season '91
The South High Varsity baseball
team began its season with a new
coach and a young team.
Mr. Mario Remijio took over the
head coaching job from Mr. Joe
Mancuso, who had decided to
devote his time to the South High
football team and to his family.
Only four seniors we re on this
year's squad: Mike Peters, Vince
Zaracki, Joe Carroll, and Eddie
Koterba .
The season was filled with bad
ij weather and disappointment. At
press time, the Packers had logged
only one victory which was against
the North Vikings, 4-3.
The Pack played a tough game
against the number two team in the
state, the Northwest Huskies, losing
8-2. In that game, the team had
three hits, with a double and two
RBl's from Zaracki.
The most upsetting game of the
year was against the Cougars of
Gross High. South lost to Gross by a
score of 11-7 after having a 6-0 lead.

Being on the track team requires a
lot of time and discipline. The team
practices every day from 3 to 5 p.m.
at Flanagan High School's track.
They practice under the direction
of head coach Mr. Robert Garcia,
and assistants Mr. Terry Thomas, Mr.
Jimmy Smith, Mr. Robert Manning
and Ms. Sue Peters.
Track season involved several
dual meets as well as Metro and
State.
"Track is a sport which is very
physical and mental," said junior
Julian Johnson. "It is also a sport
which involves preparation and time
sequence. Track is something that
should be more recognized among
the Packers at South. Because we
are young, strong and full of
determination, we need a lot of
support behind us."
Coach Garcia, who also teaches
mathematics here, noted that the
boys' team is talented but very
young. He added that the girls'
team, led by senior distance runner
Kari Foral, has the quality to be
among the best in the state.

in Persian Gulf
~ Desert Storm
War has always been something
we've watch ed other nations
engage in. we didn't realize what
war really was and we really didn't
care. Then it happened to us.
On August 2, 1990, Saddam
Hussein and his Iraqi troops invaded
Kuwait and as a result, President
George Bush sent planeloads of
American soldiers over to the
deserts of Saudi Arabia.
These soldiers were family
members and friends. We sat and
waited while peace talks were
conducted and finally broke down.
Eventually, on the morning of
January 17, 1991, Iraqi time, the
news broke that the first bombs had
been dropped on Iraq.
Over the days that followed we
watched as Allied forces were
successful in their air campaign and
in late February, President Bush
ordered the ground war to begin.
In less than a week, Hussein's
troops surrendered, the Allies were
victorious and Kuwait was liberated.
