48th Annual National
Trainers’ Show

The 48th Annual National Trainers Show returned
to the Calsonic in Shelbyville, Tennessee, March
17-19, 2016. This year the Walking Horse
Trainers’ Association added a Country Boy Show
on Saturday morning and hosted a total from both
evening and morning classes of 527 entries. The entries
were up from 309 in 2015.
WHTA selected the judges this year by allowing the
board to select one judge, the general membership to
select a second judge and the final judge being selected
by the attendees at the Horse of the Year Banquet. They
were Jamie Hankins from Kentucky, Dean Byard from
Tennessee and Allen Forman of Georgia. Out of the 58
classes tied, the judges selection was unanimous 29 times.
Six top entries made the gate call for the National
Trainers’ Show Grand Championship class. A Strong
Need For Cash and Michael Wright claimed the grand
championship honors for owners Jim and Jeannie Roberts.
Reserve was Joe Pa with Winky Groover in the irons.
Congratulations to all the winners and to the Walking
Horse Trainers’ Association on a great kick off to the
show season.
