"Some Enchanted Evening" was the
theme of the 1967 Homecoming Coronat-
ion , prese nte d by the Student Council on
October 14 , in the school auditorium. Don-
ald Jaksich and Cheryl Sparano were
crowned king and quee n while Mary Lee
and Paul Bartunek were elected Miss Con-
ge niality and Mr. Congenial.

A dance following th e coronation was

Pep Club is an organization consisting of Kaus.
freshman, sophomore, junior, and senior girls. Their
activities include cheering for the major sports, such
as football, basketball, wrestling, gymnastics, and
swimming; attending pep rallies; and making banners
and posters to boost school spirit throughout the
year.

New red and white striped sweaters added
sparkling unity to the group and proved to be a
stimulant for increasing membership.

Being part of the Annual Staff
is a challenge to its members. They
find arranging for pictures to.. be taken,
making layouts, writing copy, and sell-
ing subscriptions are just a few tasks
they must do. But when all the work
is done the staff members feel that
being on the staff was both a valuable
and an enjoyable experience.

Computer Club is for those who
have a special interest in " Programming''.
One of the most important things the
members learn is to translate human
problems into machine language. The
programs are punched on I B M cards
with a key punch machine. Even
th ough it takes much hard work to run
this complicated machine, the members
enjoy learning how to operate the most
important machine of the future.

Chess Club Members
Improve Skill

"Chess is one of the more difficult and
exciting games popular today and I was con-
tinually amazed and pleased by the skill of
the club members," stated Mrs. Collins, Club
sponsor.

The purpose of chess is to help those
who wish to improve their proficiency in
one of the most enduring contests ever con-
ceived. The game combines the romance of
warfare and the precision of mathematics.

Sound Off Is qMod"

Sound Off '68 became part of the new
mod world. The performance entitled.
"Gone Mod", was directed by Mr.Johnson
and Mr. Biggs.

The production took place in the
school auditorium, November 16th, through
the 18th.

"I was very well pleased with this year's
performance. " It was great:" Mr. Johnson
stated.

Thespians Earn Points to Become Members

" It is an honor and a lot of fun to be in Thespians,"
stated Rande Devall, president of Thespians.

Thespians, a dramatic club is sponsored by Mrs.
Clara Ross and Mr. Robert Hahn.

To be in Thespians, a person must earn ten points.
These points can be earned by working, or starring in a
stage production presented at South. After a certain num-
ber of students receive these points, they are invited into
the club.

D.E.C.A. Students Gain Business
Skills

Members of D.E.C.A. strove to live up
to the four points of the club emblem - voca-
tional understanding, social intelligence, lead-
ership development, and civic consciousness.

During the past year they sold Santa
Mice, photo books, and other items for the
State Leadership Conference and Employee
and Employer Banquet. Co-ordinator of the
club is Mr. James Nebel.

"This is the largest this club has ever
been in several years," said Mrs.Yerkes,
sponsor, when she was discussing the events
of the Health Careers Club. A style show was
held in the school auditorium where mem-
bers acted as models. They also worked at
the N.S.E.A. Conve ntion, and visited the
children at Hattie B. Monroe about once a
month. At the Mothers' Tea, held in May,
pins for service we re awarded and the Future
Nurse of The Year was chosen.

Latin Club

Breaks Tradition

Latin Club held their banquet on
February 8, but with a different arrange-
ment. For the first time they ate at the
"Short Stop Cafe". The entertainment
at school consisted of the usual skits, pea-
nut races, chariot races, and wrestling
matches. To encl'the festive occasion,
prizes were given for the best costumes.

Band and Orchestra
Entertain With
Music

The marching band, consisting of eighty students
under the direction of Mr. Albert Travis, helped boost
the spirit of cheerleaders and students at pep rallies, and
football and basketball games.

One of the highlights for the orchestra this year
was their performance at the spring musical, " My Fair
Lady."

Ensembles, as is traditional, were organized to
perform at other schools. The dance band provided
music for dances and "Sound Off." For informal occa-
sions, the polka band was available.

Clyde Comstock Is Named
Lieutenant Colonel

The highlight of February 16 was the twenty-
seventh annual Military Ball, held at the Livestock
Exchange Building. Judy Carr accompanied Clyde
Comstock, the Lieutenant Colonel. This was the last
individual ball for South, since next year all the
schools will have their balls together.

Offers Service The club sponsors are Miss Sharon Toner and
Mrs. Karen Recd.
"The Portias have fun together whether it
be a social activity or service project," stated Mrs.
Reed, one of the club sponsors. The main func-
tion of this girls' club is to serve others and parti-
cipate in various activities. Some social events of
the past year were a Halloween party, a wiener
roast for new members, a Christmas party, and
a visit from cosmetologists and a wig specialist.

Service projects of the club included
preparing a basket for a needy family at Thanks-
giving and giving several teas for the teachers. In
the spring, the members had a banquet at which
they honored the most outstanding persons.
Awards were given and new officers for next
year were announced.

Challenging Youth in Agriculture

The Future Farmers of America
play an important part in many district,
state, regional, and national contests. At
the State Fair many chapter flocks are
displayed by the boys.

Thursday are spent at the F.F.A.
farm near Venice, and Two Rivers. Here
the Future Farmers learn a great deal
about farm equipment, crops, and proper
care of farm animals.

One of the main social events
consist of a parent and son banquet,
where deserving boys are presented
awards. The social year is brought to a
close with a hay-rack ride.

G.A.A. Members Have Fun

G. A. A. is an organization where girls can partic-
ipate in a variety of activities. When a girl joins this club,
she starts to earn points. These points are totaled togeth-
er at the end of the year. If she has earned 13 points,
she receives her first award. For her second award she
must earn 13 more points. A third award is given if
she earns 14 points. The fourth and final award is given
when she earns 15 points.

Some of the activities the girls may participate
in are: bowling, aerial darts, volley ball, gymnastics,
swimming, and basketball.

G.A.A. girls conduct social events, including
all-night camp-outs. During the week of homecoming
they work on a float to enter in the homecoming
parade. To draw the year to a close, they have a banquet
and announce the new officers.

Customs and Traditions

The purpose of the French Club is to
learn the language while studying the people
and culture of the land.

Members hold regular meetings where
they listen to guest speakers, films, tape record-
ings, and records. They also study old French
customs and traditions.

Because of the new modular scheduling,
a new group know as the Student Commission
was formed by Mr. Matzke, the assistant
principal. It constists of voluntary students
whose purpose is to direct students to open
labs and resource centers during mods. They
also keep order in the cafeteria during the
lunch mods.
