2017 Western Amateur Championship YARDS 442 — PAR 4

Skokie begins with a great example of what
Donald Ross described as a “firm handshake”;
a stern but fair test to begin your round. The
bunkers on the inside of the slight dogleg left
provide a risk/reward for the shortest line to the
par 4 opening hole. Carry the bunkers and have
a short iron for your second shot. A safer, less
aggressive drive will avoid the bunkers but should
still favor the left side of the fairway. The two-

tiered green is protected by high shouldered
bunkers on the left and the right. Beware of going

over the green as a steep drop-off leads to waist
length grass. It is very important to be below the

hole especially if the pin is on the lower tier.
You won’t lose ground to the field with a par.

YARDS 195 — PAR 3 HOLE 2

A mid to low iron, slightly downhill par 3.
Depending on the wind, the hole typically
plays about ½ club shorter than the yardage.
Two bunkers left and one large bunker right
surround the seemingly flat green. The green has
more slope from back right to front left than it
appears. Putts from the right side of the green to
the left side are much faster than they appear. The
opposite is also true, putts from the left to the right
go uphill and are slower than they appear. A tee
shot finishing below the hole is ideal. A scoring

hole where birdie is well within reach.

HOLE 3

2017 Western Amateur Championship YARDS 568 — PAR 5

Variation continues; three holes and three
different pars. The 3rd hole is a reachable rolling
dogleg left par 5. The ideal tee shot is a draw over
the middle of the first bunker you see, roughly 175
yards from the teeing ground. There is room to the
left but a small creek lurks all along the left side.

An angled row of bunkers bisects the fairway
beginning roughly 140 yards from the green. It is

difficult to see the green over the bunkers, and
there is a water hazard right, thus providing

additional challenges when attempting to reach
in two. For those playing #3 as a three shot hole,
the distance and target of the second shot should
be carefully planned to carry the fairway bunkers
and leave the best angle for a short wedge to the
flagstick. Greenside bunkers on the left and the
right make it difficult to get up and down if you are

short sided. The large green has several “mini
greens” making distance control extremely
important for your approach shot.

YARDS 441 — PAR 4 HOLE 4

Cross bunkers frame the tee shot of the 4th hole, a
medium length par 4 taking you from the southern

edge of the property back into the meat of the
course. The fairway is wider than it appears as
roughly 1/3 of the landing area is hidden by the
short bunker on the left. Longer hitters should

favor the left side of the fairway as there is a
bunker on the right approximately 280 yards from
the back tee. A well placed tee shot should leave a

mid to short iron for your approach. Another
challenging green with a false front and significant

slope on the left side of the green to a plateau in
the center. Deep greenside bunkers are
positioned both left and right.

HOLE 5

YARDS 193 — PAR 3

This par 3 is slightly uphill and, absent wind, plays
roughly ½ club longer than the actual yardage.

Most players will use a mid to low iron to attack
the perched green with deep bunkers on the front

left and right. The front half of the green runs
from back to front while the back half of the
green is reasonably flat. A front hole location
can be very tempting but the landing area is

small and the potential reward is not worth the
risk. Regardless of hole location, playing to the

center of the green is ideal and will leave a
makeable birdie putt in most instances.

YARDS 401 — PAR 4 HOLE 6

A short par 4 offering a choice for your opening
shot. The right half of the fairway is protected by a
bunker that is not visible from the tee. A long iron
or hybrid carrying the visible front bunkers should

put you in an ideal position keeping you short of
the aforementioned bunker and leaving you with a
short iron for your second shot. A more aggressive

line is hugging the left side of the fairway with a
driver, although this strategy brings the second

bunker guarding the right side of the fairway into
play. The large green has a spine down the middle
and a hole location in the front left or back right

corner demands particular accuracy. There is a
collection area over the green but, depending on
the hole location, will leave a difficult recovery. By

this point you are probably sensing a theme as
greenside bunkers protect the left and right sides.
One of Skokie’s most varied and undulating greens.

HOLE 7

2017 Western Amateur Championship YARDS 517 — PAR 5

Perhaps the easiest hole on the course; a reachable
par 5. A slight double dogleg, moving right

from the tee and left into the green. The right
side of the fairway off the tee gives you the best
angle for your second shot (but beware the right
side bunkers and other trouble far right). There
are two options to reach the right side: 1) shape
your tee shot left to right or 2) carry the trees on
the inside of the right corner. If you find yourself

on the left side of the fairway or in the large
bunker, it’s likely a three shot hole. Cross bunkers
short of the green must be avoided. The large Ross

green, an upside down saucer, breaks generally
from back right to front left. Don’t let the apparent
lack of undulation fool you, the green is quick and

presents a number of different challenging hole
locations. If the hole is front left just short of
the green is a much better option than
even a few feet past the pin.

YARDS 432 — PAR 4 HOLE 8

If the 7th hole lulls you into a sense of security you
are advised to wake up quickly as you make your
way to the challenging 8th hole. The tee shot of
the long up-hill par 4 is guarded by out of bounds
to the right and a large bunker to the left. The

aggressive line is directly over the bunker, while a
safer line favors the right side of the fairway with a

slight draw. The long to mid iron second shot
likely plays one club longer given the change in

elevation. The two stacked greenside bunkers
short right are no place to be. The first half of this
green is a false front with a steep slope taking you
back down the fairway. The putting surface is also

much deeper than it initially appears although
beware of being too aggressive as trees and out of
bounds are just over the green. The ancient green,
Skokie’s oldest, is among the most difficult to read.

Par is a great score.

YARDS 184 — PAR 3

The front nine concludes with a picturesque par 3
taking you back to the clubhouse. Two distinct

teeing areas offer different elevations and angles
into the back to front sloped green. The pond

looks benign although tee shots landing short or
on the front portion of the green with any amount

of back spin can find their way to the water
despite a collar of rough at the base of the hill
adjacent to the hazard. It is very important to be
short of the hole location given the significant
slope, and the green is faster than it looks back to
front. At the very least do not go over the green.

YARDS 417 — PAR 4 HOLE 10

The inward nine begins with a straightforward
medium length par 4 taking you back down to the
lower area of the course. No need to challenge the
two bunkers on the left as there is little to gain and
there is plenty of room on the right side of the fair-
way. A well placed tee shot will leave a short iron
into the receptive green. Two cross bunkers roughly

20–30 yards short of the green help frame the
approach shot. The green slopes significantly back

to front and it is very important to be below the
hole and avoid going over the green. A great birdie
opportunity to begin the second half of your round.

HOLE 11

2017 Western Amateur Championship YARDS 557 — PAR 5

Perhaps Skokie’s best par 5, with great risk and
reward options, #11 is a double dog leg par 5 that
parallels the third hole. The hole moves sharply
left and then right, with cross bunkers at both dog
leg corners. Cutting the corner off the tee requires
the correct line over the tall trees on the inside of
the dog leg. Just to the left of the tallest tree with a
slight draw should offer the best risk/reward. The

farther left the tee shot, the longer the required
carry, with the added risk of rough and additional
trees. From a well-placed drive you will have a long
iron/hybrid into a well-protected green. Reaching

this green in two shots on an aggressive line
requires execution of one of Skokie’s most
challenging shots. The creek to the right is

definitely in play and a bail-out to the left will
likely find a large greenside bunker. Depending on
the hole location, playing #11 as a three shot hole

could be the better option. The large green has a
number of subtle breaks. Definitely an attack hole
which will yield birdies or better, but important to

think strategically with each shot.

YARDS 228 — PAR 3 HOLE 12

Skokie’s signature hole. The long par 3 over water
is visually intimidating and offers a number of
subtle and not so subtle challenges. Long left is

the obvious “miss” but a shot left will likely find
the deep bunker that is not visible from the tee.
The green sits perched roughly eight feet above
the water level. Tee shots that carry the water but
don’t reach the green leave challenging “bunker

like” second shots out of the rough. The large
green runs at a slight angle from short left to long
right. Similar to the third hole, there are several

“mini greens” within the green.

HOLE 13

YARDS 552 — PAR 5

A very reachable par 5 running along the west
border of the property. The large bunker on the
right side is the ideal target from the tee. Carrying
the bunker with a slight draw will provide the best
angle for the second shot. The green is protected
by a pond short right and a large bunker on the

left. There is a narrow area between the pond
and the bunker to run your second shot up to the
putting surface but obviously not without risk. If

played as a three shot hole, the second shot
should target the area just short of the pond,
leaving roughly 100 yards for your third. The
green largely runs from back to front and has a

challenging ledge in the back left corner.

YARDS 448 — PAR 4 HOLE 14

The 14th hole is a demanding par 4 moving
slightly left to right from the tee to the green.
A penal lone bunker on the right side of the

fairway guards the shortest line to the hole;
carrying the bunker off the tee will take a well
struck tightly controlled drive, one of the course’s
most exacting tee shots. There is a tall declining
tree in the distance in the left rough that provides
an alternate/safer target. The putting surface is
protected by bunkers on both sides and two cross
bunkers roughly 20 yards short. The green has a
large shelf in the back left corner and a smaller,

lower shelf on the back right — both areas
provide challenging hole locations. The green

generally breaks from back left to front right.

HOLE 15

YARDS 348 — PAR 4

This is the first hole where par is the same as par
on the previous hole; although some may view
the 15th as a par 3½. The safe strategy is to
carry the bunker on the right with a long iron
leaving a short wedge shot into the green. The
more aggressive play is to attempt to drive the
green. The green is protected by large bunkers

front right and left leaving a small uphill path to
the putting surface. Long grass abounds bringing
a lost ball into play for wayward tee shots. Similar
to the 6th green, there is a spine running through
the middle of the green allowing for a number of
different hole locations. Be careful as the yardage
suggests an easy birdie opportunity but aggressive

decision making coupled with poor execution
could bring a much larger number into play.

YARDS 250 — PAR 3 HOLE 16

The longest par 3 measuring close to 250 yards
from the back teeing area. The two cross bunkers

are roughly 20 yards short of the green and
visually obstruct the two greenside bunkers.
Out of bounds left and a collection area short
right add additional challenges to the tee shot.
The green has several undulations and runs
rather severely from back to front. A beast

of a hole where a birdie will likely
separate you from the field.
