Annual Report_DIGITAL_2018-2019

2 | Page A Message from the Student Life Director at Lone Star College –Tomball The Office of Student Life is the heartbeat of the college community and as such, operates as the hub of activity for all student organizations, sports teams, recreational sports and campus activities. The LSC-Tomball Office of Student Life supports over 25 student organizations, 4 sports teams, many campus and recreational activities in addition to the programs and events hosted by the department. The Office of Student Life is comprised of two professional staff members, three part-time staff members, two work-study students and numerous student volunteers. This team hosted 7,174 students throughout the academic year. However, the mission of the Office of Student Life transcends numbers. The development of our students and their connection to the LSC-Tomball campus is at the heart of our mission, and it is the quality of our students’ experience where we aspire to exceed expectations. The 2018-2019 academic year was full of opportunities. This was the first year for the new Registered Student Organization (RSO) funding process and the budget allocation caps. Once again, our RSOs rose to the occasion and were able to adapt and have a successful year. The Student Government Association (SGA) has taken off and is running successfully under Professor Cory Colby. SGA hosted a fundraiser to raise funds for Rosehill Elementary school. The fundraiser/book drive raised over $7,000. This was an amazing success! The Student Activities Board was re-activated this academic year as well. This group of dedicated students hosted numerous events for their fellow students throughout the year. Our RSOs contributed over 90 hours of service throughout the Tomball and Magnolia communities. Having both organizations active and working hard for the fellow students adds a tremendous amount to the culture at LSC-Tomball. For the first time in five years, I was able to take nine student leaders to Walt Disney World in Florida to attend the Youth Education Series – College Edition. Students were nominated by their RSO advisors. The trip was an amazing opportunity for the students and the college. The sessions included Leadership Strategies, Design Thinking and Creating a Culture of Excellence. The students

3 | Page that went on the trip then used what they learned during the spring iLead Retreat for the RSOs. The student leaders lead their fellow officers through a design thinking process of how to get more students involved in student organizations. At the end of the process they came up with a plan we will implement fall 2019. Student Life continues to support our early college high school partners. Royal ISD Early College High School and Tomball Star Academy attended several Student Life programs throughout the year. During the fall semester, we hosted a mini leadership conference for Tomball Star Academy. Leaders from across campus presented on many different aspects of leadership during their sessions. It was a great year at LSC-Tomball. On behalf of the Office of Student Life team, I am delighted to present our annual report for the 2018-2019 academic year. It highlights the many ways in which we, through our partnerships with students, faculty and staff, continue the tradition of creating opportunities that make attending Lone Star College-Tomball an experience not found at any other community college. Shannon Marino Director, Office of Student Life

6 | Page Leadership at Lone Star College-Tomball Students have numerous opportunities to grow their leadership skills throughout the year. Participation in a student organization is one of the best and most rewarding opportunities to grow as a leader. Communication, time management, working as a team, dealing with other students, faculty and staff who are from different cultural backgrounds, personalities and mindsets allow students to further develop the soft skills that employers are now looking for in their employees. ILead is a leadership program hosted by the Office of Student Life each semester. Past iLead programs have include guest speakers, student lead initiatives such as design thinking projects, and hands on activities. iLead offers students an opportunity to get their hands dirty in leadership activities by providing opportunities for students to lead from where they are and to grow in that process. The Disney Youth Education Series – College Edition is an opportunity for 10 student leaders to travel with the Student Life director to Walt Disney World in Florida and immerse themselves in Disney’s leadership training and culture. Students are nominated by their RSO advisor. Students chosen to go on the trip are then required to give back and share what they learned with their fellow RSO leaders. Membership in the Student Activities Board and the Student Government Association are also opportunities for students to get involved and add to their leadership tool kit. Both are servant leader organizations and they focus on their fellow students and their experience at LSC-Tomball. In addition to serving as an SGA officer, RSO members can serve as a Club Council member and participate in the SGA General Assembly. Every LSC-Tomball student is a member of the Student Government Association.
