Introduction
I will like to thank you for purchasing this ebook on how to create, build and design a
professional WordPress Blog with ease. You may ask: Who am I to teach you how to
build a WordPress Blog?
If you do not know me before, I am Dennis Alabi, a Nigerian Pro-Blogger, Netprenuer,
Web Consultant, Blog Developer and a Webmaster and a facilitator at many online
business seminars. I have created and designed several websites ranging from business
websites and blogs to forums, and I have created, pimped and troubleshoot WordPress
blogs for bloggers alike. I am a very simple guy who has been helping a lot of Nigerians
and bloggers across the world to build, and pimp up their blogs and make it look
professional.
However, I find out that not everyone have enough cash to pay for my services. So I
thought of helping those people out. I decided to take my time to write this
comprehensive guide on how to create and design a WordPress blog like a professional
does, with ease, and with a lot of pictorial guide. I believe after reading this guide, you
will be able to create and design your own WordPress blog with ease, and without any
help from anybody. Just make sure you read every line in this ebook before starting with
your own blog.
Thank you once again.
Best Regards,
Dennis Alabi
Chapter Two
What is a Blog?
To make money online via Google Adsense, you need to become a BLOGGER! Yes you
need to blog. This is because, to get into Google Adsense Program, you need to have a
website or blog that you can place your Adsense adverts on so people can click on it.
Don’t get me wrong, it is not compulsory you become a blogger before you can make
money with Adsense, but making money with Adsense becomes very easy while being a
blogger. You can have some other form of websites like a forum, social networking sites,
etc and still make money with Google Adsense.
In one phrase, blogging is an art of writing. No writing, no blogging.
Blog
According to online Wikipedia a blog is a truncation of the expression weblog; it is a
discussion or informational site published on the World Wide Web consisting of discrete
entries ("posts") typically displayed in reverse chronological order (the most recent post
appears first). Until 2009, blogs were usually the work of a single individual,
occasionally of a small group, and often covered a single subject. More recently, "multi-
author blogs" (MABs) have developed, with posts written by large numbers of authors
and professionally edited. MABs from newspapers, other media outlets, universities,
think tanks, advocacy groups, and similar institutions account for an increasing quantity
of blog traffic.
The rise of Twitter and other "microblogging" systems helps integrate MABs and
single-author blogs into societal newstreams. Blog can also be used as a verb, meaning to
maintain or add content to a blog.
The emergence and growth of blogs in the late 1990s coincided with the advent of web
publishing tools that facilitated the posting of content by non-technical users. (Previously,
knowledge of such technologies as HTML and FTP had been required to publish content
on the Web.)
Majorities are interactive; allowing visitors to leave comments and even message each
other via GUI widgets on the blogs, and it is this interactivity that distinguishes them
from other static websites. In that sense, blogging can be seen as a form of social
networking service. Indeed, bloggers do not only produce content to post on their blogs,
but also build social relations with their readers and other bloggers. However, there are
high-readership blogs which do not allow comments.
Many blogs provide commentary on a particular subject; others function as more personal
online diaries; others function more as online brand advertising of a particular individual
or company. A typical blog combines text, images, and links to other blogs, Web pages,
and other media related to its topic. The ability of readers to leave comments in an
interactive format is an important contribution to the popularity of many blogs. Most
blogs are primarily textual, although some focus on art (art blogs), photographs
(photoblogs), videos (video blogs or "vlogs"), music (MP3 blogs), and audio
(podcasts).
Microblogging is another type of blogging, featuring very short posts. In education, blogs
can be used as instructional resources. These blogs are referred to as edublogs.
On 16 February 2011, there were over 156 million public blogs in existence. On 20
February 2014, there were around 172 million Tumblr and 75.8 million WordPress blogs
in existence worldwide. According to critics and other bloggers, Blogger is the most
popular blogging service used today. However, Blogger does not offer public statistics.
Technorati has 1.3 million blogs as of February 22, 2014.
Generally speaking, you will observe that blogging stand on ‘writing’. Well don’t be
scared if you cannot write articles, I’ll show you how and where to get articles to post on
your blog with ease.
History
The term "weblog" was coined by Jorn Barger on 17 December 1997. The short form,
"blog", was coined by Peter Merholz, who jokingly broke the word weblog into the
phrase we blog in the sidebar of his blog Peterme.com in April or May 1999. Shortly
thereafter, Evan Williams at Pyra Labs used "blog" as both a noun and verb ("to blog",
meaning "to edit one's weblog or to post to one's weblog") and devised the term
"blogger" in connection with Pyra Labs' Blogger product, leading to the popularization of
the terms
Chapter Three
What isWordPress and Why WordPress?
Although there are several blogging platforms one can use to build a blog but I will
recommend WordPress. WordPress blogs are just wonderful, because of their various
great themes and plugins to extend it functionalities.
According to WordPress.org, “WordPressis web software you can use to create a
beautiful website or blog.”
WordPress is just one of the many blogging platforms you can use to create a Blog, but
WordPress stands out from all of them.WordPress started in May 7, 2003 by Matt
Mullenweg, with a single bit of codeto enhance the typography of everyday writing.
Why WordPress?
WordPress is the best. Although there have been conspiracies between WordPress
andJoomla, another blogging platform which is more of Content Management System
(CMS).ButWordPress can also be used or function as a CMS site.
According to Wikipedia, WordPress is a free and open source blogging tool and
publishing platform powered by PHP and MySQL. It is often customized into a
content management system (CMS). It has many features including a plug-in
Architecture (which is Plugin) and a template system (which is Theme).
WordPress is used by over 14.7% of Alexa Internet's "top 1 million" websites and as of
August 2011, WordPress powers 22% of all new websites. WordPress is currently the
most popular CMS in use on the Internet.
As of February 2011, version 3.0 had been downloaded over 32.5 million times and
presently at 2016 we are on version 4.5.2 with more blogers coming on the platform.
By now, I believe with all the above, I do not need further prove to tell you that
WordPress is the king of CMS and Blogs.
Generally speaking, WordPress blogs can be use to create just any site ranging from
ecommerce websites to business websites, portfolio websites, and music websites, to
personal blogs. So either you are trying to build a static websites or wanted to build a
dynamic site, a WordPress blog is the right answer for you. Read on to discover how to
do this. Next, let us look into the requirements you need before you can create a
WordPress blog.
Chapter Four
What Do I Need to Get Started?
To get started with WordPress, there are some requirements you need to fulfill in other to
make it work. Although WordPress is well known for its ease of installation and in most
circumstances, installing WordPress is a very simple process and takes less than five
minutes to complete. However, there are few basic things you need to get in place before
installing one.
Things You Need to Know or Have Before Installing WordPress
A domain name
A web host
Internet connection and a PC
Access to your web server. (I will talk about this later)
Make sure your host have PHP version 5.2.4 (or greater) and MySQL
version 5.0.15 (or greater) and optionally, Apache mod_rewrite module (for
clean URIs known as Permalinks) – Do not worry about this, almost all
webhost nowadays has this features
A text editor (optional)
An FTP Client (the free FileZilla is okay) (optional)
Your web browser of choice (mine is Mozilla Firefox)
Checking to ensure that you and your web host have the minimum requirements to
run WordPress.
If you got all the above, you can then go ahead to install your own WordPress blog. The
ones marked as “optional” are not compulsory. This means we can do without them and
still go ahead to get our own WordPress blog installed successfully. This will lead us to
the next chapter.
Chapter Five
Getting a Webhost and Domain Name in Nigeria
If you get it wrong from the domain name and web host, you have gotten everything
wrong for good. That is the reason I have to explain in details, how to get a cheap domain
name and web host in Nigeria, how to choose your desired domain name and what to
look out for before choosing your web host. Please read this chapter with learning ears
because it is very important.
Most Nigerian bloggers and webmasters have been making the same mistake all over and
over again. Although there are several articles on the Internet with the same topic here,
but most do not really discourse what I want to disclose to you.
The main reason I am writing this piece is to help you get all over this problem, hence,
get you ahead of your competitors, if you are in the blogging world for business.
First, what is a domain name and what is a web host?
To be short, a domain name is an internet address or website address (e.g.
www.ososo.com.ng) and a web host is the container that houses your website. If you do
not understand this, you will later on in this guide. Just keep reading on.
How to Choose a Domain Name
Choosing a wrong domain name and web host can be dangerous to your business,
if care is not taken. So be careful in choosing the right domain name and web host for
your business, blog or website.
One of the most important parts of your online presence is your domain name. Without a
domain name, your customers or your blog visitors cannot find you or your products and
services online.
Today, I will not be talking on what a domain name is (Google it if you need more info
on what a domain name is) rather, I will be writing about the importance of a keyword-
rich domain name, which leads us to today’s topic
What to consider before buying domain name: keyword-rich domain name
I decided to write this article because I have noticed that majority of bloggers from
Nigeria (especially the newbies) are just buying or getting domain names without looking
out for keywords. Before getting a domain name, you MUST consider the keyword to
enable you to get on page one of search engines.
All what I’m saying is this, if you’re planning to set up a website or blog about fish
farming, you must include the keyword(s) or key phrase – which are fish farming,
farming or fish. Then we can try to use fishfarming.com. But obviously, fishfarming.com
won’t be available but you can add a word or two, something like learnfishfarming.com,
fisheryinnigeria.com, fishfarminghub.com, fishfarming.com, fishfarming.blogspot.com or
fishfarming.com.ng. Don’t just use jornie.com or jornie.blogspot.com. Now go to hosting
sites like www.whogohost.com and check if fishfarming.com is available. If not check
others.
Why Must You Use a Keyword-rich Domain?
A keyword-rich domain name is necessary if you really want to rank high in search
engines. When search engines crawl your site for contents, they gather information base
on your keywords. If there is a search query on your keyword(s), search engines brings
out results based on keywords (and other things like number of backlinks, age, unique
contents, etc.).
In other words, here’s a simple illustration;
If you go to www.google.com and search for “fish farming in Nigeria” (without the
quote). Google will bring out the results based on these factors;
Meta Tag (keywords)
- Meta Description (keywords)
- Contents (keywords) and
- Domain (keywords).
If you check out these factors, it’s all based on what – KEYWORDS!
So back to our topic, if your domain has the keywords (fish farming) like
www.FishFarmingNigeria.com (and all other things set properly) and I Google search
Fish Farming in Nigeria, you have the tendency of been among top 5 on page one of
Google because the 3 keywords I Google search are contained in the domain name.
Before buying a domain name, make sure your keyword is included.
How to Choose a Web Host for My Business Website or Blog
Choosing a web host is also important for the future of your blog or website. To know
which web host to use, make sure the host fulfill these:
Have instant Script Installation such as Fantastico De Luxe, Softacious,
classifieds, Forums and others.
Have a PHP version of 5 and above.
Be able to provide you with simple assistance in case you need one
24/7 customer support
Must be 99.9% uptime and
Must be reliable
That is not all but for now, endeavor to look for those things in a good web
Hosting providers.
Then Which Web Host Provider Should I Choose
There are so many several web hosting providers you can choose from but I can only
recommend just one because I have been using them for several years now and they are
very reliable. I recommend whogohost. They are reliable, and very supportive. Register
with them using this link here so that I can give you all the support you need to start your
blog or call me for immediate assistance. You will see the link for registration in the
subsequent chapters.
Most importantly, if you are using a Blogspot blog before and want to change your
.blogspot.com URL to a .com, feel free to call us we will respond in no time to fix it.
Chapter Six
Starting a WordPress Blog from Scratch
This part is another important part of this ebook. This is where we are going. Now let us
start the job. Right from this point, I will be talking majorly on how to start, create and
designing your very first WordPress blog.
In the earlier write-up, I have talked extensively on what WordPress is, what a blog is and
how to buy a keyword-rich domain name and web hosting. Now, I will explain all these
at this junction.
There are 2 types of WordPress blog, we have wordpress.com and wordpress.org.
Both WordPress are free but with little differences.
WordPress.com is a free blog provided by WordPress. This type of WordPress can only
be installed on their server, and hence provides a domain for you. But this time around, it
is a sub-domain, just like Blogger blogs. If you want to create a blog on wordpress.com,
you did not need a domain name and a web host. However, there are a lot of limitations
to wordpress.com and I did not advise you go for it.
By the way, you did not have your own domain name. Your blog will have to sit on a
sub-domain such as www.dennis.wordpress.com instead of www.dennis.com, although
you can change to www.dennis.com later but with a price which does not worth it.
Another limitation of a wordpress.com blog is the inability of the ownerto place adverts
on it. This means if you are thinking of using Google Adsense on your blog, do not go for
wordpress.com because it is not allowed.
Wordpress.org on the other hand has no limitation. This is the WordPress I have been
talking about. With this, you can get your own domain and web host and have total
control over your blog.
Wordpress.com features.
Wordpress.org houses so many features, such as the WordPress Script, Plugins, Themes,
Forum, Support and Documentation. You can download everything on
www.wordpress.org free of charge. But do not worry; we will not be downloading
anything because we will be installing them automatically.
The Forum is an online community board for WordPress users to brainstorm
together, share tips, help out newbies and give out announcements about the script.
The Support is for premium members who paid to get one or two services done for them.
The Documentation is an online manual for intending and existing WordPress users. You
can find everything you need to know about WordPress in this documentation.
Chapter Seven
How to Install a WordPress Blog with Fantastico
I will have to go straight to the point at this junction. Below, you will be seeing detailed
tutorial on how to install a WordPress blog using Fantastico De Luxe in your web host or
server, with enough explanatory images to make you understand better.
So let us get started…
If you purchased a Domain and Web Host, you will be given a Username and Password
to the cPanel (Control Panel) of your server. You need to be able to get into this cPanel.
To access your cPanel, point your browser to www.YOURSITENAME.com/cpanel. For
example, if your site name is www.dennis.com, you can access your cPanel by going to
www.dennis.com/cpaneland login with your login details which was given to you by your
hosting provider.
See the image below:
Enter the Username and Password you were given by your web host registrar when
you bought the domain and hosting, and you will land into your cPanel. The image
below shows the inside of a cPanel as at the time of writing this ebook.
loghosting.com
Then, scroll down, under Software, click Fantastico De Luxe. In some host, you might
not find Fantastico De Luxe but you will find Softacious which is still the same thing.
You should follow the same step I explained here with Softacious because they are the
same. So, click Fantastico De Luxeto start installing your
first WordPress blog.
Clicking on Fantastico will land you to it page. On the Fantastico page, you can install
WordPress with just a click of your mouse.
By the left, under Blog category, click Word Press. See the below image for better
understanding.
After clickingWordPress, the WordPress Installation page will come up, click
New Installation.
Now on the Install WordPresspage, we are going to fill all the necessary detailsof your
new blog. This is a 3 step procedure. I will be writing on every field so you can
understand, although everything here can be edited later. See the image below:
Now, let us look at them one after the other…
1. In this field, you need to choose the domain you have just registered. I mean
the domain you want to install WordPress on.
2. This part is not necessary except you want to install it on a Directory. For
example, if you want to install WordPress on
www.YOURDOMAINNAME.com/project, you did not need to enter anything in
this field. But if you want to install WordPress on the Directory called “Blog”, you
should enter “blog” into this field. So for the purpose of this guide, I will be
installing WordPress on a Directory called “project” because I already have a
functional WordPress on www.ososo.com.ng. Hope you understand this part. If
you want to install yours, you need to leave this box empty.
3. Administrator name is the Username that is required of you to enter your
WordPress Admin Dashboard. So make sure you write it somewhere safe.
4. Administrator password is the Password you need to enter your WordPress
Admin Dashboard. So make sure you write it somewhere safe.
5. This is the name that will be displayed on your blog. Just enter your name here
or a nickname in this field.
6. You should enter your email address here. This can be any of your email
address. If you have a customized email address ([email protected])
like mine, it is better to use it. If you do not have, use your gmail or yahoo mail.
7. Site name is the name you want to give your blog. You should use your
domain name as your Site Name. E.g. my domain name is www.ososo.com.ng,
and my site name is Ososo Times.
8. Description is your Blog Tagline. Tagline is the short sentence or phrase that
will be shown below your Site Name. Tagline, in other words, should be your
main blog keywords. Using my Site Name as an example, my Tagline will be
“News, Tourism, Jobs, and Sport”.
9. Click Install WordPress and within 5 seconds, your WordPress will almost be
ready.
That is the first step. On the second step, you need to confirm that you really
want to install WordPress. So, getting to the next page, click Finish Installation.
Did you notice the underlined link? That is the domain we have just installed
WordPress on. Remember I told you we will be installing on a Directory for the
purpose of this guide. Yours should not include /project or any directory name.
Yours should be something like http://ososo.com.ng.
After clicking Finish Installation, the success page should come up like this:
As you can see from the image above, we have just installed WordPress. From
this page, you can find your details like your Admin Username, Password and
Admin Link. Our Admin Username is admin; Password is admin, and Admin
Link is www.ososo.com.ng/entertainment/wp-admin. Note that your Admin Link
should be www.YOURDOMAIN.com.ng/wp-admin.
You can choose to send the details of your installation to your email for reference
purposes. If you wish to do that, just enter your email address into the box
provided and click Send E-mail.
After clicking on Send E-mail, the next page should show a successful message
like this:
That is all about Installing WordPress. We have just installed a WordPress Blog
successfully using Fantastico De Luxe. If you cannot find Fantastico De Luxe in
your own cPanel, you should see Softacious. Just follow the same path as the
Fantastico. Now, let us go ahead and open our newly installed WordPress by
pointing our browser to www.ososo.com.ng/project.
Chapter Eight
Setting Up Your First WordPress Blog
Congratulations friend, we have just installed a new WordPress blog. We can
now access our newly created blog by going to the link we installed the
WordPress on. For this purpose, I have just installed WordPress on
www.ososo.com.ng/project. For your own link, it should be
www.YOURDOMAIN.com. Now, let us visit our new WordPress blog by going to
www.ososo.com.ng/project.
That is the new WordPress blog we have just installed. We are now through with
the cPanel for now. From now on, we will be working from our WordPress Admin
Dashboard.
In this Chapter, I will be taking you through all the necessary settings you need to
do in a newly installed WordPress blog.
For a start, we need to update our WordPress software version, delete the
default Post, Comment, Page and edit the default Category. As you can see on
the blog, there is a post titled “Hello World!” with a comment, a Sample Page and
a default category “Uncategorized”.
So to do these, we need to enter our WordPress Admin area. Go to
www.YOURDOMAIN.com.ng/wp-admin, and enter your Username and
Password.
Here, our Username is admin and Password is admin. So enter both in the
boxes respectively and click Log In. Next page should be your Admin
Dashboard.
Updating Your WordPress Blog Version
In the image above, I have circled what is needed to be done. Number 1, you
should update the version of WordPress you just installed. Click Please update
now and the update page will pop up.
On the page, you will be told that there is an updated version available for your
installed version. Click Update Automatically and your version of installed
WordPress will be updated to the latest version, which is WordPress v4.5.2 as at
the time of writing this report.
If you see the above, this means your WordPress has been successfully
updated. Let’s get to the next task…
Deleting the Default Post, Comment and Sample Page
We need to delete the default post, comment and sample page. Then rename
the Uncategorized to any of your desired Category.
To delete the default post, go under Post, and click All Posts. Point your mouse
on the title of the post and 4 menus will show up, click on Trash. Doing this, not
only will the default post be deleted, but also the comment. See image below to
get this clearly.
The procedure to delete the default Sample Page is the same with the Post.
Follow the same path to delete the Sample Page. Go down, under Pages, click
All Pages and then delete it.
Editing and Adding Categories
In WordPress, every post has to be published inside a Category. Category in this
aspect should be a breakdown of your niche keywords, or key-topics that you will
be writing about on your blog. For example, if your blog is about FARMING, you
might want to categorize them into part, in terms of Category. So using our
example of FARMING as our niche, our Categories should be; Fish Farming,
Snail Rearing, Cultivation, Poultry, and Harvesting. The list can go on, depending
on how broad you want to write on that particular topic. You still do not get it
clear? You can visit some other blogs to see what their Category looks like. So,
to edit, delete or create new Categories for our new blog, click Categories
(underPosts), and the Category page will come up.
On getting to the Category page, you will find the default Category titled
Uncategorized. You should edit this to suit your blog niche. Replace it with any
of your desired Category (or keyword). See image below with better explanation.
Firstly, click on Categories under the Posts and you will get to the Add New
Category page.
Secondly, point your mouse cursor over Uncategorized, and then click Edit or
Quick Edit, and change the Category name to your desire name, enter the same
into theSlug box (all with small letters/lower case), and click Save.
Thirdly, to create New Categories, enter the Category name into the Name box,
enter the same name into the Slug box (number 4), then click Add New
Category.
NOTE: The Slug value should be written in lower case.
Repeat this step to add all the Categories you wish to add. It is that simple! Isn’t
it?
To create a Sub-Category you can use the Parent functionality to do that.
Working on the Settings Menu
Now, let us jump to the Settings menu. It is the last on the left row.
General:
Here you did not need much to edit. Except if you want to change your Site Title
and Tagline. But if not, skip to the next one.
Writing:
Under Writing, we need to do some basic settings. You might not understand
this, but it is very important as per Search Engine Optimization (SEO). Firstly, in
the Default Post Category, you can choose any of your newly created
Categories. This can be a popular Category that will be getting much attention or
posts.
Scrolling down on this same page, we are going to insert some URLs into the
Update Services. These URLs are a list of Pinging Services to ping our blog
whenever there is any update on it. This is a trick I use and it is helping my site
traffic a lot. I decided to talk about this because not everyone takes advantage of
this pinging functionality.
So what we are going to do is copy all the URLs below and paste them into the
Update Services box. Before pasting the URLs, make sure you delete the one in
the box.
These are the URLs:

This is important in terms of SEO. Permalink is the link of your Post. It should
contain your Post Title for better SEO. To change your Permalink, do this: Click

Month and name or
Custom Structure.
The Custom Structure is important if you did not want to use dates in
your Permalinks. Just enter /%postname%/ into the Custom Structure box.
Although, you can use the Permalink on a Category Base as I have used on my
personal blog, but I think the Custom Structure is okay for now.
This is all about the chapter. We have set-up all necessary things a new
WordPress blog needs to get started. In our next chapter, we will be dealing with
WordPress themes, where to get them and how to install them with ease.
Chapter Nine
How to Install WordPress Themes and Plugins
One of the most important reasons WordPress is so popular is its diverse,
beautiful and cheap themes or templates. With simple and interesting WordPress
themes, you can set up or build a wonderful WordPress blog. First, let us find out
where and how to get free and paid WordPress themes. Yes there are free and
paid themes and both have their advantages.
Free WordPress Themes
Free WordPress themes can be found all over the Internet but finding a good one
is the problem. However, there are some disadvantages in using a free theme.
With most free themes, you cannot edit their footer, or customized them to your
taste.
You can find large collections of these themes on the database of wordpress.org,
but there are also some sites that offer wonderful free themes to be used on your
blog for free.
See the following websites for free WordPress themes:
www.wordpress.org/extend/themes
www.freewpthemes.net
www.freewpthemes.co
www.wordpressthemeshock.com/free-wordpress-themes
Those are the few ones I can remember for now. You can do a Google search for
a list of sites that offer free WordPress themes. Please note that the above URLs
are just for recommendation.
Paid or Premium WordPress Themes
There are several websites that offer paid wordpresss themes. The fact is,
premium themes or paid themes remain the best. With a premium theme, you will
be able to design a WordPress blog like the pros. With little effort, you can get
yourself a professional looking blog. There is a website in Nigeria that offers any
product for a price of N1, 000. You can get premium themes from the website.
The website link is www.1kproducts.com.
However, if you do not want to use the website above, you can Google search for
Premium WordPress Themes and you will get a list of sites that offers paid
themes. Price ranges from $20 to $300. So feel free to make your choice. But I
believe the bonus that comes with this ebook is enough for you to get started.
How to Upload and Install a WordPress Theme
After you must have downloaded your desired WordPress theme, it is now time
to install this theme on your blog.
Normally, all WordPress themes should be in .ZIP format. So before you can
upload and install your theme, it must be in .zip format, except you want to
upload the theme via your cPanel, then you don’t need a .zip file.
However, for the purpose of this guide, I will be taking you through uploading and
installing a WordPress theme via your WordPress Admin Dashboard with ease.
Now let’s get started…
Log into your WP admin area by pointing your browser to
www.YOURDOMAIN.com/wp-admin and enter your Username and Password,
then under Appearance, click Themes. On the Themes page, you can find two
default themes there – Twenty Fifteen and Twenty Fourteen WordPress Themes.
You can either delete these themes or leave them; you might not need them. Go
ahead and click Install Theme.
After clicking on the Install Themes (number 2 above), you will land to the
Install Theme page where you can search the WordPress database for available free
themes or upload a downloaded theme.
Now, for the purpose of this guide also, we are going to upload a downloaded theme
instead of searching. Now, we are going to click Upload and the page will come up. On
the Upload page, click Browse … to find the downloaded theme on your PC, choose the
theme you want to install, and then click Install Now.
After clicking the Install Now button, a successful page will come up. That is if you have
install it correctly and that if the theme you uploaded is okay (without error).
Now I am going to install a WordPress theme called RedBlackGrey Theme. It is a free
theme which I have just downloaded for the purpose of this tutorial.
You should note some details in this process. I have chosen to install a theme with .zip
format as you can see in the image above. Although I have many series of WordPress
themes as you can see above, but I choose to pick RedBlackGrey heme because of it
simplicity and ease of installation for better understanding.
After clicking Open, then click Install Now. Within a minute, you should see a success
page like this:
As you can see above, our theme is in .zip format (circled in red). The Preview link is to
see how your blog will look like before activating the theme. If you do not like it, you can
delete it and install another one. The Activate link is used to activate the newly installed
theme. So to activate our newly uploaded theme now,
I will just click on Activate.
If that is successful, you will see something like this:
From the above image, you can see that we have just installed and activated a new theme
(see the underlined words in red). You can also see the one in circle – Theme Options.
That is where we are going to be editing and customizing our theme.
Now that we have successfully installed and activated a new theme, let us take a look at
our new blog. Go to www.YOURDOMAIN.com and see how it looks. For the purpose of
this guide, I have installed WordPress on www.ososo.com.ng/project, so let us take a
look at the blog on www.ososo.com.ng/project. See how it looks:
