Rather than conducting top-down training, it is our current student leaders that design and implement the
yearly programme in the form of a summer adventure camp on campus for their successors. With a wide range
of activities, such as city orienteering, treasure hunt, case study, experience sharing, self-reflection sessions and
so on, our student leaders get to build trust and hone resilience needed for the year of service ahead. Having
shed the sweat and tears during their service as student leaders themselves, these ‘trainers’ could guide their
junior fellows not only with very practical tips but a deep sense of understanding and even empathy. These,
more important than any technical ‘strategies’, are the essence of true leadership in the wider world.

Academic learning can be beyond classroom and regular lessons. They can also be picked up
in a more light-hearted manner and carried out by students. Different academic departments have
mobilized students to organize academic game booths during lunch hour.

The Old Wing playground was transformed into an open-air mini laboratory, in which students
were shown hologram, 3-D images that had been projected and captured on a 2-D surface. Students
were also guided to make their own bouncing balls. Simple yet scientific, the activity left students in
awe of how sciences are just around us.

Hydroponics
Hydroponics is a method of growing plants without soil by using mineral nutrient solutions in
a water solvent. The hydroponics project in Carmel is itself a novelty in multiple senses: a modern
gardening technique, a newly installed planting system and an additional Other Learning Experience
– all to serve only one purpose: to let Carmel students experience growing and harvesting their own
food even in school.
This project is itself an experiential learning experience and has imparted insightful life
lesson: As outdoor hydroponics relies much on climate, students realize it is with God’s grace and
providence, rather than human power, that we can reap abundant harvests.

Origami Class
A few years ago, a book about Origami caught the attention of several
students during their non-fiction reading lessons. Soon afterwards,
they became Origami lovers. From simply enjoying a
personal interest, they make leaps in promoting such an
art, such as by conducting workshops – sometimes even
in English in collaboration with the English Ambassadors
– for their fellow students.

Swedish Class
Initiated by a student who has been a self-taught Swedish learner, the Swedish Class
has been a refreshing addition to students’ exposure in the past few years. In the class, the
once lone learner has evolved to be a competent tutor helping his schoolmates pick up the
Nordic language and get a glimpse of the Scandinavian culture.

Horticulture Club
These years, students across forms shoulder the responsibility of beautifying the campus.
Students from the Horticulture Club have been taking care of the school’s rooftop garden, in which
we grow a variety of organic crops, including rosemary, ginger, roses, pumpkins and eggplants.
Students also take the initiative to prune and maintain other plants in school so that students and
staff members can enjoy a green campus.

| Career and Life Planning:
a Professional Development School |
We felt privileged to be commissioned by the Education Bureau to become
a Professional Development School (PDS) in 2014 with our project entitled ‘Life
Planning and Career Guidance Services for Secondary Students – a Paradigm Shift’.
In the past five years, we led professional sharing on our practices and expertise
in career and life planning with thirteen partner schools. We met approximately ten
times a year with each school to carry out the following:
• teacher training on using career tools like ‘Finding Your Colours of Life’, ‘Career
Mapping’, ‘Career Interest Inventory’ and ‘DreamCrafter’,
• individual/group career guidance,
• collaborative lesson planning and observation, and
• joint-school professional development programmes.
We also participated in one another’s career activities and shared resources
and experiences, fostering interactions amongst the partner schools and eventually
building a professional community.

We, as the PDS, do not only give but also gain in our professional capacity through the scheme.
We went overseas for visits and conferences, which increased our exposure, ultimately empowering
us to guide our students better.
But what is most rewarding is not our own professional enhancement, but the interactions
with our students, who are from various backgrounds and have diverse interests, abilities, dreams
and stories. We feel strongly that each of them deserves and needs guidance in his educational
and vocational pursuit. We hope that the PDS Scheme will continue and benefit a greater pool of
students in Hong Kong.

Charity and service are age-old concepts yet new life could always be breathed in it.
Carmel has a proud track record in connecting with and serving our neighbourhood; from the
participation in the territory-wide Community Youth Club (CYC) for over 20 years, to the internal
Volunteer Quotient programme in the past decade to the newly launched VolunPeers (VP) group
now, our endeavours in voluntary services have never ceased to improve with ever-innovating
elements.
The VolunPeers (VP) group comprises the serving volunteers and peer counsellors, in an
attempt to spark synergy. Indeed the outcome is very encouraging with around 20 programs, run
every year and serving children, the elderly, the homeless, animals and the like, reaching way beyond
3000 service hours annually. These community services can promote students’ personal growth and
their understanding of the people they serve. They serve because they love.

| System Innovation and Talent Education Project | Teachers from Taiwan

(SITEP) (系統創新.人才培育計劃)
SITEP is a joint programme between the Quality School Improvement Project (QSIP) of the
Chinese University of Hong Kong (香港中文大學「優質學校改進計劃」) and the National Academy
for Educational Research (國家教育研究院) of Taiwan, with the aim of liaising professional exchange
between personnel of the school management and teachers from Hong Kong and Taiwan.
On 13 November 2018, 20 teachers/educators from Taiwan, led by the CU QSIP Team, visited
our school. After a campus tour led by our student representatives, our guests visited our S.6 Biology
and S.4 Chinese Language lessons. It was some very fruitful exchange, especially in the pre-lesson
briefing and post-lesson discussion.
On top of that, our guests were also engaged in other school activities, such as the School
Policy Forum during lunchtime, meet-up with student leaders, as well as a briefing of our school-
based professional development mechanism.
The visit indeed facilitated mutual understanding Fruitful interactions between the guests and our students
of the education systems, rationale and practices
in Taiwan and Hong Kong, and has laid a strong
foundation for more exchange to come. For one,
our Head of Biology Department as well as Chinese
Language teacher made a reciprocal visit to Taiwan
from 27 November to 1 December.

‘Go the Extra Mile’ was one of our
major concerns from 2015-2018 and we
have taken it quite literally. Multiple teams
and units have stepped out of the Hong Kong
borders, both culturally and even geographically,
sometimes not only miles but oceans apart, into
unfamiliar territories to embrace both the challenges and rewards.
Irish-Hong Kong Cultural Exchange
We forged friendships with Ireland in the sense that our students
Percy Chan (S.3, 2016-17) and Cyrus Leung (S.3, 2016-17) were named
Student Ambassadors of the Consulate General of Ireland in October
2016. They joined a number of events to learn about Irish culture as
well as the Ireland-Hong Kong diplomacy and trades.

Having gained much from their ambassadorship, Percy and
Cyrus delivered an award-winning presentation on the visit of Irish
Higher Education Institutions to Hong Kong. They were gifted
something truly special and even exotic – a mini-concert conducted
by an Irish musician Miss Deirdre Chárthaigh at our school. Miss
Chárthaigh, accompanied by the Deputy Consul General Miss Isobel
O’Connor, played beautiful pieces with the Irish harp and concertina.

Meeting students from Seoul National University
The influence of South Korea on our students surely can go beyond entertainment and cuisine.
It can be in the form of intellectual exchange on campus life and education systems at large. Our
students, many of whom being fans of Korean culture, were indeed thrilled to host the students
from the College of Education, Seoul National University on 8 February 2017.
Our Korean guests first took a campus tour led by eight of our student leaders, then went on to
visit Biology, ICT, Accounting and History lessons.
The programme ended with a more casual after-
school chat attended by about 30 students from different
forms. It was very interesting to hear what our guests had
to say about their homeland and Hong Kong, especially
in terms of the similarities and differences in the two
education systems and respective school lives.

Success not only comes from inheritance, but also stems from innovation. Our music teams
have been thriving and spangled with glitter of innovations in recent years. Special highlights
involve external training programmes, countless performances of various scales and exchange tours
on foreign lands.
Our choristers took part in the Hong Kong Composers’ Guild QEF Project Music Composition
Training Program. Rather than just interpreting and performing pieces by others, they got
professionally trained by a university professor to compose numbers of their own.

The Choir also participated in the LCSD Musical Project organized by the HK 3 Arts Musical
Institute to stage a live musical performance in Tuen Mun Town Hall, quite a leap from choristers’
comfort zones of choral singing. The same applies to our Handbell and Handchime Teams who have
taken part in various local events such as Ringing by the Candlelight and the Song of Life, organized
by Asia International Handbell Association (Hong Kong).
To look beyond, our music teams have embarked on journeys in multiple regions, for instance,
Singapore, Japan and Taiwan, to perform in concerts and church services, as well as to appreciate
the hosts’ performances. Such exposure and exchanges have broadened our international horizons,
a bolder step to ignite innovation.

New Zealand English Immersion Tour
Fragrant air, green pasture, flocks of sheep, an azure sky… are the
instant images popping up in everybody’s mind when hearing ‘New
Zealand’; and they are indeed what our English Debating Team and
English Ambassadors had experienced in the week-long immersion tour
in Auckland in June 2018. The refreshing trip was thanks to the generous
sponsorship of 12 air tickets by the Hong Kong Airlines as our students
took the initiative to apply for its social corporate programme ‘Embrace
the World’.
On a magical journey in the magical land - the Hobbiton Movie Set
We did not only get soaked in picturesque scenery, but also the
English-speaking and multicultural environment. The tour has proven to
be an eye-opener for our students to appreciate the preservation of the
indigenous Maori population and lifestyles. Rated as one of the friendliest
and most liveable countries, the island country has much to demonstrate
in nature conservation and human interactions.

Venture Scout Switzerland Tour
The values that scouts celebrate, such as service, compassion, and practical outdoor activities
are universal. Eager to be connected to the global village of scouts, we took the initiative to apply
for government funding for an exchange tour to Switzerland in mid-2017.
Our Venture Scouts were successfully granted the International Youth Exchange Funds worth
HKD 200,000 by the Home Affairs Bureau. It was a packed 12-day trip with our footprints left in
Zurich, Zermatt, Bern and Kandersteg International Scout Centre (KISC) for a wide range of scouts-
related activities. We attended the local Scout troop’s 90th anniversary celebration, visited a local
high school and university and even climbed the Matterhorn! Our most unforgettable evening was
the campfire night, in KISC, hosting scouts from around the world. The campfire kindled global
friendships.

Over the past years, the Robotics Team participated in various international Robotics
competitions in China and foreign countries. We have participated in competitions including World
Robot Olympiad (WRO), First LEGO League (FLL) and FIRST Tech Challenge (FTC). Our footsteps
can be traced in different countries like Thailand, India, Denmark, Australia and the U.S.A. We make
full use of every chance to exchange ideas and befriend peers we meet overseas. Not only can we
enhance our skills in Robotics, we can also immerse ourselves in the global community and realize
that no matter where we are from, our passion for Robotics unites us all.

活動,讓家長整理自身的成長故事,反思教育兒女的方向。
「家長教育」活動內容包括講座、個人成長工作坊、聚焦小組。講座的內容包括向家長介紹家
長教育的核心價值、如何與青少年子女同行等,家長和老師積極參與這些講座,並積極應用所學。
個人成長工作坊,讓家長有機會整理自身成長故事,從中反思如何教育兒女。部分家長更獲邀參加

inheritance to his children’s children”. (13:22)
Our founders and predecessors have left us abundant
inheritance upon the establishment and development of
this school in the early days, so have many succeeding
generations of alumni as donors, supporters, school team
coaches and staff members. These good men have left
inheritance to children’s children of this blessed school.

校友會 迦密中學校友會於一九七二年成立,
成立初期發展不錯,但後來因種種
原因,停止了活動一段時間。後來一
班熱心的校友,於一九八九年一月二十
八日重新組織校友會,校友會遂一直穩步
發展至今。校友會一直以來秉承校訓的精神,促
進校友與母校的情誼,保持校友之間的聯繫;校友會又回饋母校,致力讓
學弟妹有更好的學習環境和經歷。一九九六年成立的「迦密中學校友會基
金」,後期更發展為「迦密中學校友會慈善及教育基金」。二零一四年,
適逢學校的金禧校慶,一眾校友更踴躍捐助,捐出二百萬元,支持學校學

As the famous and motivating hymn goes, ‘Now, as you hold the
light, Keep the flame alive’. It sketches perfectly the vocation of many
‘returnees’ in Carmel. They are our alumni teachers, who were once
students nurtured in the Christian education and now get handed
the torch to ‘light the way for all who follow’. They are the very fruit
this school reaps and are called to bear more. To our founders and
many faithful servants here, witnessing generations to rise, return and
reciprocate is probably the meaning and beauty of everything.
