were exactly like the previous horse I owned while
growing up. We both learned and grew together –
myself in foal handling, horsemanship, and training
skills, and “Sunday” in developing into the great trail
horse that she now is. I have always called her my
“greatest piece of art.” I think what helped our bond
is that we both had similar character traits that fed off
each other – patience, tolerance, respect, and every
once in a while feeling our “oats” which kept things

Sunday has existed, she frequently comes up to the
gate to greet me when I pull into the driveway. She
also comes to me when I whistle, saving me having
to cross the pasture to catch her or bring her into
the barn. She also recognizes my voice, even in the
dark or out of view, as I always talk to my horses,
being the great listeners that they are. Besides, if a Pimilico Racetrack in Maryland
firm tone is used, she knows she is being corrected
and responds accordingly. She is frequently eager
to take the bit in her mouth before I even get it close
to her, sometimes lipping the leather straps in her
mouth instead of the bit because she is so ready to
go. I have since raised and owned several other nice
horses and foals, but “Sunday”, being like a firstborn
child, always holds a special place in my heart.

Oregon FFA

The Tennessee Walking Horse Breeders’ and
Exhibitors’ Association hosted the Oregon FFA
officers to a day of horses in Tennessee. The offi-
cers started the day at TWHBEA headquarters in
Lewisburg, Tennessee and were served breakfast
and told all about the Tennessee Walking Horse.
They learned how very versatile our breed is from
being the world’s greatest show, trail and plea-
sure horse.

The next stop was at Rising Star Ranch
where they got to meet some of the industries
world famous walking horse stallions, Jose’ Jose’,
I Am Jose’ and Lined With Cash just to name a
few. David Williams gave them a tour and ex-
plained all about the breeding business in the
walking horse industy.

Last but not least the group went to ThorSport
Farm in Murfreesboro, Tennessee. ThorSport
Farm is home to about 60 independently-owned
horses of various breeds including, the Tennes-
see Walking Horse, Quarter Horses, American
Saddlebreds, Welsh, Shetland ponies and Thor-
oughbreds. Along with horses, Allison Thorson
and her family own ThorSport Racing, FarmPaint,
Tenda, ThorTurf, and EquiClear. They also got to
learn from their onsite veterinarian Blake Ev-
erett. They were showed around their facilities
and given an awesome demonstration on Tenda
products. It was overall a very eventful and infor-

progenitors (immature) cells that are naturally pro-

grammed to produce an anti-inflammatory response

when exposed to an inflammatory environment such

as an arthritic joint. He adds, “A series of studies

in horses with experimentally induced OA revealed

that intra-articular injection of BMNC replenishes

the inflamed joint with healthy macrophages, which

allowed them to maximize their anti-inflammatory

effects, favoring the recovery of a healthy articular

environment.”

Based on the positive results noted with intra-artic-

ular injection of BMNC, Everett and his colleagues

performed a clinical trial. “Our clinical trial evaluated

the ability of intra-articular BMNC (injection into the

affected joint) to improve clinical signs of naturally

occurring OA in horses,” says Everett. “We hypothe-

sized that intra-articular BMNC administration would

reduce lameness and joint inflammation compared to

negative controls, and that the reduction in lameness

and joint inflammation would not differ from a positive

control, corticosteroids.”

Everett’s research team studied 19 horses separat-

ed into one of three groups. One group treated with

BMNC, an untreated control group (saline), and a

positive control group treated with a corticosteroid

(triamcinolone).

Research he presented at the American Associa-

tion of Equine Practitioner’s 2020 virtual conference

and at the American College of Veterinary Surgeons

Conference, demonstrated that the novel treatment

is very promising. Everett finds it exciting, too, “be-

cause cells can be collected from the patient them-

selves, do not require extensive processing, and

have the potential to benefit thousands of people and

horses suffering from arthritis.”

The trial revealed BMNC-treated horses had sig-

nificantly reduced lameness after 21 days. “Limb
