GOING THE DISTANCE

In the last few years a remarkable series of kayaking journeys in
kayaks have gone forth. Three in particular have traversed major
stretches of open coastline in Asia, Northern Europe and America.

In 2000, Jon Turk, Christine Seashore and Misha Petrov spanned
2000 miles in just over 3 months from Petrapovlosk Kamchatka to
Gambell Alaska.

In 2005 Barbro Lindmann, paddling alone (pictured on this page
and our cover) traversed the full Norwegian coast line from Russia
to Sweden, over 1750 miles, in 78 days.

Renata Chlumska, begining in 2005 and continuing on as of this
writing, has undertaken the epic journey of circumnavigating the
lower 48 American States. Her journey has been paddling, and also,
on storm days and desert crossings, towing her boat behind with
roller blades or bike.

Toni Prijon Senior gladly assists with his vast expertise in shaping boats - that is
when we can get him off the water. He and his wife Lotti, also an ex-kayak-racer,
spend much of their summers sea kayaking in the Adriatic and Mediterranean from
his base in Slovenia, his native and readopted land.

Toni is a master in the modeling room and his enthusiasm for all things in life, be
it paddling, camaraderie, local cultures or travel are all reflected in the long legacy
of his boats and all of us who have been blessed to have learned from him.

In a few short years, the KODIAK has proven to be the ultimate expedition
kayak. Never resting we have updated the KODIAK into an even better boat.

RENATA CHLUMSKA'S
AROUND AMERICA EXPEDITION

In terms of adventures, Renata's is very audacious.
Beginning in Seattle in early July 2005, Renata
embarked on a modern Odyssey. Traversing the swell
and surf of the West Coast, at times in boat, and
other times with boat in tow, she had reached San
Diego by September. She then rode across the des-
ert, to the headwaters of the Rio Grand and proceed-
ed on. Renata, by her own locomotion, has already
rounded Key West and is proceeding North up the
East Coast. Having covered over 6500 miles, her track

Kayaking connects us to our gear and more - we transform ourselves with it. Our legs take on
the shape of dolphins. Other gear provides propulsion, control, safety and sometimes a complete

Remember the checklist: Appropriate boat, paddle, skirt, life jacket, clothes... then the list
normally splits between whitewater and touring -- helmet versus bilge pump and paddle float.
Not on this day however. We were doing a traverse up the coast at Big Sur.

I had a video camera and helmet in my cockpit between my legs and I had planned to pull
them out at sea. As it turned out, when I went to pull the video, we were in pretty big swell
and I realized (as I was away from the group) that I didn't want to pop my skirt and then need
two hands to reseal it. It would be too risky. Like the cartoon light bulb, this was the experience
from which our new Big Sur, Monterrey and Zipster spray decks emerged.

Access to your cockpit is worth having at sea, as is having the best whitewater level spray deck
seals. Day hatches and deck bags bring convenience, but there are certain things that just don't
fit that we may also need or at least want (Helmets and waterproof video enclosures are a few
among them.) A full neo-zippered skirt would permit one handed opening and closure - allowing
a simultaneous one handed deck brace. Even in the ocean swell this seemed possible.
Video footage looking in on Wreck Beach would have been fun to see, even more so the dramatic rise and fall of my partners as they trav-
eled ahead of me. It would have also been well worth having my helmet when I was coming in. (I simply forgot, to be honest, as the swell
settled before the surf zone.) It turned out that I did keep my head dry for the landing that followed. The longer surf session after donning
my helmet was another story. This was one very fun day paddling in every event and I remember how very relieved I was when this wave
finally passed under.
Our gear is built from the lessons we find while under way. As Toni notes on the following page: Whitewater is not truly separate from
touring. The variations are spectral. Kayaking, at essence, is one sport - a most wonderful one. Enthusiasm glows in its experience.
