Madame Piya and her family sends her love and thanks to WIC Jakarta!
"What I miss and cherish most are my
host country friends and my newfound
international friends from all over the
world. Jakarta is the best venue to
mingle with multi-cultural human
beings. There are so many social
activities to keep us abreast of all things.
These keep us closer physically and
virtually (during pandemic time).
Through WIC Jakarta circle of friends,
I survived and lived the life gracefully….
I owed WIC Jalarta ladies big time."

All the best, Mdm. Piya!

We are all vaccinated and ready to exercise.
We had a fresh start at 6.00 a.m. and were finished by 8 o'clock.

Chinese New Year Sharing
by See Mun Leong - Suparno
I am See Mun Leong- Suparno, originally from
Malaysia. I joined WIC Jakarta in 2018. My family
share mixed dialects. I am from Cantonese
descendants and my husband is from Teo Chew
descendants. My family celebrates Chinese New Year
as passed down from our ancestors. I have observed
my husband's family traditions closely by my mother-
in-law’s annual rituals.
Sometimes, I include my family’s heritage by making
Cantonese dishes for them. A fusion which makes
the Chinese culture richer.
This New Year, I prepared a "Big Bowl," also called
"Poon Choi”.
Poon choi or puhn choi (pronounced: pun coi
in Cantonese / pén cài in pinyin), is a traditional
Cantonese festival meal composed of many
layers of different ingredients. It is served in a
large wooden, porcelain or metal basin
called poon, due to the communal style of
consumption. The Chinese name, transliterated
as Poon Choi, has been variously translated as
"big bowl feast", "basin cuisine" or "Chinese
casserole”.
In the Poon Choi, there are ‘layers of blessings’. Homecooked Big Bowl or Poon Choi
The bottom layer is comprised of vegetables like
white cabbage, tofu and bean curd. The top layer
consists of roast duck, roasted pork, mushroom,
broccoli, Hokkaido scallops, Tiger prawns, sea
cucumber and abalone. They are stewed with soup
consommé.
My family really enjoy this homecooked dish. We only make it once a year for it takes three days to cook
Poon Choi.

WOMEN’S INTERNATIONAL CLUB - JAKARTA JOURNAL 2022
The other famous dish for Chinese New Year is "Yu
Sheng". It is a Chinese Year salad dish that
originated in Malaysia and Singapore. Singapore.
Every year, we definitely make or order this dish for
a Reunion Dinner and have it every day until Day 3.
We celebrate Chinese New Year for 15 days. The
last day is called "Cap Goh Mei”.
Homemade Yu Sheng - Celebrating at Home
The ingredients are shredded white radish and carrots, layered with special colorful pickles, seasoned
with five spices, oil, pepper and salt and then garnished with pomegranate, sesame seeds (to
symbolize many descendants) and Chinese crackers (for good fortune). In the end, we top the dish
with abalone or fresh sliced fish with a drizzle of plum sauce.
Our Homemade “Yu Sheng”
My daughter, Carina Adijanto,
and I assembled and decorated
the Yu Sheng.
60
WOMEN’S INTERNATIONAL CLUB - JAKARTA JOURNAL 2022
As a symbolism of unity in the family, we toss the
"Yu Sheng" together. The higher the better! With
the Yu Sheng well mixed, we share the festive
meal together.
As for this year of the COVID-19 pandemic, we
were not able to gather. We practiced social
distancing and had a family Zoom call together.
Normally before the pandemic, we would have a
big family gathering. For the next few days, each
family takes turn in hosting lunch or dinner
starting with my Mother-in-Law on the morning of
Day 1.
It is festive and joyous. Families and reunions are
Blessings from God.
Chinese New Year is all about family, thanksgiving, and love.
