turn right to check the centre rank’s dressing. If the centre rank is not at the correct distance, the centre rank will correct it immediately before he commands “Diam. Diam – barisan tengah”. He will also do the same procedure for the rear rank before he commands “Diam. Diam – barisan belakang” Once the rear rank has been checked, SideSgt1 will return to the front rank, by marching 5 paces and halt, turn left to face the front rank again and give the command to Pandang Depan. At the same time, both PC and APC will turn about again to face the front, while SideSgt1 marches towards the Guide in the appropriate number of paces and halt, so that he is in close formation once he turns right to face the front. Parade Commander: “Hormat panglima – HORMAT” If there is a band on Parade, the Band plays the General Salute when the PC gives the command “– HORMAT”. The PC and APC will salute, raising the hand on the first note of music and lowering it on the last. If there is no Band on Parade, on the command “ – HORMAT”. Similarly, the PC and APC will salute, the positions being held for a period equal to 9 paces in quick time. The count is: 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8 9 UP………………………………DOWN NOTE: The Inspecting Officer, if in uniform, also salutes when the command “Hormat panglima – HORMAT” is given. An Officer serving as his/her Aide-De-Camp (ADC) does not salute during the General Salute. ADC – An Officer who serves as an assistant to the Inspecting Officer/Guest of Honour. After the first General Salute, the PC reports to the Inspecting Officer and accompanies him/her during the inspection of the GOH. The Escorts (usually NCOs not of the GOH) to the Inspecting Officer are optional. Otherwise, the PC will take the lead.
The Boys’ Brigade Drill Manual 78 PC Escorts At the end of the inspection, PC will again report to the Inspecting Officer, goes back to his position and does the following: Parade Commander: “Hormat panglima – HORMAT” “Tutup barisan – GERAK” (PC and APC stand fast) “Lurus ke kanan – LURUS” (Guide stands fast) Same as before. (Refer to page 77) The rear rank take 2 paces forward, and the front rank takes 2 paces to the rear. (Refer to Chapter 5 No.3 on page 44) Both PC and APC will turn about to face GOH to correct their 3–pace distances and position from their respective files. SideSgt1 will turn right; take 1 pace forward and halt, then turn about to face the front rank. Dressing is corrected in full-arm intervals but without **extending the arms. **Only allowed during practices. Side Sergeant 1: “Diam. Diam kawalan kehormatan, pandang – DEPAN” This time, no checking is needed for other ranks. SideSgt1 will turn right, take 1 pace forward and *halt, then turn about to face the front rank and give the command to eyes front. Again, both PC and APC will turn about again while SideSgt1 marches towards the Guide in the appropriate number of paces and halt, so that he has a full-arm interval once he turns right to face the front. Parade Commander: “Pegawai, keluar – BARIS” PC will then command the GOH to march out of the Parade Ground and Fall Out the Officers. Then SideSgt1 shall march out from the front rank to regain command to Fall Out the Squad.
The Boys’ Brigade Drill Manual 79 13.2 Guard of Honour with Colour Party After sizing by the SideSgt1, the Squad will first be divided them into two divisions by proving Squad. SideSgt2 should be at the left of the front rank prior to proving Squad. a) Proving Squad Side Sergeant 1: “Dari kanan – BILANG” Only the front rank Members will number, in succession from the right. Those in the centre and rear ranks will take note of the number of the front rank Members in their respective files. The left-hand Member of the right half Squad will be called: “Nombor *ENAM” As he is called, he lifts his left forearm, until it is horizontal, without moving the elbow from the side of the body. The fingers of the left hand point straight and are together. *Number may change according to the number of files in the Squad. “Nombor enam, kiri daripada sebelah kanan skuad, yang lain kiri SKUAD” On the command “SKUAD”, the left-hand Member of the right Squad lowers his hand back into place, clenching it again. “Kiri skuad, enam langkah ke sebelah kiri – GERAK” The left Squad will take 6 paces to their left as in basic Drill. (Refer to Chapter 4 No.18 on page 28) “Lurus ke dalam – LURUS” “Pandang – DEPAN” The Members of the inner files (nearest to the gap) stand fast while dressing is being taken. The right Squad takes left dressing and the left Squad takes right dressing in full-arm intervals but without **extending the arms. **Only allowed during practices. After giving the command “Pandang – DEPAN”, SideSgt1 will report to the PC and march to his post at the right of the front rank, halting on arrival, turn about facing the front, left dress, and then Pandang Depan. Once SideSgt1 has taken his position, the PC will give the command “Pegawai, masuk – BARIS”, at which both the PC and APC will march to their positions, halting on arrival and take the appropriate turnings to face the front. The PC and APC shall stand 3 paces in front of the third file from the right half Squad and left half Squad respectively. They must correct this distance at each time the command to dress is given. However, this rule may not apply if there are less than five files in each half Squad. Thus, the PC and APC shall position themselves right in the middle of their Squads.
The Boys’ Brigade Drill Manual 80 This is the ready position for the Colour Party to march in. Gap SideSgt1 Inner Files SideSgt2 3 paces PC APC b) Uncasing and Casing the Colour Uncasing and Casing the Colour is to be carried out at the corner away from the GOH. Usually, the Colour would have been uncased before Proving Squad is done. Careful planning should be made to avoid confusion and falling behind schedule. When moving around with a cased Colour, it should be placed at the Slope. An available NCO or Private would be appointed to be the Colour Orderly (CO), to assist the CSM and bear the Colour case during the uncasing and casing the Colour. He will also Fall-In with the Colour Party prior to uncasing of the Colour, standing 2 paces behind the CSM [Figure 8.7]. The CO will always be with the Colour Party in this position as long as the Colour remains cased, even when moving from one destination to another. Once the Colour is uncased, he will not be part of the Colour Party until the ceremony is over and the Colour is to be cased again. 2 paces Figure 8.7 Before the Uncasing If the Colour will not be uncased immediately then the Colour Party should be commanded to stand at Senang/Rehatkan Diri. Otherwise, the Uncasing should begin right away. The Colour Bearer will first command “Kumpulan panji-panji – SEDIA” with the cased Colour at the Order [Figure 8.7] and proceed as follows:
The Boys’ Brigade Drill Manual 81 i) Uncasing the Colour The CSM and CO will both turn right, march forward 13 paces led by the CSM, wheeling whenever necessary from the right side of the Colour Party. The CSM will halt facing 2 paces in front of the Colour, while the CO halts at the right of the cased Colour. They will salute for a pause equal to 4 paces in quick time before lowering their hands [Figure 8.8]. Figure 8.8 Both the CSM and CO salutes Then the CSM marches to the left side of the cased Colour. The Colour Bearer, using both hands, will hold the cased Colour up tilting at 45 degrees, keeping both arms straight [Figure 8.9b]. At the same time, he lifts his left leg and stamp to the rear [Figure 8.9a], keeping his body almost square to the left. Figure 8.9a Left leg to the rear Figure 8.9b Colour Bearer holds the cased Colour at a 45-degree tilt.
The Boys’ Brigade Drill Manual 82 The CSM first hands his cane to the CO who will receive it and hold it upright with his left hand. Then the CSM uncase the Colour and place the case on the CO’s left forearm. The CO may help support the BB brass insignia with his right hand while the CSM unties the Colour’s cord and unfurl the Colour fold by fold [Figure 8.10]. Figure 8.10 CSM unties the cord and unfurls the Colour When the Colour has been fully unfurled, the CSM will fold it again in a triangular manner, to give it a steady and smart form, in only 2 folds [Figure 8.11 & 8.12]. Colour Bearer will hold on to each fold with his right thumb [Figure 8.13]. Figure 8.11 First fold Figure 8.12 Second fold Figure 8.13 Right thumb on each fold
The Boys’ Brigade Drill Manual 83 Once done, the Colour Bearer will hold the Colour up and stamp to the Carry position [Figure 8.4], placing the Colour onto the carrier. The CO hands the cane back to the CSM but keeps the Colour’s case on his left forearm. The CSM turns left, comes to the front facing 2 paces in front of the Colour. Both CSM and CO will salute again [Figure 8.8] for a pause equal to 4 paces in quick time before lowering their hands. Then the CSM turns left while the CO turns about. Both will march to the rear from the right side of the Colour Party, CSM taking 13 paces back to his position and halt, facing front on arrival. The CO will just march to the rear away from the Colour Party and halt elsewhere. The Colour Bearer commands “Kumpulan panji-panji, senang – DIRI”, but he will remain at Sedia position. Then he will first place the Colour at the Order before standing Senang Diri. The Colour Party is now ready to march into the GOH at the command of the PC. ii) Casing the Colour The steps to case the Colour are the same as uncasing the Colour. It is usually done immediately after the Colour Party had marched out of the Guard of Honour. The Colour Orderly will have to be ready with the Colour’s case at the place where the Colour would be cased. The Colour must be properly folded in 2 folds [Figure 8.14 & 8.15] and then tied with the cord coiled around it [Figure 8.16] tied with a simple knot before it is cased. Figure 8.14 First fold Figure 8.15 Second fold
The Boys’ Brigade Drill Manual 84 Once done, the cased Colour will be brought to the Order and both the CSM and CO will salute [Figure 8.8]. Then they will march 13 paces to their positions [Figure 8.7] and halt. The Colour Bearer will place the cased Colour at the Slope then command to Fall-Out from there, by making a halfturn to the right and march 3 paces off. Figure 8.16 Cord coiled around the Colour c) Marching in of the Colour Party into the Guard of Honour Parade Commander: “Kumpulan panji-panji, masuk – BARIS” The Colour Party is commanded to take its position in the GOH. Colour Bearer: “TUAN! Kumpulan panjipanji – SEDIA” “Dari tengah, cepat – JALAN” “Kumpulan panji-panji, tukar haluan ke kiri, ke kiri – BELOK” “Kumpulan panji-panji, hentak kaki – HENTAK” “Kumpulan panji-panji – HENTI” “Kumpulan panji-panji akan menghadap ke hadapan, ke belakang – PUSING” The Colour Bearer will first come to the Order before responding “TUAN!” and places the Colour at the Carry. Then he commands the Colour Party to stand Sedia. As the Colour Party marches into the GOH, the PC and APC will salute until the Colour Party halts (Henti). All other Officers, SSgts, and Primers not inside the GOH will also salute, but Members shall just stand Sedia. The Colour Party wheels-in and is now facing the GOH. The Colour Bearer and the CSgts mark time in line with the front rank. However, the CSM marches straight to the rear, through the left side of the Colour Bearer and mark time at a 4-pace distance from the rear rank. Colour Party turns about to the front.
The Boys’ Brigade Drill Manual 85 The GOH now is ready and waiting to march into the Parade square for inspection. CSM 4 paces CSgt CSgt SideSgt1 SideSgt2 Colour Bearer PC APC d) Guard of Honour Marching In or Out of the Parade Square The PC is always in command even though the APC may sometimes lead the GOH. The Boys’ Brigade Drill Manual 91 F. FORMING TWO and THREE RANKS 17. Forming Two Ranks from Three Ranks This is important at the Official Parade for the Guard of Honour to form two ranks from three ranks for inspection. Only the centre rank will do the forming. Teaching by numbers a) “Jadikan dua barisan dengan nombor, skuad – SATU” Odd (ganjil) numbers and even (genap) numbers will take a left inclined 24-inch pace forward and backward respectively with the left foot. b) “Skuad – DUA” Odd numbers and even numbers will take a 30-inch pace forward and backward respectively with the right foot. c) “Skuad – TIGA” Lift up the left leg until the thigh is horizontal to the ground and stamp to Sedia position. NOTE: Teach the movements of the odd numbers first then proceed to the even numbers. By using this method you may allow the three ranks to learn and experience by exchanging the centre rank Members with those of other ranks. Common faults: a) Centre rank Members not sure of their number. b) Not taking enough pace distance forward and resulting incorrect timing. c) Not lifting the left leg at the correct level to stamp to attention. d) Shuffling. 18. Forming Three Ranks from Two Ranks After the inspection, the Guard of Honour must form back into three ranks again before marching out. Teaching by numbers a) “Jadikan tiga barisan dengan nombor, skuad – SATU” Odd (ganjil) numbers and even (genap) numbers will take a 30-inch pace backward and forward respectively with the left foot. b) “Skuad – DUA” Odd (ganjil) numbers and even (genap) numbers will take a right inclined 24-inch pace forward and backward respectively with the right foot. c) “Skuad – TIGA” Lift up the left leg until the thigh is horizontal to the ground and stamp to Sedia position. Common faults: Same as the Form Two Ranks.
