Meet new singing group:
the Gospel Choir

II I I South High's Gospel Choir was formed in
December of 1993, right before the winter break.
Begun by staff members Ms. Darlene Brown,
Ms. Charnella Mims, Ms. Celeste Bibbs, l'y'lrs. Norma
Houser-Reynolds and Ms. Helene Williams, the
group was started to involve students in an
alternative form of music.
"We felt a demand for it," said Ms. Brown.
"The group was formed by interested students, not
necessarily those already in a musical group here at
South ."
The idea for the group came when Ms. Mims
and Ms. Brown saw a gospel choir from another high
school perform at a banquet a couple of years ago
and thought, "We can do that!"
Helping to conduct the choir were Rev.
Dwayne Holmes of Saint Mark Baptist Church and
Rev. Ray Terrell of Salem Baptist Church.
The choir performed at several different
occasions during the year including the XEROX
banquet, Sound-Off, Bancroft Elementary School
anfd the South High parents' meeting.
The group wears black dresses or pants with
a silver scarf. "We chose this because of the
availability of the material," said Ms. Brown .

'Hit Men' start season
strong, but fall short

"This team is one of the better teams that I
have coached. I believe that we should finish in the
top one-third of our league," said Mr. Richard Benak,
the coach of the Packer Hit-Men Volleyball Team.

In case people haven't heard there is a
men's volleyball team at South High School. They
practice on Mondays and play on Tuesdays and

Packers win season
opener against Central

The varsity baseball started its season with a
victory against the Central High · Eagles, but
struggled to keep winning as they suffered six
losses out of the next eight games.

This year's team is experienced as only four
players from last year's team did not return. "This
helped us a lot because we have so much
experience playing together," said junior catcher
' Chris Pease. "We also have a lot of experience with
varsity pitching," he added.

If we cut down on errors in the latter part of .
1 the season, we will have a good chance of winning

Districts and going on to the State Tournament," said
second baseman Andy Hunter, a senior. The State
Tournament was set for May 18 through 20.

Coached by Mr. Mario Remijio, the team
worked to improve its hitting. "Our pitching is our
strongest point," said Hunter, "but we need work on
our hitting."

Junior back-up catcher Robert Tkaczuk said,

\ "This is my first year on varsity and it's a lot more
demanding than JV. You have to be a lot more
focused."
About the team, Tkaczuk added, "I think to
improve as a team we need to improve our hitting
and our defense in the last innings. We've lost
games in the late innings."

Girls' soccer team winS
Central Invitational

South High soccer teams reached a new
level of play this year. For the first time in Packer
history, the South High girls' soccer team won the
Central Invitational which was held April 22 and 23.

"We have had a really great year," said head
coach Mrs. Lisa Giambattista. "For the first time we've
had enough girls out for the team that we could have
a J.V. team."

The J.V. team, coached by Mr. Ernie Foster,
was undefeated at press time.

Sophomore Donna Nowaczyk said, "Our
team is so much better than last year. We are actually
scoring some goals!"

The boys' team started slowly, but picked up
steam as the season progressed.

Coached by Mr. Robert Kaufm~n. the team
had only three returning players from last year. "The
team is very young, but learning fast and playing
hars," he said.

A high point of the season came when

..Felipe Rangel scored two points against Thomas

Jefferson to give the Packers their first victory.

Carlos Enriquez practices

Boys' golf team uses
season for rebuilding

The boys golf team is rebuilding this year,
and the future is looking bright. Coached by Miss
Holly Rogers, physical education teacher, the team
has posted a promising 1-2 record in dual meets so
far.

The team is very you'ng, with no seniors and
three returning golfers from last year's team. Some
team members haven't picked up a set of golf clubs
until this year, according to Ms. Rogers. But with
such a young team, there is a great deal of
competition with in the team. Players compete every
week to be in the top five who make up the Varsity

team.
"We've started out really well," says Coach

Rogers. The team posted their best team score in
four years at the AL-TJ invitational this year. At press
time, the team has three more home meets at Spring
Lake Park this year.
Coach Rogers will have a more experienced team
next year, and she also hopes for more enthusiasts
to become part of the team.

This year's golf team is made up by juniors
Eric Castro, Jeff Kohler, Brian Peterson, Josh
Preister, and Howard Starks; sophomores, Dan
Leutzinger and Don Stanek; and freshmen William
Stanley, iach Bojanski, and Vershan Luckett.
