The Pearce Museum In 1991, Charles S. Pearce, Jr. purchased a gift for his wife, Peggy. That gift was a letter from the battlefield at Antietam written by Joshua Lawrence Chamberlain to his wife, Fanny. This letter would spark an ongoing interest in the collection of Civil War Documents. In 1996, they graciously donated that collection to Navarro College. Since that time, it has grown significantly. Charles and Peggy started collecting art when they lived in Santa Fe, New Mexico, home to many contemporary Western artists. Through the works of living artists, they wanted each piece to tell a part of the story of the great American West. As this unique collection grew, it also needed a home. Navarro College and the Pearce Museum are thankful to have such generous benefactors and significant collections. Where the Civil War, American West and Prehistoric Texas come to life through letters, artifacts, and Artwork.

8 In my early years, I loved to draw the faces of my friends and paint landscapes. My illustrations of my teachers and friends from Burbank High School in California were published in the Burbank High School Yearbook. I received a Disney Scholarship to attend Art Center in Los Angeles where I graduated and became an architectural illustrator. I also served in the U.S. Army where I was the editor of the Stuttgart Military newspaper at the Army Base in Germany. It was exciting to travel and photograph different European countries. When I returned later to travel in Europe in a VW Camper for a year with my wife Betty, I was able to paint many scenes including the Swiss, German and Italian Alps, and the small fishing villages along the Spanish and Italian coasts. It was a remarkable event, as my career changed from architectural illustrator to full time artist and I was able to sell my paintings through different art galleries across the U.S., and juried and competitive art shows. Over the past thirty years, I have focused on painting the faces, landscape and wildlife of our “American West of Today”. I also love reading the history of of the American West and I search for subject matter that will convey my sense of excitement that I feel for God’s gift of life. I am grateful for the talent given, and the opportunities to communicate that feeling about America, love of our amazing Country and the Lord’s Guidance in the development of our Country's Freedom for all to become who we are throughout our history. My art has been considered traditional, and I enjoy drawing in charcoal and conte, learning to wet both mediums to “paint” with it as well as create texture. Winning art competitions is exciting and I enjoy meeting artists at the shows. Receiving the Gold Medal for my conte drawing/painting at the Autry Museum was a special honor. Conte is one of the oldest mediums used by many famous artists. I served as the President of the American Indian and Cowboy Artists showing in San Dimas CA and at the Autry Museum in Los Angeles. I also was featured in a one man show at the San Bernardino County Museum in Redlands, CA, and the featured artist at the Paso Robes Fairgrounds in Paso Robles, CA. More recently I was the featured artist at the Gilman Ranch Museum in Banning, CA. It was also exciting to be one of four artists featured at the Los Angeles County Fairgrounds in Pomona, CA. I have enjoyed winning over 50 major awards and have sold my paintings in art galleries and at art shows throughout the U.S. including the APA 2023 Best of Show Award and the Laguna Plein Air Artists Award in the summer of 2023! I am proud to be a Signature Member of the American Plains Artists and the Oil Painters of America. I am a Signature Artist and Master Artist of Watercolor West. My conte and charcoal drawings and both my oil and watercolor paintings have been juried in the California Art Club in their Gold Medal Exhibitions and the American Impressionists Society. Gold Medal winning Conte is a medium used by many of the masters from Pablo Picasso to Henri Matisse, Edward Hopper, and Bob Kuhn. I am especially proud to have my original conte painterly drawing selected for the APA Signature Artists Exhibition at the Pearce Museum at Navarro College in Corsicana, Texas! Except for raising a family, painting is the most rewarding thing I have ever done. I find it extremely difficult to summarize why I paint. All I know is that when I paint, everything else stops, and I lose myself in the painting. I want people who see my work to share in that feeling. Recently, my interest in Western Art has been re-ignited in a big way because of a trip that Debbie and I took in 2022 to South Dakota where we spent several wonderful days at a working ranch. There I had unlimited access to photograph models including Native Americans, cowboys (and girls), mountain men (and women), and more. Some of the paintings based on this trip are just now starting to appear in my Painting Portfolio (appears below “Painting News” on the “Painting” page). Click on the “Painting” link in the menu. There are more works in various phases of completion in my studio with many more to come. Some may find this strange, but I actually try not to refer to myself as an “artist” because when I look at the master painters of yesterday as well as modern masters, I have a very long way to go to earn the title of “artist”. I hope to always strive to achieve that status, but until then I will be just a “painter” who is trying to be the best he can be. My informal art training began years ago when my dad would take me out to sketch. Those early times instilled in me a love for painting and nature. Painting was put on the back burner while I pursued a formal education in graphic design and illustration in Colorado. After four decades of creating award winning communications for a variety of business sectors, I concluded that it was time to return to painting. Today my work is in collections from Maine to Colorado and has been shown, sold, and garnered awards in competitive exhibitions in Indiana, Colorado, Texas, and California. As part of my continuing education, I look at a lot of paintings and I would have to say that I am influenced somehow by just about everything I see. Some of it is positive and some of it is negative, but all of it helps me to define my direction. Various Mediums Steve Dodge Website: https://dodgestudios.com/ 25

31 I am a country girl, always have been and always will be. I just happen to be a country girl whose life revolves around art. Painting is all I have ever wanted to do for as long as I can remember even though life's roads sometimes lead me other places. I spent many hours following my dad around our 4,000 acre ranch and not just as an onlooker either, but helping Daddy work cattle, build pens and fences, baling hay, clearing land, hunting, fishing, swimming, and just enjoying life. Those were the things I loved doing. The outdoors was my world, and it instilled in me a deep love of the land, which I am told comes through in my paintings. I got married at an early age and my husband and I both attended college and received our degrees. He became a coach, and I became a teacher, putting my love of art on the back shelf to help earn a living and to raise our three children, Mark, Marsha, and Craig. There wasn't much time for art raising three children, being a coach's wife, teaching, and being involved in church and all the other extracurricular activities involving our family. I primarily taught art and math in middle school during my 18 years of teaching. My school district participated in the Houston Livestock Show & Rodeo School Art Program where I met the artist who was to be a major influence on my art. I had been searching for someone to study with who was really good in art. SOUTHWEST ART had done an article on Bob Wygant featuring him on their cover. I did not even know who he was, but I loved his paintings. I had read the article a number of times and underlined many things in it. I looked him up in the Houston phone directory, but never had the nerve to call to see if I could study with him. I guess God had providentially planned for our paths to cross because Bob was one of the judges at our local Houston Livestock School Art show. He looked at some of my paintings and invited me to participate in one of his workshops. I think he saw in those early paintings a desire and love of subject matter. That was the beginning of many hours of instruction and direction that eventually opened many doors for me. After a few years of studying with Bob and eighteen years of teaching, my parents retired from ranching turning my half of the ranch and cattle over to my husband and me. My desire to become a full-fledged artist and having the ranch to fall back on enabled me to quit teaching and devote full time to my art. This was a dream come true for me. I believe God instilled this deep desire in me and has given me the talent to go along with it plus opening up doors along the way. I am often told that my paintings leave the viewers with a peaceful feeling. I believe that my feelings and love for what I paint shows in my paintings. I don't know how this passion flows through my brushes onto my canvases, but it does. Somehow my passion for art shows through my work. I have many people tell me they can see and feel it. I was born and raised in Southeastern Idaho, as a fourth generation native of the American West. Graduating from Utah State University in illustration and working as a freelance illustrator, I evolved as a fine art oil and watercolor painter. Commonly portraying figurative imageries, my painterly, realistic paintings have received numerous awards as they have been exhibited in international, national, regional and state juried, invitational, group and two person exhibits. My subject matter, color and style are a very personal, intuitive part of who I am since I discovered art at the age of twelve. I enjoy working with figurative imagery, although more and more, I am examining landscape and often combine the two. I love observing people, especially children as I wish to see the world anew through their eyes. I am most interested in small everyday moments often missed or seemingly unimportant compared to the social and headline grabbing events of the world. In a very painterly and vigorous approach, I brush shapes of broken color defining the form and composition that I have in mind. I work from photographs I have taken on one of many research trips or hire models. I build the surface with color and textural subtleties in contrast to the strong light and dark patterns I am fond of using. Although an admirer of impressionism, I do not consider myself a true impressionist. I enjoy working with the impressions of light and color but also want to narrate a story or idea to capture a moment in life. My intention is for those who view my work to not only see the color, value, composition and all of the other requirements of a great painting but to also share a definite feeling or memory of the timeless human drama represented. My Mission Statement is this: 'If there is anything virtuous, lovely, or of good report or praiseworthy; I seek after those things.'
