A4 GUIDANCE COUNSELING PROGRAM

The TCA guidance program is aimed at facilitating the faithful stewardship of our
students. Undoubtedly, none of the services listed below will be offered either
as skillfully or as completely as the need will demand; but as with the few
loaves and fishes, it is our confidence that our Lord can bless little and make it
satisfy much.

Paul said, "It is required in stewards that one be faithful," and identified his own
"ambition . . . to be well pleasing to Him." These summarize the goal of our
TCA guidance program. The direct and indirect services below describe the
specific efforts and activities we seek to provide to achieve these important
ends.

DIRECT SERVICES

Individual Counseling - Students who wish to discuss some concern about a
personal or interpersonal matter are given the opportunity to arrange to
see the counselor. Teachers, parents, or administrators may also refer
students for counseling.

Family and Group Counseling and Guidance - Family or student groups
with concerns relating to personal and interpersonal matters, test
interpretation, career guidance, etc. meet together when it is scripturally
appropriate, and when it seems that achieving our immediate purpose will
be aided. Family counseling and therapy are often referred to other
Christian counseling agencies (see Referral Services).

Consultation, Communication, and Cooperation with other School
Personnel - Faithful stewardship can be best achieved as we wait upon
the Lord, and use our spiritual gifts in a cooperative, coordinated manner.
The guidance counselor facilitates this goal by discussion and
consultation with school personnel. When information about student
growth is significant, it is shared with teachers, parents, and
administrators (within the limits of confidentiality).

Orientation - At major points where adjustments to newness or major changes
can be made more smoothly for students, new teaching staff, or parents,
orientation services are provided or coordinated by guidance counselor.

INDIRECT SERVICES

Pupil Assessment - to make disciples who are faithful stewards, it is critical
that both the school and the student receive an accurate and
comprehensive picture of individual student growth. Guidance work
involves a significant role in evaluation, recommending and administrating
assessment instruments as well, or insuring the appropriate use of the

information gathered. Our developmental program of testing is designed
with increasing sophistication throughout the eighth through twelfth grade
to:

1. Widen awareness of career options in the world of work.

2. Give students data for building an accurate self-knowledge for
stewardship of their talents.

3. Point individual students in the directions they may need to go to
develop specific competencies related to career stewardship.

Informational Resources - Teachers, parents, and students need to have
available to them information relating to post high school education and
training, financial assistance, scholarship opportunities, and career and
employment opportunities. We seek to provide this in an organized and
understandable manner that is increasingly accessible. Some of our
strategies for providing guidance-related information are:

1. Library resources of printed and audiovisual materials.

2. Eleventh grade students and parent Career Planning seminar.

3. Financial aid seminars for twelfth grade students and their parents.

4. Christian and secular college catalogue resources.

5. Visits and displays at The Christian Academy by Christian college
personnel.

6. Promotion of Christian College Fairs.

Pupil Records - Guidance workers assist in the collection, maintenance, and
distribution of student records. They are available for the interpretation to
persons eligible to see them.

Placement - We provide help for course selection, post high school work, and
educational guidance and placement, as well as help for gathering
relevant information and for scheduling job interviews.

Parental and Pastoral Involvement - Efforts are made to keep parents and
pastors informed of our stewardship goals and methods, and to include
them in specific guidance activities.

Referral Services - The Christian Academy has access to a Christian
psychologist for any psychological services teachers and parents deem
appropriate. The counselor and psychologist seek to complement one

another's ministries. Much of the special testing requested by parents
and teachers are done by the psychologist. As a service to the Christian
community, other referral sources with a Christian commitment and
Biblical practice are recommended as needed or requested.

Research and Evaluation - The usefulness of our Career Stewardship
Development program for the contemporary world of work is determined
by scriptural principles and practical relevance to the needs of our
students. Systematic evaluation and ongoing research are integrally
related to our guidance program to continually strengthen the validity of
our efforts. Studies of past graduates and of current school programs are
used for increasing effectiveness of The Christian Academy guidance
program.

A6

Board-Administration Relations

The School Board believes that the legislation of policies is the most important
function of a school board and that the execution of the policies should be the
function of the administration.

Delegation by the Board of powers to the administration provides freedom for
them to manage the school within the Board’s policies and allows the Board to
devote its time to policy making and appraisal functions.

The Board holds the administration responsible for carrying out its policies within
established guidelines and for keeping the Board informed about school
operations.

Adopted: July 21, 1998

A7

Probationary Period for New Students

The faculty and staff of the Christian Academy recognizes the tremendous
adjustments that exist for any new student. Attending a new school with all of
the accompanying adjustments can be traumatic for any student. It is for that
reason all new students are accepted on a probationary basis. In so doing this
allows faculty and staff to monitor the progress of new students for early
detection of any difficulties they may experience.

Length of the probationary period shall generally last for the duration of the first
marking period. However, length of probation may vary depending on the
assessment of the administration.

It must be recognized that students are accepted into the Academy in ‘good faith’
that all information provided on the application is as complete and accurate as
possible. If it has been determined that information provided to the school during
the application process was either false or incomplete, it is possible that the
student may be asked to withdraw from the school.

As evidenced by our mission statement, it is our desire as a Christian school to
work together with Christian parents in fulfilling their God-given responsibility of
educating their child(ren). Enabling TCA to fulfill its mission is greatly hindered
when incomplete or false information, necessary to the appropriate placement of
the student, has been given.
