walks of life to such an extent that computer and information literacy has become the
fundamental part of our daily activities. Computer Science is now an essential addition
to the school curriculum at all levels.
Vedanta Let's Log in (A course in Computer Science) is a series of ten books on
Computer Science for basic and secondary level students, designed for the need of new
generation to help acquire knowledge on the theory, application and programming
aspects of computing. This series is based on the new syllabus of Computer Science,
designed and approved as per the curriculum prescribed by Curriculum Development
Center, Ministry of Education, Government of Nepal.
The series covers the history of computer, its accessories, applications and programming
in LOGO and QBASIC in a step-by-step and graded manner following logical and
scienti ic approach. Concept of graphic and web design is also illustrated with many
practical examples. This series not only assists the students and the teachers in the
class but also incorporates latest information and developments in IT with the present
need of the students in Nepal. It also provides other enthusiasts and learners with the
skill and knowledge to cope up with the growing demand of IT skills in market and
daily life.
We earnestly hope that the students would ind the journey through this series an
enjoyable experience and gain a sound working knowledge on the basic aspects of

1 Knowing the Computers
Computer is a calcula ng device. It calculates our data at a very high
speed. It is an electronic device because it requires electricity.
It obeys commands and makes our work easier and faster. It transforms
our data into meaningful informa on.
Any computer essen ally performs three basic func ons. They are:
Input, Process, and Output
Computer needs data and we provide it with data. It is called input.
Computer calculates the data and it is called process.
Computer returns the result a er processing our data. It is called output.
Input Process Output
So, computer helps us to enter data (input), process it, gives result
(output), and also stores data for future use.
Computer can do many jobs, such as, calcula ng your data, drawing
pictures, watching movies and cartoons, listening music, playing games
and preparing le ers, etc.

Types of Computers
Computers are available in different shapes and sizes.
Desktop Computers
These computers can be placed on desk.
Therefore, they are called desktop computers.
Desktop computers are mostly used in offices
and house.
Laptop Computer
These computers are placed on our lap while
using. Therefore, they are called laptop
computers. We can easily carry laptop
computers from one place to another.
Tablet
It is smaller than laptop and very useful
to do many kind of works like other
computers.
Main Points to Remember
- Computer is an electronic calcula ng device.
- Computer can do a variety of jobs.
- The three basic func ons of Computer are Input, Process, and
Output.
- The data we give to the computer is Input.
- Calcula ng the data is Process.
- Computer gives us result. It is called Output.
- Computer stores our data to use in future.
- Different types of computer are desktop, laptop, and tablet
computers.

2Lesson Computers and Human
Beings
Who made computers? Of Course, we, human beings!
We, have made computer to make our work easier and faster.
If humans are not smart, how can they create a smart thing like a
computer? Definitely, humans are smarter than computers but there are
so many things that a computer can do more easily and quickly than we
can.
Let’s find out some similari es and differences between computers and
human beings.
vedanta Let's Log in (A course in Computer Science) Book 3 10
Similarities:
Computers and human beings both have many different parts. They do
their different works using different parts.
Then, what is the difference between a computer and a
human being?
Differences:
Speed
Computer works very fast. It does millions of calcula ons in just one
second, but human beings cannot do.
Accuracy
Computer does not make any mistakes. Remember, you have to give
correct data to your computer. As, human beings, we may make mistakes
in larger calcula ons.
11 vedanta Let's Log in (A course in Computer Science) Book 3
Versa le
Computer is a versa le machine. You can do many
kind of tasks, such as typing, playing, and drawing.
For us, it is difficult to do many types of works.
Diligence
Computer never gets red or feels
bored. It does the same work
con nuously for a long me. We get
red a er working for some me
and need some rest. We also feel
bored, if we repeat the same work.
Remember
Computer has a huge memory and it can remember many things. It can
easily pick out the stored informa on from its storage device. But, we
may not be able to remember everything.
Instruc on
Computers always follow instruc ons
correctly. However, some mes, we might
forget how to do our work correctly.
vedanta Let's Log in (A course in Computer Science) Book 3 12
Do you think computer is be er than human being?
i) Computer cannot do anything on its own. It needs proper instruc on
from us.
ii) A human being has intelligence while computer does not. If you give
wrong instruc ons to the computer, it gives you wrong result.
iii) A human being can think and make own decisions. But computer
cannot think and make its own decisions.
iv) A human being has feeling and emo ons but computer does not
have.
So, computer can only provide support to humans to do their work fast,
easily, and correctly. Computer cannot replace human beings.
Main Points to Remember
- Human beings have made computers to do their work easily and
fast.
- Computer works very fast.
- Computer does not make any mistakes.
- Computer can do many kind of tasks.
- Computer never gets red or feels bored.
- Computer can remember many things.
- Computer always follows instruc ons correctly.
- Computer does not have its own intelligence.
- Computer provides support to human beings.
- Computer cannot replace human beings.

Computer is a human-made electronic machine. It plays a very important
role in our society. Computers can be used in most of the fields to make
work easier and faster. They can do different types of work. So, you can see
computers almost everywhere like in schools for teaching, in airports and
railways for cket reserva on, and in hospitals, banks, offices, markets,
and industries for effec ve opera on of the organiza ons.
Let’s have a quick look at some of the places where computers are being
used.

Lesson HARDWARE AND
SOFTWARE
4
HARDWARE
We have studied about different types of devices as well as various
important parts of computer. Different devices perform different works.
All the parts of the computer which we have studied so far can be touched
with our hands. They are the physical parts: they have some shape and
size. All the parts of a computer that we can see, touch, and feel are
called Hardware.
All the input devices, the output devices, processing devices, and storage
devices are hardware because we can touch and feel it.
Input Device
The devices which are used to enter data and instruc ons to
computer are called input devices. Some examples of input devices
are keyboard and mouse.
Keyboard Mouse CPU
Processing Device:
The device that calculates our data is called processing device.
The processing unit in computer is called the Central Processing
Unit (CPU).
27 vedanta Let's Log in (A course in Computer Science) Book 3
Output Device:
The devices from which the computer returns result to us are
called output devices. Monitor and Printer are the most common
output devices.
Monitor Printer
Storage Device
The device in which you can store your file is called storage
device. Pen Drive, Hard Disk, and DVD are common storage
device.
DVD Hard Disk Pen Drive
SOFTWARE
So ware tells hardware what to do and how to do. We cannot
see or touch so ware. So ware is a set of instruc ons so that
your computer exactly knows the work to complete.
Without so ware, hardware cannot do anything.
Some Examples of so ware are Windows 10, Paint, Notepad,
Tux Paint, Tux Typing, and the like.
vedanta Let's Log in (A course in Computer Science) Book 3 28
Main Points to Remember
- Computer system is the combina on of hardware and
so ware.
- We can classify hardware into 4 main groups:
i) Input Devices: (to receive data)
ii) Processing Devices: (to calculate data)
iii)Output Devices: (to provide result)
iv) Storage Devices: (to store data)
- So ware is a set of instruc ons given to the hardware.
- Without so ware, hardware cannot do anything.
