Drill Manual 2005

The Boys’ Brigade Drill Manual 94 21. Saluting The left arm will return to the side simultaneously as the right arm is raised to salute. The cane will be firmly held horizontally in position under the left armpit [Figure 8.19]. As the right arm is brought down to the side from the salute, the left arm will return to hold the cane by the knob as in Sedia position [Figure 8.17]. The same procedure is used for saluting on the march and when dismissing. Figure 8.19 Saluting with Cane 22. On the March and Marking time The cane remains clamped under the armpit, held horizontally with the left arm as in Sedia position, with the right arm swinging in quick march or kept at the side in slow march and when in quick/slow mark time.

The Boys’ Brigade Drill Manual 95 CHAPTER 9 ADVANCED DRILL “The spirit of discipline, as distinct from its outward and visible guises, is the result of association with martial traditions and their living embodiment.” – B. H. Liddell Hart, Thoughts on War, 1944 INTRODUCTION Advanced Drill is a logical and progressive step forward from Basic Drill, and every Company should aim to introduce Advanced Drill into its programme, once the principles of Basic Drill have been understood and mastered by the members. In Advanced Drill, the Company is divided into two or more Sections, each of which acts under its Section Commander, who will normally be an NCO or Senior. There are two main reasons for Advanced Drill: 1. A greater number of movements may be included, thus adding to the interest and variety, but at the same time, the movements carried out by each Section are only those included in Basic Drill, and no unnecessary additional complications are added. 2. The use of NCOs or Senior Members as Section Commanders gives them an additional interest in drill, helps them to develop their leadership, and generally recognizes their ability to accept responsibilities. Throughout the following pages, Advanced Drill is shown in two Sections. Large Companies may however wish to drill in three Sections. Section No.3 acts exactly the same way as Section No.2. One additional point needs to be made for the benefit of small Companies. Normally, at least 26 members are required to adequately perform Advanced Drill movements. However, the centre rank may be omitted, and all the movements which follow can be carried out in two ranks with only 10, or preferably 14 members, including Section Commanders. In such cases, the words “Column of Threes” should be replaced by “Column of Twos”. It is hoped therefore that this section of the book will prove to be well within the capabilities of the vast majority of Companies, who will thereby improve their performance, and retain the interest and enthusiasm of the members.

The Boys’ Brigade Drill Manual 96 A. DEFINITIONS Company in Line Two or more Sections in line, side by side on the same alignment, with three paces interval between them. Interval Company in Column of Threes A Company in line turned to a flank. Company in Column of Sections Two or more Sections in line on parallel alignment at a distance from one another equal to their own frontage (between each Section), plus three paces. Frontage Distance Interval The lateral space between Sections on the same alignment measured from the left hand member of one Section to the right hand member of the next. Distance The space between Sections in Column, measured from the heels of the front rank of one Section to the heels of the front rank of the next.

The Boys’ Brigade Drill Manual 97 B. FALLING IN The Section Commanders are first detailed, and stand Senang Diri at the rear of the Parade ground. Company Commander: “KOMPENI” (COMPANY) The Company comes to the Senang Diri position. “Penanda, BERATUR” (Marker, take – POST) A member, previously detailed (the tallest member in the Company) comes to attention, and after a pause equal to 2 paces in quick time, marches out and halts in front of, and 2 paces away from the Company Commander. “Yang tinggi ke kanan, rendah ke kiri, dalam satu barisan – PARAS” (Tallest on the right, shortest on the left, in single rank – SIZE) The remainder of the Company come to attention, and after a pause equal to 2 paces in quick time, march towards the marker, and arrange themselves according to their size, in single rank, tallest on the right, shortest on the left. Dressing in close formation (shoulder to shoulder) is taken up by the right, and the position of attention is maintained. “Pandang – DEPAN” (Eyes – FRONT) All heads turn to the front smartly and sharply. “Dalam dua / tiga barisan – BILANG” (Into two / three Sections, NUMBER) Members number off sharply in even time and tone from right to left. If two Sections are to be formed, members call out “SATU” (ONE), “DUA” (TWO), “SATU” (ONE), “DUA” (TWO) and so on. If three Sections are to be formed, members call out “SATU” (ONE), “DUA” (TWO), “TIGA” (THREE) and so on. Heads and eyes are kept steady to the front. “Nombor Satu, empat langkah ke hadapan, Nombor Dua, empat langkah ke belakang – GERAK” (Numbers One, four paces step forward, Numbers Two, four paces step back – MARCH) In forming two Sections, the numbers one take 4 paces step forward, and the numbers two take 4 paces step backward. In forming three Sections, the command will be: “Nombor Satu, enam langkah ke hadapan, Nombor Tiga, enam langkah ke belakang – GERAK” (Numbers One, six paces step forward, Numbers Three, six paces step back – MARCH) “Lurus ke kanan – LURUS” (Dressing, right – DRESS) “Pandang – DEPAN” (Eyes – FRONT) Each rank dresses in close formation, the right hand member of the rank in the rear taking a pace to the right, to cover the right hand member of the rank in the front. “Kompeni – BILANG” (Company – NUMBER) Each rank will number simultaneously from the right.

The Boys’ Brigade Drill Manual 98 “Nombor ganjil, satu langkah ke hadapan, nombor genap, satu langkah ke belakang – GERAK” The odd numbers of each rank take 1 pace step forward, and the even numbers take 1 pace step backward. (Odd numbers, one pace step forward, even numbers, one pace step back – MARCH) “Orang yang di sebelah kanan sekali diam, nombor ganjil ke kanan, nombor genap ke kiri, barisan kanan dan kiri – PUSING” The odd numbers with the exception of the Numbers One, turn right and the even numbers turn left. (Stand fast the right hand man (or Numbers One stand fast), odd numbers to the right, even numbers to the left, ranks right and left – TURN) “Jadikan kompeni, cepat – JALAN” (Form Company, quick – MARCH) Each Section acts as in Basic Drill and form three ranks. “Lurus ke kanan – LURUS” (Dressing, right – DRESS) Each Section acts as in Basic Drill. Then No.1 Section Commander will march forward and halt in line with the front rank and 3 paces from the Guide. He turns left (facing the Section), checks dressing, and commands “Diam. Diam, Seksyan Pertama” (No.1 Section – STEADY). (See diagram on the left) Then he turns about, marches down 7 paces, halt (includes a check pace follows by stamping twice) and turns right facing the Section, standing 3 paces from the Guide. If No.2 Section is at the wrong distance, its Guide will do the Right Dress and align himself to the Section Commander, the rest of the Squad follow suit. Once aligned, the Squad eyes front accordingly. Section Commander then checks dressing for No.2 Section which follows by the command: “Diam. Diam, Seksyan Kedua” (No.2 Section – STEADY). If there are more Sections, he shall repeat the same procedure for each Section. Once all Sections’ dressings checked, he shall turn right, march to the front and halt in line with the front rank of No.1 Section, turn left and command “Diam kompeni. Pandang – DEPAN” (Company – STEADY. Eyes – FRONT). At this command, he will also turn left and march back to his original position at the rear of the parade ground, next to No.2 Section Commander, halt and turn about to face the front. “Section Commanders, masuk – BARIS” (Section Commanders, fall – IN) Section Commanders come to attention, turn to the right, and march forward, halting in line with and on the right of the front ranks of their Sections. The Company is now formed for Advanced Drill in Column of Sections, and if required, may be moved into Line by one of the movements.

The Boys’ Brigade Drill Manual 99 C. POSITIONS and DUTIES of SECTION COMMANDERS Section Commanders play a very important part in Advanced Drill. Duties and words of command are explained in each movement, but the basic positions and changes on certain words of command are summarized here for easy reference. 1.
