Miss Peters, the girls' junior varsity bas-
ketball coach, was pleased with this year's team
attitude and team effort. She felt the girls had a
good season. They improved their skills and
gained self-confidence because of their hard
work in practices and at the games.
Coach Peters said, " I feel we 've come a long
way, definitely!" She saw a lot of improvements
over the season, especially in self-confidence.
"The players improved a great deal in their shoot-
ing and becoming more aggressive," Miss Peters
replied.
When asked if she felt the girls did their best
athletically, she replied, " They can do better,
because they don't realize their potential, not
because they don't try."
Miss Peters believed that the girls' wo rst
moments came when they played and only
scored nine points against Roncalli and Lincoln
High . She said, "The shots weren't going in and
the girls were frustrated by the other team's
defense." Their best moments came against Dus-
chesne when everything went well for them. "Our
offense worked well and we were very effective
on defense." replied Peters.
Miss Peters said she always worries about the
competition, but to mentally prepare for the
games, the girls listened to her do a lot of talking!
"They can beat any team they want toll'' she last
commented.
them play as well as they did against Papillion and
Northwest. '·
To prepare mentally for a game, Oholendt
explained that they observed their opponents
offense and defense. They also repeated fundamen-
tals, watched films of their opponents, and films of
their past games to try to learn from their mistakes.
Oholendt declined to comment when asked whether
the team's lack of motivation or the coaching techni-
ques were responsible for the poor seasonal show-
ing .
Coach Jack Oholendt felt this year's football play-
ers with the best possibility of going on to play col-
lege football were Frank Dennell, Willie Kousgaard,
Dave Vincent, Sam Madison and John Hayes.

out for it. Most people think side horse is the hard-
est, but for me, I think rings is the hardest for me.
You can hurt your back fast on swinging and hurt
your hands. It's really hard to keep your balance
up there."
We asked Mario if drugs was a problem in gym-
nastics. "Why, I think in every sport there's
always a problem. There really isn't that much
problem in gymnastics. It's all right to go out and
(laugh), live it up once in awhile."
Mario was asked to tell us about the gymnastic
coach. "He's great!" said Mario. "Coach Beran
tries to help you out in any way he can. He knows
what you're going through right now because, he
went through the same thing when he was in high
school."
Gymnastics starts at the end of August, and it
ends in November. "We took first in both the
Metro and Papillion Invitational, and we did pretty
good in the Art Harrison Invitational meet," said
Mario.
Mario was asked if he was proud of how far he
made it. "Well, I figure, if I could have started at a
earlier age or just concentrated more on it, I could
be a little bit further. Right now I'm trying to get
my butt in gear, and maybe get a scholarship. I'd
like to go to a Division I School, but so far I'll prob-
ably end up going to the University of Northern
Iowa. ··
In college Mario would like to major in Biology
and Physical Education when he graduates. Mar-
John Hayes is South High's star football player I
among many others. John told us his feelings -
about the team, and his future plans. "I was an
offensive guard and a defense tackle. I asked the I "Y -
coach how did I get to play on the line? Well, he
rambled on with some story."
We asked John how his season went. " I figure
my season could have been better. "
The question was asked if drugs were a prob-
lem? "Well if there was, we never knew," said
John .
John was asked if practice was a problem with
his school work or social time. "Sometimes I won-
der. I don't know if it was all worth it. If you get
recognized for playing football and other sports
you'd think it was well worth it.''

P.ula Kaspar is a South High spiker for the Vol- INTER<:.
leyball team. Paula is one of the captains of her -r,-,
team , and has enjoyed her volleyball season.
~
In volleyball there are only two positions: setter
and spiker. When asked if Paula could do better in ®
her position she said, "Yes, by practicing harder,
and not sluffing off as much."
Paula said that there was very little arguing
among the team members. When asked if durgs
might have interlerred with the team's perlorm-
ance Paula said, "If it interlerred with their playing
or with the team's life, I wouldn't think it was fair to
the team."
Paula was asked to comment on the volleyball
coach. "Coach O'Hara was out for fun , and he
wanted us to play as a team."
Before the games, the team does their regular
warmups: serve, setter, and spike. During the
game Paula thinks of her mistakes that she has
made, and what the other people are doing wrong
and tries to help them out. Paula tries to get their
morale up, and to get them playing like a team.
"The over-all season was twelve and three, and
we finished third in the Westside Invitational, and
we were like third out of twenty metro teams,"
said Paula.
Paula feels that volleyball kept all of the team
going. We asked Paula who she would like to
thank. "I would like to thank Coach O'Hara for
everything he's done for the whole team, and for
a successful season. For the future, players
should work as a whole team to win.''
···•we John was asked about the pressures of the coach.
"The only time you should worry in practice is when
I the coach ignores you. If a coach doesn't say any-
thing to you, then he/she isn't paying attention to 99
you. So when a coach bitches at you, you should
appreciate it to the fullest. I think Coach Oholendt is
great! I think the coach probably understands things
more in a situation with athletes because he went
through it all himself in high school," said John.
John received the Stockmen's 400 Club Line-
men's Award. The award was presented by
Nebraska University Coach Tom Osborne.
John advises the future football team: "It will take
a lot of hard work for a successful season. I also
would like to thank Coach Oholendt for helping me
out during the season. Coach, you're an all right
guy! "
John is looking forward to going to college. So far
Nebraska and Iowa State have offered a scholarship
to John Hayes.
Completing a good season , the girls' golf
team has finished with a record of six wins and three
losses.
Several individual and team records have been set
this year by the following: Karen Fonfara, only a
sophomore, had a record low score of 38 against
Gross. A record breaking low score of 173 was
recorded against Bellevue East at Spring Lake. At
Metro, the girls finished sixth out of 16 schools.
"I feel that the team played well all year. The spirit
of each individual contributed a lot to the success of
the team. The efforts and hard work really paid off, "
said Karen Fonfara .

Boys' tennis team ended their season with one
win and seven losses. Their win was against Gross.
Several individuals have done well during the reg-
ular meets: Ernie Escobedo, Jeff Kurtz and Jeff
Hamblen were just a few.
At Metro they placed 16th and at state they scored
four points. In doubles Ken Curran and Jeff Kurtz
took second.
"Our season may not have been the greatest, but
the memories from participating on the team will
always be," said Ken Curran.

Varsity basketball has had a really \,..... - -.... -
competitive year so far, with the excep- J
tion of two games. Prep High School was
the toughest team they had played , in the
coach's opinion.
The hardest strategy taught was just to
learn how to play as a team and be very
competitive. Two players that have
shown a lot of potential are John Hayes
and Paul Riza. There's on ly one sopho-
more on the team who is Sedric Hunter.
The coach sa id, " I have really been
impressed with him just as well."
One person that dropped out was Jim
Gates, who broke his arm during a game.
Basketball was good this year because of
the challenge, and as John Hayes put it,
"It was great! All we needed was some
more victories. "

South High Girls' varsity bas-
ketball team felt this was the best year
they have ever had. Their record was
nine wins and eleven losses. They did
not go to state, but one of the high-
lights of the season was beating Mil-
lard twice during the season. The
team had a lot of spirit and the girls
worked together well. They improved
over last year which was one of their
main goals.
Coach Kirk McLaughlin com-
mented, "I'm proud of the team. They
won some of the games they were not
expecting to win. Monica Espejo, Tina
Mangler, Chris Boldt, Sandra Watson,
Lisa Persing and Judy Janousek did a
lot for the team. All the girls did well
for not having as much previous
experience as the other teams have
had."

Basketball Team, according to Coach
Peters. The team's record was wins and
losses. Although they did not win many of
their games, they still feel they had a
good season. Part of the reason for their
losses can be assessed to the team's
inexperience and because of the team's
youth. The girls enjoyed playing, and did
not get too upset when they lost, because
they knew they had done their best. Miss
Peters added, " All I could ask is they do
their best, and I think they did." Four of
the J.V. members played for the Varsity
team also. Michelle Belcastro and Lydia
Santos were the two top scorers from the
J.V. Team and Mary Stoley and Jessie
Ourada were the two top rebounders.

Swim team's season was not as good as
expected this year due to the lack of participants.
Both the girls' and the boys' team practiced together
this year and the team consisted of mostly sopho-
mores. Having a lot of sophomores will help the team
in future years, but it was a real downfall for this
year"s team because of their inexperience. Mark
Willing and Paul Stark, both seniors, were the cap-
tains for boys and the girls' captains were Cheryl
Knapp and Carol Tracy. Dungan, the team's 50-yard
freestyler earned five first places during the season.
He also earned five first places in the 100-yard
breast stroke with a time of 1:10.35. Willing had a
successful season. His best time recorded in the
100-yard freestyle was clocked at the South-Prep
meet at 1:56.52. He earned six first places in the
100-yard freestyle this year. Mr. Wayne Boldt, the
boys' coach added, "The season should be better
next year if the members from this year return and
more students show an interest."
Top row, left to right: Mr. Wayne Boldt, Susan Van Cleave, Tammy Baier, Suzanne Anderson and Chris Hays. Middle row: Miss

farly morning runs and tedious weight training have benefited four of
Coach Hazlip's wrestlers. Qualifying for state in their weight classes are:
Tony Bravo at 112, Jim Heinz at 126, Dennis Hardin at 167 and Bill Coore
at 185.
As well as being an individual sport, team effort is very important for
wrestlers. This year 's team brought home a second place trophy from the
Prep Invitational. The Russian tie-up is a wrestling move encouraged by
the new assistant coach , Fred Marse!.

TALENT
,,
One of the Ambassadors, Diane Yates, is shown Pictured above are Gary Hering and Shala Reimers, his
here pursuing her good talent to its fullest peak. three year partner in skating. Gary's a member of the
club at Skateland, and Shala, 17, attends Millard High
School.
Roller rinks and stages are common places for
Jeff Halbert, Diane Yates, Gary Hering and Jeff
Smejkal. These are just a few Packers who chose to
extend th eir interests outside the normal schoo l
channels. Rather than football , track, or running for
Homecoming and being recognized by other stu- ..
dents, they chose to do their talents elsewhere as skaters, pianists,
and singers.
Formal lessons were out of the question for Jeff Smejkal. His n_at-
ural talent of playing music by ear was discovered at the age of five
on a little inexpensive toy organ. Jett has advanced his own style
through his Baldwin Organ and Fender Rhodes.
Jeff progressed eno ugh to play in " Images." While he was a
member of this group, the band had won th e Boys' Club Talent
Show.
Jett plays in the Stage Band here at South High. In school he
practices fifth, sixth, and seventh hour and puts in an extra hour at
home. Jeff plans to attend Metro Tech to continue this study in
music. Even though Jeff has wri tten some melodies, he feels that,
"A person doesn't have to read music."
Why play the piano instead of the drums o r g uitar?
Jeff Halbert and his present partner Lisa Geis
are pictured here after they had won the
Nationals in figure skating.

South High Students open up their lives as
Skaters, Pianists, and Singers
Jeff admits to being a part of the small population of male pianists. He believes, " There are thousands of guitar players and
thousands of drummers, but very few keyboard artists." Some say a good singer sounds as pretty as a bird chirping on an early
spring morning. Diane Yates, a senior at South High must have some musical ability with all she's done. Diane started singing
early in grade school, where most of us start. Yet as she grew older her voice became more advanced. Now she sings with a
gospel group called 'The Rising Stars of Jesus Christ.' She's sang at Caniglia's restaurant and has won an award in the gospel
competition at Septemberfest in Omaha two years ago. Singing with the Ambassadors at South allows more practice and experi-
ence for her but she seems to be doing quite well. " Filled with Some Soul Searching," and "Black on Black" are a few of the
many T.V. performances she's made. "We hope to make it from recordings." The years of practice and Performances she hopes
will pay off as a good sound career for her either in a group or as a solo. College is in her future. However, music will only be her
minor. He plans seem set for her steps to reach her goal, while progressing she passed on a bit of advise to novice vocalists: "If
you're really into music, take it while you 're in school and go from there. If you have faith in God you can do it! " Jeff Halbert and
Gary Hering are two amateur skaters who attend South High. Both started out at different times for different reasons and have
different ideas of carrying out his talent. Jeff started when he was eleven years old. "My dad introduced me to it. He's still
involved. The w hole family is." It seems that skating is a family function for the Halberts. They do keep together. Jeff's had seven
P!3r1ners sine he's started skating. "I got better than _my partners: " is the general reason for so many. Yet his previous partner is
Linda Geis, 19. He feels it's better to keep their relat1onsh1p as friends because going together could cause fighting which could
interfere with their performance. Skating hasn't interfered with school. " It's like a job after classes. I'm just lazy regarding school. "
But with around 100 trophies and more than 50 medals and 25 plaques to his credit. The 1984 Olympics is one of his biggest
~oals. Three first place awards at Regionals in figure skatin_g , freestyle and d~nce category have helped him on his way to becom-
ing a professional. Another dream slowly becoming a reality. Spanish class1cals and synthesizer music are the types that appeal
most to Jeff. Dance steps are required in the senior age, so Jeff cho_oses his own music and performs with it. Two years didn't
seem to make much of a difference for Gery Hering, "':'~.'? st!3rted skating at 13 years old. Things were different t~ough. "I started
out taking gr~up lessions in order to skate backwards. _!his girls (Theresa Rose) snatch~d me out of the group and encouraged
me to take private lessons." Theresa needed a partner. Guys w ho are my age are rare In starting skating." " I passed her up in
talent, then she quit skating." Now Gary skates w1th_Shala Reimers, 17, who g_oes to Millard High . They've been partners for three
years now. They've accumulated aro1:1nd 25 trophies and medals from Regionals and state. For Gary " This is more or less a
hobby with me. I'm going into the ~arine~ fo~ the education and travel after school so there's no future in this right now." Both
Jeff and Gary like to sleep yet get htt!e of 11with practice. However Jeff wishes to cary o ut his talents to its fullest and go profes-
sional. Someday he wishes tq, own his own rink and teach classes. So the next time you spend an evening at a skating rink and
see someone who skates well, take a second look, 11 may be Jeff Halbert or Gary Herrng , two fellow Packers. 145
