Women’s International Club (WIC) Jakarta
The Women’s International Club (WIC) Jakarta was founded on 11 March 1950 by four ladies of
different nationalities who wanted to share more than just their friendship and their culture: Mrs. Suwarni
Pringgodigdo (Indonesia), Mrs. Martha Galbraith (U.S.A.), Mrs. Chrystal Packingham (Great Britain) and
Mrs. Tarabaig (India). It started with 10 members.
The motto was created with a heart of Mrs. Siti Wahjunah (Poppy) Sjahrir who believes,
“the essence is that we can live peacefully, prevent war, with understanding between nations.”
“Friendship through Understanding”
The Club logo was created by Mrs. Suleiman, who later became Head of the Archaeological
Department of the Ministry of Education in Jakarta.
The emblem is in the form of a lotus-shaped lamp:
a. The lotus is the symbol of friendship and sacredness. In Indonesian iconography, the lotus
blossom stands for divinity and women.
b. The flame signifies the enlightening of darkness and misunderstanding between women of
different nationalities.
We trust that the light and warmth of true friendship between women of different cultures and
backgrounds will be spread to every corner of the world and in so doing, make it a happier place to live.
Aims of the Club:
1. To foster friendship and mutual understanding between women of different nationalities
2. To contribute to the cultural development of women in general
3. To promote the cause of education
4. To contribute to social improvement
Let’s work together to achieve our WIC Jakarta’s aims.

FROM THE PUBLISHING EDITOR
Dear WIC Jakarta Members,
Greetings!
I am honored to present to you our WIC Jakarta Journal 2020 - 2022. Our
WIC President 2020 - 2022, Mrs. Dinar Ari Wijayanti has hoped to see
WIC Jakarta Journal published during her term. With her full support
along with Vice President, Mrs. Kremena Angelova and our WIC Jakarta
Executive Committee 2020-2022, we bring you the WIC Jakarta Journal.
It has been an exciting yet challenging two years for me as the Publishing
Editor. I love every moment especially the meetings and the interviews
with our members and honorary members as they shared about their life,
their stories and their love and passion. Through this journey, I have seen
our vision in action, “Friendship through Understanding”.
We have endeavored into a new project of having virtual newsletters due
to the pandemic. Because of the pandemic, health policies, lockdowns
and social distancing, we changed our tools for communication. We
digitally published in each quarter to all members and to our media
platforms. We cannot do all these without our contributors. Thank you to
all the ladies who have contributed to the four issues of WIC Jakarta e-Newsletters. You have enriched our club
with the sharing of your stories, your culture, your country and your family. I truly enjoyed and appreciated every
word. Terima kasih.
It is our joy, finally, to publish our WIC Jakarta Journal 2020-2022. It has been sometime since the last published
journal. Thank you again, our dear team, for all the support, hard work, collaboration and teamwork that were
key to make this a reality. It is so rewarding to see the two years of joint articles compiled into a book for WIC
Jakarta. It documents our friends, our honorary members, our members, our experiences, our time, our journey
and most importantly, part of our history. We hope you will enjoy the journal.
I take this opportunity to introduce our next Publishing Editor, Mrs. Pooja Assomull.
Again, thank you for the honor and opportunity to serve at the Executive Committee 2020-2022. I have learned
a lot and had a wonderful experience. Thank you, Ari and Kremena, for your leadership. As we say, “All for
One, One for All!"
We wish President Nina Handoko, Vice Principal Fay Kadaroesman Adhiwiyogo and WIC Jakarta Executive
committee 2022-2024 all the best!
Thank you, WIC. Madam Barno by the ocean in Bali

Q: What is a common misconception about WIC?
A: People always think of us as a charity organization. WIC is actually not
a charity organization per se. It is an organization that does charity. We are
actually an organization in the ‘business’ of making friends. We do what we can
with what we have and what we have are many talented, dedicated, and hard
working women in our organization: my everyday heroes.

I joined WIC Jakarta in 1997 when I first arrived in Indonesia. My mother-in-law
who was a very active member of the club introduced me to WIC Jakarta. Since
then, I have been a member and I have been privileged in working with many
wonderful ladies in different sections.
I have learned to polish my social skills, and feel blessed in giving a helping hand
to people who are less privileged. That is the biggest happiness I could have ever
received. My motto in life is “Give back to society in any way u can”.
MRS. MINA C DL-NORTHCOTT

forever be treasured. WIC Jakarta has thrived over the years of its existence and I
feel truly blessed to have been part of this organization.”

heart, always and forever!!”
MRS. ANITA DJAJADININGRAT (Itoy)
Liaison Officer
The past and present pandemic years may have posed some
challenges in looking for club members yet as Liaison Officer, Itoy is
mainly responsible for recruiting and processing all expatriates in Jakarta
and others who might be interested in becoming a member of WIC
Jakarta.
Many of them have had to return to their home countries,
recalled by their respective companies and also to be with their families.
Rest assured, this did not mar nor put our vigor off to a standstill. We are
trying to find other ways to encourage and recruit other expatriate ladies
who might be keen and interested to join our club. We have also resorted
to other means in keeping in touch with one another by creating &
assimilating hybrid activities to keep track of our members.
“Despite everything that is happening, it is time that we aim to
venture into new challenges towards the digital world. So, be prepared,
Ladies.. We will come to you in a whole different way and in definitely a
better shape! We hope you will welcome us as much as we would
welcome you. Keep well and stay safe.”

this because besides the challenges that came with being in a global

virtual events. However, I did not let this become my barrier or stop me from
doing my absolute best and justifying the responsibilities that I signed up for.
That being said, now when I look back at my journey during this EC, I am
grateful that by changing my mindset I was able to change these challenges

“TRANSFORMATION”
by Dinar Ari Wijayanti
It is still fresh in my mind when the slate candidates of the
Executive Committee 2020-2022 was announced in the Business
Meeting on 13 February 2020. None of us ever thought that we are
going to face this global pandemic.
It only took few weeks and the world was idle. We were in a
daunting situation, uncertain and not knowing how to handle this
unprecedented situation.
During this time, I have been thinking on how to keep our
members engaged and to consolidate our new Executive Committee to
keep our Club routine activities running smoothly. To be honest, I was
not sure about anything. Many questions were spinning in my head;
how, when, where, who…
What I can do just to learn and find many information as fast as
possible. Any information that I got, I tried to share them to this new
Executive Committee and we had a load of opened discussions. I
realized that our team also have other challenges. We did not have
enough time to get to know each other much better. Everything had to
be done through virtual platforms as physical engagement was almost
impossible.
Yet, I was so grateful. Before the outbreak, Kremena and I had
some sort of quality time to find our chemistry. We believe that in more
ways than one, we had to bring our club to the new era. We will have to take baby steps. Nothing is impossible as long
as we work as a team.
Slowly, we made some plans. We started rebuilding our club from the inside out. We trained our staff on digital
and database systems. We learned how to work from home, we tried to manage our club remotely. On the other side,
we also pushed ourselves to do the same. We created a ‘working from home system’. We tried to prepare the digital
platforms by activating our website, social media, signing-up and subscribing to the Zoom application and finding ways
to keep connected to the members. We created many virtual activities like photo frames to celebrate many important
events. Our goals were simple- just to make our members more active via WhatsApp groups - social media and keep
them busy so they can keep communicating while we are trying to update them regarding our club events and activities,
not to mention the state of what our club is at this stage.
Our first virtual event was the 75th Indonesian Independence Day on August 2020. We were not sure how many
members will join via Zoom and would we be able manage to hold it smoothly. We were worried about many things.
Yet, we bravely tried to present it virtually and we were ever so grateful that many members actually joined in.
Based on this experience, we tried to improve our digital capabilities; everything is learning by doing. I always
encourage the Executive Committee and staff that we can do it. We must support and compliment each other.
“One for All; All for One.”
Slowly but surely, we had various virtual and hybrid activities. On the same note, our staff’s skills improved on
digital platforms.
At the Club, we prepared the staff with masks and face shields, hand sanitizers and a thermometer gun were
prepared at the registration desk upon entrance. All rooms were disinfected and tidied up regularly and we also made
sure we opened all windows for better ventilation and air circulation. This included the re-arranging of the meeting
rooms so as to keep social distancing.
In updating our members, we started sending e-Bulletins on top of having the Bulletin hardcopy. We created
the WIC Jakarta E-Newsletters and Journal.
Often, I ask myself this: Was it enough? NO...
The world has changed. Our society is struggling. Our institutions and our scholarship students suffered as well.
We have to continue our support to them. Some of institutions were affected by COVID-19; some students had
difficulties continuing their studies.
Our Executive Committee as a team, worked hand in hand to help Social Welfare and Scholarship teams to keep
their regular routines. We changed our supports from manual (physical) to online (hybrid). We arranged the Children’s
Day and the Senior’s Day virtually. We held webinars for students. We initiated “WIC Cares for Help” so the members
are able to participate in helping our society. We worked together with other institutions to distribute our donations.
We made plans to distribute money donations from our National Patrons. Many times we had to reschedule it because
of the PPKM. With much delight finally, on 20 December 2021, we completed the Nuri Project and handed it over it to
the community.
15
WOMEN’S INTERNATIONAL CLUB - JAKARTA JOURNAL 2022
During these uncertain situations, we managed our communication networks with the Jakarta Convention
Center Management. We learned from them on how to adjust our charity bazaar in this new era. We are still not sure on
how and when will we have the Annual Charity Bazaar again but we are definitely trying to learn the new systems and
regulations so as to fulfill it as soon as we are able to.
And then, what is next?
To continue our charities, we need to raise funds. How?
Once again, we took baby steps to create our “WIC Online Shop”. We started with a few homemade products
and today, many of our Honorary Members have also joined in. It did raise some questions: how much money are we
able to make from the online shop? Is it worth having it? Will it be enough to continue our support to our institutions?
Despite our efforts, we faced numerous queries which none of us had answers to, but we carried on to pursue this. We
shall remain headstrong on going about our decisions rather than to stand still without doing anything. Or better still,
we can take many little steps and retain doing only simple or maybe super mini-fundraisers just to keep our members
engaged. Just as well, we can still enjoy many homemade products from our talented members. It is surprising that
these homemade products came from member’s hidden talents, the majority were well-pleased with their amazing
creations. These little steps indeed helped us grow. We had an Online Shop with the Netherland Embassy and the
Slovakian Embassy.
Now, how about our Website?
This pandemic was indeed a call for a total transformation. We also started rebuilding our website as one of our
windows to get connected to the world. We would want to reach out the XYZ generations and Generation Alpha. We
want to have a virtual bazaar. We want people to know about us and be aware of our existence. We want to upgrade our
website to be more user-friendly. Members will be able get the ‘One Stop Service’ by accessing our website. They may
pay their membership fees, shop online, sign -up to events and get updated information about our Club with just one
click. We realized that this process was not going to be as easy as making pizza. This project will have to perpetually be
updated following the world’s conditions, situations, knowledge and technology. Now that the world is borderless and
we are part of it, it is time for us to transform and our website will be our initial landing page to be connected to the
world.
Dear WIC Jakarta members, the transformation journey will continue. I thought I had to pause for a moment to
stop my fingers from typing this story.
This transformation is now a vital part of our lives. We transform everyday, every minute, every second, even in
the very little things we do. Most important is that every transformation that we are going through must mean it is for
the betterment of everything, especially in keeping our club flourishing and for it to endure for more years to come.
Just be positive and be adaptive.
The spirit of our motto “Friendship Through Understanding” is our back bone to the wisdom of the heart.
On behalf of the Executive Committee 2020-2022, I would like to extend a massive thank you and appreciation
to all members and everyone who keep supporting our club in their more ways than one.
In friendship,
Dinar Ari Wijayanti Nugroho
President
Executive Committee 2020-2022

TEGAL ALUR is a sub-district in West Jakarta. There are
more than 1000 seniors residing in TA, of which 10% are
very poor or live below the poverty line. They live with
their children or with their spouses while others are living
alone. Most of their children work in factories located in TA
and they have been greatly affected by the pandemic.
They do not have jobs as the factories have closed. Their
living conditions are very sad as each year TA is inundated
by water due to yearly floods especially in the months of
December through February. WIC Jakarta through the
Social Welfare Committee supports 60 seniors due to
available budget but actually about 100 seniors need
monthly support in the form of staple food, adult diapers,
mobility aid, etc. During the pandemic, we worked with 15
volunteers who deliver the goods to the homes of the
seniors. Some of those we support are bedridden. It is our
hope that WIC Jakarta can still continue to support them.

Batik: A Lifetime Advocacy
by Danie Prakosa
My name is Danie Prakosa. I was born as
the eldest with three younger brothers.
I started my Batik business since 2007
and maintained three core activities as
follows:
a. Buying and selling Batiks, new and antiques;
b. Preserving batik fabrics by delivering Batik
Spa [wash & steam batik with special herbal
ingredients];
c. Advocating/ Educating Batik knowledge.
Batik has been in my family since forever.
Through my late father's lineage, we are
descendants of the first King of Jogjakarta,
Hamengku Buwono I. In some important events in
our family, we wear batik as part of the traditions.
In daily life, we are used to wearing batik outfits
as well.
In 2007, when I was still working in an
organization in Jakarta, I had difficulties in buying
good design batik clothes that suit me. I decided
to sew my batik clothes in Jogjakarta with my
own office design. As such, I created my own
batik for office outfits. As some friends asked me
where I bought my batik, it gave me an inspiration
to make and sell batik clothes with my own
design.
In order to market them, I partnered with friends
who own clothes shops where I could sell my
batik clothes in their stores.
During the interaction with batik makers and customers, I
learned that in fact there were many Indonesian people
who still did not know about batik in terms of batik
technique making, history and philosophical meaning. I
didn't realize it as Batik is a common thing in my family.
I decided to quit from my job in 2009 and decided to
shift from an employee to become a self-employed
person. That was the year when Indonesia was granted a
recognition that Batik is an Intangible Cultural Heritage
for the world by UNESCO. The demand of Batik
increased dramatically since then and I got more insights
that there was a great need to share my knowledge on
batik to more people.
27
WOMEN’S INTERNATIONAL CLUB - JAKARTA JOURNAL 2022
Ibegan to sell new and vintage 'Kain Batik' as
the addition of my previous Batik Cloth line.
The demand for batik cloths was quite high
and coupled with the need for people to know
more about Batik Indonesia. In order to focus
more on batik cloth business, I ended up not
continuing the line of batik fashion. I then
opened Batik Spa, a business line for cloth
treatments which plays important role in taking
care of vintage batiks.
The recognition of UNESCO in 2009 has increased the
demand of Batik Indonesia domestically as well as
internationally. Batik makers receive more orders. Many
traditional/classic batik designs are produced. Furthermore,
there are a lot of Batik artisans releasing new designs and
creativity on Batik. Interestingly, the need for understanding
the history and meaning of Batik patterns rose dramatically
as well, until today.
One day, I spoke with Ibu Fay on the recent batik interests
among its lovers. I shared about how batik and its meaning
has been understood better now compared to how it was 10
years ago. There have been domestic events to introduce
Batik more and were mostly attended by the locals.
However, there is a
need to introduce
Batik Indonesia
toward the
international
audiences for
several reasons:
* There are versions of Batik from other countries and many
of the patterns were inspired by traditional Batik Indonesia.
Unfortunately, the inspiration were taken from the patterns
only and not with their philosophical meanings.
* In each traditional batik pattern, there are good wishes
inserted as symbolized on the motifs. If Indonesian batik
motifs are adapted by other countries, it would be nice if they
understood the philosophical meaning of the motifs as well.
* To strengthen Batik as the Indonesian identity in the eyes of
the international community.

the WIC Jakarta Batik Webinar Series can be a resource person to introduce Batik Indonesia to
the WIC members through webinars. We discussed
further and then I proposed to Ibu Fay that we make a
webinar series to capture Batik knowledge in brief yet in
a comprehensive manner. The series will be an
opportunity for the WIC members to see the beauty of
Batik Indonesia in reality. The theme of the webinar
series is as follows:
ANCIENT JAVANESE BATIKS IN TODAY'S LIFE
(1st Webinar held in 22nd March 2021)
In this first WIC Batik webinar, we briefly introduced the
Batik history, how to distinguish between traditional
Batik Solo and Jogja, as well as the patterns to be worn
during the ceremony of stages in life, i.e. birth,
marriage & deceased.
HOW TRADITIONAL BATIK INFLUENCES PEOPLE'S LIFE
IN AND OUTSIDE THE PALACE [KERATON]
(2nd Webinar held in 24th May 2021)
Coverage of the presentation in the second session was to learn
the influences of traditional Court Batik to the people in and out of
the Palace.
As the people who lived outside the Palace learned the beauty of
Batik patterns and its meaning, they had desire to wear Batik as
well. However, there were several “Larangan” (Forbidden) motifs
which could only be worn by the royal family members back then.
Therefore, the ordinary people then started to create new batik
adapted from the Royal Batik motifs or completely new motifs, as
well.
THE INFLUENCE OF TRADITIONAL COURT BATIK TO THE
DEVELOPMENT OF BATIK IN OTHER REGIONS IN INDONESIA
AND OTHER COUNTRIES
(3rd Webinar held in November 2021)
With the development of batik as a business, there are many
merchants who develop their batik market to many other areas
outside Jogjakarta and Solo, such as Banyumas, Tasikmalaya,
Garut, Cirebon, Pekalongan and Lasem.

THE INFLUENCE OF INTERNATIONAL TRADE AND COLONIALISM TOWARD
BATIK INDONESIA MOTIFS (4th of the Webinar Series)
International trades have been established in Indonesia since the Majapahit and Mataram Kingdom
era. Most of the traders came from India, Arab and China. From historical records, we learn that these
traders also brought cloth or ceramic items that influenced batik designs at that time. The same was
done with their beliefs/religions that were adopted in Indonesia. During the Dutch and Japanese
colonization, we learn that the existence of these invaders had strong influences so that batik motifs
developed very rapidly, especially in the Pasisiran area [North Coast of Java].
LOOKING DEEPER INTO BATIK PERANAKAN [CHINESE] AND
BATIK BELANDA [DUTCH OCCUPATION] INFLUENCES
(5th of the Webinar Series)
Batik Indonesia reaching its finest quality happened during the Dutch
Occupation. There were Chinese traders who got privileges to develop
business, including Batik. They played a major role in influencing the
development of batik design, technique and quality. As demand of batiks
increased from Dutch people, they also took part in directing the
development of batik style and then were known as Batik
Belanda.
BATIK AND ITS MAESTRO (6th of the Webinar Series)
This session is designed to showcase the best Indonesian
Batik made by Batik Maestro on an offline event. We hope
the pandemic is over next year.
My passion is to spread understanding about batik to
the public, especially the international community. I see that
domestically, there are many people who talk about batik,
but there are still few who convey it to the international
audiences.
I will continue my business of buying/selling Batik
cloths and Batik Spa. In every piece of batik I sell, there
will be information about it. I will gladly & proudly share
about Batik Indonesia to the international communities.

An Interview with Madame Janka Chlebova-Beckova,
Spouse of the Slovak Ambassador to Indonesia
by See Mun Leong-Suparno
T ell us about yourself and your family.
I live in Jakarta for more than 2 years. My husband has been posted here as the Ambassador of
the Slovak Republic to Indonesia. I'm the civil engineer, but as you know, during our posting my
role is to support my husband and actively represent our country. That's what I try to do. We have a big
family with 6 children and 3 grandchildren, which bring us pleasure and joy.
When did you arrive in Indonesia and when did you join WIC Jakarta? What do you like to
contribute and share with WIC?
I arrived in Indonesia on December 2018. It was my first visit to the country. I have never been
here before, but during our previous posting in the Netherlands, I quite often heard about Indonesia
from my Netherlands friends and I had
a desire to experience Indonesia. My
first impressions were pleasant and
positive, mainly thanks to the
surrounding kind and polite people. I
remember my first visit to WIC when I
was warmly welcomed by Almyra, Rita,
Kremena as well as later on meeting
Diksha, Mina, See Mun, Mary Ann and
other friends.
I appreciate the activities of
WIC very much, especially cultural and
fundraising projects. It was my
pleasure to participate on charity
bazaar with Slovakian goods like
ceramics, crystal and wine as well as
to be a member of Bazaar Proceed
Committee for distribution of
proceeds from the bazaar. We visited
a few schools with really poor
conditions. I am glad to be a part of
these projects to help those who
need it. At the same time, this allows
me to share part of Slovak culture
with WIC ladies. For art doesn't know
boundaries. It is one of the best ways
how to bring people together. Our
next activity is to auction the Slovak
watercolor painter’s artworks. The
main aim of the auction is to
generate funds to support the
education of poor kids.

Now I can do my hobby since my children are adult already. I like to do a lot of things - growing flowers,
gardening, ikebana making, interior design and sewing, but painting is my biggest love. It provides me
with amazing relaxation. Playing with colors, their combinations and movement gives me the joy and
inner peace.
What do you like about Indonesia?
I like Indonesia very much. I like Indonesian
people, their attitude to the life, their kindness to
each other. The people are very polite, friendly
and heartful. I had the opportunity to visit a
couple of unique places, like rainforests in
Borneo with protected orangutans and rhinos,
wonderful beaches especially in Nusa Penida
and others... We have visited a couple of islands,
which are unknown for tourists, like Seliu nearby
Belitung, Nias, Marathua and other ones
between Borneo and Sulawesi, where the nature
is untouched by modern life and where undersea
world is amazing. I see big differences between
regions, islands and people. On the other hand, I
always admire relations between people, their
faith, humbleness and smile, which are the same
everywhere in your country.
Tell me about your country.
Slovakia is located in the center of Europe and is
a part of European Union. We are a modern
country with typical inland landscape. It means
we have no sea, but we have attractive caves,
natural hot springs, wild nature with a wild
animals like bears, dears, wolves, foxes etc.
During winter, there are many possibilities for
skiing and after that you can use hot natural
bath. During summer season, the temperature is
the same like here in Indonesia, but the air is
dry. The best time for visiting is spring or
autumn. That time is suitable weather to visit
historical castles, museums, galleries and/ or
WIC Jakarta warmly welcomes dance and music entertainments. Nature at that
time is very nice. In spring, trees are blooming
Madame Janka of Slovakia mainly in white colors and in autumn, all forests
are colorful. Tourists also like to visit wine
routes, which are located in the South of
Slovakia. I hope, when the Corona drama comes to the end and there will be possibility to travel again,
we can organize common trip to Slovakia. As it was spoken already, "There is better ones to see than
many times to hear.”

Your journey in Art : Share your story.
I have enjoyed drawing since childhood, but
Art had a specific subtext during the socialism era.
I graduated from the Faculty of Civil Engineering,
where my drawing acquired more technical skills. I
returned to painting about 7 years ago, when we
had been posted in the Netherlands. This country
is the cradle of painting; therefore, it was quite
natural for me start to paint. I improved my skills
through YouTube learning programs. My teacher
was famous Russian painter, Leonid Afremov.
Madam Janka and her husband in Nias Island
The Ambassador of Slovakia H.E. Jaroslav Chlebo After my arrival to Indonesia, I have met Angela
and Madame Janka Schreiber, wife of our Honorary Consul. She
invited me to the watercolor painting club with
teacher Sandy Leonardo. Sandy Leonardo is an
Indonesian painter since 1994. He is a member
of the Indonesian watercolor association and
exhibited around the world (Italy, French, Japan,
China, Thailand, Korea, Hong Kong, Singapore,
Malaysia). From that time, I have switched to
watercolor. During the previous year, I became
a member of international association of
watercolorists. As a member of the Slovak

My favorite topics are flowers, but also architecture,
still life, portraits and nudes. I'm constantly looking for
new ways and styles for my creation. I paint for my
pleasure and to bring joy to others. Sunflowers are my
favorite motif. If I should answer your question, there is
no exact answer. The reason is somewhere deep
inside... You know, the sunflower follows the sun all day
long. She wakes up with the sun - when the sun rises,
the sunflower opens up and raises its head. When the
sun sets, the sunflower closes and bends to the
ground. She looks like the sun, full of energy and
smiling wherever she is - on a field or in a vase.
Sunflowers on a wall are like flowers and sun in a room.
They give us positive feeling, pleasure, joy and energy.
I love them so much!

What inspired you for the upcoming art exhibition?
During my holiday in Slovakia, I took part on a
plein-air with my colleagues from Slovak Watercolor
community. The idea of painting exhibition in Jakarta
started very spontaneously during our common painting.
Later our dream became true- thanks to our team and
sponsors, who support us. It was for the first time the
Slovak painters stage an exhibition in Indonesia. I do
hope that in the next step, the exhibition of Indonesian
watercolor artists will take place in my country.
The exhibition has been visited by around 100
visitors. Now we are preparing auction of exhibited
artworks. Proceeds from the sale will be given to support
charity’s projects.
What inspired me? I am always inspired by the Madame Janka and her husband at their
surrounding beauty of God’s creation surrounding as well residence
as by people and relationships between them. I would
like to use the rest of time in Indonesia in capturing a lot
of things that are different and sometimes a little bit
hidden.
Thank you, Madame Janka!

Two Views dari dalam Indonesia
by Madame Mira Gnjatovic
Once upon a time, when I was in the 6th grade of elementary school, the teacher asked us, "Children,
what do you think is the hardest thing to do?" Guided by the skill of the experienced professor, we
came to the conclusion that "the hardest thing is to start". I often remembered that in my work, while
sitting in front of a sheet of white paper, I wondered "how to start". It is again similar now under the
influx of ideas, possibilities and memories.
Well, first things first.
Who am I?
My name is Mira Gnjatovic. I was
born in Belgrade, Serbia, formerly
known as Yugoslavia. By
education, I am an economist.
During my working life of 33 years,
I have done several jobs in the
field of planning, first socio-
economic, and then urban.
In addition, I spent 9 years abroad
with my spouse, Slobodan
Marinkovic, a diplomatic
Ambassador of the Republic of
Serbia to the Republic of Indonesia
with whom I have one adult
daughter, Tijana Marinkovic.
To date, we have already been in
Indonesia for five years.
On this occasion, I would like to Mdm. Mira Gnjatovic of Serbia
point out that I have had a desire to
travel since my youth. As soon as I was old enough to travel on my own, I started traveling and
wanted to travel more and more. However, in the "hilly Balkans", as our cult poetess Desanka
Maksimovic sang poetically, it was not always easy. Some difficulties maybe prevented yet in some
other times, problems and work limitations appear.
Good luck followed me on that path as my husband was a supporter of travel, too. Later, our daughter
joined us, so that we quench our thirst for travel, together or separately, depending on circumstances
and interests. And so, here I am in Indonesia.

The Beauty of 4 Seasons in Serbia
And here I am in Indonesia.
Winter Just as the days at home become longer and more
Spring pleasant in the spring, here in Indonesia at the meeting
of two seasons, the precipitation decreases, the sun
Summer shines longer and more often. In both cases, nature
Fall wakes up, leaves and the flowers grow anew, the
animals let out their voices, the children make noise
and the adults murmur.
Experiencing Indonesia, I was captivated by the
landscapes, the spices, the evergreens, but also the
similarities with my country, despite the huge
differences in size, abundance, natural features and
geographical location.
Serbia is a continental country with 4 seasons while
Indonesia is an archipelago with 2 opposite ones; the
area of Serbia is only 4.6% of the area of Indonesia and
the population accounts just 3% of Indonesia's. This is
not where the differences end but the similarities
begin.
Serbia consists of 2/3 mountains and 1/3 plains.
Mountains are lower and gentler and are cold and
snow-covered during winter. This allows us to enjoy
sports and fun games that we call "winter spells", while
Indonesia is dominated by volcanic ones usually
draped in clouds and haze. Others are more or less
active, and most of the Indonesian mountains abound
in numerous high, sometimes wide waterfalls. Serbian
waterfalls are neither so numerous nor big, but they
are lovely and pleasant. Both bestow enjoyment and
refreshment, especially on hot and humid days when
someone wants get out of town.
The green color of young and yellow color of ripe rice
always revive in me the memory of green and golden
cereal fields of Serbia (wheat, oats, barley, rye). I see
cows, sheep, goats, chickens and even pigs on the
vast plains of Indonesia, as well as dogs and cats in
villages and cities. I wonder how it is possible that in
such different weather conditions, these creatures
could be so identical. Rain here, as in Serbia, overflows
rivers and floods fields, roads, houses, and sometimes
torrents destroy the infrastructure, but in peacetime,
rivers invite you to go rafting, swimming and camping.
Our spas and Indonesian hot springs are an additional
variety in each of these countries, but those in
Indonesia are more accessible outdoors all year round.

Historical Serbian Monasteries:
From the very beginning, Indonesia has embraced me
with the goodness and kindness of its people. Wherever Sacred Serbian Heritage
I go, I meet modest and cheerful people in a good
mood, curious and interested in us foreigners, as well. Studenica
Always smiling, conversations with them are full with Visoki Decani
many questions about where we come from, what kind
of weather do we have, how far it is from their tanah air Sopocani
(homeland), who are our family are and whether they
are with us in Indonesia or not. Even if they do not Church of Our Lady of Ljeviska
know you or have never even seen us before, the chats
are meaningful and usually end in taking photo-photo.
All the time I admire their style embodied in a calm
spirit, goodwill and gentle character that represent
Indonesia as a nation of happy people. (Later, world
researches related to the personal sense of happiness
of various nations confirmed my observation.) And what
else does a man in this land of beauty, goodness and
happiness need, except, as Kant would say, "the starry
sky above me and the moral law in me.”
Devotees of Zaman Kuno
The generosity of nature and the human need to
ascend to heavenly divine heights have endowed us
with countless ingenious creations and art collections
that still exist/stand to remind us of the values,
aspirations and achievements of our ancient ancestors.
This legacy shapes our ethical and artistic uniqueness
and leads us on the path of timeless values.
I recognize two categories of such heritage in particular.
The first category belongs to mental activity that is
found in Serbian expression in oral folklore, folk tales,
sayings and poetry, especially epic, which was highly
appreciated by the great German poet, Goethe. It is said
that he learned Serbian language only in order to
experience their poetic expression. I find a similar kind
of heritage in Indonesian stories and kakawins related
to, I would say, primarily ancient religion and related
topics from stories about deities and kingdoms to fun
stories of folk life, especially the afterlife whose most
common representatives are ghosts. They are written
on lontars in one of a dozen Indonesian scripts such as
Pallava, Kavi, Sunda, Java, Bali, Sasak, Lontara, Batak.
Even today, they are often retold or performed in a
special kind of traditional puppet theater such as
Wayang.

WOMEN’S INTERNATIONAL CLUB - JAKARTA JOURNAL 2022
Historical Serbian Monasteries: Another type of heritage are the objects of sacral
Sacred Serbian Heritage architecture that have stood for centuries, even more
than a millennium, resisting various natural disasters,
Church of the Holy Apostles invasions and conquests of numerous friendly and
Djurdjevi Stupovi hostile passers-by. So far, more than 2,000 such
Gračanica structures, immortalized mostly in churches and
Patriarchate of Pec monasteries, have been discovered in Serbia. Many of
them date from the 12th century. Their architecture,
icons and frescoes are of great importance and values
for the entire world culture and such are included on
the UNESCO World Heritage List.
The list includes the monasteries of Gračanica, Visoki
Dečani, the Patriarchy of Peć, the Church of the Mother
of God Ljeviska and the Church of the Holy Apostles
(Kosovo and Metohija), the monasteries of Djurdjevi
Stupovi and Sopocani, the Church of the Holy Apostles
Peter and Paul and the archeological site of the
medieval town of Ras and Studenica Monastery. In
addition to the monasteries, the list also contains other
sacral buildings (stećci), as well as values such as the
gusle/fiddle (instrument), kolo (folk dance in a circle)
and slava/glory (a traditional unique family custom
dating back to the pre-Christian era), remains from the
Roman and Celtic periods, the archeological remains
of the mesolithic and neolithic civilizations in Europe,
Vinča and Lepenski vir, and folk handicrafts.
Numerous religious buildings from the time of the early
kingdoms still stand proudly in Indonesia. Upon my
arrival here, I read that there were so many that "used
to cover the entire island of Java". Candis and Puras,
which date from the end of the first and the beginning
of the second millennium, bear the traces of the beliefs
of the people of that time. Even today, they are a place
of "pilgrimage" for believers, even more for the
admirers of the values embodied in them. Among them
are the objects that differ in size, affiliation,
significance and influence on generations of people,
especially the ruling class. These objects that are
recognized worldwide as particularly valuable are
placed on the UNESCO World Heritage List:
Borobudur Temple Compounds and Prambanan
Temple Compounds, Sangiran Early Man Site, Cultural
Landscape of Bali Province with Subak System as a
Manifestation of the Three Hita Karana Philosophy and
Ombilin Coal Mining Heritage of Sawahlunto, as well
as several natural parks. But in both countries, there
are more than 10 future contents on the UNESCO
Tentative Lists.

Indonesia President Joko Widodo receives the credentials of
Ambassador Slobodan Marinkovic of Serbia
According to my impression, people increasingly recognize these places as part of the eternal and
inspiring heritage that they purposely visit in order to "quench the thirst" from the source of
imperishable values, not just as devotees of the faith to which they belong or aficionado of
instagrammable sights.
Just a little more about my travels…
On my travels, I sometimes came across traces of the Serbian presence, without asking or expecting
it.
Thus in Hungary, I visited a small town of Sent Andreja (St. Andrew) not far from Budapest where in
1690, at the invitation of the Hungarian king and under the leadership of the Serbian Patriarch Arsenije
Čarnojević, 8,000 Serbian families fled the oppression of the Turkish invaders. Today, there are a lot of
significant Serbian remains, although only about a hundred Serbs still live there.
In Greece, I visited the Vido Island and its Blue Tomb, synonyms for the death and grave place of a
large number of Serbian soldiers after their heroic feat of crossing Albanian mountains, as well as the
place of treatment and preparation for a decisive offensive in World War I on the Thessaloniki front.
Also in Greece, I visited Zeitenlik, an Allied military cemetery and World War I Memorial Park. It
contains the graves of around 20,000 Allied soldiers. The largest part of the complex is the Serbian
Military Graveyard containing the remnants of 7500 soldiers.
In Vienna, I came across a monument to the reformer of the Serbian language, Vuk Stefanovic
Karadzic, and in New York, a square named after the Serbian-American inventor Nikola Tesla.
When I was in Tunisia, I walked along one of the central streets in the town named Josip Broz Tito. The
same thing happened in Phnom Penh. Finally, in Bandung, I visited a museum dedicated to the Non-
Aligned Movement where the roles of President Tito and Belgrade as venues of the first conference of
Non-Aligned Movement were described.

Surprises never end; they just followed. On Nami Island on the Mdm. Mia and her
Han River in the vicinity of Seoul, I followed a play on the daughter,
Belgrade stage, and in the theme park of the famous Korean
island of Jeju, I noticed a copy of the Krusedol Monastery from Tirana Marinkovic

Vojvodina. However, my biggest
surprise was the revelation in 45
Istanbul, whose forest bears the

Serbs are known in the world…
And now, following the traditional
path, I would like to have the
privilege of naming the most
important Serbian personalities of
my choice. I list them alphabetically.
Andric Ivo, writer, chronicler,
diplomat and winner of the Nobel
Prize for Literature in 1961 for the
novel Na Drini Cuprija (The Bridge
on the Drina).
Milankovic Milutin,
mathematician, astronomer, climatologist, geophysicist, civil
engineer and popularizer of science. He gave two fundamental
contributions to global science: 1.
His "Canon of the Earth’s
Insolation" characterizes the
climates of all the planets of the
Solar system, and 2. He explained
long-term climate changes on Earth
caused by ice age changes, as well
climate changes that can be
expected in the future.
Princip Gavrilo, as a member of the
Young Bosnia organization, in
which all three Bosnian nations
were represented, was a fighter for
liberation from Austrian colonial
rule in his native Bosnia and
Herzegovina, a world-renowned as
the perpetrator of the Sarajevo
assassination of the Austro-
Hungarian Crown Prince Franz
Ferdinand, which is taken as a
pretext for the beginning of the
World War I or the Homeland War
as it is said in Serbian countries.

Pupin Idvorski Mihajlo, Serbian-American
physicist, physical chemist, philanthropist. He is
best known for his numerous patents, including a
means of greatly extending the range of long-
distance telephone communication (a method
known as “pupinization").
Tesla Nikola, one of the greatest minds of the late
19th and the first decades of 20th centuries was a
Serbian-American inventor, electrical engineer,
mechanical engineer, and futurist whose works are
impossible to enumerate. Perhaps it is only
necessary to recall his contribution to the design of
alternating current (AC) for a remote power supply
system.
And let me add that these three greats:
Milankovic, Pupin and Tesla were the founders of
the organization from which the American National
Aviation and Space Administration - NASA will later
emerge.
Mdm. Mira Gnjatovic Relations between Serbia and Indonesia…
of Serbia Despite the numerous differences I have already mentioned, for
more than 65 years of diplomatic relations, Indonesia and Serbia
have nurtured and developed good and friendly relations. Thanks
to the principled policy of both countries, which is primarily based
on the United Nations Charter and the postulates of other
international documents accepted by both states.
Similar views on important issues of multilateral and bilateral
importance, regular exchange of experiences and views through
meetings of parliamentary delegations and multi-confessional
consultations are an important part of maintaining such good
relations.
This is reflected in the visa policy, which greatly facilitates the transit
and targeted travel of our citizens, the exchange of professional
staff and especially certain forms of full-time and ad hoc studies, as
well as realization of projects of common interest. One such project
of importance for mutual diplomatic relations has been going on for
years and it is partly realized for first epoch with the participation of
two national archives.
In the new future, we will meet after COVID-19.

Piya Sukchan: The Jakarta Journey
by Piyachanid Suthinont Sukchan
I accompanied H.E. Songphol Sukchan to Jakarta, Indonesia in the capacity of spouse of
Ambassador of Thailand to Indonesia. Ambassador Songphol’s term of office in Jakarta
started from May 2018-September 2021 (3 years and 5 months). Chigo, our furry son, is living
full time with us. Our daughter is working overseas and our son is working remotely in Thailand.
Both of them visit us in Jakarta
from time to time. They enjoy
Indonesian Rendang and
Suharti fried chicken.
After I completed my university
undergraduate and
postgraduate degrees, I joined
Thai Red Cross Society’s task
force where I worked in the
humanitarian/refugee program
for 3 years. I then worked for
EGAT- Thai electricity public
enterprise for a couple of years
before I took a 4-year unpaid
leave accompanying Songphol
for our first assigned posting in
Beijing (1989-1992). We were a
young family of 4 members at
the time with Chine (daughter)
and Jap (son).
London posting was 1996-2000
while Chicago as spouse of
Consul-General was during
2012-2015. This was where we
welcomed a new family member
—Chigo, the Corgi.
In between postings of Songphol,
I worked on contractual basis
with UN agencies, international
organizations, international NGO
and public organization. Most are
in fields of consultancy regarding
human resources, education,
development and training.

Personally I have passions in creating new recipes: plant-based whole food cooking or tonic herbal
drinks.
Our embassy teamed up to launch a “Thai: easy-to-cook
booklet”. This is part of the virtual series to celebrate Thai
Festival in August 2021. Thai cooking is fun and easy that
even Ambassador Songphol can do it, so does everyone!
Let Thai & Indonesian cultures make the perfect blend
through culinary arts! This smooth & perfect blend cuisine
is a warm heart-cooked gift from us to Indonesian friends.

What I like about Indonesia?
As a school girl in Grade 6/7, elementary level, I picked “Indonesia” as an
individual report for my geography assignment. I went to collect
information on Indonesia at the Indonesian Embassy in Bangkok. Imagine
that! Who knew, 50 more years later I am in Jakarta, Indonesia in person!
A blessed destiny indeed…. To me, Indonesia is a wonderful mystery and
delight.
With the 3-hour flight, you are never far from your home base, of course
until the pandemic struck in 2020! I feel homey here with people, food,
weather, etc. I am amazed with Indonesian traditions: batik, fabrics,
dances, Wayang,—all about cultures, really! I personally collected batik
pieces from each place visited. I have to build a new house to display
these collectibles. We were invited to a friend’s son wedding in Jogja.
What an elaborated Javanese tradition! I learnt about beliefs, arts,
history and civilization in one event! A crash course, indeed…
Diversity is an Indonesian strength. Jakarta is a perfect place to learn
about social and family values. Kemlu kindly organized quite a few
Mdm. Piya diplomatic tours. I was glad we managed to join most of them. Cities on
islands vary. I love Labuan Bajo, Komodo Islands, Raja Ampat, Lombok
(for pearl shopping) not less than Lembongan Island near Bali. Countless trips to Bali for us,
pleasure or business alike. Vibrant Bali makes me think of Phuket less and less…. Of course, for
Buddhists, Jogja is a must. No regrets. I can’t get enough!

In Southern Thailand, we have quite a lot of Indonesian WIC Jakarta happily accepts the

batik sarong, shadow puppet or Thai styled Wayang with from Madame Piya
slight modifications of stories and characters.
I am from the South. My father used to take me to see Thai
Wayang. He told me, they are from Java island made from
buffalo skin. My maternal and paternal grandmas wore batik
sarong at all times. I know now why it is like a Deja-vu when I
stepped on Indonesian soil on my very first day in Jakarta!
Our King Rama V visited Java 3 times in 1871, 1896 and 1901.
He had brought back with him a priceless collection of 307
pieces of Indonesian batik. The exhibition of his collection was
on for 3 consecutive years in Bangkok until 2020. Our King
Rama VII visited Indonesia in 1926. There are 2 royal
inscriptions at the Thai pavilion, Dago Falls, Bandung.
Now, what do I regret? Not having learned Bahasa well. I shall
definitely miss myriads of Indonesian coffee beans/aroma.
Apart from Batik, I also collect coffee from each city visited,
too. Ambassador Songphol found his new passion only in
Jakarta during the past 18 months (Cov19 permitted). Inspired
by Indonesian coffee, he turns to be a coffee roaster -cum-
brewer. I wonder his passion will move on to coffee grower or
not?!
Of course, what I miss most is my host country friends! Do
keep connected…
