Voice Magazine and TWHBEA Executive Director July 23, 2019

RE: Where Am I? Case of Missing Registration Voice June-July 2019
Dear Voice Magazine and Mr. Williams,
Let me suggest a portion of the lack registration may include poor health and death of the foal crop. An outreach cam-
paign on health care of weanlings to small breeders and TWH community should be part of TWBEAs goal. It would do
TWH and TN economy good.
I exported 8-month old colt from Tennessee to my home. Since receiving the animal, I have been steadily working with
my vet to catch up on her health. The animal I own was in the seller’s pen with two horses of similar status and I can
only imagine that they are in very poor health or deceased by now.
The animal had these conditions upon arrival:
• Skin fungus-this cleared up with grooming and nutrition after 8 weeks
• Worms-special concern with getting worms out without causing impaction colic. There were worms in feces found
for 6 weeks. Special care ongoing.
• Very poor nutritional status that has caused behind normal size and growth. Ongoing work with vet. Now she gets both
normal supplementation as well as additional calcium for catch up in the next year.
Although the joke here is that this is to be expected from horses from Tennessee, I love the breed and it should not be
this way. How much more could it possibly cost in time and effort to be sure that the animal is receiving enough food
to keep weight and worm them a few times. If horses are to continue to be an export and good for TN economy, there is
much room for improvement.
I had a basic health check for conformational flaws and Coggins by a vet in TN before she shipped. But the immediate
message back from the shipper was the horse was in poor health status and on poor pasture. Both assessments assured
me that the horse was bright-in-the-eye and with good character, so I proceeded with the purchase. The yearling brings
me much joy and I am very happy to have possession.
Just wanted to give you my two cents on the matter because I care.
Sincerely,
Tracy
Thanks Tracy, our Equine Welfare division is working hard to share care, health and wellness videos and
articles. Not only do we inform our member base on email and the website, but we also work with many state
agencies to that effect. I am sorry to hear that you have had some experience of receiving horses that were not
in premium condition when they got to your place. We would be happy to review any specific circumstances
and/or conditions if you would kindly alert us to them. Our division, consistent with the name, is concerned
with equine welfare. We are always, within our limitations, of course, happy to work with horse owners, sell-
ers and prospective horse owners to the goal that the horses involved are healthy, well cared for, and in good
shape.

TWHBEA Summer SizzlerOn Thursday, July 25th, 2019, at 5:00 pm in
the Calsonic Arena in Shelbyville TWHBEA™
kicked off the inaugural Summer Sizzler© horse
show inviting both padded and flat-shod per-
formance disciplines. It was a full 34 class show
that featured 142 entries with 139 horses being
shown. Robbie Spiller tied the classes and hors-
es as the judge for the night. The show opened
with an invocation by our own Executive Direc-
tor, Rory Williams, the national anthem sung
by Jennifer Barr, and Crystal Deputy presented
the flag for Kimberly Walden riding Diamond
at the Ritz.
The show drew a crowd of over 300 on a Thurs-
day night in Shelbyville as everyone was anx-
ious to see how the Celebration judge would
be tieing the classes with the Celebration being
only a few weeks away. The classes were filled
with fantastic competition and did not leave the
crowd disappointed. From trail pleasure to Rid-
er’s Cup 3-year-olds the Summer Sizzler had it
all with high participation and excitement from
the participants about the inaugural show.
At the end of the night, after Dallas Eubank
called 33 classes and the judge had made her
decision, it was down to class 34, the Summer
Sizzler Stake Championship. Tthree partici-
pants answered the gate call and gave it their all.
Tyler Baucom riding Von Miller came out on
top of the placing order. Thursday night round-
ed off two great days for TWHBEA™, and we
thank all the trainers and exhibitors that came
out to support our inaugural show. We hope to
see you all again next year!

TERM AND ELECTION OF DIRECTORS. Directors shall be elected not later than the first day of November of each year. Their term of office shall commence at the annual December meeting of the
membership to be held as set out in these Bylaws. The method of election, the number of Directors to be elected, the notice to be given for said election, the nature and extent of any oath of office
which may be required and the methods of enforcement thereof, and all other matters relating to same shall be fixed by resolution of the Board of Directors, and the same rules and regulations
governing the said election shall be effective in each state or
region. Each Director shall be elected for a term of three (3) years. No person elected as a director in the United States shall be eligible to be a Director
for more than two (2) full consecutive terms; however, a person may serve more than two (2) non-consecutive terms as a Director.
Section 4. QUALIFICATIONS AND REMOVAL OF DIRECTORS.
Each Director shall possess the following qualifications:
(a) Each Director shall be a resident of the state or region from which he is elected;
(b) Each Director shall be eighteen (18) years of age or older at the beginning of the election period;
(c) Each Director must have been a dues-paying member of the Association for at least the past three (3) consecutive years;
(d) A Director may not be serving a USDA-initiated and finally adjudicated Horse Protection Act suspension of thirty (30) days or longer or have served any such HPA suspension in the last 365
days, nor be serving any HPA suspension of thirty days or longer from any USDA certified horse industry organization during the Director’s term or his/her term will be terminated;
(e) Each director must take and at all times conform to the oath of office extant at the time of the director’s election and as amended at any time during the term of office;
(f) Each potential Director must have had at least one horse duly registered with the Association for a period of one year, commencing as of August 1 of the preceding year to be elected, and must
keep at least one horse continuously registered throughout the duration of the election period and the term.
For horses registered in the name of a Corporation, the name of the owner of record on the registration form or on the transfer form will be honored. Partnership horses will not qualify any of
their owners for election. A horse owned by a married couple, either jointly or severally, qualifies either spouse for election, but only one spouse shall be eligible for election if the married couple
only owns one duly registered horse.
To ensure compliance with all required qualifications, a monthly audit may be made on all directors by the TWHBEA. If any director is found to be non-compliant there would be allowed a “grace
period” of 60 days to comply. At the expiration of sixty (60) days, and if no other horse was registered to that Director, that director would be removed and replaced with the next alternate from
his/her state or region.
A director may be removed from his office by the Board of Directors for just cause. “Just cause” shall be defined as a violation by the director of any By-Law, Rule or regulation promulgated
herein, or of any state or federal law affecting the Walking Horse breed and/or any show, exhibition, contest or competition, or sale relating thereto.
Declared directors are all partially validated at the time of editing this magazine. The official ballot will only
include those fully vetted candidates for each state and region.

The Tennessee Walking Horse Breeders’ and Exhibi-
tors’ Association, in association with FAST, is proud
to announce the re-establishment of the Youth Me-
dallion Program. This class encourages youth riders
to learn and become proficient at the canter. It is a
great way for our industry to regain the canter, and to
reward our youth for achieving excellence at this level.
Youth Medallion classes will be offered at various
horse shows throughout the year. There will be two
divisions, performance and pleasure, each division
with its own end-of-year award. Riders will receive
points determined by their placings in these two • Classes are for Flat-Shod and padded Perfor-

Hamilton
Riding Camp
By Lauren Hamilton
My father, Howard Hamilton started this
riding camp almost 30 years ago. Grow-
ing up I was a counselor, so to me, I feel
like I learned from the best! His goal
was to share his love of our wonderful
breed and has in turn brought many new
people into this industry. Now I am the
primary instructor with his assistance.
We always started from the ground up,
from the care and preparation right on
up to riding not just Pleasure but perfor-
mance horses as well. Everything we do
at camp is centered around horses, from
our art projects, to extra activities such
as bareback riding and horse relays. I
take around 15 campers and work solely
with them all week. We make Southern
Serenity our home for the week and wrap
it up with our camp horse show for par-
ents and friends to come see what they
have learned all week. This is my passion
and my hobby and I love to share it. I
think riding not only builds confidence
but instills so many wonderful values that
kids can take on and use in their day to
day lives.

Soon enough, Keeps found a friend and partner in Gilmer as his
new trainer who picked up where Day left off and carried him
into continued success. Keeps was Brought to Gilmer on Dec. 29,
1997 and the team made their debut in 1998 at the Jackson, Mis-
sissippi show where they won both the preliminary and cham-
pionship. They went on to unanimously win more stake titles
that year and had a preliminary win at the Celebration and were
fifth in the stake. In 2000 the team showed only twice before the
Celebration. They won the stake at Lewisburg a reserve at Wood-
bury and a reserve spot in the preliminary at the Celebration. On
Saturday night the then nine-year-old stallion and his deter-
mined rider were primed and ready. Both Brawner and Gilmer
felt Keeps made a near-perfect performance on Saturday night in
the championship.

of his death at 28 years old by Jeanne Morrison of Hattiesburg,
Mississippi. In addition to the Morrison Stables family “Keeps”
was loved by many, including his long-time trainer, Ray Gilmer
of West Tennessee and his former owners Elridge and the late
Harrell Brawer.
After winning his first World Grand Championship with Gilmer
in 2000, in what many at the time called the best Celebration
stake class in many years, Keeps came back to earn the Planta-
tion Pleasure Lite-Shod World Championship in 2006, also with
Gilmer. After winning the title in 2000 for the Brawners, Gilmer
said Keeps had a motor that only got stronger with time.
Foaled in 1991 Keeps was started by Sammy Day and early on in
his career the two of them collected their fair share of top prizes
together, including 1995, Four-Year-Old World Grand Champi-
onship as well as the preliminary for stallions. Under Day’s guid-
ance, Cash For Keeps was the first horse to defeat. He was Puttin
on the Ritz at Pulaski in 1994. In 1995, the team was part of one
of the greatest showdowns in Celebration memory. No one who
saw it will forget the workout between Day and Keeps and Our
