HOLE 17

YARDS 454 — PAR 4

No rest for the weary. The penultimate hole is
one of the most challenging par 4s on the course
moving from right to left with the green not visible
from the tee. The bunker that appears to be in the

middle of the fairway in the distance is a good
target. A more aggressive line will favor the left
side of the fairway although out of bounds awaits
an over-hooked drive. The second shot will likely
be a mid to low iron into one of the smallest greens
at Skokie. Large bunkers to the left and front right
protect the back to front sloping green. Yes, there

is also another false front. Par is a great score.

YARDS 464 — PAR 4 HOLE 18

We end where we began as the 18th green sits a
short chip shot away from the first tee. Arguably
Skokie’s most difficult hole, a demanding up-hill
par 4. The tee shot is challenged by out of bounds

to the left and two bunkers to the right. Ideally
the player will favor the right side of the fairway
with a slight draw off the tee providing additional

roll given the fairway’s slope. The second shot
will likely be a long iron and the approach shot
should avoid the deep front greenside bunkers.
The first third of the green is a false front; it is
not uncommon for approach shots landing on the
front of the green to come to rest down the fairway
leaving a difficult chip shot from a tight lie. The

back right two-thirds of the green is relatively
flat but can be deceptive in speed and break. A
par 4 will tie you with Gene Sarazen and secure
an imaginary one shot victory over Bobby Jones

and John Black at the 1922 U.S. Open.
