TWHBEA NEWS 99 Paulette Ewing Retires After 31 Years June 16, 2023, marked the end of an era as Paulette Ewing retired after 31 years of service to TWHBEA. Paulette began her full-time career at TWHBEA on January 21, 1992, after working part-time for the VOICE magazine for a couple of years. Over the past three decades the staff and members of TWHBEA have come to rely on Paulette for a multitude of things. In addition to being the editor of the VOICE magazine, Paulette handles the design for all TWHBEA publications, oversees the facility and auditorium rentals, and has been the point person for youth programs. “The creative talents of Paulette can be seen in everything this association has done for over 30 years and her contributions will continue to be felt and appreciated for years to come,” says TWHBEA CEO Mark Farrar. Although officially retired, she will continue to be a consultant for the VOICE for the next few months to help ensure a smooth transition. A reception will be held later in the year to honor Paulette, but in the meantime, members can send messages of appreciation to [email protected]. Walking Horses Excel at Extreme Cowboy Race Tennessee Walking Horses represented the breed well at the recent Extreme Cowboy Race, held in Champions Arena in Shelbyville, Tennessee. TWH entries placed in the top 10 on nine occasions, including one championship and one reserve championship in some very tough competition. This national event attracted 140 entries from as far east as the Carolinas and as far west as California. TWHBEA welcomed participants with breakfast each morning and offered an incentive for the top TWH in each division. “We want to recognize Tennessee Walking Horses wherever they excel – in the showring and in competitions like this,” said TWHBEA CEO Mark Farrar. “The Extreme Cowboy Race is definitely one of the places our horses and members are excelling, and we couldn’t be more proud!” Congratulations to the incentive winners: Terri Glonek on One Tuff Cowgirl (#20903709 Skyjacker’s Mountain High x Eb’s Miss Busting Loose) – 8th Place in the Novice Division (out of 18 riders). TWHYA NEWS 100 Corporate Rule Changes Approved for Online Voting On the recommendation from the Election Committee, the TWHBEA Executive Committee approved a change to the Corporate Rules that will allow voting members in the United States to opt-in for electronic voting for the International Board of Directors election. The rule change also makes it mandatory for voting outside of the territorial United States to be done electronically. Increasing expenses and difficulty in delivery have made this change necessary. These changes have been approved in time to be implemented for this year’s election. Members have until August 1, 2023, to opt-in for electronic voting in this election, which can be done when they sign in to their iPEDs account. Updated Corporate Rule: 29.05 The Association shall make every effort to compile a database of email addresses for all members, including specific and directed efforts prior to August 1 of each year. Those efforts shall include descriptions of current rules and opportunities concerning electronic voting. 29.05a. Voting within the United States. Each year, the Election Committee shall send an email to all Association members who have current email addresses on file with the Association. Those members shall be notified that their votes in the upcoming election may be conducted electronically, if they indicate their preference to vote electronically. The election will proceed with paper ballots for all members except those who have expressed a preference to vote electronically. 29.05b. Voting by Members Outside the United States. Voting on the part of members residing outside the territorial United States, including members residing in territories, shall be conducted electronically, and paper balloting shall not be allowed. As with other members, every effort shall be made to collect and retain valid and current email addresse for international members, and to explain and facilitate the electronic voting process. 29.06 The electronic voting will be conducted by a non-conflicted independent third party, and this third party will be required to certify that the electronic voting has been conducted properly, accurately, anonymously, and with appropriate security. The third party will keep sufficient information to respond to challenges. Once the results are final, the third party will retain no information. If you are having trouble using the search function in iPEDs, you may need to remove “Smart Punctuation” to get your searches to work correctly. A Director may not be serving a USDA-initiated and finally adjudicated Horse Protection Act suspension of thirty (30) days or longer or have served any such HPA suspension in the last 365 days, nor be serving any HPA suspension of thirty days or longer from any USDA certified horse industry organization during the Director’s term or his/her term will be terminated; 5. Each director must take and at all times conform to the oath of office extant at the time of the director’s election and as amended at any time during the term of office; 6. Each potential Director must have had at least one horse duly registered with the Association for a period of one year, commencing as of August 1 of the preceding year to be elected, and must keep at least one horse continuously registered throughout the duration of the election period and the term. Additionally, no person shall be eligible to be a director for more than two (2) full consecutive terms, however, a director may serve more than two (2) nonconsecutive terms. TWHBEA Youth Medallion Class Standing The Tennessee Walking Horse Breeders’ and Exhibitors’ Association, is proud to encourage youth riders learning and becoming proficient at the canter. It is a great way for our industry to regain the canter, and to reward our youth for achieving excellence at this level. Youth Medallion classes will be offered at various horse shows throughout the year. There will be two divisions, performance and pleasure, each division with its own end-of-year award. Riders will receive points determined by their placings in these two divisions, with the rider accumulating the most points in each division receiving an educational scholarship valued at $500.00. Payout for Medallion classes are a medallion and money as follows $100, $75, $50, $40, $30. Guidelines for the Youth Medallion Classes: • Open to all youth riders, age 17 and under (age as of January 1). • Ownership of the horse is not required. Stallions are not allowed. • Classes are for Flat-Shod and padded Performance Show Horses, performing all three gaits - flat walk, running walk, and canter. • The rider, not the horse, accumulates points awarded for placing and participating in the class. Therefore, riders are not required to show the same horse throughout the season. Any horse show interested in offering medallion classes should contact TWHBEA at (931) 359-0592.
