T he highest and most prestigious recognition given to a breeder of Tennessee Walking Horses, the Tennessee Walking Horse Breeders’ and Exhibitors’ Association Master Breeder Award recognizes those breeders whose body of work over an extended period of time has had a significant and long-lasting impact on the Tennessee Walking Horse breed. The recipients of this award are chosen by a committee consisting of the standing Executive Committee, past TWHBEA Presidents, past Master Breeders and two TWHBEA members-at-large. TENNESSEE WALKING HORSE 2022 HONOREES JIMMY JOE HACKETT (posthumous) The breeding decisions made by Jimmy Joe Hackett of Carthage, Tennessee have already impacted the industry greatly, and will continue to do so for future generations. In 1999 when he decided to breed his mare, Coins Lady Beam, to He’s Puttin’ on the Ritz, he put into motion a chain of events that has produced some of the most popular show horses of this generation. That combination produced The Titleist, which is the sire of the great show mare, WGC Zeta, and the extremely popular 2016 World Grand Champion, Honors. That makes him the grandsire of the 2021 & 2022 World Grand Champion, Justified Honors. A pharmacist by trade, Hackett owned and bred Tennessee Walking Horses for 50 years until his death in 2013. JOHN A. HENDRIXSON (posthumous) John A. Hendrixson from Manchester, TN was a knowledgeable horseman who bought and bred quality Tennessee Walking Horse foals, his most famous being Midnight Sun. He purchased the 1945-46 World Grand Champion from his breeder Sam Ramsey and eventually sold him to Wirt Harlin. Hendrixson bred his mares to some the best sires of the era. He was fond of yellow horses and particularly the “Chance” bloodlines, doing much to propagate and underpin the foundation of the modern-day palomino and champagnecolored horses via his most famous stallion, John A’s Chance. BOB ROLLINS If it has “Tarheel” attached to its name, you know it came from North Carolina and the breeding program of Bob Rollins. Bob has consistently produced some of the greatest Tennessee Walking Horses to have ever entered a show ring. Topping the list is the 2013, 2014, and 2015 World Grand Champion, I Am Jose,’ by Jose’ Jose’ and out of his legendary mare Pride’s Angelique. His program also produced other notables like the 2018 Four-YearOld World Grand Champion, Star of Ritz, out of Tarheel’s Star of Jose,’ a daughter of Angelique and a full sister to I Am Jose;’ Machete, out of his mare Tarheel’s Sparkle Plenty and Jose’s Centerfold, out of his mare Tarheel’s Supreme Colors. These are just a few of the great horses from the Tarheel breeding program. Taking great pride in his work, Bob can be found at the many horse shows and training barns watching the horses he has raised. 54 Master Breeders.indd 2 2/22/23 8:53 AM

58 World Grand Champion Portrait Presented to Commissioner of Agriculture A portrait of the reigning World Grand Champion Tennessee Walking Horse, Justified Honors, was recently presented to Tennessee Commissioner of Agriculture, Dr. Charlie Hatcher, in Nashville. The official World Grand Champion portrait, by photographer Shane Shiflet, is the first ever made in the “Big Oval” on the historic Celebration grounds. It was unveiled in December at the TWHBEA Awards Banquet and is displayed at Ellington Center, home of the Tennessee Department of Agriculture. On hand for the presentation of the portrait were (pictured from left to right) Mark Farrar, TWHBEA CEO, Dr. Jim and Lisa Baum, owners of Justified Honors, Commissioner Hatcher, John Allan Callaway, the trainer and rider of the champion, and Jeffrey Howard, Celebration Board Vice-Chair. The portrait is also displayed at the Tennessee Visitors’ Center in Portland, the Tennessee Welcome Center in Hartford, Agri-Center International in Memphis, the TWHBEA headquarters, and The Celebration main office. TWHBEA NEWS Satellite Office Open During Trainers’ Show TWHBEA Approves 3-Year Strategic Plan The TWHBEA Satellite Office on The Celebration grounds will be open from 5-8pm each day of the National Trainers’ Show, scheduled for March 15-18, 2023. Customers will be able to take care of registrations, transfers, leases and memberships at the Satellite Office. The TWHBEA Executive Committee met for two days in December to work on a strategic plan that will guide the association’s leadership, committees, and staff for the next three years. It communicates value to members, prospects, and stakeholders. They utilized internationally-acclaimed association expert Bob Harris, CAE, as the facilitator and reviewed models of innovative associations, as well as discussed the life cycle of an association and the concept of association erosion. Through the process, TWHBEA adopted a new mission statement and agreed on four goals that serve as the core competencies to which budget and committees should be aligned. The first three goals regarding the registry, promotion and advocacy are intended to elevate awareness and value. The fourth goal, leadership, addresses the necessary infrastructure of TWHBEA. The Executive Committee also identified strategies and priorities for each goal that are intended to advance those goals. A great deal of discussion during the two-day meeting centered around the desire to position TWHBEA as an umbrella to all facets of the breed and the need to support all organizations that serve the Tennessee Walking Horse community. A summary of the strategic plan can be found on page 45. On hand for the presentation of the portrait were (pictured from left to right) Mark Farrar, TWHBEA CEO, Dr. Jim and Lisa Baum, owners of Justified Honors, Commissioner Hatcher, and John Allen Callaway, the trainer and rider of the champion and Jeffrey Howard, Celebration Board Vice-Chair. TWHBEA has an offering of programs that are designed to recognize achievers who enjoy their Tennessee Walking Horses in a variety of ways. This year we are offering all members one free program with their membership! Members can choose to enroll in Motivated Mares, Gelding Opportunity, Versatility, or Trails (Distance). Certified Riding Instructors can also apply the free program offer to their annual certification renewal. For more information on the programs available for TWHBEA members, look on page 53. You can also visit www.twhbea.com and click on Programs (under The Breed tab) or email programs@ twhbea.com. This year’s Youth Judging Contest will be held on Friday, April 28. Once again, participants will be invited to attend The Celebration in August and the winners will be recognized in center ring. Youth ages 10 to 18 can participate as individuals and/or teams to compete for scholarships and prizes totaling $10,000. The scholarships are sponsored by TWHBEA and The Celebration. Participants are split into Junior and Senior divisions and will judge both conformation and performance classes. The entry deadline is Friday, April 21, 2023. Entry forms are available online at www.TWHBEA. com/youth/programs. For more information, contact Jessica Ozburn at 931-359-0583 or [email protected]. Beginning in 2023 we’ll recognize both a Junior Member of the Year (11 & Under) and a Senior Member of the Year (12-17). Once an individual has won the award in either division, they are no longer eligible to win it again in that division, but can continue to submit activities and be entered in the monthly drawings. All youth members who submit at least one activity in a given month will be entered into a drawing for $50. The overall “Members of the Year” will receive a cash prize, a full page advertisement in the VOICE magazine and have their photo displayed at the TWHBEA headquarters. For more information, visit www.twhbea.com and click on Special Youth Awards (under the Youth tab) or email [email protected]. Recognizing the important role of horses in field trials, TWHBEA offered a $500 prize to the winning handler of the National Field Trial Championships, if that handler rides a registered Tennessee Walking Horse in the competition. “This is one more way that people are enjoying their Tennessee Walking Horses,” said TWHBEA CEO Mark Farrar. “The smooth ride and disposition that our horses are best known for, along with the speed at which they travel, make them the ideal equine partner for field trial handlers.” The 124th running of the National Championship began on February 13, 2023 at Ames Plantation in Grand Junction, Tennessee. The competition runs on approximately 6,000 acres of the plantation and attracts several thousand field trial enthusiasts from all over the world each year. TWHBEA is excited about the upcoming show season and invites all shows to take advantage of our free show affiliation which allows exhibitors the ability to count points for affiliated shows for our International High Point Program. TWHBEA will promote all affiliated shows on our website, social media pages and e-blasts. Shows will also be listed on the TWHBEA calendar and their results included as part of the official show record in iPEDs. To affiliate your show for 2023, visit www. twhbea.com/affiliate. This year’s World Versatility Championship will be returning to the Tennessee Miller Coliseum in Murfreesboro, TN and will be held in conjunction with the 45th Annual International Pleasure & Colt Grand Championships. The Dressage classes for both shows will be on Thursday, July 20, and the remainder of the World Versatility Championship classes will be on Friday, July 21. The versatility classes for the International will be on Saturday, July 22, making it a “can’t miss” weekend for versatility competitors. The World Versatility Championships will offer more than $8,000 in prize money and awards this year, including the highly coveted high point awards. TWHBEA SIRE & DAM OF THE YEAR Each year TWHBEA honors the top sire and top dam in different classifications created by the Breeders’ Committee to recognize horses whose offspring have proven successful in the show ring. One classification is based on the “raw” or actual points acquired by the progeny of a sire or dam. The second classification is based on the “percentage” points acquired by the progeny of a sire or dam. Dam of the Year for Total Points and Percentage Points, Outstanding Mare of the Year Miss Annika, by Seve and out of Pure Vengeance. Bred by Barbara Mesimer and owned by Larry Mesimer. Ascending Sire of the Year (Tie) El Zorro’s Star, owned by Rick Compton. By Jose’ Jose’ and out of Pushers Evening Star, El Zorro’s Star has many offspring excelling in the showring, including Ole’, Capella, Simply Country, Lady Z and The Heart Of Mine. Tonight, TWHBEA once again salutes El Zorro’s Star for what is shaping up to be a legacy of talented and successful offspring. Sharing the honor with El Zorro’s Star is 2017 World Grand Champion Gen’s Black Maverick, owned by Lorraine Rosbury. Gen’s Black Maverick is sired by Gen’s Black Gen and out of Cash’s for Roses and has quickly made his mark on the industry by siring young showring superstars. Sire of the Year (total points) The 2022 Total Point Sire of The Year is the many-time previous recipient of the award, Jose’ Jose’. Owned by Five Star Stallions of Wartrace, Tennessee, Jose’ Jose’ is sired by Gen’s Major General and out of Stormy’s Ruby. He was the 1998 World Champion Two-Year-Old Stallion and 1998 World Grand Champion Two-Year-Old. He defended his titles by winning both awards in 1999 as a Three-Year-Old as well. Jose’ Jose’ was inducted into the TWHBEA Hall Of Fame in 2019. As of Celebration 2022, offspring of Jose’ Jose’ have won 947 World and Reserve World titles. He has sired 3,133 TWHBEA registered foals. His progeny have won a World Grand Championship in every division at the Celebration except one. He has not had a Weanling World Grand Champion. To date he has sired 5 Reserve World Grand Champion Weanlings. Jose’ Jose’ was bred by Dr. and Mrs. Rafael Rigual of Oklahoma City, Oklahoma. Sire of the Year (percentage points) The Sire of the Year based on percentage is Allen All Around owned by Leland Ritter, Sr. of Columbia, Tennessee.
