world of work
T he MH-moderate students of
South High are very active in
the school. One of the activi-
ties which these students
maintain is the recycling of pop cans.
Throughout the school building one
will find collection bins which are peri-
odically emptied of cans which are
then sent to a recycling center. The
money made from this project goes to
pay for uniforms and fees for the Spe-
cial Olympics.
Every year the South High team par-
ticipates in the Special Olympics in
sports which include basketball, bowl-
ing, soccer and track and field.
Students in the ungraded classes
are also involved in the Just Friends
Club which is open to all the students
in the building and works to develop
social skills.
The students also work in the class-
room on academic skills such as writ-
ing, reading and mathematics. Daily,
the students leave the building and go
to a work site. One of these sites is
Godfather's Pizza where the students
clean and prepare for the opening of
the restaurant.

the students.
From the administrative staff, led by
Mr. Jerry Bartee in his first year as princi-

The teaching staff does not just put in
an eight-hour day and vanish at 3:15 p.m.
Most teachers assist in sponsoring clubs
and activities, coaching sports, attending
student functions, relating to parents and
providing friendship and support for stu-
dents.
Guidance in school, family, college

comes from the counselors.
Our support staff as custodians, secre-

Mr. Jerry Bartee becomes Principal
A s a young man, Jerry Bartee dreamed of being e
professional baseball player, not a high school prin
cipal, yet today he has accomplished both.
Leaving his position as Athletic Director, Mr. Bar·
tee is in his first year as Principal, taking over that job from Mrs
Joyce Christensen, who resigned to go back into elementary
school teaching.
Mr. Bartee graduated in 1966 from Omaha Central and from
there went to Creighton University.
Although he said that he likes his new job, Mr. Bartee admit·
ted that he missed the closer relationship he had with students
when he was Athletic Director.
According to the September issue of the South High Tooter,
Mr. Bartee claimed, "There is more responsibility to being Prin-
cipal and the job lasts longer. It is not uncommon for me to ar-
rive at 6:30 a.m. and stay until 6:00 p.m."
As far as his plans following his tenure as Principal, Mr. Bar·
tee said, "I have given some thought to being a teacher on the
college level or some other advanced educational level. For
right now, thought, I'm concentrating on running South High
School. This is a job I am really enjoying."
"My favorite part of this job is dealing with people. That's
when I'm happiest. I don't like staying back in my office," he
added.
