2nd Annual

Horse Bowl
The Tennessee Walking Horse Youth Association hosted its
Ashley Thrasher, Senior High Point Individual second annual Horse Bowl competition. The competition is open
Leilani Landon, Junior High Point Individual to youth competitors from across the nation. Horse Bowl is an ex-
citing and fun approach to equine knowledge and provides partici-
pants the opportunity to demonstrate their knowledge of equine re-
lated subject matter as well as information specific to the Tennessee
Walking Horse. These youth competitors answered questions like,
“How many bones make up the skeleton of a horse?” and “Name
the oldest horse to win the World Grand Championship.”

[TWHYA Summer Splash]

2nd Annual TWHYA
Summer Splash

The Tennessee Walking Horse Youth Association
(TWHYA) 2nd Annual Summer Splash Youth and
Halter Show was held at the Belfast Lions Club horse
show grounds in Belfast, Tennessee on August 8th,
2020. The Summer Splash is a show that the TWHYA
youth work hard to put on, from raising the sponsor-
ship money to picking out awards. It has been a great
learning experience for our youth, seeing first-hand
all the hard work and responsibilities of putting on a
horse show.

Rollie Beard of Lewisburg, Tennessee served as
judge for the 35 youth and halter classes. The show
started out at 4pm with versatility classes and re-
sumed at 6 pm with all other classes. Numbers were
up from last year with a few changes in the schedule
and the addition of Riders’ Cup classes.

Congratulations to all the winners and to the
TWHYA youth on a great show. Keep up the good
work.

competitions. I exposed him to multiple
disciplines, cattle sorting, trail obstacle
competitions, gaited dressage, mounted
police training, and sanctioned shows. He
excelled at everything we tried. I love the
versatility of this breed!
Before I bought Pharaoh, Sue Wright was
letting me ride her second horse, a lovely
Morgan mare named Savannah. In ear-
ly 2008, Sue introduced me to NATRC
(North American Trail Ride Conference)
and I competed in my first event on her
horse. I was hooked. I began training Pha-
raoh with NATRC in mind. In 2010 he won best-con-
ditioned Novice Horse in our region, and First Place
Heavy Weight Horse. We ribboned out of Novice and
moved up to Competitive Pleasure. We both contin-
ued doing well in our region and started competing in
other regions as well to gain national points. Our first
ride in Region 3 was the Air Force Academy in Col-
orado Springs, Colorado. There were over 60 riders
in that event and I was quite intimidated. This was
our largest competition to date and at a much higher
elevation. I would have been delighted to just place
in the top ten. I was shocked when we both won first

the Utah border. We have completed over 515 miles
to date.
In 2019, I set my sights on winning a National
Championship in NATRC. We competed in four
competitions in Colorado, two in New Mexico, two
in Arizona and one in California. The ride year had
many ups and downs and I was afraid we wouldn’t
achieve my goal. I met a lot of wonderful people and
many new friends along the way. When the results
were tallied at the end of the year, we had both won
our National Competitive Pleasure Championships,
Pharaoh in the Heavy Weight Competitive Horse Di-
vision and me in Heavy Weight Competitive Horse-
manship. We also won the NATRC High Point Breed
Award for the Tennessee Walking Horse sponsored
by TWHBEA.
What a wonderful year with a great partner who did
everything I asked of him and more. It is with great
Pride, that I ride my very versatile Tennessee Walk-
ing Horse!

The Tennessee Walking Horse Breeders’ and Exhibitors’ Association, in association with FAST, is proud to
announce the re-establishment of the Youth Medallion Program. This class encourages youth riders to learn
and become proficient at the canter. It is a great way for our industry to regain the canter, and to reward our
youth for achieving excellence at this level.
Youth Medallion classes will be offered at various horse shows throughout the year. There will be two divi-
sions, performance and pleasure, each division with its own end-of-year award. Riders will receive points
determined by their placings in these two divisions, with the rider accumulating the most points in each
division receiving an educational scholarship valued at $500.00. Payout for Medallion classes are a medal-
lion and money as follows $100, $75, $50, $40, $30.
Guidelines for the Youth Medallion Classes:
• Open to all youth riders, age 17 and under (age as of January 1).
• Ownership of the horse is not required. Stallions are not allowed.
• Classes are for Flat-Shod and padded Performance Show Horses, performing all three gaits -

flat walk, running walk, and canter.
• The rider, not the horse, accumulates points awarded for placing and participating in the class.

Therefore, riders are not required to show the same horse throughout the season.

Any horse show interested in offering medallion classes should contact TWHBEA at (931) 359-0592.
Affiliation forms are available at twhbea.com under Youth Forms.
