Craziness Helps Cross Country Runners
Pride and "insanity" keep cross country runners going when
the pain gets unbearable. Be,ing "a little crazy" does help a cross
country runner who presses on despite physical pain, dizziness,
and psychological barriers to complete a two mile course.
This year Mary Ann McAuliffe was the only girl on the team.
"South doesn't have a sanctioned girls' cross country team so I
have to run with the guys!" said Mary Ann, "I run the same five
to eight miles at practice as they do. Sometimes I think I'm crazy
to be running with these guys."
Depsite this year's 1-9 season, six members of the team said
they would return to the sport next year.
Junior MaryAnn McAuliffe'
was the only female on the
team.

Coach Beran watches style and form. "South has a tradition of quality gymnasts," accord-
ing to coach Richard Beran. However South has had dif-
ficulty upholding the tradition this year.
The team ended the season with six wins, five losses
and second place in Metro and District.
Five team members went to State individually, yet
the total team score ranked fourth.
Bob Harrison, one of the two returning seniors this
year, had one of the highest vaulting scores in the state,
a 9.4. He also placed at state.
In the past years, several of South's gymnasts have
received the all-American Gymnasts honors. This year
Bob Harrison and Jeff Hartung carried on the.tradition.
The fine gymnasts have carried out many traditions
and Coach Beran feels honored to have been a part of
these traditions.

Gymnast~ Carry on Vau!ting Tradition
A tradition at South is always having a girls' gymnastics team that shows a lot of talent. This years' team is holding
up the tradition by showing strong points in vaulting. When asked what the teams strongest point is, Katy Couch
replied, "We are strongest in vaulting. Tina Vasquez helps a lot. She averages about 8.0 and has good pre-flight
action."
This year South's team has a freshman, Donna Zeleny, competing for them. Donna is a student at Indian Hills J r.
High. Katy Couch also remarked, "I think it is good for Donna and the team both. It helps build our team and gives
Donna experience for her coming years on South's gymnastic team."
At the Papillion Invitational, South placed tenth as a team. Individually, Cindy Kilborn placed fourth on beam. Katy
Couch has been placing in all-around, and Tina Vasquez and Donna Zeleny have been scoring high on va !!lting.

Northwest. Doug Greenwald was the team leader and
concluded his senior season with consecutive runner-up

Roncalli, they also outscored Bryan by

Smaller 9wim Teams Put Forth Effort
Boy's swim team this year
was one of the smaller teams
South has had in several
years. According to Coach
Wayne Boldt, "Even though
it was small, it was one of the
best teams as far as overall
quality of the individual
members. The seniors this
year also helped give the
team a lot of support."
Miss Pattie Hopkins, girl's
swim coach, commented,
"The number of meets won
basically did not reflect the
team effort put forth." Th-is
was Miss Hopkins' first year
coaching and teaching. The
team proved to be better
than Abraham Lincoln and
tied against Benson.

a tough team. Judy Janousek had
the highest scoring game this year
with 28 points against Ryan. A win

the most exciting game. Coach

J.V. Girls Gain Much Experience
Junior Varsity Girls' basketball
I players had only one win this year,
but gained much experience by
learning many new plays and tech-

helped. Junior Varsity's only win
was against Duchesne. They won by
twelve points. Sandra Watson, a
junior this year, had the best offen-
sive game with fifteen points
against Duchesne. Loreta Naikeis,
a sophomore team member, had
this to say about the season, "Even
though we didn't really win a lot of

Varsity Team Keeps Gaining Experience
South's Varsity Wrestling team is quite young
with only one experienced senior, John Patrick.
Tony Bravo and Jim Heinz, two sophomores, have
placed well individually in the five invitationals
the team has attended.
Captain John Patrick placed third at the Metro
Wrestling Tournament beld the I8th-19th of Jan-
uary at the University of Nebraska at Omaha.
He's only lost two duals which enables him to hold
the best record of the team : 17 wins and 7 losses.
The annual South-Bryan invitational was held
the I3th-14th of December 1979 with 18 teams
attending, South placing 14th in this competition.
Coach Beauford Hailzip said, "The team is

Short People Roam Halls;
Being Little May Be a·Plus
The song "Short People," by Randy Newman, was directed to the
shorter proportion of I978's society. When this song was written, it
was not meant to be a "putdown" but many people took it that way.
Some of the shorter South High students were asked what advan-
tages and disadvantages there a re to being short. Mike St ilen, (4'8" )
says, "I can party anyone under the table." Ruth Whitten, (5' ) com-
mented "You can crawl through windows easier if you're locked out of
the house. You're the last one to feel the rain and the first one to feel
the flobd." Alesia Benton, (5') muttered, "Being small has a I ot of advantages, you can get into movies at childrens'
prices. Some guys like short girls because it makes them feel superior. Ronalee Jenness, (4' I I" ) commented, "There
are quite a few things that a short person is not capable of doing but I don't pay attention to those things."

Marquee Is News - 8eel
One of the many jobs Student Council handles is taking care of the
Marquee on the lawn in front of South High. By doing this, they communi-
cate the "whens, wheres and whats" of South High students who ar.e
involved in school activities. .
This year five student council members comprise the Marquee Com-
mittee. Members of the committee are chairman Bill Miller, who organ-
izes the committee and makes sure the work gets done properly; Kevin
Abelein, John Chandler, Tom Hawley and Scott Knight are also mem-
bers.
Each Monday morning, whether rain or shine, the group meets to discuss what activities are going on that week and
what should be said on the marquee. A#er the discussing is done, Kevin, John, Tom and Scott split into tw_ggroups:
one group putting them up on the marquee and one group sorting out the letters. .
Each week the members alternate groups so they have a chance to perform different.duties.
0
John Chandler, one of the committee members said, "It is an excellent way of communicating news of special activ-
ities to the Student Body. "According to past records the marquee was presented to the school in June of 1966 by the
Future Engineers, a club at that time. The marquee is here, and being used from year to year, communicating to .the
students the "whens, wheres and whats" of South High activities.

Seniors Careers Undecided?
South High Seniors find the time for making deci-
sions about the future drawing near. Some may
already know the careers they wish to go in to, others
must still decide. College could be the answer for
many students. Colleges can offer programs to make
students more aware of the job opportunities open
to them. When considering college, however, one
must take into consideration the costs of today's col-
lege education. If planning to go out of state, one
must be aware of the additional costs of living
expenses. Financial help is available for most stu-
dents.through government loans and scholarship pro-
grams. Pictured below is a chart showing the current
costs of different colleges.

Rosemann's: Two for One!
Twins are the shared bond for Kevin and Kris
Rosemann. Born on January 3, 1962 with Kris the
older of the two. Kris fills her spare time with activi-
ties such as swimming, water skiing, hiking and tennis.
Her plans for the future include attending college
and receiving a degree in business as a medical sec-
retary.
Kevin has been active in school activities his last
three years at South. He has participated in basket-
ball and football, both the J.V. and Varsity squads.
He is also the President of the Senior Class of 1980.
His plans for the future include attending U.N.O . or
U.N .L. and majoring in the field of science.
What is it like being a twin? When little they were
always dressed alike and introduced as "This is Kevin
and Kris, they're twins." But they both agreed that /
having a twin can be an advantage "because there iy
a sense of protection and pride involved, and there
is a bond between the two which is much stronger
than betwee n just brothers and sisters."
