A LITTLE BIT ABOUT ME NAME: DARSHIKA DHARATI A/P SARAVANAN MATRIC ID: 012021070359 COURSE: BACHELOR IN EDUCATION (TESL) UNIVERSITY: MANAGEMENT & SCIENCE UNIVERSITY 1 Hi there! My name is Darshika. I am currently in my 7th semester. It has been a long journey for me in pursuing this course for which I am extremely thankful and grateful. I have selected to pursue Bachelor in Education (TESL) due to an interest I developed since I was very young. I got inspiration through my father and my family members who were and are teachers/lecturers. Growing up, I have seen them teach and educate students. I see them as role models as they made me appreciate education so much. Because of this reason, I aspire to become a teacher. Not just any teacher, but a fun and friendly teacher who is equally responsible as well as caring towards my students. I believe that because of all the motivation I received from my family members, I will become one of the best teachers that the students will look up to. That is what I hope that the future holds for me.
A DIVE INTO MY E-PORTFOLIO 2 As part of our Project 2 on the subject of Microteaching, we are supposed to come up with an E-Portfolio to record and list our daily reflections on each and every class of this subject. We were required to add pictures as pieces of evidence of us attending the classes as well as write what we learned by the end of the day. This E-Portfolio talks about the different topics of this subject, the variety of activities we performed as well as some insights on my very own mock teaching as well as my peers' mock teachings. By doing this E-Portfolio, I believe that it gives back a chance for me to go through how I can build myself better as an effective teacher. I have created this E-Portfolio with so much love and dedication and I hope it gives value to what my thoughts are and were about this subject.
WEEK 1 3
DAILY REFLECTION Date: 3 July 2023 (Monday) TASK / LESSON OF THE DAY: . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . Introduction to Microteaching Scheme Of Work Explanation The first day of the class went smoothly. Our lecturer, Madam Nirmala, introduced us to the subject and briefed us a little on how and why the subject of Microteaching is to be taken by future English teachers. She also explained the Scheme of Work, thereby giving us a small insight into the assessments. We were also taught the contents of KSSM and CEFR. We were told that it is important for us to conduct every class with the implementation of the lesson plan. We were also taught about the different types of teaching methods and strategies that can be applied in class in accordance with the student's proficiency and adaptability level. It is noted that as teachers, we have to understand the needs of the students and teach them effectively based on their levels. By the end of the class, we were given a few questions to help us learn more about the fundamental principles and concepts that are based on the textbooks and DSKP. By attending the first day of the subject, I understood that with every class, as a future teacher, the DSKP provided by the Ministry of Education should be taken into account, to accommodate the curriculum into the lesson plan to suit students from different forms. Venue: M0601 Class Time: 4.00 - 6.00 pm Lecturer: Madam Nirmala Devi A/P Rajo @ Rajoo 4

DAILY REFLECTION Date: 4 July 2023 (Tuesday) TASK / LESSON OF THE DAY: . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . Steps & Procedures of Microteaching Teaching Methods & Strategies Microteaching was the second class of the day. Madam Nirmala taught us the different types of teaching strategies that can be implemented in class according to students' learning levels. She also explained to us, the steps of how Microteaching should be conducted. From here, the advantages of Microteaching are that, we learn in an artificial way on how a class can be regulated and what can be done to improve the teaching and learning process. Apart from that, she also showed and taught us about the lesson plan. With every class, it is crucial to have a lesson plan as it would be easier for teachers to follow it as a guideline to educate the students based on the curriculum envisioned by the MOE. It is also advised that, we follow the content standards and learning standards as stated in the DSKP. From the lesson, it is perceived that activities should be coherent with the topic that is being taught. There should be enough activities that can make the students understand and learn on how to apply it in real-life situations. Besides that, along with activities, the appropriate method should be followed as the students can effectively understand if they have an interactive learning session. DAILY REFLECTION Date: 5 July 2023 (Wednesday) TASK / LESSON OF THE DAY: . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . DSKP Content 21st Century Teaching Strategies This is the first tutorial session for the semester, and the lecturer assigned was Miss Siti Hajar. At the start of the class, she brought in the lesson to learn about the DSKP. She mentioned key contents from DSKP that every teacher needs to know; such as the Content Standard, Learning Standard, National Education Philosophy, SBELP Framework, and many more. Moving forward, for the tutorial, we were given a task to discuss the 21st Century Teaching Strategies in a group of 4. I was paired up with Geethaa, Tanushri, and Thivyah. 4 of us discussed the five (5) teaching strategies and segregated ourselves to find the main ideas. We also came up with five (5) different activities for the 5 strategies listed. Our group listed the strategies of: Game-Based Learning, Experiential Learning, Project-Based Learning, Design Thinking, and Cooperative Learning. I took up the task of finding the key ideas and one activity for the strategy of 'Design Thinking'. After that, all of us went to the front to present to the entire class. We were told by our lecturer that we have managed to present new teaching strategies and suitable activities for each. We were really delighted with her comments and feedback, which will definitely aid us in enhancing our knowledge to create more effective learning materials for pupils. DAILY REFLECTION Date: 6 July 2023 (Thursday) TASK / LESSON OF THE DAY: . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . Lesson Plan stages Create Learning Objectives based on the Content Standard and Learning Standard For the 2nd tutorial of the week, Miss Siti Hajar taught us about the first half of the lesson plan which is the content standard, learning standard, learning objectives, main skills and complementary skills. These are the main key points that are needed to be in the lesson plan. It is said that the numbering of the content and learning standards are carefully to be looked at to avoid conducting the wrong lesson. She also told us that it is adviced to conduct one activity for one learning objective to make sure students achieve and understand the activity, as well as, know how it can help improve their proficiency levels. Furthermore, we then proceeded to do the task for the day which is to create an activity and a learning objective based on the content and learning standards. I coupled up with Geethaa to complete this task. We discussed and decided to create one activity each for main skill and complementary skill. We chose the topic of Special Relationship from the Form 3 syllabus to construct the learning objectives. From the task we did, there were many times we stumbled upon writing the correct learning objectives using the S.M.A.R.T method. We then presented our work to Miss Siti and our classmates, and Miss Siti gave us feedback to include a measurable amount for each learning objective based on students proficiency level. WEEK 2 12
DAILY REFLECTION Date: 10 July 2023 (Monday) TASK / LESSON OF THE DAY: . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . Learning Objectives Creating A Storyboard based on Bloom's Taxonomy For this period, our lecturer taught us about teaching and learning objectives. She mentioned that it is crucial for every lesson to have valid learning objectives. We learned about the S.M.A.R.T method. It is also important to make sure that the learning objectives made should be 100% student-centered. The teachers will be there to guide them but the students will be the ones to start and end a lesson by doing discussions, group work, or any other. With any lesson plan, the objectives should be specific to match the topic and students' proficiency level. For example, a learning objective is deemed unfit if it fails to achieve it such as if a student's proficiency level is low and the teacher gives them a task to debate with no help and guidance, it is most likely, that the student will not be able to achieve it and not get any learning from it. Apart from that, it is also told that if a class is not conducted because of any sudden issues, it is recommended for teachers to use in the next class as well as write in a reflection to make sure the class and lesson is aligned with the syllabus. It is also important for us to include the Bloom's Taxonomy levels in creating the learning objective. This is because, as a teacher, this is another way to assess the students proficiency level. Class Time: 4.00 - 6.00 pm Venue: M0601 Lecturer: Madam Nirmala Devi A/P Rajo @ Rajoo 13
Inside Out based on Bloom's Taxonomy as a reference for our storyboard creation. After the lecture was done, we were given a task to create a storyboard by choosing a movie and writing the 6 stages based on Bloom's Taxonomy. We as a group chose the movie Lion King. I completely created the storyboard using Canva and my group members helped in giving key points to be added to the storyboard. It was fun creating the storyboard in Canva as it gave me a chance to show my creativity as well as learn by applying a piece of knowledge. We put 6 frames to match up the 6 stages of Bloom's Taxonomy. Ultimately, it was a fun and interesting task for us to study the movie and rearrange what stages each scene might belong to. 14 The storyboard, my group and I created based on the movie The Lion King.

DAILY REFLECTION Date: 11 July 2023 (Tuesday) TASK / LESSON OF THE DAY: . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . Learning Objectives A.B.C.D. method learning Today I learned another method for writing learning objectives which is the A.B.C.D. method. This method is presumed to be easy and achievable to write the learning objectives to measure students' exercises or activities. We were also taught to use the method where the level of thinking applied by students should be Higher Order Thinking Skills (HOTS) although the task might be simple. We were also given various tips to use teaching aids such as Manila Card being used only for labeling or tagging pictures, Mahjong Paper being used to write key points or ideas, Sugar Paper for pasting papers, and Oil Paper for pasting or putting something interesting. After that, we were also taught on why it is crucial to share learning objectives and learning outcomes with students. The reason as to why teachers need to share with their students is that it is a way for students to know how their teachers are going to assess them based on the activities that they will carry out. Later that day, we also did a task where we would create our own learning objectives using the A.B.C.D. method. By doing various learning objectives using the method, I find that this method compared to the S.M.A.R.T method is way easier as well as doable according to students' proficiency level. This method does not complicate learning objectives and provides a more straightforward approach of what teachers would expect from the students. DAILY REFLECTION Date: 12 July 2023 (Wednesday) TASK / LESSON OF THE DAY: . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . Revised Bloom's Taxonomy Create learning Objectives based on A.B.C.D Method For the tutorial, we did the exercises again on creating various learning objectives based on the A.B.C.D. Method. This time, we had to create the objectives using the method as well as implement them using Bloom's Taxonomy verbs. We were given a task to write verbs and each group had to randomly pick 5 verbs from another group and create 5 learning objectives based on that as well as apply the A.B.C.D. Method. A.B.C.D. stands for Audience, Behavior, Condition, and Degree. This task was fun and engaging to do as it was a random selection of verbs and a draft of activities from other groups. It definitely took time for my group to think and come up with the learning objectives. We segregated our tasks where each of us took 1 stage from Bloom's Taxonomy and created 1 learning objective each for Set Induction, Activity 1, 2, and Closure. I was given the Bloom Taxonomy's stage (Apply). I created 3 learning objectives based on the given activity where pupils will be assigned to draw a plot diagram for the short story 'Cheat'. It took me some time to come up with a learning objective to make sure that the objective is achievable within the time allocated as well as look closely at pupils' proficiency levels. Lecturer: Miss Siti Hajar Binti Mohamed Naser Venue: M0803 Class Time: 9.00 - 11.00 am 18

We got good feedback and commentaries from Miss Siti as she mentioned that she could see the flow of the activities as well as the learning objectives. Overall, looking back at the 2 types of methods in writing learning objectives, I prefer the A.B.C.D method the most as it is not complicated and at the same time gives the teacher an idea of how to assess pupils based on their critical thinking and proficiency level. This method is more organized and is easy for teachers to create learning objectives. 19

DAILY REFLECTION Date: 13 July 2023 (Thursday) TASK / LESSON OF THE DAY: . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . Elements needed to make Set Induction as interesting and engaging for pupils This tutorial was taken over by Madam Nirmala to teach us about the interesting methods to be implemented in the Set Induction. There are 4 elements that have to be included in the Set Induction which are Attention Getting Method, Interest Method, Putting Lesson Context, and Advance Organizers. These 4 aspects should be demonstrated the moment the teacher enters the class. We were told that teachers should apply various interesting methods like dressing up or bringing interesting items to match the context as this pulls the pupil's attention into focusing on the lesson taught. Certain tips have been taught to us as this will definitely be helpful when we go for our practicum. For Set Induction, it is absolutely necessary for us to keep it simple and easy as this stage should only be conducted within 5 to 7 minutes. We can include visuals and facts as it can make pupils engaged rather than boring notes and extensive speaking. But at the same time, even though this stage of the lesson needs to be kept fun, it should also be meaningful to pupils. Teachers should always keep it realistic and experiential as it intrigues pupils to think creatively. Teachers are also encouraged to introduce fun activities which involve the 5 senses. By doing so, pupils would have a liking towards the lesson that is being taught. Venue: M0803 Class Time: 11.00 - 1.00 pm Lecturer: Madam Nirmala Devi A/P Rajo @ Rajoo 21

WEEK 3 23
. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . DAILY REFLECTION Date: 17 July 2023 (Monday) TASK / LESSON OF THE DAY: Stimulus Variation Robert Gagne's 9 Events of Instruction For this lecture, we were taught on Topic 4 which is Stimulus Variation. This topic is about the incentive measures a teacher takes to teach an effective lesson. We were introduced to Robert Gagne's Nine Events of Instructions. The 9 elements Gagne mentioned are how a lesson should be to give pupils a wellrounded education. The elements in Gagne's theory are Gain Interest, Inform learners of the objectives, Stimulate recall of prior knowledge, Present the stimulus, Provide learning Guidance, Elicit performance, Provide feedback, Assess performance, and Enhance retention and transfer. These 9 instructions are important to implement as it allows the teacher to assess and evaluate the pupils based on their activity participation and performance. Apart from that, the Stimulus Variation talks about movement, gestures, voice changes, focusing, changes in interaction pattern, pausing, physical pupil participation, and switching (oral–visual switching) which means that the moment the teacher enters the class, they hold the power to control the class environment. It is a teacher's responsibility to find ways to intrigue and engage pupils in the lesson taught. If a pupil is distraught or unfocused, it comes back to the teacher to see if they did not do a good job in educating the pupils. This is an important key that needs to be understood by every teacher. Class Time: 4.00 - 6.00 pm Lecturer: Madam Nirmala Devi A/P Rajo @ Rajoo Venue: M0601 24

. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . Our write-up of the task DAILY REFLECTION Date: 18 July 2023 (Tuesday) TASK / LESSON OF THE DAY: Robert Gagne's 9 Events of Instruction Exercise Discussion Create 5 teaching aids based on language skills for physical classroom Class Time: 11.00 - 1.00 pm Venue: LT A07/2 Lecturer: Miss Siti Hajar Binti Mohamed Naser 27 After that, we were taught about the different teaching aids and materials needed for classroom preparation. There is a vast difference between teaching material and teaching aid. A teaching aid is a tool where it helps conduct the lesson. Whereas, teaching materials are tools that are used to give a traditional or modern approach to teaching and learning. Later, we were given a task to find 5 teaching aids based on different language skills which can be taught in a physical classroom. Alongside me, 4 of my classmates worked on the task. We segregated our work where each of us found 1 teaching aid, focused on 1 language skill as well as created a suitable activity based on the criteria. This task was fun where we did not refer anything but solely used our prior knowledge and experience to think and complete. For this lecture, Miss Siti took over the class as Madam Nirmala had a meeting. We discussed our previous task where we as a group have to create an activity based on Gagne's 9 Events of Instruction. After discussing and presenting our points, we were given feedback to do a little improvement on the last instruction.

DAILY REFLECTION Date: 20 July 2023 (Thursday) TASK / LESSON OF THE DAY: . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . Assignment (Lesson Plan 1 and Lesson Plan 2 Presentation) Venue: M0803 Class Time: 11.00 - 1.00 pm Lecturer: Miss Siti Hajar Binti Mohamed Naser We have been designated to do 5 lesson plans for this subject's assignment. For this week we are assigned to present 2 lesson plans for the skills of Listening and Speaking. I and my 4 other group members discussed on the weekend of what type of activities would be suitable for the 2 skills. After many discussions over Zoom and Google Meet, we decided to keep a listening text activity for Listening Skills lesson plan and do a presentation based on writing creatively in an i-Think bubble map for Speaking Skills lesson plan. Since there are many groups to present; for each lesson plan, only 1 representative will present on behalf of the entire group. My group member, Thivyah volunteered to present for the 2 lesson plans we completed. After presenting the lesson plans, we received several feedback and comments from Miss Siti. For one of our lesson plans, we did 2 learning objectives each for main and complementary skills. It is said by our lecturer, that we should focus on only one objective per skill as this would likely be achieved by the pupils. If there are many learning objectives, then it will take time and most probably the pupils may fail to understand and not be able to achieve the learning objectives set. From her feedback, we understood that it is important to set 1 learning objective and do an activity that is suitable and likely to be achieved by pupils by the end of the class. 30

. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . DAILY REFLECTION TASK / LESSON OF THE DAY: Types of Questioning Techniques to be implemented in class For today's class, we learned the different types of questioning techniques that must and should be applied by teachers in schools. The reason as to why specific questioning techniques should be implemented is because it enables students and teachers to have an interaction as well as develop critical thinking when answering questions or statements. There are some things that a teacher should follow when implementing this technique. The first key point is that, the teacher should always address and respond to the questions the pupils are asking. This in a way should be put into practice as it gives clarity to pupils that the teacher is acknowledgeable as well as able to help and assist them with whatever they want and need. The second key point is that, it allows pupils to enhance their critical thinking. When a teacher directs a question to the pupils, it gives pupils a chance to answer based on their own opinions or perspectives. By doing so, teachers do get an idea of how to tackle pupils based on their answering methods. Apart from that, as a future teacher, there are certain tips and tricks that can be followed in pursuit when asking questions. The questioning techniques should be clear, unambiguous, short, and straightforward. This is because, it allows pupils to answer a question with much quality and assurance. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . DAILY REFLECTION TASK / LESSON OF THE DAY: Reinforcement Strategies Examples of the strategies that should be applied in class (Weekly Task) For the second class of the day, we were informed by our lecturer, that she is involved with a meeting and will not be able to conduct the class. Therefore, we proceeded to view a lecture recording on the new chapter of reinforcement strategies and then continued to complete a task related to the topic. There were 4 different strategies implemented in this topic which are about positive and negative reinforcements as well as positive and negative punishments. This is also regarded as a type of behaviorism theory where when one of these strategies is applied, a pupil's attitude or behavior has a sudden change. Among these strategies, there are a few examples and types that classify them into rewarding or punishing pupils. The reason as to why this strategy has to be applied in class is that it has a direct and indirect effect and consequences on the pupils. Reinforcements can be used to teach new skills, teach a replacement behavior for an interfering behavior, increase appropriate behaviors, or increase on-task behavior. By doing so, there are certain benefits the pupils can gain from. Reinforcement strategy creates a positive learning environment, alongside improving pupils' engagement and growth. It instils a mature thinking within themselves which allows them to evaluate a suitable behavior in a given situation. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . DAILY REFLECTION TASK / LESSON OF THE DAY: Assignment (Lesson Plan 3 Presentation) This is our 2nd time presenting our lesson plan to the class. The skill needed to be implemented in the lesson plan was Reading Skills. Together with my group members, we decided to write a lesson plan based on the Form 2 topic, Take Care. We inserted a few reading passages highlighting chronic health issues. We divided the workload into half where 2 of my group members created the lesson plans for the week and the rest focused on the teaching aids. This week was my turn in preparing teaching aids alongside with my groupmates Geethaa and Thenmozhi. We prepared the reading passages as well as decided to show some interesting materials for pupils to guess what the topic is about. I came up with the idea to bring some family medical books as well as show some medicines. My group members agreed to this interest-getting method. On the day of the presentation, my fifth groupmate Thaarani decided to present on behalf of the entire group. This was my first time working with her on this assignment. I would like to thank her for presenting with such grace. She calmly presented our 3rd lesson plan to our lecturer and the entire class. Miss Siti praised us for bringing interesting teaching aids to show the class as well as improving our lesson plan into writing learning objectives and explanations in such detail. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . DAILY REFLECTION TASK / LESSON OF THE DAY: The 4th lesson plan of the assignment was presented today. I decided to present today's lesson plan as I know the intricates and details, because I helped and aided my group member Thivyah in writing the lesson plan as well as creating suitable teaching aids, needed for it. We had a Zoom meeting to discuss what type of topic and activity would be suitable for the 4th lesson plan which highlights Writing Skills. We then proceeded to create activities based on the Form 3 topic of That's Entertainment. We had a lot of amendments and changes as we wanted to showcase a good lesson plan. I had an idea to implement envelopes to give some variety to the lesson plan. I also took out my time to buy some popcorn and find movie tickets as a way to get pupils' attention through the interest-getting method. The day of the presentation came. I was very tense and nervous to present as I wanted to show my very best with all the materials, me and my group members prepared. As soon as I hit the front to present, I presented with the best abilities that I had by explaining each and every activity as well as the teaching aids introduced. As soon as I was done, Miss Siti gave her comments on the lesson plan and on the way I presented it. Miss Siti happily praised us for an excellent lesson plan with a variety of teaching aids. She also mentioned that it is one of the best lesson plans that can be taken as an example. She also complimented me by saying that I was very good at explaining the details of the lesson plan. Hearing these comments from her was such a relief and a proud moment because only my group members and I know the pressure of amending the lesson plan at the very last minute to make it perfect. WEEK 5 44
. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . DAILY REFLECTION TASK / LESSON OF THE DAY: Today is the 1st class of Week 5. We were announced by our lecturer to prepare for our mock teaching and the first batch to start the mock teaching would be dated on the 3rd of August. My name appeared as one of the students to be presenting on the 1st day of the mock teaching. Besides announcing that, Madam Nirmala also said that this week would be the last week of going through the topics of Micro Teaching. Then, before proceeding to class, Madam Nirmala briefed us a little bit on the key points of closures in a lesson. But before continuing so, she got pulled into a meeting. Thus, she gave us a task to find 5 different ways on how to conduct an interesting closure. I coupled up with 3 of my classmates to complete the task. I suggested that a game of Kahoot can be an interesting method to conclude a class. This is because, educational games have a 2-in-1 benefit, as it improves pupils' knowledge skills as well as indulge their comprehension of a lesson in game-based learning. My task mates also suggested other interesting methods to do in a closure, for example, initiating a Mentimeter, asking probing questions to determine pupils understanding, and many more. 15 minutes before the class ends, Madam Nirmala enters the class to conclude the lesson for the day as well as discuss the answers for the task. A few students gave their suggestions and most of the suggestions were pretty similar to my group's answers. All in all, Madam Nirmala explained as to why a closure is a 'must do' in a lesson. By doing a closure, the pupils will be given an opportunity to express any concerns, ask questions and clarify their own understandings. As well as, it allows pupils to demonstrate to teachers that they have learned the content that has just been taught Date: 31 July 2023 (Monday) Closure in a Lesson Lecturer: Madam Nirmala Devi A/P Rajo @ Rajoo Class Time: 4.00 - 6.00 pm Venue: M0601 45
