FROM YOUR PRESIDENT

from the president

David W. Williams

What a great time of the year to own and raise Tennessee Walking Horses! Facebook
gives many of us easy access to all your new foal photos you have posted. We see the
many great social gatherings we call Horse Shows and the goings on there. We also
get wonderful landscapes and vistas you photograph atop your Tennessee Walking Horse while
you trail ride, beach ride and mountain ride.

I have seen many beautiful Tennessee Walking Horse foals already this year through the photos
of our many friends on Facebook. What I also see is a desire for others to know what their dam
and sire are and if they are registered. Registering your foal not only gets you a “certificate of
authenticity” for your foal but it immediately lets the world know through Ipeds that that foal is
out there whether you want to sell it or just brag about it. Registration of your foals should always
be a part of the springtime foaling process.

One Night Horse Shows are the “Life-Blood” of our breed. These social competitive gatherings
bring Walking Horse enthusiasts from all over our country. In this day of technology, it is easy
to sit at home and watch the horse show on the internet. What you are missing is that person
to person and horse to person interaction that light on a screen cannot provide. Get out of your
chair and go to the show. I promise on your way home you’ll always say; I’m Glad I Went!

This time of year, many of us “amateur” trail riders get to enjoy the woods with the folks
who never stop and trail riding all year long. These folks are “professional” horsemen and
horsewomen. I’ve never known of one that wouldn’t be more than helpful if you had a question
or needed some guidance with your trail mount. The only place to find these experts are “in the
woods”. Get out of your den and head to the woods. You’ll be glad you did.

Have a blessed, foaling showing and trail riding summer!
As always it has been my pleasure to serve as your president,

David W. Williams 4
President TWHBEA

EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR

TWHBEA – Lewisburg, TN

RORY R. WILLIAMS

Executive Director|General Editor

Happy Spring to you all! As you may have read recently on our website news page,
TWHBEA experienced a very strong first quarter, financially and measurably
in our raw numbers of business conducted. Following a strong year in which
increases in mares bred, registrations and transfers along with a smaller than industry-
average membership loss earned our association and THE BREED some accolades in the
equine world.

“For the first quarter of 2019 FY, all the measurable metrics were in a positive position
at term end. Folks, you all may not realize it but, it is the first time in four years that
all five of the standards by which we gauge success in the industry (or our portion of it
anyway) have been in a positive position at the end of a quarter. We at TWHBEA, as
in any business, like positive numbers and expect ebb and flow however, we are also
hopeful that the industry is burgeoning under a strong economy and improved conditions
for the horses and their owners.

Keep up the good work, continue sound training and showing, breed your mares
and register the offspring. Registrations are key to maintaining the value of our horse;
everyone must realize that. It is not enough that they look healthy, shake their heads and
walk well. Without a certificate of registration from THWBEA, what you have is a good-
looking gaited horse.” (03/04/19. www.twhbea.com/news)

Every year equine breed associations turn in their numbers of members, registrations,
and transfers for the previous calendar year. Since 2015, and with careful attention to the
standings of the Tennessee Walking Horse Breeders’ and Exhibitors’ Association, we see
improving trends in two of the three metrics in terms of raw numbers, and percentage
points comparatively speaking, amongst the other associations.

See the full article with information presented from the National Pedigreed Livestock
Council for reference later in the magazine. We’re sure you’ll appreciate the improvement
and position for which TWHBEA thanks its’ members and customers.

BILL WILLIAMS STORY

Horses Are A Part Of His Life

William B. Williams, Jr. and 24
Margaret Ann Wright met
when Margaret saw Will
riding a horse in town one day. Then
they took a ride together and the story
continues as they married and had a
son, William B. Williams, III. Bill as he
is called, was raised with horses as a
part of his life.

Bill spent his life riding and showing
everything from Saddlebreds to
roadster horses. He was raised in the
Memphis, Tennessee area and went to
Mississippi State college and graduated
with a degree in horticulture. After
graduating from college he join the
Air Force and even then horses were a
part of his life, he spent a great deal of
time at a stable teaching kids to ride.

He was then transferred to Germany
and found a stable close by and spent
all of his spare time riding under
instructor Paul Lorenz. He was asked
to stay in Germany and continue riding
once he was discharged from the Air
Force, but his parents were aging and
he knew he needed to be there for
them. He was transferred back to the
United States and was teaching ROTC
at Memphis State University and was
foxhunting in Germantown with the
Oak Grove Hunt Club where he met
his wife, Mary Treace. They married
when Bill was 30 and he went to work
for her father. Bill found that he was
quite a salesman and did very well
selling medical parts for the ear. He

the company had been sold to. They
decided to start their own company.
After lots of hard work the company
did very well and they sold it to Bristol
Myer Squib. Bill was asked by some
doctors, that had invented a drill for
surgery, to help them market and sell
it. After starting this second company,
his wife was in failing health and was
ready for Bill to not be traveling so
much. This was the second company
that Bill sold to a big corporation.

BILL WILLIAMS STORY

Bill lost his wife in 2000 and could
not seem to get out of a dark place.
Friends got him to get out and go to a
horse show knowing his love of horses.
This was where he was first introduced
to the Tennessee Walking Horse. Bill
said “anybody can ride these horses”.
In 2001 he bought Just So You’ll
Know his first walking horse. Since
then he has won 135 blue ribbons
and three world grand championships
and has lots of young horses doing
very well at Wright Stables. Bill lives
in Ripley, Tennessee on Great Oaks
Farm, a 200 acre farm handed down
from his great great grandfather and
raises mares and foals. He has bought
a 100 acre farm close to Wright
Stables for his retired show horses. Bill
has a dream to start a program called
Tennessee Walkers Walk for Wounded
Warriors.

Bill has traveled the world and
lived his life with horses as a big part
of it. He is still traveling and riding
horses and enjoying life to the fullest.
I enjoyed the interview with Bill so
much, he has so many stories of his
life adventures. I have only touched
the highlights, if you get the chance to
meet him you are in for a treat to hear
about his life’s adventures.

GIRL SCOUTS ON
TENNESSEE WALKING HORSES

Get in Step Horse Barn,
Marshfield, Missouri, hosted
Girl Scout Troop #71877
on April 2, 2019 to earn their
junior horseback riding badge. Four
registered Tennessee Walking Horses
were used to meet all the requirements.
The gentle nature of the Tennessee
Walking Horse makes them an ideal
breed to introduce children to horses
and riding. As an extra incentive,
TWHBEA offers a special patch for
scouts that use our breed to meet their
requirements.

These wonderful horses were just
what these Scouts needed as most
had never had the opportunity to
ride a horse. The girls had a great
time learning about horses and
horsemanship.

All eleven girls had a chance to ride
and we ended up having enough time
for everyone to take a second ride! We
finished the day with group pictures as
a memento to their day learning about
our breed.
