2 Hi,
I couldn’t get the time to see you this whole week. Please make a list of at least ten interesting Sci-fi
films that can be screened during the English Language Week at the end of the month. I would like students
who watch the films to write some reviews so they can learn values and language at the same time. I think
you should browse the Internet for the films and you can get a friend to help you make the selection. If
possible, may I have the list by this coming Monday? Then, we can sit and discuss to choose the best three
as we do not have much time left.
Happy viewing!

Hi,
Hope you and everyone in the family are doing well. I’m fine but a bit busy with the preparations for

2 the District Level English Debate to be held in my school.
It’s the rainy season and I can’t help feeling worried about mother during this kind of weather as her

However, do not forget to do your own revision for PT3 and ask Maria to do the same even though
she’s not sitting for any major exam this year.
Lastly, please inform me of mother’s health from time to time. I’m grateful to you for being there to
watch her. See you soon, goodbye.

Dear friend,
How are you? It’s been some time since we wrote to each other. I feel great and hope that you are
well, too. For your information, I’m now back in school after the summer holidays.
I went to a summer camp which was held at a cattle ranch. I had the chance to experience some of
the activities carried out on ranches. One of them was being taken to see the grazing cattle. There were
hundreds of them. Some other activities we did were fishing at a nearby lake, learning how to ride a
horse, cycling on rough paths and watching a rodeo.
Most of the participants live in the city so we were first-timers in everything. I thought fishing was
a bit boring when you had to sit and wait. However, it felt fantastic when I caught a very big fish! The
rodeo is an annual event where people turn up to see the best cowboy-the one who can stay on a wild
bull the longest.
Nevertheless, I had a really enjoyable time there. I think it has helped me to become more confident
and independent. Now, I feel I can make friends more easily compared to before I attended the camp.
I am also able to scramble eggs and make French toast for breakfast.
Please share with me what you did during your school holidays. We live in different countries so
the activities are certainly not the same. Looking forward to hearing from you soon. Goodbye.
Yours sincerely,

C Homophones

Homophones are words in the English language that have the same sound, but they are spelled
differently. Likewise, the meanings of these words are also different.

Examples
1. Lucy (blue, blew) the candles on the cake after she made a birthday wish.

The context or situation in the sentence is about Lucy’s birthday. The clues are candles, cake, and birthday
wish. All these tell you that you have to choose a word that describes an action. The answer cannot be
blue because it describes colour. So it must be blew, which is the past tense of the action, blow.

2. Serena is not feeling well. She looks (pail, pale)

The context or situation in the sentence is about Serena. The clues are not feeling well and looks. The
clues tell you that you have to choose a word that describes Serena’s condition. The answer cannot be
pail because it is an object. So it must be pale, which describes the condition of a person’s face.

common to use “as – as” in a simile. It is rather easy to remember a simile as you only need to
recall the distinct qualities connected to the things, animals or people mentioned.

Example:

• Sugar or honey is known for its sweetness. Hence, the simile, as sweet as sugar or as
sweet as honey.

• A lion is known to be a brave animal. Hence, the simile, as brave as a lion.
• A miser is known to be a stingy person. Hence, the simile, as stingy as a miser.

The words used to make the comparisons with the things, animals or people are known as adjectives.
