I am in a very lucky position to be able to work with amazing students and project supervisors from across the whole of Yorkshire and Humberside. Every day I learn something new about the world of STEM, which is brilliant. My role is to enable enthusiastic, determined students with a genuine interest in research to participate in a Nuffield Research Placement with an expert in their field, helping safeguard the next generation of STEM researchers and professionals. During the application and selection process, I am the person who will be there to support students and project supervisors so that everyone involved can enjoy their placements and achieve a successful outcome. I aim to offer bespoke support and advice, as everyone’s needs are different. 2022 was another fantastic year for Nuffield Research Placements in Yorkshire and Humberside, with more wonderful supervisors from a diverse range of backgrounds offering placements. Thanks to the generosity of these project supervisors, students were able to access a fantastic range of experiences, developing new skills and a clearer understanding of STEM research and careers. What is a Nuffield Research Placement? Nuffield Research Placements (NRPs) are engaging, real-life research or development projects, where talented year 12 (or equivalent) students are placed at the heart of a UK host organization. They are a fantastic opportunity for students to apply skills and knowledge learned at school while providing a meaningful contribution to the work of researchers and industry professionals. NUFFIELD RESEARCH PLACEMENTS INTRODUCTION 5 Being part of NRP 2022 was extremely enjoyable, not only was it great watching the students on placement develop as researchers; but it also developed my skills as a project supervisor. I felt as though I came out of the process having learned more, which is only a benefit. Helping these students is incredibly rewarding as you see their progression into research, and you also learn from them as well. It was a great privilege to be part of the NRP 2022, and is something I hope to be involved with again in the future. 2022 NRP Project Supervisor We enjoyed everything about it - being able to have meaningful encounters with the students, give 1:1 careers advice, and seeing students grow in confidence. The recommendations presented by the students were of an exceptional calibre and we will be able to use some of their findings to support positive changes in our work. Thank you Nuffield students. Supporting the Nuffield Research Project is very rewarding on so many levels and we would definitely recommend taking part. 2022 NRP Project Supervisor "Do it! You never know who you could meet or what you might learn, what you may discover about yourself or the world. Life is full of opportunities if you are open to them, and this is an opportunity like no other." Personally, I was definitely feeling more comfortable staying in my box by not applying to be a part of NRP initially. However, after completing a research placement, I am glad that I applied because I gained invaluable experience that I wouldn't have been able to find anywhere else. I would definitely do it all again if I could and I hope that anyone who is thinking of applying does and seizes this rare opportunity. 2022 NRP Student Pushing yourself out of your comfort zone is the first step to becoming a well-rounded individual, and you will come out of your placement feeling much more passionate and confident about your work and communication skills. 2022 NRP Student 2022 NRP Student

Name: Murtada Dafalia NRP year: 2018 A-levels: Maths, Further Maths, Physics, Chemistry and an EPQ at Notre Dame Catholic Sixth Form College with last year being at Elliot Hudson College. Current study: Third year of Mechanical Engineering at the University of Leeds. Placement: How aerodynamic features of the car affect its performance in racing. Project supervisor: Professor Harvey Thompson from the University of Leeds. NUFFIELD RESEARCH PLACEMENTS NUFFIELD ALUMNI I took away a lot of skills from the experience, some transferable skills, as well as a lot of technical skills. I learnt how to research information. I had an organised plan for what information I needed to know so I could cover all the topics in my project. At the same time, I needed to keep track of the books and websites I was using, so I could reference them in my project. This skill really helped and made me much more confident when I started university. I also learnt about aerodynamics, which is a part of my degree course and has undoubtedly helped me when it has come up in lectures. Even if you decide not to go onto study what you have researched for your placement, it’s still important to mention it in your personal statement if you are applying to university or an apprenticeship application. The experience of a doing research placement will make you standout.. I can’t recommend the Nuffield Research Placement highly enough. As well as the skills I developed, I felt more confident going into Year 13 as I had a better idea of what I wanted to do in the future. Since my placement I have taken part in a 10-week summer internship at Rolls-Royce plc, which gave me a fantastic insight into working in a transforming business, the way they work and gain valuable work experience. Hear me talking about my Nuffield experience HERE. 9

We work with a wide range of employers, including universities and research institutes, local government and public sector agencies, tech and pharmaceutical companies, think tanks and market research agencies. Some of these organisations employ thousands of people, and some have a single-figure headcount. What they all have in common is a clearly identifiable research and development project, and a commitment to sharing their passion for their business with young people from their local area. For example, the Professor that I worked with has already offered me further opportunities to work with him post-NRP, so if you don't apply, you could be missing out on further expanding on the research you could be doing." "Apply, no losses and definitely some gain." "Definitely apply." "You lose nothing but gain so much by taking part." Supporting the Nuffield Research Project is very rewarding on so many levels and would definitely recommend taking part." "Just do it." "I would strongly encourage it." "I would absolutely recommend taking part - Paula offered great support and made the process very easy!" "I will encourage them to definitely do it.
