East Tennessee, Kentucky, Virginia and the Carolinas to the Tennessee Walking Horse. In 2022, he was recognized for all of his efforts by TWHBEA when he was presented the prestigious Performance Horse Ambassador award. “It has always been my dream to own a top-of-the-line training facility,” says Conner. “So we built one.” Conner and his wife, Mandy, began construction on I n the popular 1989 movie, Field of Dreams, a farmer builds a baseball field in his cornfield and hosts the ghosts of the 1919 Chicago White Sox. In 2021, Jimbo Conner realized his dream of putting on a horse show in his hometown of Sevierville, Tennessee, in his own Smoky Mountain Arena. Walking in the Smokies has just completed its fourth year as one of the premier Tennessee Walking Horse shows in the industry. The 2024 show benefitted the Sevierville Rotary Club and boasted of 191 entries. A commercial developer in Sevierville, Conner is known for building beautiful properties in the Smoky Mountains. Amateur World Grand Championship with Lexie Stinnett. He currently owns sixteen horses, some bred at the farm and others purchased elsewhere. When asked his favorite thing about the Tennessee Walking Horse, Conner mentions the smooth gait and wonderful disposition. “There is nothing like the smooth ride,” he says. Like so many other walking horse enthusiasts, introducing others to the breed is a passion. “I like to see this breed bring as much enjoyment to new people as it has to me and my family,” he says. Just like Kevin Costner’s character in Field of Dreams, Jimbo Conner seems to have heard the voice telling him, “If you build it, they will come.” His love of the Tennessee Walking Horse, his hometown of Sevierville and its people have come together in a beautiful facility in the heart of the Smoky Mountains, his own “field of dreams.” the barn and arena in 2020. Even before the indoor arena was finished, plans for the first horse show were underway. The first Walking in the Smokies show was held April 7-9, 2021, and featured not only Tennessee Walking Horses and Racking Horses, but live music, special exhibitions, and great food at ringside. The 50,000 square foot facility not only hosts Walking in the Smokies, but is home to Snappwood Farm, a state-of-the-art training facility. It is here that Chris Helton trains Conner’s horses as well as horses for outside customers. “We host several horse shows and other events throughout the year,” Conner explains. The indoor arena, with its stalls and ample parking, makes it possible to host events year-round, even in the cold months and inhospitable weather. Conner began in the horse business in 1995. The first Tennessee Walking Horse show he attended was the Celebration. He did not show horses himself until 2015, when he won a blue ribbon at the Carthage show on Undecided, a Park Performance horse. Three years later, Conner rode Jose’s Redrock to a Celebration World Championship in the Novice Gentlemen on Stallions division. His first World Grand Championship as an owner came the following year, when Smoky Mountain Strong won the 2-Year-Old The Connor family and friends celebrating a win at the 2022 National Celebration Jimbo at the 2018 National Celebration “There is nothing like the smooth ride.” April 2024 59

Then imagine that the new owner went out and used that car in an irresponsible way – accumulating parking tickets and traffic violations. You go to your mailbox one sunny morning a year or so later and are surprised with a court summons resulting from those unpaid tickets and violations for which you, as the owner of record on that car, are now responsible. Your insurance rates on the vehicles actually in your possession skyrocket, your name appears in the local police blotter and you’re faced with miles and miles of red tape that must be straightened out. Of course, they are designed to prevent this from happening, at least when it comes to vehicles. And, even if there weren’t laws, most informed and responsible people would make sure that a car that they sold was transferred out of their name. However, in the horse industry, there are numerous cases of horses remaining in a seller’s name for years to come after the sale. This practice of buyers not transferring horses into their names makes sellers vulnerable to various scenarios that mirror the example above. Therefore, it is in the best interest of all sellers to take care of the transfer themselves. This is the best way to protect their interests and prevent future entanglements involving Horse Protection Act violations, unpaid fees and anything else that may be impacted by inaccurate ownership records. Proactive sellers who take the initiative to transfer sold horses out of their names are taking a huge step toward protecting their interests. Surely it is worth a little bit of paperwork and a reasonable fee to protect one’s name and to keep from having to mount a defense against violations incurred without your actual involvement. Horses are large investments with significant risks; it only makes sense to do everything in your power to protect yourself by ensuring that your responsibilities are limited to horses that are actually in your possession. –Sarah Gee Transfering Your Horses Registration 68 The VOICE of the Tennessee Walking Horse

SHIPWRECKED Represents Breed at Ag Day on the Hill On March 19, 2024, Tennessee celebrated National Ag Day at the Tennessee State Capital in Nashville, and TWHBEA was there with the Official State Horse! National Ag Day celebrates the vital role of agriculture. Governor Bill Lee issued a proclamation honoring farmers and foresters as part of state and national Ag Day activities. Tennessee’s hardworking farmers, foresters, agriculture officials, legislators, 4-H members, FFA members, and citizens came together for “Ag Day on the Hill.” For the past several years TWHBEA has participated by bringing a Tennessee Walking Horse to participate in the celebration. This year’s ambassador was SHIPWRECKED, the Owner/Amateur Four & FiveYear-Old Country Pleasure World Grand Champion. TWHBEA President Amanda Wright and CEO Mark Farrar were joined by trainer Baily Momb at the event to greet visitors and answer questions. Southern Equine Expo Held in Murfreesboro TWHBEA again participated in the Southern Equine Expo, held at the Miller Coliseum in Murfreesboro, Tennessee in February. Our breed was well-represented with a couple of demonstrations and a significant booth presence. The show was well-attended and many participants stopped by the TWHBEA booth to ask questions, pick up information, and share stories of their Tennessee Walking Horses. Jessica Mast conducted two clinics during the weekend on “Exploring the Tennessee Walking Horse.” The 45-minute clinics served as an introduction to our breed. TWHBEA NEWS TWHBEA President Amanda Wright and trainer Bailey Momb were on hand to greet visitors and answer questions. Rep. Bulk Discount Offered for Owners to Get Sold Horses Removed from Account For many years TWHBEA has allowed members to file an “Acknowledgement of a Sold Horse” and pay $20 to have horses that they’ve sold removed from their name. Those horses are transferred to an “unknown owner” account until such time that someone provides the appropriate documentation and fees to have them transferred into their name. The acknowledgement releases the owner from any interest in the horse and agrees to hold TWHBEA harmless for future transfers to another party. While it is highly recommended that the seller promptly files a transfer when they sell a horse (see article on page 68), we realize that not every owner does that. Many times people sell horses and trust that the new owner will take care of the transfer. This is a risky assumption since the former owner still has some liability associated with a horse that’s no longer in their possession as long as that horse remains in their name. To help members “cleanup” their accounts and remove horses that they no longer own, the Executive Committee has approved discounted pricing until the end of the year. Individual acknowledgements can still be filed for $20 each. Those who wish to file up to five at one time will only pay $75 and those who are willing to pay $150 can file unlimited acknowledgements, so long as they are all filed at the same time. Owners must be a current member to file the acknowledgement(s). Members will be able to use iPEDs to use this process to remove horses from their name beginning in June, but the standard forms can be submitted using the discounted rate anytime from now until December 31, 2024. The “Acknowledgement of a Sold Horse’ form can be downloaded from our website at www.TWHBEA. com/about-twhbea/forms-literature. Initial Prefix/Suffix Applications Approved The TWHBEA Membership & Registry Committee, chaired by David Sisk, recently approved the initial Prefix/Suffix applications. Future applications will be considered on a first come, first served basis. The ability to permanently reserve a Prefix/Suffix was approved in December of 2023. Registered Prefixes/Suffixes can be used exclusively by owners as a way to distinguish horses bred by them from those of other breeders. The rules for registering a Prefix/Suffix can be found in the TWHBEA Corporate Rules in section 1.06. The rules can be found online at www.TWHBEA.com/governance/corporate-rules. These are the Prefixes/Suffixes that have been approved: • 5SF (Richard McFerrin) • AILS (Darrell Ailshie) • BF (Randall Baker) • CVF (Michael Floyd) • CWF (Martin Cox) • ED’S (Edward Lukacevic) • JF (Brian Hazelwood) • LHF (Andrew Sisk) • MCF (Joyce Moyer) • RAVENSWOOD (Stephen Smith) • RW (Denise Smith) • SBS (Carrie Benedict) • SCF (Leisha Holzknecht) • SCW (Richelle Pacovsky) • SF (Janet Howell) • SILVER CREEK (Kristine Hammons) • TARHEEL (Robert Rollins) • VK (Robyn Van Kooten) • W (Brian Wright) • WCF (Kasey Kesselring) • WWF (David Williams) TWHBEA NEWS Satellite Office Open During Celebration Spring Fun Show The TWHBEA Satellite Office will be open on the Celebration Grounds during Celebration Spring Fun Show, scheduled for May 23-25, 2024 at Cooper Steele Arena in Shelbyville, TN. TWHBEA NEWS During our December banquet, we announced that United States Senator Mitch McConnell (R-KY) was the 2023 recipient of the Reese L. Smith, Jr. Distinguished Service Award. Senator McConnell was unable to attend the banquet, but Steve Smith recently had the opportunity to make the presentation to McConnell in Washington, D.C. Smith received the award named for his father in 2008. Senator McConnell has been one of the industry’s most solid supporters and advocates over the past 35 years. During his extensive time in the United States Senate and his tenure as Leader, McConnell has always been willing to advocate for the industry and the enormous impact it has on lives and rural communities in his home state of Kentucky and throughout the Country. Bill Hagerty (left) & Steve Smith (right) Pick Your Partner Class Debuts for 2024 at National Trainers’ Show After the popularity of the “Pick Your Partner” class at last year’s United Fall Finale, the class will now be featured at five different shows this year as a fundraiser for the industry. The first classes of the year was held during WHTA National Trainers’ Show, raising over $9,000 for the Foundation for the Advancement & Support of the Tennessee Walking Show Horse (FAST). These classes are open to teams of youth, amateurs, and/or trainers. Any combination is acceptable. One team member will ride first way and their partner will ride second way. Teams solicit sponsors (much like a walk-a-thon) to support them in the class. All online donations go directly to FAST. A “Fan Favorite” award is given for the team that raises the most money by the end of the class. In addition to the Trainers’ Show, these other shows will be hosting “Pick Your Partner” classes this year: • May 23-25 – TWHNC Spring Fun Show (Celebration Arena, Shelbyville, TN) • July 18-28 – International Grand Championships (Miller Coliseum, Murfreesboro, TN) • October 3-5 – NC State Championships (Western NC Ag Center, Fletcher, NC) • November 14-16 – United Fall Finale (Battle Arena, Tunica, MS) These classes are directed by the TWHBEA Training Committee, chaired by Dee Cantrell. For more information, contact Cantrell at birddogs@ bellsouth.net or TWHBEA at [email protected]. You can also call the TWHBEA office at 931-359-1574. 76 The VOICE of the Tennessee Walking Horse

Each State or Region having 80 members is entitled to one director and can elect one additional director for every 80 members. States not having as many as 80 members are grouped together in Regions. The determination is based on the number of individuals who were members of each State or Region at some point during the prior calendar year. The intention of the bylaws is to maintain the size of the Board of Directors at no smaller than 50 and no larger than 90. Due to a growth in memberships, the total number of Directors will increase from 63 to 68 with Tennessee gaining three Directors and both Kentucky and Region 1 each gaining an additional Director. All Regions will remain the same for the coming year. More information on the election will be in the June issue of the VOICE. Qualified members have until August 1, 2024 to declare their candidacy for this year’s election. Jackie Singleton Kerry Huckaby Amie Boyd Marks 78 The VOICE of the Tennessee Walking Horse
