TACK CLEANING

tips on

Tackcleaning your
Since leather is a natural fiber, subject to damage from moisture, bacteria and high heat, it can easily
break down if not protected from these elements. Here are a few tips for you to prolong the life of your
equipment.

VOICE • JUNE 2017 12

You need to remove as much of the salt from sweat as you can and TACK CLEANING
float out the dirt particles, with saddle soap and warm water. Work up
a lather on the leather using a brush with soap and warm water, and VOICE • JUNE 2017
use a sponge to flush it clean. Washing with warm water opens the
pores of the leather to float out dirt particles that have penetrated it.

When cleaning leather, many people think that leather and water
are a bad combination, but water is hard on leather only if the leather
is wet for an extended time. Using a glycerin liquid soap and working
up a lather and wiping it off, and not using water doesn’t remove all
the dirt.

If it has been awhile since a saddle or bridle was thoroughly cleaned,
take it apart to clean it. This gets the dirt out from under the buckles,
and you can tell if any of the leather is getting worn.

After cleaning, let the leather dry at room temperature. If the leather
seems dry and hard, use a very high grade of oil to replace what time
and washing has removed. You will be able to tell how much oil to use,
because dry leather will absorb it in. It is best to have the oil warm, it
will dissipate into the leather fibers more readily. After oiling let it sit
for a few hours, or until the next day, feel the leather again. If it still
feels brittle and dry, it needs more oil. If it feels pliable move on to the
next step.

After the leather is pliable again, you can go ahead and apply saddle
dressing or saddle butter to seal and protect it better. It is best if both
the wax and the leather are warm for optimal absorption. These
products contain beeswax and other hard waxes, and if the leather is
cold, the product will merely cake onto the outer surface rather than
penetrate. A blow dryer may be used to help break down the wax. If
you can get some penetration with the wax-based product, then when
the leather cools the wax hardens. That is how you get the sealing
effect that works so well as a moisture barrier. Use a piece of soft cloth
and buff any excess wax off.

How to Tackle Mold and Mildew in Your Leather

If you have noticed a mold problem such as powdery blue and/
or green coatings and spots, there are some simple steps to take to
remove the mold and prevent it returning.

Using cloths, which you don’t mind throwing away because they
will be contaminated with mold spores, take your leather outside and
remove all the visible mold and mildew. It is important to take outside
to clean as not to get mold spores in the air and contaminate other
tack. Use an old tooth brush to reach into crevices and stitched areas.

Mold can be killed by mixing one of these products 50-50 with
water: alcohol, ammonia, bleach, baking soda or white vinegar. When
finished cleaning and killing the mold let dry and oil and finish as
previously stated.
