Rooster Crowing Contest

RULES, REGULATIONS AND INFORMATION
1. The 2017 Rooster Crowing Contest will be held Tuesday, October 3 from 4:00 pm to 4:30 pm.
2. The location of the contest will be at the front entrance of the Poultry & Pigeons building.
3. Fifty cent (.50) entry fee is required.
4. Pre-entry is required. On the day of the contest, the participant will be admitted to the
Fairgrounds upon presentation of rooster, or if rooster is on exhibit, a pass will be issued by
the Poultry Superintendent.
5. The contest is open to the world: LIMIT: One Bird Per Exhibitor.
6. The bird with the largest number of crows wins the championship. The Fair will
provide special prizes for the Grand Champion and Reserve Champion.
7. Any ties will be "crowed off" by rules set up by the committee in charge of contest.
8. Roosters will be penned in individual coops and handlers cannot clap or annoy birds.
Exhibitors will not be permitted to disturb rooster during contest.

RULES, REGULATIONS AND INFORMATION
1. Entries are open to residents of North Carolina and the following adjacent counties in Vir-
ginia: Carroll, Patrick and Grayson. There is no entry fee. All exhibits must be pre-entered
on Dixie Classic Fair entry blanks. Entry blanks must be fully completed. You must include
Exhibitors Name, Address, Phone Number & The Last Four (4) Digits of the Social Security
Number in order to receive prize money. Entry blanks must be mailed to the Dixie Classic Fair,
PO Box 68, Winston-Salem, NC 27102 and MUST be postmarked no later than September 1.
2. Entries will be acknowledged with an exhibitor’s letter and entry tags for each exhibit. The
exhibitor’s letter will contain instructions on where to bring your exhibit. Entry tags must be
brought attached to the exhibit described on tag. PLEASE ATTACH ENTRY TAG TO UPPER
RIGHT HAND CORNER FRONT SIDE OF ITEM WHERE PRACTICAL AND POSSIBLE.
DO NOT REMOVE CLAIM CHECK FROM TAG. It will be removed and returned to you at
time of entry by the Department worker. All items are to be picked up Monday after the Fair.
You must bring your Claim Check(s) back with you to pick up your items on Monday after the
Fair. Without the Claim Check, the Fair Management reserves the right to hold any exhibit
for proven ownership.
3. IF YOU HAVE ENTERED YOUR ITEM IN A PREVIOUS YEAR IT MAY NOT BE
ENTERED AGAIN. Exhibitors may only enter one item per item number. Do not enter
“Judge’s Choice” Categories, all first place winners will be considered. All entries must
be original and must have been completed after previous year’s Fair. Any and all articles
obnoxious or repulsive in character (including nudity) will be forbidden entry, or if entered
without being fully known, shall be removed at once. Signs or cards on any exhibit des-
ignating that products are for sale will not be permitted. Superintendents reserve the right
of selection on questions of originality, categories and framing. Judges’ decision is final.
4. Size Limits: Exhibit must be within size limit listed within the category.
5. The Fair Management, Employees, Department Workers and Volunteers will take every
precaution to protect exhibits but will not be held responsible for any loss, breakage
or damage to any article on exhibit.
6. All entries must be the original design of the exhibitor. No class work accepted. Work which
has been exhibited in the Fair in previous years may not be re-entered. Exhibitors may submit
only one entry in each category. Fine Arts size limits: Entries not to exceed 40" on any

JUDGING
Judging will take place Friday at 11:00 am and Wednesday at 11:00 am No one will be
allowed on the show floor except judges, clerks and show officials after judging begins. The
show will open to the public during posted fair hours except on Fri., 9/29 11:00-2:00pm,
Tues. 10/3 3:00pm-close and Wed. 10/4 11:00 - 2:00pm.
PREMIUMS
1. PREMIUM CHECKS WILL BE VOID 60 DAYS AFTER ISSUE.
2. PREMIUMS WILL BE PAID BY CHECK AFTER FAIR. Only one check will be issued to an
exhibitor covering all premiums won by the individual. CHECKS WILL BE ISSUED TO THE
GARDEN CLUBS FOR ITS MEMBERS. Federal tax ID number for Garden Club must be
included on entry blank. Garden club must include the name of the Garden Club on the
entry blank. Other exhibitors must provide the last four digits of their Social Security
number (see entry blank) in order to receive prize money.
GENERAL RULES
1. PRE-ENTRY REQUIRED IN ALL CLASSES, CONTAINER GROWN PLANTS,
DESIGN, COLLECTION AND ALL CUT HORTICULTURE. Please use General En-
try Form. Bring to Home & Garden Building - see map inside back cover, Bldg. #15.
2. Entries will be received from 8:00am until 10:00am on Friday, Sept. 29 and Wed., Oct. 4, 2017.
The Classification Committee MUST approve ALL exhibits for conformance to the SCHEDULE.
3. These two flower shows are for AMATEURS ONLY. Classes are not open to commercial
growers or professional floral designers ie.... classes are not open to anyone who, at present
or in the past, has received his or her livelihood from the growing or designing of classifications
listed in this catalog.
4. The NGC Handbook for Flower Shows, 2017 and as updated in The National Gardener,
is the source for the rules, scales of points and awards.
5. NOTE TO GARDEN CLUB MEMBERS: National Garden Clubs, Inc. permits cash
awards to individual garden club members in the Standard Flower Show. If the gar-
den club member wishes the cash premium to be issued personally, he or she must
include the last four digits of his or her social security number on the entry form. If no
social security number is entered, the premium will be issued to his or her garden club.
6. Judging will be conducted by PANELS of three NGC approved Judges and will begin at
11:00am and end no later than 2:00pm on Fri., 9/29 and Wed., 10/4/17. The decisions of the
judges will be FINAL. Awards may be withheld if not merited. All competitive judging will be based
on the National Garden Clubs, Inc. (NGC) Standard System of Awarding. Only Judges, Clerks,
General Chairman and Classification Chairman will be allowed in the exhibit area during judging.
7. Only one entry may be made in any named class. Exhibits entered in the Friday show
may not be re-entered in the Wednesday show. ROSES ONLY: Multiple entries permitted,
including Collections - provided varieties are different.
8. There must be an emphasis on fresh plant material. No artificial plant material is
allowed in any division.
9. Only one member of a family may exhibit in any one class, except Design
Classes. THE FAIR RESERVES THE RIGHT TO WITHHOLD ALL PREMIUMS WON IN
ANY CLASS BY ANY FAMILY BREAKING THE RULE.
10. Exhibits may NOT be removed before the SHOW closes on Tues., 10/3 @ 3:00pm and
Mon. 10/9 @ 10:00am. NO EXCEPTIONS!!!!!
11. Awards in any class will be given only if merited, and only ONE blue, ONE red, and ONE
yellow ribbon will be awarded in each class. Honorable mention ribbons bearing no premium
will be awarded as merited in large classes of high quality.
12. Premiums will be paid only from awards as they appear on the books and not from ribbons.
13. Ribbons must be picked up after the fair. NO RIBBONS WILL BE MAILED.

Blue Ribbon (1st place) - Must score 90 or more points

White Ribbon (4th Place) - Must score 75 or more points
No material covered by the Plant Protection and Conservation Act (1 July 1980) or the

Floriculture - Design Regulations For Friday Show
(Please refer to the NGC Flower Show Design Division Policies and Guidelines on pages
79-81 of the Handbook for Flower Shows Revised 2017)
1. Each design must be the work of one exhibitor and that exhibtor's name must appear on
the entry card.
2. PRE-ENTER on Dixie Classic Fair GENERAL entry blank at the back of the catalog.
THIS IS VERY IMPORTANT: TO ENSURE YOUR CHOICE OF CLASS AND AN ACKNOWL-
EDGMENT, ENTER BEFORE SEPTEMBER 1.
3. An exhibitor may only enter ONE exhibit per class but may enter more than one class..
4. If the Designer is unable to fulfill his or her commitment/assignment, it is the re-
sponsibility of the designer to provide a substitute.
5. There will NOT be accessibility to electricity for a design. Please be aware of this and
use appropriate substitutes ( i.e. battery-operated lighting).
6. Each design must contain some plant material. exhibitor need not have grown the plant
material used in the design. All known plant material should be listed on a provided 3"x5"
card by the botanical and common names.

8. Please refer to the North Carolina Plant Conservation List and the State and Threatened
Plants in the current GCNC Engagement Calendar. The use of artificial flowers, foliage,
fruit or vegetables is prohibited in the Design Division.
9. Fresh plant material may be stripped, clipped, trimmed, curled, folded, tied or otherwise
manipulated. Coloring or treating of fresh plant material is NEVER permitted. However, dried
plant material may be colored and/or treated.
10. Accessories, bases and/or underlays are allowed in ALL classes. Please refer to page
81, Handbook for Flower Shows Revised 2017 for a list in all design classes unless prohibited
by the schedule, law or specific requirements of a Design Top Award.
11. Landscapes or scenes are not permitted in the Design Division.
12. Each designer will be given a completed entry card by the Entries Committee and is then
directed by Placement committee to location. Upon completion of the design, Classification
checks for conformance to the schedule, allows for necessary adjustments by the designer,
then initials entry card when approved.
13. Please mark (inconspicuously) your container, base or accessory and DO NOT USE
VALUABLE ACCESSORIES. Fair Management, the Flower Show Committees, the Garden
Club Council of Winston-Salem/Forsyth County, and the Winston-Salem Judges Council will
not be responsible for damage or loss of property, though reasonable care will be taken to
protect all materials exhibited.

15. Any non-perishable food products are allowed, but must be sealed if the possibility exists
for attracting insects or producing undesirable odor.

1. Each design must be the work of one exhibitor and that exhibtor's name must appear on
the entry card.
2. PRE-ENTER on Dixie Classic Fair GENERAL entry blank at the back of the catalog.
THIS IS VERY IMPORTANT: TO ENSURE YOUR CHOICE OF CLASS AND AN ACKNOWL-
EDGMENT, ENTER BEFORE SEPTEMBER 1.
3. An exhibitor may only enter ONE exhibit per class but may enter more than one class..
4. If the Designer is unable to fulfill his or her commitment/assignment, it is the re-
sponsibility of the designer to provide a substitute.
5. There will NOT be accessibility to electricity for a design. Please be aware of this and
use appropriate substitutes ( i.e. battery-operated lighting).
6. Each design must contain some plant material. Exhibitor need not have grown the plant
material used in the design. All known plant material should be listed on a provided 3"x5"
card by the botanical and common names.

8. Please refer to the North Carolina Plant Conservation List and the State and Threatened
Plants in the current GCNC Engagement Calendar. The use of artificial flowers, foliage,
fruit or vegetables is prohibited in the Design Division.
9. Fresh plant material may be stripped, clipped, trimmed, curled, folded, tied or otherwise
manipulated. Coloring or treating of fresh plant material is NEVER permitted. However, dried
plant material may be colored and/or treated.
10. Accessories, bases and/or underlays are allowed in ALL classes. Please refer to page
81, Handbook for Flower Shows Revised 2017 for a list in all design classes unless prohibited
by the schedule, law or specific requirements of a Design Top Award.
11. Landscapes or scenes are not permitted in the Design Division.
12. Each designer will be given a completed entry card by the Entries Committee and is then
directed by Placement committee to location. Upon completion of the design, Classification
checks for conformance to the schedule, allows for necessary adjustments by the designer,
then initials entry card when approved.
13. Please mark (inconspicuously) your container, base or accessory and DO NOT USE
VALUABLE ACCESSORIES. Fair Management, the Flower Show Committees, the Garden
Club Council of Winston-Salem/Forsyth County, and the Winston-Salem Judges Council will
not be responsible for damage or loss of property, though reasonable care will be taken to
protect all materials exhibited.

15. Any non-perishable food products are allowed, but must be sealed if the possibility exists
for attracting insects or producing undesirable odor.

If you need help with the classification of your horticulture specimens, please go
to Reynolda Gardens. The staff of Reynolda Gardens will help you. Entry forms
are due by Sept. 1, 2017.
GENERAL RULES
1. Only one member of a family may exhibit only one entry in any one class. (See rules on
page 107).
2. Pre-entry is required for Horticulture specimens on the Friday and Wednesday
Shows. Please enter all categories in which you MAY have specimens. Once entry tags
are received, bring only the tags and specimens that you feel are qualified for show(s).
(See times and place to bring exhibit listed below.) The GENERAL Entry form is located
in the back of this catalog.
3. If the exhibit is incorrectly entered, it will not be placed for judging. Subdividing of any
class in the Dixie Classic Fair Flower Shows is PROHIBITED.
4. All plant material entered in the Horticulture Division must be fresh and grown by the
exhibitor. Exception: plants grown from seed, seedling, cuttings or immature transplants,
bulbs, corms, tubers and rhizomes.
5. Specimens may not be treated with products that may artificially change the natural color,
shine or texture.
6. All entries should be labeled with BOTH the common and botanical names (genus, species
and/or variety). ONLY PROPERLY NAMED EXHIBITS WILL BE ELIGIBLE FOR TOPAWARDS.
7. The Flower Show Committee will furnish clear glass containers on a "First Come, First
Serve" basis. From then on, exhibitors will furnish their own containers for all horticulture
entries, using clear small size drink bottles for small specimens and clear glass container for
collections and larger clear glass specimens. Foil pans may be used for camellias, gourds
and vegetables. WEDGING WITH CLEAR PLASTIC WRAP IS PERMITTED. IN THE ROSE
DIVISION, WEDGING IS PERMITTED WITH ANY APPROPRIATE MATERIAL.
8. Only one specimen plant to a container in all classes except Hanging Baskets, Wax
Begonias, Impatiens, Bromeliads or where noted in schedule.
9. Clay or plastic containers preferred for container grown plants. (NO CONTAINER OVER
12" IN DIAMETER WILL BE ACCEPTED. CONTAINERS WILL BE MEASURED FROM
INSIDE RIM TO OPPOSITE SIDE INSIDE RIM. EXHIBITOR MUST BE PREPARED TO
PLACE ENTRY) Container Grown plants should be no more than 48" in height/width
(or discretion of the committee). Sticking is permitted, but should be unobtrusive and
not extend above the top of the plant. Please bring only worthy specimens qualified
for show due to space issues.
9. Please note Conservation List on Page 108.
10. Specimens on their own roots WILL NOT be accepted in Classes I-105 through I-361
and J-105 through J-361.
11. Horticulture must have been in the possession of the exhibitor at least 90 days.
12. Cut specimens should not have foliage below the water line (exception - glads).

Container plants will be judged during FRIDAY, SEPTEMBER 29 flower show.
1. All Container-Grown Plants REQUIRE pre-entry on Dixie Classic Fair entry blanks found
at the back of this catalog and must be received no later than September 1.
2. Put both common and botanical names of exhibit on entry tags. If not so identi-
fied, the entry will NOT be eligible for a TOP AWARD. Please be sure all information is
on tag received from Fair office.
3. Container-Grown plants must have been in the possession of the exhibitor AT LEAST
THREE MONTHS BEFORE EXHIBITING THEM except for Classes I-94 through I-96 which
must be in the exhibitor's possession for at least 6 weeks. NO CONTAINER OVER 12" IN
DIAMETER WILL BE ACCEPTED. CONTAINERS WILL BE MEASURED FROM INSIDE
RIM TO OPPOSITE SIDE INSIDE RIM. EXHIBITOR MUST BE PREPARED TO PLACE

FUNCTIONAL TABLE (FOR 1) DESIGN - A TABLE DESIGN restricted to one table setting.
The exhibit must always include a decorative unit. Decorative Unit should be in proportion to
the one (1) place setting. (see Page 76, dv. in Handbook for Flower Shows, revised 2017.)
FUNCTIONAL TABLE - A TABLE exhibit planned and set for the actual service of food, capable
of funtioning for dining as displayed. The exhibit must ALWAYS include a decorative unit.
Coordination of all components MUST be balanced with in the overall space. Convenience and
a sense of order must prevail. (see Page 76 p. in Handbook for Flower Shows, revised 2017)
ILLUMINARY DESIGN - A Creative Design incorporating light(s) for special effect. The light-
ing must be an integral part of the design and its effect readily apparent. (see Page 74 in

PERENNIAL - A plant that lives for 2 or more years, typically producing flowers and seeds
each year after reaching maturity. (see page 50, Handbook for Flower Shows, revised 2017)
REFLECTIVE DESIGN - A Creative Design containing material(s) that reflect, give back
image(s) of light or other components to the viewer. (see Page 75 in Handbook for Flower
Shows, revised 2017).
Traditional Design - Style of flroal design created prior to the mid-Twentieth Century such
as Line Design, Line Mass Design and Mass Design. (see Pages 69-71 in Handbook for
Flower shows, revised 2017 ).
TRANSPARENCY DESIGN - A Creative Design including see-through element(s) that per-
mit some components to be viewed through others. (see Page 77 in Handbook for Flower

TREATED PLANT MATERIAL - Plant material whose exterior appearance has been artificially
altered by a substance such as dye, paint, etc. ONLY DRIED PLANT MATERIAL MAY BE

4. Entries are open to members of the Winston-Salem Florist Association who:

b) are employees or owners
(Please note: If a shop is a member of the WSFA, then all employees are considered

5. Materials must be fresh, dried, or natural, unless otherwise specified by category. No
artificial or silk materials may be used, except for props and accessories.
6. Props, accessories, or any other part of the exhibit may not be removed until the end of
the Show as stated by the Dixie Classic Fair Handbook.
7. The Show Superintendent, Fair Committee, and the Winston-Salem Florist Association
will assume NO responsibility for loss and/or damage to personal property.

RULES, REGULATIONS AND INFORMATION
1. Entries are open to residents of North Carolina and the following adjacent counties in
Virginia: Carroll, Patrick and Grayson. There is no entry fee. All exhibits must be pre-entered
on Dixie Classic Fair entry blanks. Entry blanks must be fully completed. You must include
Exhibitors Name, Address, Phone Number & The Last Four (4) Digits of the Social Security
Number in order to receive prize money. Entry blanks must be mailed to the Dixie Classic Fair,
PO Box 68, Winston-Salem, NC 27102 and MUST be postmarked no later than September 1.
2. Entries will be acknowledged with an exhibitor’s letter and entry tags for each exhibit.
The exhibitor’s letter will contain instructions on where to bring your exhibit. Entry tags must be
brought attached to the exhibit described on tag. PLEASE ATTACH ENTRY TAG TO UPPER
RIGHT HAND CORNER FRONT SIDE OF ITEM WHERE PRACTICAL AND POSSIBLE. DO
NOT REMOVE CLAIM CHECK FROM TAG. It will be removed and returned to you at time
of entry by the Department worker. All items are to be picked up Monday after the Fair. Lego
entries will be disassembled if not picked up on that Monday. You must bring your Claim
Check(s) back with you to pick up your items on Monday after the Fair. Without the Claim
Check, the Fair Management reserves the right to hold any exhibit for proven ownership.
3. IF YOU HAVE ENTERED YOUR ITEM IN A PREVIOUS YEAR IT MAY NOT BE EN-
TERED AGAIN. Exhibitors may only enter one item per item number. Do not enter “Judge’s
Choice” Categories, all first place winners will be considered. All entries must be original and
must have been completed after previous year’s Fair. Any and all articles obnoxious or repulsive
in character (including nudity) will be forbidden entry, or if entered without being fully known,
shall be removed at once. Clothing entries will be disqualified if soiled. Signs or cards on any
exhibit designating that products are for sale will not be permitted. Superintendents reserve
the right of selection on questions of originality, categories and framing. Judges’ decision is
final.
4. Your exhibit must be within the Size Limits that are listed, excluding canes.
5. Entries not entered correctly will not be judged, only displayed. The right is reserved to
refuse entry of any exhibit that does not comply with the above rules.
6. The Fair Management, Employees, Department Workers and Volunteers will take
every precaution to protect exhibits but will not be held responsible for any loss, break-
age or damage to any article on exhibit.

RULES, REGULATIONS AND INFORMATION
1. Competition is open to any organization in North Carolina that provides an educational service to
benefit individuals, families and communities in addressing needs and concerns that will improve the quality
of life in the communities.
2. Entries close and forms must be postmarked by midnight September 1. The Educational Booths /
Decorated Christmas Trees Entry blanks are located in the back of Fair catalog and MUST INCLUDE
organization's federal tax ID number and (2) telephone contact numbers. Mail to Dixie Classic Fair,
PO Box 68, Winston-Salem, NC 27102 or bring to Fair Office, 421 W. 27th Street, Gate 9. Entries will
not be accepted over the phone or on-line.
3. The Fair reserves the right to refuse applications when all exhibit booths are filled even if received
before deadline. Booth location assignments will be made based on number of spaces available.
All entries will be placed in a drawing to determine placement. Once placement is made location
assignment will be mailed with Exhibitor's letter after September 1. Entry tag will be given out on
day of set-up. Please see the Superintendent or Assistant upon arrival.
4. Exhibit booths are 6' wide x 8' deep with 3' high drapery dividers. The back of booth is 8' high drapery
and may be decorated as desired. Booth items must not extend higher than the top of the back curtain or
block the view of the next exhibit booth. An 18" high platform will be placed in each booth. If platform is not
desired or electricity is needed, requests must be made on entry blank. No platforms will be removed
from booths after September 18. Items such as batteries or power cords must be supplied by exhibitor.
5. Booth decorations may not include any hazardous materials, i.e., broken glass, sharp objects. Su-
perintendent or assistant may use their discretion on whether an item needs to be removed.
6. DO NOT USE NAME OF GROUP, CLUB OR ORGANIZATION IN BOOTH. AN IDENTIFICATION
SIGN WILL BE PROVIDED BY THE FAIR AND PLACED IN THE EXHIBIT AFTER JUDGING.
7. Booths will remain on display during entire Fair. The Fair is not responsible for exhibit booths not
picked up on designated release day.

RULES, REGULATIONS AND INFORMATION
Read all Rules, Regulations and Information. Entries that do not comply with all Rules
and Regulations will be disqualified. All entries become property of the Fair and will remain
on display during the entire Fair.
1. No cakes made from cake mixes accepted (exception of O-51).
2. Breads,candies and cookies must be placed on a piece of heavy cardboard 6” x 10”,
which has been covered with foil. Cakes must be on cardboard which has been covered
with foil in the shape of a half circle(see example pg.141). The entry tag must be taped
to the bottom front right hand corner of cardboard. Place unwrapped entry in a large clear
plastic bag, with tag extending outside the bag. Plastic wrap is not acceptable.
3. For Cakes Only - 2" slice is required for judging. Must be individually placed on
a 6" round styrofoam plate and put in clear plastic quart size bag and labeled with the
exhibitors number. DO NOT CUT OFF Display half.
4. Entries from same family MUST be from different recipes.
5. Due to storage conditions, the Fair cannot accept cakes or icings that need to be refrig-
erated. DO NOT use pineapple, banana, or fresh coconut in icings (exception of O-58 and
O-59). No pies or cheesecake entries are accepted.
6. Icings using eggs must be cooked.
7. All products that have deteriorated will be discarded at our discretion during the fair.

quart, or 1/2 pint) with clean standard two-piece lid and ring.
2. All jars must be clear. No Colored glass jars.
3. Jars should be LABELED near the bottom of the front giving NAME OF PRODUCT,
METHOD AND TIME OF PROCESSING. DO NOT INCLUDE NAME OF EXHIBITOR.
4. All products must be processed according to recognized safe methods
found in the current edition of the USDA Complete Guide to Canning or the
Ball Blue Book.
5. REMOVE STRING FROM ENTRY TAG, REPLACE WITH A #16 RUBBER BAND AND

Appearance: Jams are made from crushed fruits, usually small ones, and cooked to a smooth,
jell-like consistency. Conserves are fruit mixtures of jam consistency often containing citrus.
A true conserve contains nuts and raisins. Butters are made from fruits which contain a large
portion of the fleshy material without seeds and skins. Marmalade contains small pieces of
fruit or citrus peel evenly suspended in a transparent soft jelly.
