PASTIME DURING THE PANDEMIC
The COVID-19 pandemic has increased anxiety and stress in people. Some people
have lost their jobs; others have worked from home and many are kept away
from school. Being locked down can have negative effects on health. Negative
thoughts, anxiety and fear have caused some people to experience mental health
problem.
It is at this time that hobbies play a vital role in helping people to cope with
stress. Having something to put energy into can help to ease the stress on the
mind and body. It helps develop creativity and bring cheer to oneself and
others. Baking and cooking for example can be satisfying because one can
share the food with others. Learning a new musical instrument for example
can help to lift the spirit. These activities can make one feel calm and relaxed,
thus improving mental health.
Perfection is not the goal at this time. It is not how well you paint that matters. It
is how the hobby helps to make you feel more at peace with yourself. Taking up
a hobby helps to take care of the mental health by taking your mind away from
the depressing situation. It also gives you a sense of direction during the difficult
time.

Volunteering and service to the community is important during a pandemic. Social distancing does not mean

UNSUNG HEROES
We know by now that keeping our hands clean is crucial to keep the
coronavirus away. 1. D Have you ever thought of people whose
job requires them to get their hands dirty ? While we celebrate
and thank our healthcare workers for their sacrifice, let us not forget the waste collectors who keep our place
clean every day, pandemic or not.
Even in non-pandemic times, waste management workers face a great challenge handling waste. This
situation is more challenging during the pandemic. 2. A During this period of time uncollected
waste can host the virus and speed up the spread of the disease . Thus, while people stay home to work
in order to stay safe, these workers risk their lives by collecting and disposing the waste we create so that
others can live comfortably.
While we work on keeping the family safe by leaving our garbage outside, let us spare a thought for these
frontline workers who risk their lives for us. Have a heart. 3. C Let us give some thought to these
people when we throw waste . Dispose waste in a way that minimizes the risk to the workers who collect
it. Before you throw disposable gloves or masks take a second to think of the waste collector. Have you done
your part to minimize the risk to the workers who collect them?
