You received a letter from your friend who was once your neighbour, inviting you to her brother’s
wedding. Write a reply of acceptance or refusal to her invitation. 4.1.4, 4.2.1

Hello Kelly, Hello Azura,
It’s been some time since we wrote to each
other. How are things? I’m well and so is my
family. Mother sends her love.
It’s a great relief that the final exam was just
over last week. I had a hectic schedule before the
exam because I had to practise for the district
chess competition and also doing my revisions. I
also missed a number of classes when I went out
for the competitions at the school level. Although
I did not win but I gained experience as well as
making some new friends from other schools.
Anyway, I’m writing to invite you to my house
during the December school holidays. Remember,
Aliff, my elder brother? He’s getting married to a
girl from Melaka. The ceremony at the bride’s
house will be on 2nd December, whereas ours
will be held on the 9th. If you can come a week
earlier, you can join us to go to Melaka. I’m sure
you and I will have a great time together. Your
family is also invited as Mother will send the
invitation card later.
I think I’ll stop writing for now. Just hope that
you can have the time to attend the wedding so
we can meet again. Looking forward to hearing
from you, soon. Good bye.

Your friend,
Azura
Your friend,
Kelly

A You are going to read an article about an illusionist. For questions 1 to 8, choose the correct
answer (A, B, C or D). 3.1.2

1 David Blaine White was born on 4th April, 1973. He has grown
to become an American illusionist, endurance artist and extreme
performer. He is best known for his high-profile feats of endurance.
Born and raised in Brooklyn, New York, Blaine’s lifelong interest
in magic was sparked at the age of four when he saw a magician
performing magic in the subway. When he performs, he has made a
slight change in the way magic is shown on television. What he has
done is giving the focus onto the reactions of the spectators instead of the performer. He would try
new feats to be screened live in front of his audiences as to provide them unforgettable experience
that can be both shocking and fascinating.
2 Blaine’s first television special, David Blaine: Street Magic was aired On May 19, 1997 on NBC.
He might have started his magic with performing cards but later, appeared with death defying acts
in his shows. His first stunt was “Buried Alive,” where he was entombed in a plastic box placed
underground, beneath a three ton water tank for seven days with no food and little water. Blaine
has performed many other stunts and series of jaw-dropping magic effects. Among which are stunts
called, Frozen in Time, Vertigo, Dive of Death and Drowned Alive.

3 David began on his first Live tour, travelling and entertaining unsuspecting pedestrians
throughout the country. In one of the shows, “Beyond Magic,” telecast on a TV channel, David
Blaine could be seen on video nearly killing himself as he shoots a bullet into his own throat during
a stunt that has gone wrong. Despite the incident, Blaine said that he has been performing that trick
since 2010.
4 Blaine may not be the richest magician in the world but he has his share in contributing to
charity. For example, at one of his shows for charity on January 15, 2010, Blaine performed “Magic
for Haiti”, a performance lasting 72 hours which raised almost US$100,000. The fund was meant
for Haiti earthquake relief centre. He also donated two $1 Million Tesla Coils for charity after
performing a massive electricity stunt.
5 Ever wonder how Blaine is able to perform all those stunts? Most probably there will be no one
who are willing to do them except for Blaine himself.

Subject : Preparing Dinner for Your Little Brother

Dear Arshad,
How are you? I would like to give you some suggestions about preparing dinner for your
little brother. You may consider getting a takeaway from the hawker centre a stone’s throw away

from your house. The hawker centre is famous for its wide range of food. I’m sure you will be
spoilt for choice when you get there. If you have a transport problem, you may consider ordering

a takeaway online with the apps such as Food Panda or Grab Food. The service providers will
have your dinner delivered to your doorstep at only RM5 delivery fee. I hope my suggestions
are helpful. Bye!

Subject : Advice to Help Your Brother

Hi,

How are you? I know it’s heart-breaking to see your brother taking the wrong path in his life.
I would like to give you some advice to help your brother to get back on track. More often than
not, teenagers pick up negative habits to seek attention. So, I think your family and you should

spend more time talking to your brother so that you can understand what is going on in his life.
Besides, you should organise more family activities such as a day trip or a dinner in a restaurant
to develop a close rapport among your family members. In this way, your brother is more likely to

listen to your advice as he knows his family loves him more than anyone else in the world. I hope
my advice is helpful. Bye!

Hi,

How are you? I’m impressed that you plan to start a joint venture with your cousin. In my
opinion, this is a good idea as it will expose you to the world of business. Therefore, you will learn

how to control costs while maximising your profits. This set of skills are very important and useful
when you grow up in future. Besides, while doing business, you will learn how to communicate
and interact with different customers. As a result, your communication skills will be improved. In

addition, you will brush up your language skills too as you need to write and speak clearly when
you are promoting certain products to your customers. I hope my opinion is helpful. Bye!

Hi,
How are you? I know you are now caught between a rock and hard place because both
physical tuition class and online tuition class have their pros and cons. I would like to put my two

cents in. If you join online tuition class, you can avoid other students and therefore social distancing
will not be a problem anymore. However, you will feel frustrated when the internet connection is

unstable. On the other hand, although practising social distancing is difficult for physical tuition
class, you can reduce the risk by joining a tuition class with fewer students. Besides, it is more
convenient for teachers to give you their feedback as they can observe you directly in physical class.

So, I think you should continue going to your physical tuition classes as they are more effective
than online tuition classes. I hope my opinions are helpful. Bye!

Hi,

How are you? I know it’s hard to choose which college to go to after SPM. I would like to put in
my two cents. Both local colleges and colleges abroad have their pros and cons. For local colleges,

the tuition fees are affordable. Besides, you can go back to your home easily and frequently.
However, you might feel bored as your surroundings are not much different and your life is pretty
much the same. On the other side of the coin, the tuition fees are exorbitant if you choose to study

abroad. In addition, the living expenses are high too. However, you will get to experience foreign

Hi,
How are you? I would like to give you some suggestions on how to improve your writing

skills. As the old saying goes, all roads lead to Rome. You can improve your writing skills through
a number of methods. First, you should pick up the habit of reading. Reading allows you to
widen your vocabulary. Besides, you will learn different expressions through reading. This

knowledge will come in handy when you are writing. In addition, you should always practise
writing, then show your work to your teachers for feedback. When your teachers are giving you

live in a dirty environment every day. I would like to give you some suggestions on how to tackle
this problem. First, you may put up a big notice board beside the roads to remind the residents
that it is illegal to throw their rubbish there. Next, you may also inform the local council of the

situation so that they can dispatch the law enforcement officers to your neighbourhood to monitor
the situation. Lastly, you may also request the local council to clean up the mess so that all of the

residents in your neighbourhood can live in a comfortable environment. I hope my suggestions
