1969

Omaha South High School Southite yearbook for the 1968-1969 school year.

Rarely is a live per-
formance captured on
film in a unique and
purely accidental way.
"Music and the Spoken
Word," South High
School Choir's Christmas
program, is seen here on
this page as no one has
ever seen it before. The
drama of an overwhelm-
ingly powerful experi-
ence in Christmas listen-
ing is pictured as the
camera eye saw it.

First Choir

The auditorium lights dim, the audience hushes. Slowl y , slowly, down the aisles
come the members of First Choir. The candles they hold signify hope or peace.
Beethoven once said, "Music should strike fire from the heart of man, and bring tears
from the eyes of woman." Under the direction of Mr. Roland Hinrichs, the First Choir
begins to sing. Music is poetry, but sometimes it's magic too. Not fire, but warmth;
not tears, but feeling.

Girls

Nothing, surely , is more alive than a word. And nothing , surely, is more v ocal than a girl.
Put them together - mix with pi a no, a dash of hair spray , a touch of gi ggles. Results? Music,
of course, tended to as only women can.

First Girls

The female voice , taken singlely, is soft , sometimes sharp-edged, yet beguiling. An as-
semblege of female voices takes the listener to soaring he ights of remembering: a cathedral
choir, a lullaby , a train trip in the dark. The First Girls Choir can and did make songs music;
memories linger, and thei r voices rapture.

The Pomperets

Under the sponsorship of Miss Wyona Martin , The Pomperets became an extra and eye-
appealing attraction at sports functions. The girls practiced routines after school. Their red
Aussie hats and brilliant red and white outfits made them a stand-out. Even when out of breath,
out of a ride , or out of doors, the girls looked spirited .
