Free Foal Registrations Are Back!!
This has been a truly exciting year! I cannot remember a year that seemed to fly by as fast
as this one. Not only have we seen and heard of many small victories of legal persuasion
but we have witnessed the resiliency and dedication of the Tennessee Walking Horse fans,
owners, breeders, trainers and exhibitors. We have seen the establishment upset in Washington,
D.C. by a real estate magnet billionaire and closer to the barn, that HSUS’s disguise is wearing
thin and see-through to the American public. We are so very grateful for all the work completed by our volunteers, for the
registry business that keeps on coming, for the continued assistance and advertising for the magazine which is our breed's
journal after all, for the steady devotion of the staff and the leadership provided by our Executive Committee and President.
In 2016 elation was felt in every corner of our industry when on behalf of Honors, Keith McSwain et al, fought and won
in court against the USDA for due process enforcement thereby benefitting all exhibitors and every single show from Belfast,
TN to Bastrop, TX and beyond. Yet, it was the stallion, Honors', whose singular talent and athletic ability won the World
Grand Championship at the Celebration. There will be stories told about that horse for decades to come. Project Pegasus is
off to a great start researching and developing objective test protocols for inspections. TWHBEA withstood legal attack by
APHIS as well, preventing unharnessed access to database records gov’t agents and winning the motion to invoice APHIS
for all research time required to comply with subpoenas. Supporters and enthusiasts turned out in high volume to oppose
the arbitrary rule-making change proposed by APHIS, surprising those of the equine world expecting no opposition. And,
recently even those that cater to sister-breeds of horse stood up and succinctly quieted a disgruntled rumor-monger.
The volunteers helping administer the youth program, the Versatility World Show, the Belfast Show, the World Series
championship and the National Futurity were directly responsible for each and every success, notwithstanding the entries,
of course. And, though it is late in the year, membership in the association has crested 6,400 members for a second year
in a row. As we reported earlier in the year, breeding is up year over year by more than 200 mares (in some barns as much
as a 14% increase was reported) and we expect that 2017 will realize a stronger foal crop in the market for trail, utility and
show horses. With continued membership, support of the association and the breed itself, we can bring the industry back to
flourish again. 2017 is upon us now and we’re looking ahead to what can be done. Stay tuned for the next issue of the Voice
of the Tennessee Walking Horse as we bring you more great stories of people, horses, shows and successes from the local
area and from all around our beautiful world.
Lastly, as we approach the 2nd hour past deadline, let me say that many of our customers have clamored for free foal
registrations (application only, the DNA kit remains a charged necessity), scaled pricing for lifetime memberships and fewer
time categories for registrations and transfers. Well, it is here now – for a three year, five year or lifetime membership the
customer is entitled to a free foal registration in each year. Additionally, the lifetime member has their choice of a free
registration application or transfer each year. Since 1998, the TWHBEA has not undertaken such an all encompassing fee
structure change and given that the consumer price index has increased 181 points since that time, it was certainly due.
Take a look at our website for the complete list of fees and services provided by the Tennessee Walking Horse Breeders' and
Exhibitors' Association.
I am both proud and humbled to work for such a body of men and women and to lead the full-time staff of this association.
Thank you all for a good year; now, let’s get busy on the next one. In closing - It is you, all of you, who really keep ‘em
walking! Thank you for all you do: Merry Christmas and may a Blessed New Year be yours.
Correction
Inadvertently we left out two very special High Point Award categories in the last issue of the Voice Magazine covering the
TWHBEA World Series Versatility Championship. The Overall High Point Champions are Victory Trip and Shelby Finch and
the Elite High Point Champions are Victory Trip and Linda Starnes. Congratulations on earning these titles, it takes lots of
hard work and dedication achieving this just in 2 days!

In 1973 he rode Delight’s Bummin’ Around to the World Grand
Championship title. In 1982 Gray won his second World Grand
Championship with Pride’s Secret Threat, which he had also ridden to
the two, three and four-year-old world championship titles. His next win

in both the preliminary and grand championship classes. The final World
Grand Championship ride for Billy was in 2010 aboard The Coach.
Billy Gray was named Trainer of the Year by his peers in 1972 and

Gray will be truly missed in the walking horse industry but not forgotten.

Being one of SW’s sons he often is asked, “what is the
future of the industry per Bobby?” His response was quite
to the point. “Regardless of the rules, the regulations or
the opinion, there will always be a Tennessee Walking
Horse and a show horse to perpetuate the breed.” He
believes that, “the Breeders’ could be the leader of the
industry again, maybe not in its’ current form exactly,
but that the time is right now for the industry to coalesce
under the mantle of one governing body and lend a
concerted effort to maintaining responsibility for the
whole of it.” He further asserted that no one markets the
breed widely except the TWHBEA, and when pushed
for singular clarity on his points, Bobby said, “TWHBEA
has to be involved in all aspects of the Walking Horse
industry from the rule book to training to research and
development for objective inspections.”

Give the gift of belonging . . .
Say Merry Christmas to your trainers by purchasing or renewing a membership for them to the Ten-
nessee Walking Horse Breeders’ and Exhibitors’ Association.
As you know the Futurity, International High Point, World Series and other programs you participate
in, require your trainer to be a member. This is a way of saying “I appreciate your hard work and dedica-
tion to the breed”.
If you can’t put a pony under the tree, give them
the next best thing . . .
A membership to the Tennessee Walking Horse Youth Association (TWHYA)
For $20 you can give that horse loving child a membership to an all youth association (horse
ownership not required). They can join in the fun, events, have a place to learn horsemanship and all
about Tennessee Walking Horses and a member only Facebook page to talk with each other.
