School Teams

Many of our school teams literally started
from scratch; yet the founding advisors still
tirelessly ploughed the soil and sowed the seeds.
From humble beginnings to established teams, the toil
has not been in vain; the fruit it has borne is generations of excellent team
members with remarkable achievements. But what’s even sweeter is
that these fruits return to their root so that their younger fellows
can blossom ever more promisingly. Hail to the alumni
coaches for remembering their good old days and
reciprocating the teams with wisdom, experience,
techniques and most of all, love and bonding
that transcend their school years.

melodious notes from our handbells.

The seed of this unique musical instrument was
sown in Carmel around a decade ago (the school
Handchime Team was founded in 2008 and Handbell
Team in 2013), and it has been cultured with
teammates’ passion and commitment throughout all these years. Never would one keep anything
learnt on the Team, ranging from handbell ringing techniques to interpersonal skills, and more
importantly, teamwork, to oneself.

| Orchestra |

Established in 1985, our Team has transformed from a mere brass band into a full orchestra
with both a symphonic band and a string section.

Our Team highly values inheritance. The school annual concert held every summer is an
example. The organizing committee is formed by members of all music teams. Students play a
leading role in the preparation while our teacher-in-charge gives advice. Also, in the orchestra
committee, S.5 and S.6 members assist the junior members to ensure that they have enough skills
and experience in leading the Team.

Notes alone could never strike a chord in one’s heart; however, when rhythm, notes and
tempo come as one, music becomes a universal language of mankind. Each and every one of the
Choir members is a musical note, pieced together into chords and music pieces through unity
and the spirit of inheritance.

| English Debating Team |

Heated Debates, Cool Debaters, Warm Coaches
The True Legacy: Team Spirit of Teen Speakers

Entering the millennium, our former Principal Mrs. Leung
Li Po Ching envisaged the new generations of Carmel students as
eloquent English speakers and thinkers. Such a vision was seen
somewhat bold back then; nevertheless the English Department
managed to garner the resources to build the English Debating
Team in 2002. Carmel has since then been prided as one of the
pioneering schools to have a school team in English Debating,
especially one with such long years of history. For nearly two
decades, the Team has grown and flourished, thanks to the
tireless dedication of the advisors and the alumni coaches. From
an innovative idea to a prime example of inheritance, the English
Debating Team has nurtured generations of English debaters,
orators, lawyers, doctors, architects, university lecturers,
government officials, teachers and professionals in different
sectors, reciprocating not only the Team, the school, but also
society at large.

| Drama Team |

The Carmel Drama Team was founded in 1976 to nurture
students’ stage performing skills and their appreciation of
performing arts. The Team staged their annual Chinese drama
performance, participated in the Hong Kong School Drama
Festival and coordinated the Inter-House Drama Competition
to cultivate students’ interest in the beauty of performing arts.
Meanwhile, the Carmel English Drama Team was established
in 2003. The two drama teams coordinated and participated in the Hong Kong School Drama
Festival in alternate years.

Alumni’s support has been the Team’s invaluable resources. The spirit of inheritance is
shown by alumni across graduation years being willing to return to Carmel to offer help in the
production of the drama performances. They help current members with script writing, casting,
directing and backstage support.

Not only does the Carmel Drama Team demonstrate the spirit of inheritance
through alumni’s support, it also plays a role in the inheritance of the history
of our community. In 2016, the Team went on a remarkable venture when it
was invited to take part in an oral history theatre show ‘Nostalgic Memories
of Hung Hom’, which was staged by the Chung Ying Theatre Company and
senior citizens from SKH Holy Carpenter Church Elderly Community Centre.

| Scouts | Identical smiles of accomplishment, shared by teachers, alumni and Scout leaders

Over 30 years, our 93rd Group has expanded much in size, with over 100
members now in total serving in the three divisions, namely Scouts, Venture Scouts
and Rover Scouts.

As the saying “Rome wasn’t built in a day” goes, the shining achievements
we have got over the years are not one man’s credits but built upon
the collective efforts of our members and leaders.

The training and development of scouts in our Group resembles apprenticeship. When new
members join us, they are assigned to be under different patrol leaders who guide the newbies to
know Carmel and our Group. The leaders also regularly evaluate the performance with
members to help them extend their social network and share the values of
scouts, such as persistence, charity and service.

To look further, a new division, Rover Scouts, has been introduced in the
93rd Group. It is for our graduates, who are more experienced Scouts aged from
18-26, to coach their younger fellows in an all-round manner, from technical
skills, social experience to life values and attitudes. Years later, as the juniors
mature, they will in turn shower others with the care and kind support they
once received. How beautiful the picture would be.

| Robotics Team |

Our Robotics Team has just celebrated its 16th anniversary. Our core values such as
professionalism, collaboration and inheritance have remained as the pillars of our Team.

The Robotics Team was established in the midst of sorrow, when SARS (2003) broke out
in our city. Our alumnus Mr. Matthew Chee, who lost his family member in the plague, went
through the trauma with a compassionate gesture of our teacher. The Design and Technology
teacher Mr. Cheung Chi Mau kindly gifted him a box of LEGO, which comforted Matthew at the
time and marked the beginning of our Robotics Team.

Such a ‘pass-it-on’ spirit has been
fostered since then. At tournaments,
our senior members cheer for the
juniors. The alumni overseas warmly
receive their fellow Carmelians when
the Team joins international events in
their towns.

Such a spirit indeed stems from our
deep sense of gratitude for the support
and sponsorship from many parties.
It is only thanks to their generosity
that we can continue to expand, afford
advanced equipment and take part in
overseas competitions, like the World
Robot Olympiad (WRO), FIRST
LEGO League (FLL) and FIRST Tech
Challenge (FTC).

Not only does our Robotics
Team stimulate the creativity of our
future scientists and engineers, but it
also continues cultivating many fine
qualities in leadership and in life.

leisure hobby, but as a competitive sport on behalf of our school. For 27 years, the sleek figures
of students jumping up and down and hitting the shuttlecock with rackets have been a common
sight in our playgrounds. The Team has not only fostered a dynamic culture of badminton playing,
but also brought up generations after generations of avid players in inter-school competitions.

have been many changes, such as the coaching personnel and styles; yet what has remained
steadfast is the mission to establish members’ lives in Christ through volleyball. This is done
by upholding sportsmanship over victory, winning beautifully and losing gracefully, taking the
initiative to solve problems as well as communicating and cooperating maturely.

Inheritance | Story-sharing Corner

Story-sharing Storytelling is an age-old human activity,
Corner so is our English Story-sharing Corner which
has well embarked on its 23rd year of service
since 1996.

Merged seamlessly with the territory-wide
Extensive Reading Scheme (ERS) which includes teacher-student
conferencing, the Story-sharing Corner is a step forward involving not only
the S.1-2 readers (the story sharers) but also the S.3-4 committee members. Every fortnight, as
students share freely the English stories recently read with their peers, it gives another purpose
to their reading and empowers them to speak meaningfully in English. With attentive listeners,
the young sharers are more motivated to share and to read, forming a benign cycle. The Story-
sharing Corner has evolved to be a cradle of avid English speakers and readers indeed.

The healthy cycle is not only
manifested within individual students
but across forms as well. Those who
used to be the star story sharers in
their junior years assume the new
role as committee members to listen

to tales narrated by their younger
fellows. That is the best reciprocation
the Scheme can have indeed.
